THE ANNUAL PARISH MEETING OF THE CATHEDRAL OF ST. PHILIP IS THIS SUNDAY! 10 AM! Whatever service you usually attend, and whoever you are, please join us this Sunday, December 10, at 10 a.m., in Child Hall, for the annual Parish Meeting of the Cathedral of St. Philip! No adult classes will meet during this time. At this meeting, all members—and all associate members, friends, and visitors!—gather together for common celebration. Ours is a grand community, a “great community of communities,” and this parish meeting is our opportunity to gather in one place. Join us! As in recent years, we will meet during the regular education hour. We will hear reports from myself and from several parish leaders. The annual Parish Report, with its complete review of the 2017 year, will also be distributed. Please pray for the slate of Chapter nominees for the 2020 Chapter class. Our Nominating Committee has worked faithfully and efficiently to present a slate of six nominees—Bryant Bateman, Janice Cook, Dorsey DeLong, Alexis Guilbert, Helen McSwain, and Brent Rosengren. Please see page 4 for biographies of these nominees. And, we will honor the wonderful and irreplaceable Judy Johnson! Judy is retiring after having served as Executive Assistant to the Dean for fourteen years, and, before that, four years here in the areas of liturgy and membership. Also on this Parish Meeting Sunday, during our morning services, we will form an offertory Procession of Pledges! You should have received those 2018 pledge cards by mail in the last several weeks. Pray about your pledge this year, and pledge generously! Bring your cards to church, and then walk to the altar following the usual procession of bread, wine, and Sunday gifts. Others will join you. We need your commitment, no matter how small or large. Even if you do not have a pledge card that day, you may process simply with your commitment to give in 2018. I am so thankful for each of you this year! See you Sunday!

WORSHIP CHRISTMAS LESSONS AND CAROLS

BLUE CHRISTMAS For many of us, Christmas is a tough time, and can be the occasion for “feeling blue” in the midst of the culture focused on being happy and celebrating. At such times, we need to take time to acknowledge our sadness, loss, and grief. The anguish of broken relationships or unemployment, the weariness of ill health, the loss of a loved one, and even the loss of a dear family pet – all can contribute to a feeling of being alone, of “feeling blue,” in the midst of the season around us. The Cathedral invites you to join us in sharing a Blue Christmas service on Wednesday, December 20, at 6:30 p.m. in St. Mary’s Chapel. We invite you to move from “feeling blue” to experiencing the wonder and hope of Christmas. For questions contact the Rev. Dr. Bill Harkins, bharkins@stphilipscathedral.org, or Canon Wallace Marsh, wmarsh@stphilipscathedral.org.

The Cathedral Schola will lead our annual Festival of Nine Christmas Lessons and Carols by Candlelight on Sunday, December 17 at 4 p.m. Biblical readings narrating the prophecy and birth of Jesus are illuminated by congregational carols and choral music of the Christmas season. Our festival is modeled on the famous worship service at King’s College, Cambridge, which has become popular worldwide since World War II through annual radio broadcasts on Christmas Eve. Whether you best sense the Eternal through beautiful choral music or popular carols sung by all, this service holds something for everyone. Amid the frenetic pace of the Christmas season, this is a perfect opportunity to take a few moments to step back to contemplate and enjoy its real meaning.
