The Nurturing Center is open for children three and younger from 8:30 a.m. through the end of the 11:15 a.m. service each week. Children’s Chapel takes place during the 8:45 a.m. service as an option for parents and children who are not yet ready to experience the full liturgy together, though children are always welcome in “big” church. Children three years through third grade begin in church with their parents, follow the children’s acolytes and leaders out at the Sequence Hymn, then rejoin their parents at the Offertory. Two-year-olds attend their own chapel service, which begins at 8:45 a.m. Parents who would like their children two years old and younger to join them for communion may go pick them up from Room 227 at the Peace.

We'll play and learn, dance and sing throughout the week, all while “catching the wave of God’s amazing love” at Surf Shack! Week of Wonder is a volunteer driven Christian formation experience. We rely on parent, youth, and community volunteers to keep WOW running, safe, and fun. Presented by the British Consulate-General Atlanta and Friends of Cathedral Music This rare Atlanta appearance of one of the most celebrated choirs of men and boys in the world will delight and move listeners. At home in the University of Cambridge, the choir sings six Evensongs and a full Choral Eucharist each week during university term, giving them a facility of musicianship and breadth of repertoire that is truly astounding. Over the past half century, the choir has represented the British government in concerts throughout the world and has consistently released critically acclaimed recordings on international labels including EMI, Decca, Chandos, Hyperion, and Naxos. CO-LISTENING “CO-LISTENING” AT THE CATHEDR AL AND BEYOND By the Rev. Dr. Thee Smith “Co-listening” is a simple but potentially powerful practice where two people take turns listening to each other. Its simplicity tempts us to minimize the benefits, however. So this spring, I’m resuming co-listening classes at the Cathedral. All interested persons are invited to attend one or more of the sample introductory classes offered from March 30 through April 20 and instructed by yours truly. These “Introduction to Co-Listening” classes will teach and enhance peer coaching skills that make it possible to maximize one’s personal growth and interpersonal goals as fully as one chooses. Remarkable results can be achieved by people across all age groups and multiple backgrounds who learn to listen

effectively. I’m likely more familiar to you as a priest associate here at the Cathedral. And if you’ve heard me preach you also recall references to my vocation as a religion professor at Emory University. However, my offering these classes proceeds from my many years of teaching peer leadership in the international organization described at www.rc.org. In that regard other experienced leaders in our community will join me in teaching this 16-week course. But apart from the full multi-week series, your attending one of the introductory evenings offers you an opportunity to

explore a practice that can be life-defining and personally transforming into your foreseeable future. Introductory classes for Wednesday evenings, March 30–April 20 from 6–8 p.m. are offered free of cost. Then will follow a final opportunity on Wednesday, April 27, from 6-8:30 p.m., to consider and possibly be invited to join the series that runs through July 27. LETTER S TO A YOUNG EPISCOPALI A N Dear Anna, It dawns on me that you might not know about Mister Rogers. Fred Rogers was a Presbyterian minister, who created a television show for children called Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Your mother would have watched it. In an early episode, Mister Rogers is resting his feet in a plastic pool. It was a hot day and Mister Rogers invited the neighborhood police officer to put his feet in the cool water too. They sat next to each other in two metal folding chairs. The police officer is in his uniform. Mister Rogers is in one of his familiar cardigan sweaters. They are both wearing big grins on their faces. Their pants legs are rolled up. And, their bare feet are visible in the water. I recently listened to an interview of Francois Clemmons, who played the police officer. “The icon Fred Rogers,” he said, “not only was showing my brown skin in the tub with his white skin as two friends,

but as I was getting out of that tub, he was helping me dry my feet.” Clemmons had joined the cast of the show the year before, becoming the first African-American to have a recurring role on a children’s television show. Mister Rogers offers the best commentary I can imagine on why we wash feet on Maundy Thursday. The Gospel of John describes Jesus as washing the feet of his disciples at the last meal they have together. It’s an example, he says, of how to love others as he has loved them. Public foot washing isn’t part of our lives any more, though. When Jesus arrived at someone’s house after a long journey, he would have expected to have his feet washed by a servant or one of his disciples. It was the hospitable thing to do. Now, when we try to understand foot washing in the context of ordinary experience, we focus on what Jesus did and then talk about service, or we focus on

what the disciples might have felt and then talk about vulnerability. Mister Rogers focuses us instead on how we see each other and talks about friendship. By washing his feet, Mister Rogers claims Clemmons as a friend. Foot washing is about service, and it is about vulnerability, but it’s really about how those things can build friendships that we couldn’t have imagined before. It also helps, I think, to laugh while you’re doing it! Now in its tenth year, the Cathedral Farmers Market is the largest producer-only farmers market in the state. Producer-only means that everything at the market has been grown, raised, or made by the seller, ensuring fair prices for both the vendors and the consumers. The market takes place on Saturday mornings beginning April 2, 8:30 a.m.–noon.
