CONGRATULATIONS AND THANKS TO MARY HUNTER ROUSE!

Congratulations to Mary Hunter Rouse!
We welcomed Mary Hunter to the Cathedral almost ten years ago. She has done many things since then, and is now our Canon for Education. The time has come, though, for Mary Hunter to answer a different call. She has accepted a position teaching religion at St. Martin’s Episcopal School here in Atlanta.
Although we will miss Mary Hunter’s creative energy and generous spirit, we will continue to enjoy the many gifts that she has given to us. It is not too much to say that Mary Hunter has changed the way we think about spiritual formation.
Some of what she has done can be seen in the practices and programs that she put in place. She built a Godly Play program; recruited and managed paid and volunteer staff; organized community building events and systems; reorganized our youth and young adult ministries; helped to establish a “mothers’ morning out” program; and directed our participation in the LaAmistad afternoon tutoring and mentoring program.
Some of what she has done can be seen in the other leadership positions that she held. Mary Hunter served on the Board of Directors of the Cathedral Preschool, and on the Board of Directors of the Godly Play Foundation (a position she will continue to hold). Some of what she has done can be seen in her determination that we have the benefit of the latest developments in education and formation. While she was with us, Mary Hunter earned a Masters in Christian Formation from the Virginia Theological Seminary, and studied the spiritual guidance of children at General Theological Seminary. For the last several years, she has taught a course in Christian Education at The School of Theology of Sewanee, The University of the South.

The image that sticks in our minds, though, is the delight on Mary Hunter’s face when she’s teaching. Whether she is telling a Godly Play story, blessing backpacks and costumes, leading the youth in Compline on the bus as they return home from their latest adventure, or dancing her way through vacation Bible school, Mary Hunter has a way of making faith fun! Mary Hunter will be with us until the end of June.
We will be announcing soon how we will continue our thriving children and youth ministries. Some of what Mary Hunter was doing will be reassigned among existing staff members, and some of it will be given to given to new staff members that we will be looking to hire.
For now, though, we thank you, Mary Hunter. Thank you for the love and commitment that you have given to this community, and especially our children and youth! Thank you for you for the joy and wonder that you have shown in all that you have done! And, thank you for the inquiring and discerning heart that you have brought to our common life – even if it now calls you away to another place! We will miss you, and we will look forward to seeing what you will do next for the Kingdom of God. Grace and peace to you,

The Nurturing Center is open for children three and younger from 8:30 a.m. through the end of the 11:15 a.m. service each week. Children’s Chapel takes place during the 8:45 a.m. service as an option for parents and children who are not yet ready to experience the full liturgy together, though children are always welcome in “big” church. Children three years through third grade begin in church with their parents, follow the children’s acolytes and leaders out at the Sequence Hymn, then rejoin their parents at the Offertory. Two-year-olds attend their own chapel service, which begins at 8:45 a.m. Parents who would like their children two years old and younger to join them for communion may go pick them up from Room 227 at the Peace.

CHRISTIAN PRINCIPLES THAT MAKE RELATIONSHIPS WORK – Room 120 Led by Canon Wallace Marsh — Concludes Sunday, May 22 This series looks at how to bring some of the most important Christian principles into our personal relationships. We draw upon scripture and the Book of Common Prayer as we examine the concepts of growth, reconciliation, and incarnation. This course is based upon John Gottman’s Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work. All are welcome.

SMALL GROUP BIBLE STUDY – Room 122 Led by Jim Bingham and Gordon Mathis This ongoing small group Bible Study focuses on a particular book of the Bible for several months at a time. We read one chapter each week. Bring your study Bible or favorite translation. BEGINNING BIBLICAL GREEK – Room 356 Led by the Rev. Dr. Thee Smith We offer Beginning Biblical Greek on a drop-in basis and require no previous knowledge of Greek. This year we use the proven successful, Basic Greek in 30 Minutes a Day: A Self Study Introduction to New Testament Greek by James Found. Also open to beginners, Continuing Biblical Greek (Sundays at 1:15 p.m.) includes long-term members who translate using grammar aids, lexicons and commentaries. texts adds nuance and depth to reading scripture.
ELDER MINISTRY A ARP SAFE DRIVER CLASS The Cathedral is offering the AARP Smart Driver safety class on Thursday, May 26, from 9 a.m.–4 p.m. The class will include the effects of aging on driving, changes that we encounter as older drivers, and a number of other topics that will help us become safer drivers. At the completion of the class you may be eligible for a discount on your automobile liability policy. Lunch is not provided, so feel free to bring a bag lunch. The cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members. You may pay at the door by cash or check. Please bring your AARP card if you are a member. SOUTH CAROLINA ORGANIST TO PERFORM This Sunday, May 22, we welcome organist James Mellichamp as our final Sunday afternoon recitalist for the season. A graduate of Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama; Indiana University; and the Hochschule für Kirchenmusik in Herford, Germany, Mellichamp currently serves as president of Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia. He is also professor of music at Piedmont, with an active studio of young organists. His recital will include works by Tomlinson, Phillip James, and Vierne. Come and hear our final Sunday recital of the season, played by one of Georgia’s most talented performers.
UTO SUNDAY IS JUNE 5 Every day we have so many blessings that come our way. Let us rejoice and give thanks this spring by participating in our Cathedral’s United Thank Offering (UTO). UTO has been a tradition since 1889 and supports the missions and ministries of the Episcopal Church. Every cent collected fulfills diocesan grant requests, and each year over $2.5 million dollars is received through UTO offerings. Here are some ways you and your family can participate: • Pick up a Blue Box this Sunday and place it in a prominent place in your home like the kitchen counter or wherever you keep your keys and wallet. • Every night during dinner, go around the table and share one thing for which you are truly grateful that day. Pass around the Blue Box and insert some coins or dollars to express your gratitude.

CHOIR PRESENTS CHOR AL EUCHARIST FOR SEASON FINALE The Cathedral Choir's final 4 p.m. service of the season will be a choral Eucharist, featuring Louis Vierne’s marvelous Messe Solennelle. Experience worship in our sacred space through some of the greatest choral music of the twentieth century. This will be the last afternoon service until September.

When saying prayers in the morning or at night, make a ritual offering to thank God for being there to hear your prayers. • Let the children put a coin in the box for every accomplishment they can share from their day at school. • Ask every family member to make a donation in thanks for a person they love who has brought joy into their lives. Ingathering day is Sunday, June 5. Having spent several weeks adding daily offerings of thanks to your Blue Box, on June 4, you can open it and count your offerings. Write a check for your total amount, payable to the Cathedral of St. Philip (with UTO in the memo line), and bring it to church where you will receive a UTO envelope for the offering plate. Then, take your empty Blue Box and keep the tradition alive at home until the fall ingathering day! ST. VERONICA'S SEEKS TOILETRY DONATIONS St. Veronica’s Guild would like to thank all those who have participated in this year's toiletry drive for four Episcopal ministries in the Atlanta area, which serve homeless and near homeless persons. Each ministry has expressed profound appreciation for our donations. Now that the weather is warmer and more people are traveling, the guild would like to remind everyone that we still need new, unopened, travel-sized or regular-sized, personal care items. Having recently visited most of these ministries, guild members report that the most requested items are bar soap, washcloths, shampoo, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors, and feminine hygiene products. Dean Sam Candler and others were on hand for the ribbon-cutting and blessing of the new Covenant House community center, which was funded by proceeds of the 2015 Cathedral Antiques Show. On May 8, the 2016 Cathedral Antiques Show co-chairs and ECW presidents presented Literacy Action Executive Director Austin Dickson with a check for 100% of the net proceeds of the show: $223,400!
The ECW gathered for their spring luncheon to discuss friendship and enjoy fellowship.
Canon Wallace Marsh teed one up at the Cathedral Golf Tournament, which benefited our outreach projects in Haiti.

Centering Prayer Morning Retreat Saturday, June 11 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at the Lanier House
Centering prayer is spiritual practice that stills the body, opens the heart, and helps center us in a heightened sense of God’s presence. Whether you are a beginner or long-time practitioner, or simply curious about it, we hope you will join us for this morning of prayer and rest. Led by Cathedral member Will Traynor, the retreat will include an introduction to centering prayer, along with sessions of sitting and walking prayer.
