PARISH REPORT

FROM THE DEAN CATHEDRAL ALTARS OF THANKSGIVING I give thanks for Cathedral altars.

The altar, of course, is the principal table, the holy place, around which we gather in Christian community. The altar is a sacred symbol of our unity and of our community.

So, this year, I organize my review of the past year around the various altars where I have experienced the beautiful community and service of this parish.

You are a beautiful parish. You have witnessed to faith, hope, and love. You have witnessed to grace, excellence, and hospitality. I give thanks for each of you here at the Cathedral Parish of St. Philip.

Each week, we gather around an altar.

On Sundays, that altar is usually the grand high altar in the Cathedral itself. Those beautiful liturgies offer us a vision of the transcendant, but they also gather us in intimacy and immanence. We experience the incarnation of love in that place.

However, the Cathedral of St. Philip gathers around other altars, too. We celebrate the Eucharist daily at the altar of our more contemporary St. Mary’s Chapel.

Our Children’s Chapel altar is used on Sundays and throughout the week in our Cathedral Preschool. The tables on which we prepare communion in hospitals and in bedrooms across Atlanta are altars. We

have even set the Lord’s altar in prisons this year. We have celebrated and offered thanks on altars in the streets and parks of Atlanta. We gather at the Cathedral Towers. In fact, our Cathedral Farmers Market offers a kind of altar to the community, a grand table (and tables!) of fellowship and love and service.

The Cathedral of St. Philip, grand and diverse as it is, is a community. We are a community of thanksgiving who gathers around altars throughout Atlanta and the world. Those altars have comforted us, to be sure, during times of sadness and loss—at funerals, for instance. And those altars have also challenged us, perhaps when God spoke to us in new ways. During comfort or challenge, however, I give thanks for God’s holiness around those altars in this past year.

In my own ministry this past year, I have been blessed to preside and preach among you, to teach and to comfort. Our Christmas Eve services, televised again

by Canon Wallace Marsh and by our excellent audio-visual engineer, Brant McCaskill. In fact, we have made great strides this year in live-streaming (on the internet) many of our services and

occasional other Cathedral events. Thank you! Moreoever—I am thrilled to say!— our sound system in the Cathedral is in the midst of still another refinement. We are determined to make it easier and easier to hear the spoken word in the Cathedral.

I like to bless people. I was honored to deliver the opening invocation again at the Peachtree Road Race on the Fourth of July, on the condition, of course, that the race officials could get me to the Cathedral in time to bless the actual beginning runners—and all the runners/walkers—of the grand community occasion. Blessings to you! Barukh atah Adonai, Eloheinu!

I delivered prayers and invocations for: The Cathedral Preschool (and narrated the annual Christmas Pageant again!—the true beginning of the Christmas season!), for civic groups such as the Atlanta Rotary Club, at the opening of the Farmers Market, celebrating Epiphany at the Chapmans’ home, opening the Cathedral Antiques Show—and also blessing the new Community Center at Covenant House (which was the Antiques Show beneficiary two years ago). When I bless such places, I take with me the energy and faith of the entire Cathedral community.

Of course, I also thrive on preaching and teaching. Here at the Cathedral, I continued various Sunday classes on

prayer, liturgy, history, theology, and pilgrimage. But I am also glad to be sustained by the Dean’s Men’s, and Dean’s Women’s, Bible Studies. They meet every Tuesday and Wednesday morning, throughout the year. I climbed the Cathedral bell tower with some usual groups, including St. Monica’s Guild, and the aptly named Tower Climbers; we set up a table, an altar of thanksgiving, even up there on top of the tower!

I was also Adjunct Professor at Emory University this past Spring, in the Candler School of Theology Anglican Studies program. I taught “Anglican Theology and Theologians” with another excellent class of students. In addition, I was honored to be invited to speak and preach in other places around the country this past year. I led the vestry retreat for Christ Church Cathedral, Houston, Texas. I led the men’s group retreat for St. David’s Church, Roswell, Georgia. I led our own parish retreat at Kanuga this past year, focusing on “Fables and Faith.”

In March, I led an energetic group of fifteen Cathedral pilgrims to Israel/ Palestine and to the Holy Land! I think our ages spanned from 4 years old to… at least over 60… and I loved it.

Even there, across the world, we shared community and Holy Communion together at the altars of God. Once again, I was a featured preacher on Day 1, the national radio program presenting Christian preachers from across the world. (This coming year, 2017, I am scheduled to preach on Day 1 for their Easter morning broadcast.) I also preached at St. George’s Anglican Church, in Magnetawan, Ontario; and I was again the guest preacher at All Saints Chapel, Linville, North Carolina.

This past fall, I preached at the newly designated Grace Church Cathedral, in Charleston, South Carolina; it was good to be back in the holy city.

I must not forget how my trusty piano also serves as a kind of altar in my ministry! I enjoy playing piano and

serving as the opening act for our “Chill on the Hill” Memorial Day celebration.

I also play at Shrove Tuesday and at the All Saints’ Homeless Dinner.

Special guest teachers and presenters at the Cathedral, including at the Dean’s Forum, included Sheffield Hale, of the Atlanta History Center, Professor Barzegar on Islamic Studies, and the inspiring John Philip Newell during the Spirituality Conference. I was honored to have John Philip Newell as our Sunday preacher following the conference, too.

Our Lenten series featured new and fresh voices in the Episcopal Church, among them Zach Thompson and Kim Jackson.

Bishop Keith Whitmore confirmed and preached here in the spring.

Shrove Tuesday is its own high-spirited altar! So is the annual All Saints’ Day Homeless Dinner. Thank you to all who volunteer and serve at that event!

Speaking of eating, there are some new people around our tables! Our kitchen, a holy table itself, is another altar around which we are sustained and inspired.

So, we were glad to welcome Lauren Raymond into our kitchen this year.

Her baking and catering service is called Flora & Flour, and we have been richly blessed by her talent and hospitality!

Other new and beautiful faces whom we welcomed to our altars and to our staff included Lisa McNamara, Meg Jones, Janie Harris, Jacob Nastruz, Queendora Lastrapes, and Chapman Walsh.

We said goodbye to some dear and faithful members of our thanksgiving community. I sure miss Canon Mary Hunter Rouse around our altar, but I salute her call to St. Martin’s Episcopal School in broadening her career. We also said goodbye to Christie Jennison, Casey Jones, and Sandra Turner.

We said goodbye to some dear and faithful parishioners, including Barrett Howell and Frances Sanders (wife of former dean John Sanders). Around the Cathedral altar, we celebrated the

life of Kathleen Cowart, bookstore buyer extraordinaire, a true New Orleans saint, a character, and who never failed to excite us with her wit.

And the dear saint, Ruth Vaught, also died this past year; she left us a holy example of single-minded servanthood.

Ruth, too, was an indefatigable character, a true lover of people, who gave herself deeply for this parish.

It is an honor for me to serve at the wonderful and various altars of the Cathedral Parish of St. Philip. Our community is everywhere. Our altars are everywhere. Thank you so much for allowing me to serve and to preside, and thank you so much for joining me! I must thank the entire staff of the Cathedral for their support, but especially the canon and associate staff, who also preside and preach and teach with passion and intellect. Thank you, George Maxwell!

And I thank the amazing saint, Judy Johnson, who keeps not only my life in order, but sometimes the entire life of the Cathedral. Thank you, Judy!

Finally, I salute and thank my dear wife, Boog. She has her own life, of course, teaching in the Cathedral Preschool and serving various community projects around Atlanta and Georgia. But I am glad she assists in my life, too! It is an honor and blessing to have her beside me at the outstanding altars of Cathedral life.

Our Cathedral altars of thanksgiving are everywhere. Around them we gather in thanksgiving, in good times and in bad, in celebration and in sadness. Those are the times in which God creates community in us. God creates holy community, which we call koinonia. I look forward to more time around those holy places, and I look forward to singing “Holy, Holy, Holy,” over and over again with you.

FROM THE WARDENS For us, the Cathedral Parish of St. Philip is church. But, what is Church?

As we have heard in more than one recent sermon, to be Church is to be a house of prayer for all people!

PEOPLE Worship at the Cathedral relies on legions of lay ministers: ushers, lectors, flower and altar guild members, vergers, acolytes, Eucharistic ministers and visitors, choir members and musicians, brass polishers, sound and lighting masters, and sextons. It is orchestrated and led by clergy and staff who write liturgies, organize people, print programs, celebrate, assist, and preach.

Also vital to worship is the presence of a faithful congregation—both in the building and beyond its walls. You are these people and you are doing this well!

Community at the Cathedral comprises everyone who walks onto the campus: people who worship, people who teach and learn, people who work, people who play, preschool families, counseling center clients, farmers market and bookstore patrons, homeless neighbors, yoga class participants, and people who come because they have nowhere else to go. This is not an exhaustive list, and many people fall into more than one category. We love that! If you are reading

this report, you are our people! All are welcome at our table and in our house!

We give thanks for growth in Cathedral membership over the past year, and for faithful pledging. We give thanks for every parishioner, every program, and every parochial entity that contributes to the vitality of our community.

PRAYER Ours is a house of prayer and spiritual formation. But, we are spiritually formed in many ways—as we follow the pattern of life that Christ laid down—through work, fellowship, worship, study, and quiet reflection.

Common prayer is at the core of who we are. So, we offer six services every Sunday during the program year, as well as daily morning prayer and 12:15 p.m.

Eucharist, weekly evening and centering prayer, and a monthly Taizé service.

Through these liturgies we baptize new Christians, bless pets and runners, and celebrate presentations, confirmations, quinceñeras, weddings, and funerals.

Work is part and parcel of the life of faith; we pray through our works.

Our works include: Habitat Houses (#28 this year!), drives for toys, food, clothing, school supplies, and toiletries, and preparation and delivery of meals.

Canon Cathy Zappa is guiding us in developing new prison ministries, and investigating mission opportunities in Haiti. We offered more support services at our annual Homeless Requiem this year. We work with Emmaus House, Church of the Common Ground, and Buckhead Christian Ministry in various ways. There is more. Plus, our parishioners, nourished by our community, also go out and serve individually. Some of their efforts we will never know of—but that comes from this house of prayer too!

Highlights of our parochial entities’ important work: The Cathedral Thrift House recently partnered with the Farmers Market in a culinary yard sale benefitting both entities. Our Cathedral Book Store book club, the Hart Readers, continues strong. The Cathedral Preschool welcomed an extra-large class of two-year-olds.

Friends of Cathedral Music has instituted a new artist-in-residence relationship with the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra.

Their collaboration with the Cathedral Choir in singing Duruflé’s Requiem on All Saint’s Sunday was exquisite. The Cathedral Farmers Market launched a Wednesday Night Market (with many familiar Saturday faces offering prepared food, live music, and local brews) which became a “Wednesday night supper”

for the parish and our neighbors. Our remarkable ECW and its guilds launched some new projects this year benefitting Camp Mikell and inmates at Arrendale Prison. The Cathedral Antiques Show had another great year benefitting Literacy Action in 2016—and is preparing, with some exciting changes to structure and format, for its 2017 show in just a few months, set to honor Kathleen Cowart and to benefit First-Step Staffing. The Cathedral Towers, Mother’s Morning Out, and the Cathedral Counseling Center all continue to provide steady support to our community. These efforts form us!

We are also formed by Sunday School, pilgrimages, retreats, quiet days, centering prayer, lecture series, book clubs, bible studies, and our annual Spirituality Conference—provided by a wide variety of clergy, parishioners, and guest presenters. These programs attract not only our own parishioners but people throughout the diocese and the city.

For children and youth, we were very sad to see Mary Hunter Rouse go, but warmly welcomed several bright new leaders. Lisa McNamara (Director of Children’s Ministries) has boosted fellowship opportunities for children and families, many aimed at strengthening our interaction with parochial entities such as the Farmers Market and the Preschool.

Under the graceful direction of Maggie Paul, Meg Jones and Jacob Nastruz (our new youth interns) are offering innovative Sunday school classes and also recently represented the Cathedral well as they helped lead diocesan youth at Annual Council this year.

New for the music program: our excellent Cathedral Choir has just released another CD—American Canticle­—on Gothic Records. The choristers program, under the direction of Patrick Scott, is so strong now that we see a surge in church attendance on the Sundays they sing.

We are excited about the continuing development of our Hispanic ministries and their integration into the broader parish under the guidance of Deacon

Juan Sandoval (whom we are lucky to have been able to lure into an expanded role as pastoral care associate as well!

Juan is wonderful!). Our Spanishlanguage worship and LaAmistad tutoring program have both grown, and we continue to add fellowship events such as a Halloween costume blessing.

In April, Bishop Whitmore confirmed a class of 60 Cathedral youth and adults, including many from our Spanishspeaking congregation, at a single service in the Nave with bilingual leaflets.

We are formed by fellowship—in our work, in our study, and also in our play. The parish retreat to Kanuga this year was overbooked and fun-filled. As were the two parish Epiphany parties and the third Chill on the Hill benefit concert. Under the brilliant hand of Dan Murphy, the Cathedral continues to use its website, podcasts, blogs, and the latest social media platforms to take our Cathedral conversation (sermons, classes, essays, photos, videos and calendar) far beyond our walls.

Our household could not be what we are without the preaching, celebrating, teaching, and pastoral care provided by all our full- and part-time clergy.

Some notable changes this year: Canon Carolynne Williams transitioned from full- to part-time. We are grateful still to benefit from her attentive pastoral care and graceful spirit. Wallace Marsh has increased his responsibilities to include both pastoral care and worship and he now has the excellent help of Jeannie Mahood and Ciara Rowley—otherwise, there is no way he could do it so well as he does.

The Dean and the Vicar continue to inspire and shepherd our vast and various house of prayer. In addition to celebrating, preaching, running bible studies, teaching Sunday school and weekday classes here at the Cathedral, and attending to the less visible but voluminous administrative duties attendant to such a large parish, we note the extensive gifts they also give within the city, the Diocese of Atlanta, and the world. This year, both have been called

as guest preachers and speakers at parishes all over the continent. Both are leaders in clergy support programs, diocesan projects, and Episcopal Church governance.

They each teach classes at Emory (and the Dean also sits on the Episcopal Studies Advisory Board), maintaining important ties with the school. They mentor, teach, and lead outside our house as well as within it. All of this fundamentally supports our mission.

THE HOUSE The Cathedral campus is our house, a home base for mission, a staging area for outreach, and importantly a place to recharge our energy. We continue to maintain and improve the beauty and efficiency of our house, with new better lighting in Child Hall, and renovated landscaping around the point­—new walkways, new plantings, and even a well—and we are improving the sound system in the Nave, so that everyone, no matter where they are sitting, will be able to hear every word and every note. We are taking care of our organ, and will soon see the installation of a pipe organ in Mikell Chapel. Thank you, David Rocchio!

Finally, our kitchen is up and running through a contract with Lauren Raymond of Flora & Flour (familiar to many from the Farmers Market), serving Wednesday lunches and catering some of our parish suppers (her spaghetti supper to go with our Advent Wreath Making event was so good!).

This house is glorious! You—our fellow faithful parishioners, our excellent staff, our inspiring clergy—are glorious!

This goes as much for the many not mentioned here by name. As your wardens, we are privileged to be able to see what happens in this house, and what people from this house carry out to give the world. We are humbled and honored to live in this house with you!

WORSHIP Worship is at the center of our religious life and sustains the work that we do in the world.

The word liturgy means “work of the people.” That is definitely the case here at the Cathedral as more than 700 members are involved in orchestrating the worship life of this community.

Every Sunday the Cathedral offers six services of worship, including a Holy Eucharist in Spanish. We also have special children’s worship during the program year.

The Eucharist is celebrated daily at 12:15 p.m. in St. Mary’s Chapel. The Friday 12:15 p.m. Eucharist includes prayers for healing. Morning and Evening Prayer are offered in Mikell Chapel periodically through the week.

A monthly Taizé service is held on the third Monday at 8 p.m. in Mikell Chapel, celebrating the saints of the Church.

Holy Baptism is celebrated seven times a year on major feast days, and special services are offered during Advent,

Lent, Holy Week, and Easter. On St. Francis’ Day we blessed all of our pets who joined us in church. On All Saints’ Sunday, we remembered those who have died this past year by offering a beautiful Choral Eucharist. On November 1, we hosted more than 400 guests for the 28th Annual Homeless Requiem, commemorating those who died on the streets of Atlanta during the past year.

Finally, as the Cathedral church for the Diocese of Atlanta, we also hosted two confirmation services, ordinations to the diaconate and priesthood, and other special diocesan services.

PASTORAL CARE The Cathedral offers the values of Philip the Deacon—grace, excellence, and hospitality—in the midst of difficulty and transition. Philip had the grace to baptize the eunuch. He had the excellence to explain the gospel.

Philip had the hospitality to join the Ethiopian eunuch; he got up into the chariot with him (Acts 8:26–40).

After Philip baptizes the Ethiopian eunuch, scripture says he is “snatched up” and disappears. This serves as a reminder that our mission is to offer pastoral care during transitions. The pastoral care department does not have the experience, personnel, or resources to provide longterm care, case management, or financial assistance. However, we do have the ability to connect you with agencies whose mission is to provide such care.

GRACE We believe that pastoral care is rooted in the grace of Christ, so we draw upon the sacraments and sacramental rites in the Book of Common Prayer.

EXCELLENCE

ELDER MINISTRY

We will offer excellent care and guidance through counseling sessions, classes, programs, pastoral visits, workshops, and worship.

HOSPITALITY Clergy, counselors, staff, and volunteers will be present with you during life’s difficulties and transitions.

We are blessed with a great pastoral care department. Jeannie Mahood has taken on more responsibility in this area.

Canons Carolynne Williams and Todd Smelser continue their ministry by making pastoral visits during the week. We have also added Deacon Juan Sandoval to this department. Juan is making pastoral visits, but is also helping train our volunteers who are on the front lines of pastoral care.

This programmatic year we are working closely with the Cathedral Counseling Center by offering a variety of classes and workshops.

I hope that you will participate in our pastoral offerings and experience the grace, excellence, and hospitality of the Cathedral.

There are hundreds of parishioners and associates who are seasoned in living. Over 700 parishioners are 72 years of age and older. More than 100 are couples where both partners are age 72 or older. Almost 70 members will reach or have reached age 72 by the calendar end of this year.

The eighth annual picnic celebrating St. Anthony of Padua as the patron saint of the elders was held earlier this year.

PrimeTimers continues to offer an appealing lunch and program each month. The program offerings span the interests of music, historical figures, and history, especially pertaining to the state of Georgia.

decline, the Cathedral membership continued to grow in the past year with an average of 22 new members joining the parish each month. The chart below reflects changes in the number of members and associates of the Cathedral during the twelve months ended on October 31, 2016. A member is someone who is baptized and has formalized membership at the Cathedral. An associate is someone who has not formalized their membership but is involved in the life of the Cathedral parish.

DECREASES

The Cathedral of St. Philip is among the largest parishes in the Episcopal Church.

It is a dynamic parish because of the many different parish life groups. These small groups are too many to name in this report, but each plays an important role in the life of the parish. I want to thank all those who serve as leaders in one of these groups. Your leadership is one of the reasons this is such an amazing parish.

I also want to thank Janie Harris for accepting the job as program coordinator for membership. Janie joined the staff in June 2016, and has already implemented some new ideas when it comes to welcoming our new members. We are offering periodic newcomers’ brunches following the 11:15 a.m. service. These have been very successful. I am excited about Janie’s enthusiasm and presence.

HISPANIC MINISTRIES The Hispanic Ministry has been consistent over the past year. The Sunday services are held at 11:15 a.m. with Deacon Juan Sandoval and one of three presbyters: the Rev. Dr. Bill Harkins, Canon Wallace Marsh, and Canon Cathy Zappa.

During the past year we have had 12 baptisms, nine confirmations, three presentations of a 40-day-old, 14 informed communions and two quinciñeras.

We will celebrate the Feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe on December 11 during the usual Sunday Eucharist. Last December, we were joined by the hispanic ministry from St. Benedict’s in Smyrna. We had over 200 people attend a festive celebration with food, music, and Holy Eucharist.

Many of the members of our Hispanic Ministry also participated with the annual Taste of Latin America. This is a festive occasion in which members from the 10 hispanic churches bring typical food from their country and share with the community. It is held in Child Hall and this past year had standing room only.

We hope more of all the churches will come and join us in 2017 for this event.

We will continue to serve the community with baptisms, quinciñeras, weddings, presentations, confirmation classes, and adult education. All are welcome to attend these Spanish-language services.

MUSIC One of the ways we sense the effectiveness of our music ministry is when people tell us how unexpectedly moved and inspired they have been by some musical aspect of a recent worship service or sacred concert.

Such comments confirm, at some level, the unquantifiable truth that music is among the most mysterious and profound means through which humans may encounter the Divine. When planning music for worship, I always hope that there will be something musical, somewhere in every service, which has the potential to inspire each person present. We also hope that people will listen and participate with open hearts and minds, because the ways in which the Holy Spirit can speak to us through music are limitless if we approach worship expecting to hear God speak.

Considered both from the benchmarks of inspiration and participation, the music ministry of the Cathedral continues to flourish. This would not be possible without the service-playing genius of Associate Organist-Choirmaster David Fishburn, the talents of Assistant Organist-Choirmaster Patrick Scott, or the organizational abilities of Coordinator for Music Tim Gunter. A flourishing music ministry here would also not be possible without the hard work and

dedication of the singers in our Cathedral Choir, Schola, and Chorister programs.

The adult choirs now exceed the typical size of each group, which means we must now order extra copies of nearly all the music we sing. The Cathedral Chorister program has also grown under Dr. Scott’s leadership, and the remarkable efforts of our Friends of Cathedral Music and its wonderful, active board enrich the spiritual/musical landscape of the entire region. All in all, more than a 120 singers and volunteers are actively involved in making our music ministry happen.

The Cathedral Choirs’ offerings in worship continually strive to meet a high caliber of excellence. They sing nearly 170 worship services and concerts annually.

As I write, the Cathedral Choir’s singing of one of the most beautiful Advent processions with lessons and carols ever still rings in our memories. Our four o’clock Sunday afternoon choral services with Eucharist have continued to grow; more people are making this their Sunday service for the day.

In February we recorded our second compact disc for Gothic Records, which was released locally in November, and will be released internationally early in 2017.

favorites, plus the premiére recordings of eight new canticle settings by American composers, among them Craig Phillips’ Te Deum & Jubilate (Cathedral of St. Philip, Atlanta), which were commissioned to be premièred by the Cathedral Choir. Friends of Cathedral Music generously underwrote the cost of bringing in members of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s brass and percussion sections to record these two canticles and one other, and the disc is a beautiful, and important, addition to the body of recorded sacred choral repertoire.

The Allegro program merits continued mention for its exciting transformation under the leadership of Brenda Pruitt since 2010. Adapting the Musikgarten curriculum for faith-based use, she offers multiple classes for young children, from babes in arms through second grade.

More than 100 children participated over the course of 2016. This fall the Allegro program fed eleven boys and girls into the Cathedral Chorister program, which itself welcomed 28 participants for the fall season, both of which are new records in recent years.

MUSIC continues to breathe exciting life into the musical outreach of the Cathedral.

Now under the caring leadership of Susan Carlisle, 2016 has been filled with remarkable events. In April we welcomed The Choir of Men & Boys from St. John’s College, Cambridge, England, which treated us to the finest boy treble singing I have ever heard. The Emile T. Fisher Concert in April provided a wonderful opportunity for the Cathedral Choir and a large chamber orchestra to present gems of the English choral tradition that are rarely heard in North America. Bruce Neswick was our recitalist for the Atlanta Summer Organ Festival, who played brilliantly to a record audience on one of the worst weather nights in recent memory. In the fall, Friends of Cathedral Music began a new relationship with the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra, welcoming them as artists-in-residence. The ABO treated

concertgoers to music from 18th century Leipzig in September, and collaborated with the Cathedral Schola and a worldclass cast of soloists in November to perform odes to St. Cecilia by Handel and Purcell. The Cathedral Choir offered the Duruflé Requiem on All Saints’ Sunday afternoon, the chamber orchestra underwritten as gift to the community by Friends of Cathedral Music. The fact that the Cathedral’s Aeolian-Skinner organ and the gracious acoustic of our Nave are considered national treasures is given ample evidence in the fact that 20 of the 28 artists on our 3:15 p.m. Sunday recitals for the 2016-2017 season are traveling here from out-of-state to perform.

Exciting benefactions in 2016 enabled us to sign contracts for the delivery of two new pipe organs during 2017. Our deep gratitude is due Lowell Jacks for the gift of what will be the first pipe

organ in Mikell Chapel’s history, given in memory of T. Ruben Jones. A beautiful instrument by Schoenstein designed specifically for Mikell Chapel will enrich the worship experience of parishioners there for generations to come. The MooreWilkerson Endowment will grace the Cathedral Nave with a six-stop baroque portative organ—specially designed for us by the Dutch builders, Klop—which will enhance all of our accompanied offerings of early music in concert and in worship.

The task of offering our best to God is a constantly moving target, and I look forward to continuing to partner with the staff, our wonderful volunteers, and the many singers whose devotion to music ministry here is so evident. Soli Deo Gloria!

The Cathedral of St. Philip strives to be “a house of prayer for all people.” We pray through worship, Bible studies, educational series, and our life and ministry together. With the support of our Spiritual Nurture and Formation Committee, we are able to offer many other opportunities to enrich your spiritual journey and prayer practice. Some highlights from this past year include:

SPIRITUALITY CONFERENCE In October, we hosted around 210 people for our eighth annual Spirituality Conference. Our speaker this year was John Philip Newell, poet, peacemaker, minister, scholar, and author of more than 15 books. In his talk, titled “Listening for the Heartbeat of God: The Vision and Practice of Celtic Christianity,” he explored some of the themes in his book of that title, as well as other ideas he has been developing. After spending the entire day leading the conference, Newell joined us on the Sunday after, to preach in both the 8:45 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. services and to lead the Dean’s Forum.

John Philip Newell was so well received that plans are underway for a 2018 Cathedral pilgrimage with him in Iona!

We look forward to hosting writer, preacher, and Episcopal priest Barbara Brown Taylor for our next Spirituality Conference, on October 28, 2017.

CENTERING PRAYER We have two groups that gather faithfully to practice and support each other in centering prayer. One group meets Wednesday evenings, from 6:30–7:30 p.m., and the other meets Thursday afternoons from 4–4:30 p.m., in the Lanier House.

Both veterans and newcomers are welcome to join these groups. In 2016, parishioner Will Traynor also offered five morning centering prayer retreats, all of which included orientation to the practice.

QUIET DAYS AND RETREATS During the seasons of Advent and Lent, the Cathedral offers quiet days, intended to provide people with space for prayer, reflection, and quiet. At our 2016 Lenten Quiet Day, the Rev. Lynnsay Buehler invited us to explore and befriend fear in scary times, by reflecting on psalms and by practicing welcoming prayer.

This Advent, parishioner, chaplain, and spiritual director Barbara Pendergrast led a restorative quiet day centered in the theme of “Preparing a Space.”

In Lent 2016, women of the parish gathered again at St. Mary’s Conference Center in Sewanee, Tennessee, for a weekend of fellowship and renewal.

With Jeannie Mahood as retreat leader, we reflected with Eve on what our longings might have to teach us about ourselves and God—and tried our hand at an art project and yoga, too.

Our 2017 retreat will be at Camp Mikell from March 31 – April 2.

TAIZÉ Taizé is a contemplative form of prayer and worship, introduced from a monastic community in France, that combines light, simple chants, and silence. Prayers for reconciliation are an important part of the service. Our monthly Taizé service takes place every third Monday at 8 p.m. in Mikell Chapel. All are welcome!

LABYRINTH Our beautiful outdoor labyrinth is open at all times for people to walk, pray, or even play. The indoor labyrinth is available for prayer and meditation on Mondays and Fridays from 3–8 p.m; and we have facilitated walks every third Monday, before Taizé. This year, our labyrinth coordinators added an orientation before each of these monthly facilitated walks, as a way to welcome those who are new to the labyrinth. In addition, we offer special labyrinth walks during Advent,

Lent, and Holy Week, as well as on other occasions. In 2016, we had special facilitated walks for the summer solstice and Father’s Day, for those who have died from AIDS on World AIDS Day, and for the victims and all affected by the mass shooting in Orlando. The labyrinth, along with Taizé, seems ideally suited to provide places to gather and pray in response to difficult current events.

We also have a high quality, portable labyrinth, which we loan out to other organizations, like schools and churches.

PRAYER CORNER This summer, you may have noticed something new in the Cathedral Times: the “Prayer Corner,” a weekly column written by various Cathedral members and clergy about ways they pray. The column was intended to keep us connected over the summer and help us remember the many different ways that we can pray. It was a great success!

SPIRITUAL FORMATION AND NURTURE COMMITTEE The Spiritual Formation and Nurture Committee meets regularly and provides important direction and support around our spirituality offerings. The committee works closely with Jeannie Mahood, Program Coordinator for Spirituality and Pastoral Care, and Cathy Zappa, Canon for Spirituality and Mission.

EDUCATION Christianity is more a way of life than it is a set of rules. Therefore, education in a Christian community is the practice of teaching and learning how to be Christian rather than what Christians believe. There are, of course, certain things that we need to know in order to fully live out our calling as followers of Christ. Our Christian education classes address these “need to know” items, but always in the context of who we are.

Narrative is essential to the formation of children and youth. Our youngest children focus much of their time on hearing and responding to the stories of God’s people. As children grow and mature, the emphasis shifts from internalization of the Christian narrative to more explicitly placing ourselves within that narrative. The story of God’s work in the world continues into our community today, so we spend time not only listening and responding to the ancient stories but working together in the world to live out our call as Christians.

Furthermore, we seek to teach the language of the Christian people. As our children grow and gain some fluency with the stories, practices, and rituals of our faith, we create space for them to use that language to make meaning in their own lives. Our adult classes are designed

to continue the practice of thinking theologically in a variety of contexts, to provide an interpretative framework for people who want to live faithful lives.

Children, teenagers, and adults have the opportunity to grapple with the narrative of the Christian people and to find their own place in that narrative.

We invite people of all ages into the practice of learning through creative, developmentally appropriate methods of teaching and community building.

ADULT EDUCATION Clergy and parishioners work together to create a variety of excellent, engaging educational offerings for adults, which allow us to grow in community; engage theologically the questions of our time; and reflect together on our faith, Scripture, and tradition. On Sunday mornings, we have both ongoing classes (like the Dean’s Forum, Old Fashioned Sunday School, Greek classes, and small-group Bible and book studies) and special series that meet for just a few weeks. Sunday morning highlights from this past year include a new set of classes offered by pastoral care and our summer class on Heroes in the Practice of Faith, which allowed us to learn from some outstanding

lay teachers about their passions.

Outside of Sunday morning, parishioners gather to learn and grow through regular Bible studies and book groups, an Education for Ministry seminar, confirmation classes, and special lectures and seasonal offerings. During Lent, we heard from dynamic new clergy around the Diocese, in our Wednesday evening class, “Fresh Voices for the Future.” Our relatively new monthly book groups, BBC (“Bill’s Book Group”) and Hart Readers, offered in partnership with the Cathedral Bookstore, are in their second year and going strong.

This June, our seminarian, Clayton Harrington, carried our commitment to education beyond the Cathedral walls, by starting a weekly Bible study at the Cathedral Towers.

EDUCATION YOUTH Our youth program has continued to flourish this year. A youth cabin at the parish retreat at Kanuga provided a fun atmosphere for rising sixth grade students to get to know current middle school students, me, and one of our youth ministry interns. Plans are underway for a mission trip to Haiti next summer.

The Cathedral youth leadership team has come together again with 17 high school students to continue to grow our high school programming and serve the community around us. Participation among diocesan youth events continues to rise, particularly in Happening, a retreat on finding your own spirituality for high school students. Sunday School classes for youth of all ages range in topics from baking communion bread to C. S. Lewis and continue to bring a balance

of faith, fun, and fellowship that is at the core of our program. Weekly EYC and Tuesday Fellini’s Bible study continue to thrive. Our youth ministry interns and I continue to support students throughout the week with breakfast and lunch meetings, sporting events attendance, and simply being available as a relatable adult when life’s challenges arise.

CHILDREN Godly Play continues to inform all that we do with children. We joined the National Godly Play Foundation. We will be hosting a core training in March of 2017 and attending the National Conference in Denver in June, 2017. Our seven mixedaged classrooms were home to spiritual formation for children ages two and a half through fifth grade on Sunday mornings, and twice weekly meetings after school with the participants in LaAmistad.

We also welcomed children and their families to special liturgies and events outside of the regular Sunday morning routine. The Shrove Tuesday pancake supper, Ash Wednesday and Maundy Thursday family services, book bag blessing, Halloween costume blessing, LaAmistad costume blessing and Halloween party, It’s Fall Y’all party for parents, Advent wreath making, holiday cookie baking, Christmas Party and St. Nicholas visit for LaAmistad, and of course Week of Wonder were highlights of the year. Baptism workshops and adult Godly Play circles gave parents the opportunity to explore the stories that their children are learning to love.

OUTREACH The mission of the Church, according to the Book of Common Prayer, is to “restore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ.” We live this mission out in an especially visible way when we reach out to, serve among, and build relationships with those who are most vulnerable in our society today, which Cathedral members do in many ways.

As a centrally located cathedral, we minister through reaching out and through welcoming people here. For example, this year, we provided sacred space through our labyrinth for people to grieve the shooting in Orlando this summer and, later, to remember those who are suffering or have died from AIDS; we offered hospitality to hundreds of thousands of runners in the Peachtree Road Race; and we welcomed over 600 guests to our annual Homeless Dinner and Requiem.

Our outreach and mission ministries are supported, first and foremost, by generous and faithful pledges. Other significant sources of support include loose offerings, special donations, and funds raised by parochial entities. One of the most festive sources of support was “Chill on the Hill,” a Chastain-style concert and picnic, whose proceeds go to our outreach programs.

is evident in the $890,000 that we distributed in 2015 in support of outreach activities “off the hill.” However, while financial expenditures are an important component of our ministry, they do not begin to capture the many hours of volunteer time and in-kind contributions received throughout the year.

OUTREACH GRANTS Every year, we make special grants to organizations that are serving our most vulnerable citizens, including those coping with poverty, substance abuse, mental illness, dislocation, and lack of housing. Most of the grants are directed to agencies with whom we have a long-standing relationship or who are in some way Episcopalian, such as Buckhead Christian Ministries, Emmaus House, Habitat for Humanity, Holy Comforter Church, LaAmistad, and The Road (Episcopal Service Corp).

NEW MINISTRIES PRISON MINISTRIES This past year, we have been developing a relationship with Arrendale State Prison through its chaplaincy department and

have supported the following programs: 1. Arrendale Children’s Center: Under the leadership of the Cathedral ECW, we have provided volunteers and community meals for two family visitation days; invited the prison chaplain to speak at our annual ECW meeting (open to others); and collected clothes for families in need.

2. Since September 2016, a steering committee has been at work developing a small-group reentry ministry for women being released from prison.

We hope to be launching this new initiative in the spring of 2017.

3. Since December 2015, the Cathedral has sponsored a weekly service of the Holy Eucharist at the prison, with an average of 24 participants per week.

We also sponsored a Christmas Eve service for 250 people, with Bishop Wright as celebrant and preacher.

GLOBAL MINISTRY We are excited to be developing a new Cathedral ministry in Haiti, in partnership with Eternal Hope in Haiti. Eternal Hope is a Georgia-based non-profit agency, with deep roots in the CapHaitien area and years of experience

OUTREACH providing health care and nutritional services to those in need. They also operate an orphanage for medically fragile and/or critically ill children.

Our first Cathedral trip with Eternal Hope will take place June 10 – June 16, 2017. It will an intergenerational trip with a strong youth component.

ONGOING ACTIVITIES We value the mutually-enriching partnerships we have with other ministries, many of whom have become an integral part of Cathedral life. Below are some of our many ongoing ministries, which provide opportunities for parishioners to get involved in serving others—and to make new friends in the process.

BUCKHEAD CHRISTIAN MINISTRIES (BCM) Under the leadership of the St. Anne’s Guild, we collect food twice a year to fill the BCM pantry. The Episcopal Church Women have generously supported the Christmas toy drive every year since its inception.

EMMAUS HOUSE The Cathedral continues to support

Emmaus House in many ways, including an annual grant, parishioners serving on the board, and community suppers for their new Homework Boot Camp (offered in partnership with the 2016 Antiques Show beneficiary, Literacy Action).

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY In April 2016, we finished our twenty-eighth Habitat house, with 46 volunteers and five other Atlanta-area churches. Under the leadership of John Champion and Judy Bodner, Cathedral volunteers not only work together to build homes, but also to provide hearty meals for all the hard workers and to distribute gift baskets for Christmas.

HOLY COMFORTER A group of parishioners brings dinner to Holy Comforter, a unique church and fellowship center reaching out to the intellectually impaired. Thank you to Zack and Carrie Sexton for coordinating.

INFORMATION DESK GUILD Faithful, friendly volunteers staff the Information Desk during the week, in order to offer assistance and hospitality to all those who come to our church.

LAAMISTAD LaAmistad is an after-school program that supports Latino students and their families by providing tutoring, mentoring, community, and other resources that promote academic, physical, and personal growth. Our program currently meets Monday and Wednesday afternoons. We recently added a weekly chapel service to this already outstanding program.

In November 2016, we held our twentyeighth annual Homeless Requiem, with dinner catered by City of Refuge’s 180° Kitchen and music provided by the Cathedral Choir and the Voices of Hope choir from Arrendale Prison.

OUTREACH In addition to an evening of true hospitality and worship, our guests had access to other services in the Atrium, including a foot clinic run by Church of the Common Ground and a health clinic offered by Mercy Care.

Representatives from BCM, Crossroads, Georgia Justice Project, and City of Refuge were also there. New this year was an art exhibit by residents and staff of the Peachtree-Pine Homeless Shelter.

As part of her Girl Scout project, Cathedral youth Emma Ellis provided a boutique experience for children to pick out new shoes and a winter coat; and the Cathedral Bookstore held a book drive for children who are homeless and for children involved in Arrendale Prison’s Children’s Center.

CHURCH OF THE COMMON GROUND This year, we joined Common Ground in Woodruff Park for Holy Eucharist three times, including our annual Christmas Eve visit. In addition, a small group of us brought a Thanksgiving breakfast to Common Ground’s Morning Prayer service; and St. Veronica’s Guild hosted Common Ground leaders for a beautiful Christmas luncheon.

PEACHTREE-PINE MEALS Volunteers meet on the first Sunday of every month to prepare, deliver, and serve a hearty meal for residents at the Peachtree-Pine Shelter.

HIV/AIDS MINISTRY The Ricks-Wheeler Fund, which is chaired by Dr. Amy Mininberg, provides grants to assist those affected by HIV/ AIDS. Most notably, the Cathedral Antiques Show engages over 300 volunteers a year and raised over $233,000 for its 2016 beneficiary, Literacy Action. Work is well underway for the 2016 show, benefitting

First Step Staffing. In November 2016, the Show held a breakfast for around 300 business leaders, to introduce First Step to the business community.

The Cathedral Thrift House is another important supporter of mission: not only does it help clothe people in need, but it also committed, in 2015, to direct its proceeds to our outreach ministries. A wholesome gathering place with wholesome food, the Cathedral Farmers Market provided $21,513 for food stamp benefits in 2015 and partnered with Meals on Wheels for the delivery of thousands of pounds of fresh produce for seniors in need .

DIOCESAN SUPPORT Recognizing that we are part of a larger communion, we support mission work at the diocesan level, as well. In 2015, we tithed $392,508 to the Diocese of Atlanta and continue to support several specific diocesan mission programs.

“Koinonia—Stewardship in Community” was the theme for the 2016 stewardship campaign. Harkening a call from Dean Sam Candler to view our Cathedral community as Godgiven and God-graced, we sought to increase pledging and fellowship.

As described in the 2015 stewardship brochure: “You are invited to make a pledge to God through the Cathedral of St. Philip. Join in making a financial commitment, as well as a commitment to attending a Sunday service and a Bible Study. Contribute generously your time, wisdom and needs. Share your wealth and your sorrows, your joys and your poverty. The church becomes transformational through the collection of our individual gifts” Meredith and Bryant Bateman, Anne and Merritt Dyke, and Al Mullins served as campaign chairs and led our efforts.

As of the end of November, 2016, 1,032 have pledged $3,455,465 compared to 1,145 households that had pledged $3,632,589 in the same period of 2015.

Though these numbers represent a decrease YTD, the number of households and pledges are expected to increase through year’s end. Here are some of the numerical highlights of the year (last year’s comparable numbers in parentheses): Of the 1,032 (1,145) pledges:

The Endowment Fund serves a crucial purpose at the Cathedral of St. Philip by providing for the care and repair of large capital systems that are vital to the operation of the Cathedral. In addition to supporting capital expenditures like repairing and replacing roofs, the Cathedral Endowment Fund supports the music program, covers the cost of maintaining the stained glass windows, and provides substantial financial support to numerous Atlanta social service organizations focused on HIV/AIDS. The fund had a market value of $12,592,880 as of October 31, 2016 compared to $12,562,696 as of October 31, 2015. By the end of October, the Cathedral had received $296,451 from estate bequests and contributions from parishioners. Funds available for distribution are based on a percentage of the value of the fund over the trailing twelve quarters. As of the end of October, $417,347 has been distributed to the Cathedral for projects including music for the Cathedral choirs, computers, media and telephone technology, grants to HIV/AIDS related ministries, replacement roofs on DeOvies Hall and Andrews Cloister Walk, HVAC upgrades, and landscaping improvements.

The trustees of the Endowment Fund continue to add members to the Cathedral Arbor Society, including seven more commitments so far in 2016.

The chairman of the Endowment Board of Trustees is Ann Burns. Susan Graham, Steve Merz, Ray Hill, and Alan McClure serve as trustees. The Dean, Senior Warden Mary Caroline Cravens, and Junior Warden Rob Adams serve as trustees by virtue of their office.

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN AND GIFTS The Cathedral community made additional significant investments in the Cathedral complex over the past year.

Most notably, several families invested in the renovation of the hardscaping and landscaping in front of the church. This multi-year improvement will repair and replace deteriorated hardscaping, improve campus accessibility, and include planting hundreds of shrubs, trees, and groundcover.

CHAPTER The Chapter is the governing body of the Cathedral that determines policy issues, sets goals, and provides stewardship of the Cathedral’s complex operations. The Chapter reviews the activities of each of the Cathedral’s parochial entities and ministries on an annual basis, and reviews the church’s financials on a monthly basis.

Unlike the vestries of smaller parishes, the Chapter does not usually get involved in the day-to-day activities of the Cathedral; instead, the Chapter of the Cathedral functions similarly to a Board of Trustees.

Each year, a Nominating Committee identifies a slate of six candidates for the Chapter. Members are elected at the annual parish meeting in December for a three-year term.
