LIVING FAITH Room 120 Join Canon Wallace Marsh and Canon Cathy Zappa as we explore what it means to live out our faith through conversation with scripture and tradition, contemporary books, and, most important, one another. This fall, we are using three popular books as starting points for our conversations: Essentialism: The Art of Pursuing Less, by Greg McKeown; Daring Greatly, by Brené Brown; and The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business, by Charles Duhigg.
Walthour Library Change can be difficult and even frightening, but periods of transformation and transition in life also present opportunities for growth and reflection. Canon Carolynne Williams leads this six-week class geared toward anyone navigating life changes, regardless of age.

CHAPTER THE CHAPTER NEEDS YOUR HELP IN CHOOSING THE CATHEDRAL’S LEADERS The Chapter Nominating Committee has begun its work of assembling a slate of nominees for the 2018 Cathedral Chapter. The parish is invited to submit recommendations of qualified candidates. As the governing body of the Cathedral, the Chapter determines policy issues, sets goals, and provides stewardship of the Cathedral’s complex operations. The Chapter formally reviews the status of each of the Cathedral’s parochial entities and ministries, as well as parish financial statements. Unlike smaller parishes, the Chapter does not usually get involved in the day-to-day activities of the Cathedral. Instead, the Chapter
of the Cathedral operates as a board of trustees or board of stewards. Each Chapter member serves a three-year term. Bylaws allow for members to be: “Any communicant of the parish in good and regular standing, who is not less than eighteen years of age, a regular attendant in Cathedral worship in the year preceding election, and known by the treasurer to have made and maintained a stated financial commitment for church support in the year preceding election.” The most important quality of an effective Chapter member is an ability to see the larger picture. Most have held leadership positions in more than one of the church’s ministries or parochial entities. After recommendations are given to the Nominating Committee, eligibility is verified and nominees are polled to confirm their interest and availability. The committee then chooses six strong candidates to send to the Chapter for approval. Finally, these new Chapter members are formally elected by the parish at the annual meeting in December. The Nominating Committee looks at candidates who will round out the experience of the continuing Chapter members. An attempt is made to include representatives across all age and gender groups, while ensuring that a broad range of ministries and parochial entities of the Cathedral parish is also represented. Members of the committee include: Mary Bondurant, Matt Caine, Joan Gilbert, Lindsey Hardegree, Eric Mininberg, and Doug O’Bryan. Dean Sam Candler and Senior Warden Mary Caroline Cravens serve ex-officio. Recommendations should be submitted along with a brief supporting statement to any Nominating Committee member, or to the Office of the Dean, 404-365-1031, or jjohnson@ stphilipscathedral.org by Monday, October 2.
MUSIC OKLAHOMA ORGANIST TO PERFORM ON SUNDAY This Sunday, October 1 at 3:15 p.m., organist Damin Spritzer will perform on the Cathedral’s Sunday Afternoon Recital Series with a program featuring rarely heard works by Ernest MacMillan, Harold Darke, Léonce de SaintMartin, Larry King, and Henri Dallier. Dr. Spritzer is a graduate of Oberlin Conservatory, Eastman School of Music, and the University
of North Texas, and currently teaches at the University of Oklahoma. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear this marvelous musician and performer. HUMANE SOCIETY SEEKS DONATIONS The Feast of St. Francis is always a special day at the Cathedral. It is a day to celebrate the joy that our pets bring into our lives and our homes. This year in particular, we also need to remember those pets that have been displaced because of the recent hurricanes. The Atlanta Humane Society (AHS) has accepted animals from areas impacted by the storms. These animals are currently in the care, or will soon be in the care, of the AHS, which is in desperate need of donations. Your donation may be in goods or volunteering of your time, but at this particular time cash is especially appreciated! Stop by the Atlanta Humane Society table on St. Francis Day, Sunday, October 1, to make a donation. A member of the Humane Society and Cathedral member Karen Bunn will be at the table throughout the morning to receive your donations. Items that are needed include: Milkbone dog biscuits (medium, small, or mini size); newspapers; bleach; laundry detergent; poop bags; paper towels; old towels; stainless steel dog bowls (2-cup size); tennis balls; house training pads; ink pens; Sharpie markers; 45-gallon trash bags; gift cards from Amazon, Kroger, Home Depot, and Lowe’s; cash donations.
ST. ANNE’S GUILD THANKS YOU FOR SUCCESSFUL AUGUST BCM FOOD DRIVE St. Anne’s Guild extends a hearty “thank you” to all at the Cathedral who supported the August Buckhead Christian Ministry (BCM) Food Drive. We received a total of 106 bags of food and $5,804.26 in contributions that BCM will use to buy food. Your generosity helps BCM offset their monthly food costs, freeing their budget for other forms of aid to those in crisis in our community. Every Sunday in August and February you’ll find St. Anne’s volunteers eager and happy to greet you and talk about the great work of BCM. We love the organization and are honored to coordinate these semi-annual collections on behalf of the Cathedral. Our work is a joy because of the participation of so many individuals as well as Cathedral entities like the children’s and youth ministries, the Cathedral Preschool, the various Sunday School groups, Bible Study groups, the choir, and the Hispanic Ministry. If you love flowers and you love the Cathedral, you possess all the requirements to be a valued and successful member of the Flower Guild! We are seeking new members of all experience levels who are available to help prepare altar flowers every other month, and at Easter and Christmas. If you are new to the Cathedral, this is a perfect opportunity to meet other members. Opportunities for additional training are already planned. You’ll enjoy developing your expertise and making wonderful new friends. The Cathedral Flower Guild is responsible for providing flowers in all worship spaces at the Cathedral. We arrange flowers for 3 to 5 altar areas each week, along with weddings and funerals. The Flower Guild designs and arranges the flowers for festivals such as Christmas and Easter, and for Cathedral and diocesan special events and receptions. And the Flower Festival, produced as part of the Cathedral Antiques Show, is an annual highlight that brings the guild together for fellowship, creative work, and the chance to learn from outstanding designers from the U.S. and Europe. A TASTE OF LATIN AMERICA Every year the Diocesan Hispanic Ministry Commission sponsors a special dinner called A Taste of Latin America, and it is a real fiesta! Hispanic members from several parishes bring tasty Latin American food to share with guests at the special potluck meal. There is music and dancing, craft items for sale, a raffle, and a silent auction – plus a piñata for the children, of course! This year’s dinner is on Saturday, October 7, from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. in Child Hall. Reservations and tickets are not required; after dinner, sombreros will be passed for donations. The funds from this year’s event will be used to help hurricane and earthquake victims in Latin America and the Caribbean. Friends and family members of all ages are welcome. Mark your calendar and plan to come!
MEDICARE SEMINAR AT CATHEDRAL TOWERS Medicare’s annual election period is October 15–December 7, so it is time to review coverage options and change plans. Join Betsy Elliott at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, October 10 in the music room at Cathedral Towers for a presentation on Medicare Advantage. Cathedral Towers is the highrise located behind the lower parking lot. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan and and have questions about your coverage, this is an excellent way to make sure you are insured with a plan that meets all your needs.
