The CATHEDRAL TIMES The weekly newsletter of the Cathedral of St. Philip · Serving Atlanta and the World · November 12, 2017
BELLS AND THANKS DURING ALL SAINTS WEEK Thank you! Thank you, thank you, thank you, to so many people during this week of All Saints observances at the Cathedral of St. Philip! As you know, our observance of the Feast of All Saints is not a single event; sometimes, it takes almost a week. We start on All Saints Day itself, November 1, with a full day of preparing for, and welcoming, people in Atlanta who are homeless. Thank you to all who prepared food, organized busses, served tables, bussed tables, made desserts, and welcomed, welcomed, welcomed so many saints into this holy place. We modeled our Cathedral values: Grace, Excellence, and Hospitality! A few hours later, we celebrated a special Requiem Eucharist in the Cathedral itself, praying by name for those who died while homeless in Atlanta. During the blessing of bread and wine, we processed wooden crosses with the names of those had died. As we prayed each name, our Cathedral bells tolled. Thank you to each person who came to that service, who served at that service, and who prayed at that service. And thank you to so many service agencies who served and ministered throughout the day—washing feet, distributing clothes, making appointments. Wednesday, November 1, was a grand day of sainthood. To a lot of us, it looked like the kingdom of heaven. Prayer for the saints continued through the week. I was touched by people remembering loved ones who had died, and loved ones who are still alive! On the Sunday morning after All Saints Day, All Saints Sunday, we baptized new saints. How lively were the young children being baptized. And how excited was the adult our community baptized at the later service. Thank you for a glorious morning! The bells were happy! After church on Sunday, I was honored to officiate in the Memorial Garden for the interment of the ashes of a man who has died too young. He had moved away when he died unexpectedly, but I remember his meeting his wife at one of our early Young Adult groups here at the Cathedral, the 20s30s Group, back in the old days. He was—and is!—a saint, and I was so glad his wife wanted to be back in Atlanta for the interment of his ashes. Again, there were tears and bells. Finally, at 4:00 p.m. on All Saints Sunday, our splendid choir helped us sing a Choral Eucharist while we prayed, by name, for each of the 172 friends and family and members of our Cathedral community who died in the past year. Again, we rang a bell with each name. Like you, I knew many of those people personally, and the mere mention of their names brings back images of love and life. Even deceased, they remain holy members of our community. Our neighbors heard Cathedral bells all week! Our policy is to ring our Cathedral bells only on holy occasions—not simply on the hour or quarter hour—but only after Sunday services, after weddings, and at funerals, or specially acknowledged holy times. Those bells were incessant this past week. We rang the bells after the praying of each name who had died, on Wednesday and on Sunday. Thank you, saints! You are not just those who died in the past year. You are still here, present among us, serving and loving. I have “met you in school, or in lanes, or at sea – in church, or in trains, or in shops, or at tea.” I have met you in hallways and parking lots, in pews and in kitchens, in homeless shelters and in prisons, in memorial gardens and in parish halls. Our Cathedral bells are still ringing for you, whether you have died or whether you are alive. Indeed, in the Kingdom of God, in the Communion of Saints, we are all alive in Christ. Thank you.

LIVING FAITH
Child Hall Canon George Maxwell leads this series of discussions during the fall term about the Christian Vision of C. S. Lewis. As always, you will find those things that we think matter most: a light heart, a broad welcome, and good coffee. This week, Canon Maxwell will lead a discussion about discernment, and how the insight of C.S. Lewis in “The Screwtape Letters” and “The Letters to Malcolm” can help us determine what to do in given practical situations.
Room 120 Join Canon Wallace Marsh and Canon Cathy Zappa as we explore what it means to live out our faith through conversation with scripture and tradition, contemporary books, and, most important, one another. This week, Canon Zappa will lead our continuing discussion of Brené Brown’s Daring Greatly.
BIBLICAL GREEK Room 356 Beginning Biblical Greek is offered on a drop-in basis most Sunday mornings at 10:10 a.m. Continuing Biblical Greek classes are offered on Sundays from 1:15–2:45 p.m., including this Sunday, for anyone who wants to learn the basics of translation using grammar aids, lexicons, and commentaries. For more information, contact the Rev. Dr. Thee Smith at thee. smith@emory.edu.

United Thank OFFERING GIVE THANKS WITH UTO Every day we have so many blessings that come our way. Let us rejoice and give thanks this fall by participating in our Cathedral’s United Thank Offering (UTO). UTO has been a tradition since 1889 and supports the missions and ministries of the Episcopal Church. Every cent collected fulfills diocesan grant requests, and each year over $2.5 million is received through UTO offerings. Here are some ways you and your family can participate: • Pick up a Blue Box this Sunday in the Atrium and place it in a prominent place in your home, like the kitchen counter or wherever you keep your keys and wallet. • Every night during dinner, go around the table and share one thing for which you are truly grateful that day. Pass around the Blue Box and insert some coins or dollars to express your gratitude.
•
When saying prayers in the morning or at night, make a ritual offering to thank God for being there to hear your prayers. • Let the children put a coin in the box for every accomplishment they can share from their day at school. • Ask every family member to make a donation in thanks for a person they love who has brought joy into their lives. Ingathering is Sunday, November 19. Having spent several weeks adding daily offerings of thanks to your Blue Box, on Saturday, November 18, you can open it and count your offerings. Write a check for your total amount, payable to the Cathedral of St. Philip (with UTO in the memo line), or make a contribution at the Atrium kiosk or online at stphilipscathedral.org/contribution. Then, take your empty Blue Box and keep the tradition alive at home until the spring ingathering day!

PREPARING THE HEART IN ADVENT
Mark your calendars! St. Veronica’s Guild will hold another jewelry sale in September 2018 at the Cathedral. In preparation for the sale, please consider donating previously loved jewelry that you no longer wear. The guild is happy to have costume jewelry; inherited vintage pieces that languish in a box in the back of a closet; or 14K or 18K gold and sterling silver pieces, even if they are broken - including that one earring you’ve been saving hoping to find the mate. Bring your jewelry donations to the Information Desk in the Atrium. Contact St. Veronica’s jewelry sale co-chairs Barbara Frolik, barbarafrolik@gmail.com, or Patti Parker, patticparker@gmail.com, for more information.
Come spend time preparing your heart for the birth of Wisdom at an Advent Quiet Day, Saturday, December 9. The heart is a doorway that can be prepared to welcome the Christ, born in the poorest corner, in the most unlikely place. This day will include opportunities for wisdom practices that prepare and open the heart for transformation: chant, extended silence for individual reflection with readings, the labyrinth, creative expression, and body prayer. The Quiet Day will be led by Lisa Persons, M.Div., who is a spiritual director and coordinator at Amerson House Spirituality Center behind St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church. She studied intensively with the Rev. Cynthia Bourgeault for several years and has been an active associate of Green Bough House of Prayer since 1996. She has organized monthly Taizé prayers in the Atlanta area since 1992. The Quiet Day will take place in the Lanier House on the Cathedral campus, 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m., Saturday, December 9. The cost is $20 and includes lunch. Please register before December 4 online at stphilipscathedral. org/quietday or by contacting Jeannie Mahood, jmahood@stphilipscathedral.org or 404-365-1031.

The 2017 HOMELESS REQUIEM
Last Wednesday, November 1—All Saints Day—the Cathedral remembered 52 individuals who died while homeless in Atlanta in the past year at the annual Homeless Requiem. Before the service, hundreds of guests joined us for dinner, and the Voices of Hope choir from Arrendale State Prison offered a musical prelude. Dean Sam Candler officiated and the Rev. Tony Johns, executive director of Crossroads Community Ministries, preached. The Cathedral partnered with more than 20 service agencies to make the night a success.
