THE EPISCOPAL BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER – AND ITS REVISIONS! When I was younger, I remember someone writing that their father had been baptized and confirmed using the 1789 Book of Common Prayer, but that he (the writer) had been baptized and confirmed using the 1892 Prayer Book. He said his children had been baptized and confirmed using the 1928 Prayer Book – and that his granddaughter had been confirmed in London using the English Prayer Book of 1662. Which one, he asked, was the real Prayer Book? (See William Sydnor, The Real Prayer Book, 1978, p 1.) I have been asked, from time to time, to reflect upon whether it is time to revise our current Episcopal Book of Common Prayer. The topic may well be an issue at our next General Convention, in July of 2018. The authorized prayer books of The Episcopal Church include those of 1789, 1892, 1928, and 1979. But they also include the English books before that: 1549, 1552, 1559, 1604, and 1662. Most of those revisions occurred in times of notable cultural or political change. Are we in such a time now? So, this Sunday at the Dean’s Forum and Old Fashioned Sunday School class—meeting in the Parish Hall at 10:10 a.m.—I will present an overview of the history of Prayer Book revision in the Episcopal Church. Perhaps many of you have favorite prayers, but which are found in different prayer books. Perhaps many of you have experienced important spiritual events, but led by different prayer books. This fall, we are using three popular books as starting points for our conversations: Essentialism: The Art of Pursuing Less, by Greg McKeown; Daring Greatly, by Brené Brown; and The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business, by Charles Duhigg.
BIBLICAL GREEK Room 356 Beginning Biblical Greek is offered on a drop-in basis on Sunday mornings at 10:10 a.m. Continuing Biblical Greek classes are offered on Sundays from 1:15–2:45 p.m. for anyone who wants to learn the basics of translation using grammar aids, lexicons, and commentaries. CHILDREN’S BOOK DRIVE For the third year the Cathedral Book Store will be collecting new books for the children at the Homeless Requiem, the children at the Arrendale Prison Children’s Center, and the young people at Covenant House. With a goal of 250 books, donated books will be distributed to children attending the Homeless Requiem on November 1, and in December to the other groups. Books are available to purchase at the Cathedral Book Store during regular business hours or in the Atrium from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Sundays throughout October. Please help each of these beautiful children receive a wonderful new book this year!

Beginning Sunday, October 8, Children’s Ministries will collect new or gently used coats and shoes for children in assorted sizes. They will be used at a store during the Homeless Requiem. There will be no charge to the children of homeless parents, but they can experience the fun of selecting the coat and shoes they like best for the cooler season approaching. Dear Anna, My father loved to read. I remember him reading in his chair in our den when I would come down for breakfast in the morning. I remember him reading in his chair on the porch at the beach when we got up from our naps in the afternoon. And, I remember the shelves of books that lined the walls of his office at the church. At the end of his life, though, he had only a handful of books in his study. Gone were the books on ethics, philosophy, and systematic theology. Gone were the books on history, politics, and church doctrine. He kept only a couple of his Bible commentaries, his favorite spiritual writings, and a prayer book held together by rubber bands. Karl Rahner, the eminent twentieth century Jesuit theologian, famously said, “The Christian of the future will be a mystic or will not exist at all.” He meant that the future of Christianity depends on the followers of Christ having genuine experiences of God. Thomas Aquinas, the great thirteenth century Dominican scholar, said something similar at the end of his life. He unexpectedly stopped writing his masterpiece, the Summa Theologiae, because he had seen a vision that made his writings seem to him like so much straw.
MOTHERS MORNING OUT
I don’t think that my father or either of these two great theologians concluded that thinking about God was not important. We need reason to interpret our experiences just as we need our experiences to interpret reason. I think they were saying that the point of faith is not to know about God, but to be in relationship with God. I don’t think my father regretted reading any of the books that he read. But, reading was only part of his spiritual discipline. I also remember him praying, taking communion, making his confession and hearing the confessions of others, and serving those in need. The Christian of the future will undoubtedly be a mystic. But, she will also be able to make sense of her experiences, incorporate them into her life, and use them to serve others. Faith is not just about visions, voices, or other extraordinary experiences. It’s about being aware of the God that dwells within you and being totally available to the neighbor that stands in front of you. So, let the books on your bedside table pile up to embarrassing heights. But, make sure your prayer book is on top! Your affectionate uncle, Ames
