NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION! As you might expect, I have never been a huge fan of various New Year’s resolutions. First, most New Year’s resolutions seem like fads and short-lived attempts to lose weight or stop drinking. One should be doing those things all the time, not just in January! Secondly, I live according to a Christian calendar whose new year starts in Advent, and whose new life starts at Christmas (the Incarnation) and again at Easter (the Resurrection!). I love observing new life on those days. Okay, the third reason I am not a fan of New Year’s resolutions probably has to do with the reality that I am rarely able to keep them! However, I am a fan of “resolution,” and I do respect “resolve,” at whatever time they appear. This week, I want to salute not the particular resolutions that people may take on, but, rather, the act of resolve itself. It is good to meet this new year with a sense of resolve, with new year’s resolution. Here’s to meeting this new year with resolve! I noticed quite a few resolves in the past month. The blessed Saint Mary answered the angel’s visit with a clear sense of resolve. “Let it be to me according to your word,” Mary told the angel. She resolved to meet her situation with faith. I saw resolve this Christmas when I noticed, again and again, a young baby learning to pull himself up to a coffee table. Then he resolved to examine and to open each kitchen cabinet and shelf. He was determined! I saw resolve in a young mother intent on feeding her children at the appropriate hour, no matter what else was going on. Resolve was in a man determined to make his year-end quota. Resolve was in a set of grandparents deciding to make the journey, once again, to see children in another state. In a few days, we will hear about Jesus resolving to be baptized by John, “for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.” Jesus, and John, too, were determined. They were resolved. This year, I want to see, not necessarily various resolutions. Rather, I want to see resolve itself. Resolve is an intentional act of goodness and beauty. Resolve is not wishful thinking. It is not mere dreaming. It is not waiting for something good to happen. It is not winning the lottery.
And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.”
Resolve is putting your will into the situation. Being part of the solution. Being part of the action. Getting in the game. Engaging, not waiting. Our world needs people of resolve. Of course, that resolve should be directed in the proper way! Proper resolve is directed towards the common good, directed towards beauty and truth. Resolve is not obstinance in the face of error. And resolve is not the refusal to admit error. We all make mistakes. Resolve is the intent to do good, especially when that good must come out of something bad. Perhaps my New Year’s resolution, then, is simply to be resolved. To resolve myself towards the common good, to resolve myself in the direction of truth and beauty. Here’s to the New Year. And here’s to New Year’s Resolve!

CHILDR EN The Nurturing Center is open for children three and younger from 8:30 a.m. through the end of the 11:15 a.m. service each week. Children’s Chapel takes place during the 8:45 a.m. service as an option for parents and children who are not yet ready to experience the full liturgy together, though children are always welcome in “big” church. Children three years through third grade begin in church with their parents, follow the children’s acolytes and leaders out at the Sequence Hymn, then rejoin their parents at the Offertory. Two-year-olds attend their own chapel service, which begins at 8:45 a.m. Parents who would like their children two years old and younger to join them for communion may go pick them up from Room 227 at the Peace.
ADULT EDUCATION Unless otherwise noted, these adult education classes are held Sunday mornings from 10:10–11 a.m. OLD FASHIONED SUNDAY SCHOOL (ROOM 133) This year, we join Christians across time and around the world in exploring the question that Jesus posed to his disciples: “But who do you say that I am?” In particular, we are examining images of Jesus from various historical and social contexts, together with the implications of these images for faith, then and now. This will be both a historical survey and an invitation to reflect on our own theology of Christ (“Christology”). Jaroslav Pelikan’s book, Jesus Through the Centuries, will be our companion along the way. In the fall, we traced conceptualizations of Christ from the New Testament into the Middle Ages. This spring, after a special lecture by Jennifer Priestley on Thomas Merton on Sunday, January 8, we’ll resume with the Late Middle Ages and make our way into the 21st century. The class is organized by Mack Leath, and the discussions will be led by Canons Cathy Zappa and George Maxwell, with an occasional guest teacher. As always, you will find those things that we think matter most: a light heart, a broad welcome, and good coffee. We look forward to seeing you there.

THE DIVINE DANCE (ROOM 239) Drawing from scripture, theology, and the deepest insights of mystics, philosophers, and sages throughout history, Fr. Richard Rohr presents a compelling alternative to aloof and fairytale versions of God. The Divine Dance makes accessible and practicable the Christian tradition’s most surprising gift: God as community, God as friendship, God as dance. Canon Carolynne Williams leads this class. SMALL GROUP BIBLE STUDY (ROOM 122) Jim Bingham and Gordon Mathis lead an ongoing small group Bible Study focusing on a particular book of the Bible for several months at a time. BIBLICAL GREEK (ROOM 356) Beginning Biblical Greek is offered on a drop-in basis on Sunday mornings at 10:10 a.m. Continuing Biblical Greek classes are offered on Sundays from 1:15–2:45 p.m. for anyone who wants to learn the basics of translation using grammar aids, lexicons, and commentaries. SPIRITUALITY AND CREATIVITY BOOK GROUP STARTS IN JANUARY Is your creative side longing for expression? Are you wondering if you even still have a creative side?! Join us to explore our creativity using the book Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert (available in paperback at the Cathedral Book Store). We’ll meet on Wednesday evenings, January 11 through February 22, 6:30 – 8 p.m. in Room 120. In addition to exploring what the book illuminates, we’ll also engage in a variety of spiritual and creative practices. Participants should provide their own book, journal, and a $10 supply fee (if possible). Other art supplies will be furnished – artistic skill is not required! We’ll use art supplies for play!
HABITAT CHRISTMAS BASKETS Our Cathedral elves assembled and delivered 21 beautiful Habitat Christmas baskets this year to the original owners of homes we have helped build over the past two decades. The outpouring of generosity from so many parishioners and the help this year of the newly formed St. Ruth’s Guild made the scale of this effort possible! Of course, the gift baskets with their delicious contents brought smiles of appreciation and delight to children and adults. Our visits also help us realize the impact Habitat homes have, providing secure shelter for families, letting hard working families build wealth, and strengthening Atlanta neighborhoods. CENTERING PR AYER A new centering prayer group is beginning on Thursday, January 5. This group will meet on Thursdays, beginning at 9:15 a.m. If you have made a resolution to include mindfulness and prayer in your life for 2017, come and join us. This informal gathering will include two 20 minute sessions with a 5 minute walking meditation between them. Come and stay for one or all! QUIET MORNING GATHERING Saturday, January 21 9:30–11:30 a.m. In the Lanier House Whether you are a beginner or long-time practitioner, or simply curious about a new practice, we hope you will join us for a quiet morning of centering prayer. Centering prayer is a practice that helps us rest and be grounded in the presence of God. ALLEGRO: MUSIC FOR YOUNG CHILDREN Using play, movement, singing, and instruments, Allegro and Musikgarten classes help younger children through age 5 develop musical skills and knowledge as well as an appreciation for music, using the Musikgarten curriculum. Classes start again in early January and are grouped by age, featuring varied times and age-appropriate curricula. ANTIQUES SHOW IS ONLY A MONTH AWAY! The 2017 Cathedral Antiques Show will kick off with a festive patron preview party on Wednesday, February 8. The 2017 show is full of new features and new faces. Seven speakers will be making their first appearances at the show, and we have partnered with the Antiques Council, an international organization of antiques dealers that manages the Nantucket, Winnetka, and Charleston shows, to welcome eleven fabulous new dealers. The show will also have a new look and feel this year: the layout has been reconfigured to enhance the guest experience, and the antiques will be complemented by the addition of contemporary art, a pop-up garden shop, and the return of lunch in the Gould Room. Combined with the artistry of the Flower Festival against the backdrop of the Cathedral’s Gothic architecture, the 2017 Show promises to be a feast of beauty and inspiration. A high school age organist with an already promising career, Oak serves as organ scholar at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Atlanta, and has already participated as organ scholar in several national-level Royal School of Church Music courses and other national-level events. He has studied with Scott Atchison at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church, Shannon Gallier at St. Bartholomew’s, and Jack Mitchener at Mercer University. Women’s Lenten Retreat March 31-April 2, 2017 Mikell Camp and Conference Center Toccoa, Georgia Join women of the Cathedral for a weekend of fellowship, prayer, creativity, and renewal in the North Georgia mountains. The retreat will be led by the Rev. Cathy Zappa, canon for prayer and mission, and Jeannie Mahood, our program coordinator for spirituality and pastoral care. We will be gathering at Mikell Camp and Conference Center (our diocesan camp) in Toccoa, which offers a sanctuary of natural beauty and quiet for rest and reconnection. Costs for the weekend are $235 (private room) and $185 (shared room) and include lodging Friday and Saturday and meals Friday dinner through breakfast on Sunday.
