THE DEAN'S FORUM HOSTS ADULT CONFIRMATION CLASS Beginning Sunday, February 14, the Dean's Forum will host an adult confirmation class, 10:10 a.m. in Child Hall, in preparation for the confirmation service on Sunday, April 24. Confirmation in the Episcopal Church is a “mature public affirmation of faith and commitment to the responsibilities of Baptism.” This series is designed for anyone who wishes to learn more about the Christian faith, the Episcopal Church, and the Cathedral of St. Philip. Classes will be taught by Dean Sam Candler; Canons Wallace Marsh, George Maxwell, and Cathy Zappa; and the Rev. Dr. Bill Harkins; with a special guest speaker on February 21, Sheffield Hale, executive director of the Atlanta History Center.

Anyone who wishes to learn more about the church (or just wants a refresher) is encouraged to participate in this series. If you are interested in confirmation class or have any questions, contact Canon Wallace Marsh, wmarsh@ stphilipscathedral.org.

CHILDREN

The Nurturing Center is open for children three and younger from 8:30 a.m. through the end of the 11:15 a.m. service each week.

Children’s Chapel takes place during the 8:45 a.m. service as an option for parents and children who are not yet ready to experience the full liturgy together, though children are always welcome in “big” church.

Children three years through third grade begin in church with their parents, follow the children’s acolytes and leaders out at the Sequence Hymn, then rejoin their parents at the Offertory. Two-year-olds attend their own chapel service, which begins at 8:45 a.m.

Parents who would like their children two years old and younger to join them for communion may go pick them up from Room 227 at the Peace.

February is food drive month at the Cathedral as St. Anne’s Guild reaches out to you for donations of food and/or checks of $20 or more in support of Buckhead Christian Ministry (BCM). Make checks payable to Cathedral of St. Philip with “BCM Food Drive” on the memo line. The BCM food pantry provides 2000 bags of groceries to more than 1600 people each

month, and is stocked entirely with donations from the community. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, one out of five children live in households without access to adequate food. To help, please stop by our table in the Atrium Sundays in February between 9:45 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.

A NOTE OF THANKS Dozens of Cathedral parishioners, including members of St. Clare’s Guild and their children, created koinonia at Christmas with 19 families for whom we built Habitat for Humanity homes over the past two decades. On Saturday, December 19, teams of Cathedral parishioners delivered Christmas gift baskets filled to overflowing with cookies, breads, fruit, and much more, donated by generous parishioners, to “our” families.

Family members warmly greeted and thanked the delivery teams, and then shared their events of the year. These families are doing very well and some have made improvements to their homes. We can feel and see that our work in building these homes has had a direct and positive impact on improving the lives of families and the communities in which the homes were built. Each of them expressed their great appreciation for the hard work of the Cathedral community.

ERD SERVES WITH YOUR SUPPORT For over 75 years, Episcopal Relief & Development (ERD) has served as a compassionate response to world-wide human suffering. In particular, the agency collaborates with local church and ecumenical partners in nearly 40 countries, to help communities create long-term development strategies and to rebuild after disasters.

In 2009, the General Convention of The Episcopal Church designated Lent as a time to support, remember, and pray for ERD’s work and witness in this hurting world.

You also can connect more deeply with their ministry by using ERD’s Lenten Meditations, which will be distributed by the 20s/30s before and after services this Sunday, February 14.

Available in English and Spanish, this year's devotional focuses on creating economic opportunities and strengthening communities, with a particular focus on empowering women. The daily readings are co-authored by a group of leaders from across the Anglican Communion who bring a range of perspectives as they reflect on Scripture and other sources of spiritual wisdom.

As we support ERD, let us pray for all those who are fighting poverty, disaster, and disease in their communities and for those who working on their behalf, and discern how we, too, can be agents of God’s healing love and justice in the world.

For a week each year, there is no greater example of transformation than the Cathedral of St. Philip becoming the Antiques Show and Flower Festival. We hope you had the chance to see the physical changes inside the building and be a part of the holy community of the event.

The transformation doesn’t end at the physical spaces. In the process of all the planning, lives are transformed through fellowship and friendship. We are very thankful for those newfound relationships and friendships.

L ABYR INTH A ND TAIZÉ A facilitated labyrinth walk will be held in Child Hall, Monday, February 15 at 7 p.m. The Lenten theme is “ Walking through Darkness into Light.” Sara Robinson Chambless will offer a short introduction and orientation to the labyrinth at 6:30 p.m. for anyone interested in learning more about this ancient contemplative practice. All are welcome.

Taizé prayer starts at 8 p.m. in Mikell Chapel. Originating in Taizé, France, this simple service of scripture, music, and candlelight will bring a beautiful and prayerful close to your Monday.

The Labyrinth and Taizé take place every 3rd Monday at the Cathedral. Come to one, or both – and bring a friend!

LETTER S TO A YOUNG EPISCOPALI A N Dear Anna, I found an old Valentine from you yesterday.

I think the first letter I ever wrote you was in response to that card. You were too young to sign it, but I knew it was from you. It has your tiny handprints arranged to make the shape of a heart.

Do you remember it?

Finding that card made me think about St. Valentine. I wonder if you know his story?

Valentine was a doctor in ancient Rome.

He often bartered for his services since there were many people who needed his help but could not pay him.

One day, an old man came in with his daughter hoping that Valentine could restore her sight. Valentine used a cold compress to make her eyes feel better, and began to teach her about the things that she couldn’t see.

He often took her with him to gather the herbs that he used in his practice, and they became good friends. She loved to pick the

first blooms of spring and take them home to her father.

Valentine was also a priest, but Christianity was still illegal in Rome then.

He prayed for his patients every night, always behind closed doors.

Somehow, he was discovered and arrested. The little girl’s father was in charge of the jail, and as the soldiers were taking Valentine out to be executed, Valentine gave the jailer a rolled up piece of paper with instructions to give it to his daughter.

When they unrolled the note, a crocus fell out onto the floor. The note said, “From your Valentine.”

We often associate Valentine’s Day cards with romantic feelings, probably because the day we remember Valentine’s death coincided with the ancient Roman feast of Lupercalia, a time when young women wrote love notes to their suitors.

Valentine himself, though, calls us to a courageousness in love that transcends greeting card sentiments. Of course,

Valentine risked his life for his faith.

But he also showed courage in his commitment, even to his last act, to doing the little things that let people know they were loved.

As the poet David Whyte says, “On the inside we come to know who and what and how we love and what we can do to deepen that love; only from the outside and only by looking back, does it look like courage.”

FARMERS MARKET TO LAUNCH WEDNESDAYS In addition to the regular Saturday market, there will be an additional day each week to enjoy the Cathedral Farmers Market, the largest producer-only market in metro Atlanta.

Every Wednesday beginning April 13, 4:30–8 p.m., take a break from cooking with food and drink from familiar Saturday market vendors, new vendors, and a rotating schedule of Atlanta’s favorite chefs. Food will be available to go or for dining at outdoor picnic tables on-site.

Each week, the Wednesday market will also feature tastings from a local craft brewery, plus fresh produce, eggs, dairy, and meat from local farmers and bread, pasta, jam, and more from local food producers.

LE N T E N QU I E T DAY February 27, 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m., in the Gould Room “God is my light and my salvation; whom then shall I fear?” (Psalm 27) What can we learn from our fear, and how can we respond to it as people of faith? This Lenten Quiet Day, we will be praying with stories, scriptures, and spiritual practices, including Welcoming Prayer, that can help us explore and befriend fear in scary times. The retreat will be facilitated by the Rev. Lynnsay Buehler, director of The Julian of Norwich Center. Cost is $20, which includes lunch.

CENTERING PRAYER MINI-RETREAT February 13, 9:30–11:30 a.m., at the L anier House Centering prayer is spiritual practice that stills the body, opens the heart, and helps center our lives in a heightened sense of God’s presence. Whether you are a beginner or long-time practitioner of centering prayer, or are simply curious about it, join us for a mini-retreat, led by Cathedral parishioner Will Traynor, on February 13, at the Lanier House. The morning retreat will include an introduction to centering prayer, along with sessions of sitting and walking prayer.
