REPORT The Cathedral of St. Philip

“NONE OTHER THAN THE HOUSE OF GOD, THE GATE OF HEAVEN” Jacob dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. …And Jacob said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.” (Genesis 28:12,17) I know that the world contains many holy places, many sacred destinations, many places we might discover are the house of God. Some of them are natural, out in the wild; and some of them have been carefully crafted and tended by people of good faith.

They are places where we can touch heaven, and where heaven can touch us.

Well, I discover—and claim!—year after year that the Cathedral of St. Philip is just such a holy place. It is a place where angels ascend and descend, which is also to say that it is a place where pilgrims come and go. I am thankful to be dean of such a sacred place as the Cathedral of St. Philip.

A holy place both gives and receives. A sacred destination both locates grace and distributes grace.

There, angels descend and ascend. So it is that we at

the Cathedral of St. Philip have emphasized our role as a sacred destination, a place where God and prayer can be found and located. But we are also a place which sends out grace and holiness. We send out missionaries and holy people.

What a complex community we have become! With so many various ministries and parochial entities here, I sometimes call myself—not the dean of the cathedral—but the mayor of the village! However, first and foremost, we are a parish church, a holy and graceful community sending and receiving pilgrims.

Prayer, and structures for prayer, are what we do here. As a house of prayer for all people, we pray. We experience God. We serve. The reason so many are drawn and gathered here is because we honor prayer and service.

Our staff community sent out some servants this past year! And we welcomed some! We said goodbye to the Reverend Canon Wallace Marsh, one of the great priests of the Episcopal Church. And we honored the retirement of David Fishburn, one of the great organists of the Episcopal Church! But we welcomed three new directors of critical ministries here, parochial entities which are truly part of our village.

These positions were critical to our successful year, and I thank Canon George Maxwell, Vicar, for guiding the arrival here of Janel Green at the Cathedral Towers, Sara Craig-Goodell at the Cathedral Farmers Market, and Laurie Campbell at the Cathedral Preschool (and thanks to Teddi Bair for chairing the Preschool Search

Committee!). We also welcomed the Reverend Canon Lauren Holder here, a priest who has brought energy and insight to our community.

Our new Cathedral Arts Committee helped us welcome the powerful Biblical art of Bernard Gore here. Our astounding music programs welcomed the Atlanta Symphony Brass Orchestra, the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra, the St. Paul’s Cathedral Boys Choir, and the brilliant new ensemble, VOCES8.

Those pilgrims helped us inspire grace and beauty here.

We sent out pilgrims, too! Members and friends of our community took sacred pilgrimages to the Iona Community in Scotland, and to mission service in Haiti. Of course, most members of this wider Cathedral community serve simply by living and working here in this city and state. In so doing, John Champion was recognized as the Habitat For Humanity Volunteer of the Year (parishioner Will Klein was so recognized last year); and parishioner Rex Fuqua was recognized as Philanthropist of the Year.

The Cathedral of St. Philip was a sacred destination for so many other saints, too, including some excellent speakers and teachers. Cynthia Bourgeault returned!

Naim Pateek, a Palestinian Anglican priest, shared his story. We welcomed Becca Stevens of Thistle Farms; and Major General (retired) James Everett Livingston spoke on Veterans Day. Greg Garrett was our Jane Baird lecturer for the Cathedral Book Store, and the Reverend Paul-Gordon Chandler (formerly priest in Cairo, Egypt) shared inspiration from Kahlil Gibran.

Hey! Our friend and former canon of the Cathedral, Beth Knowlton (now serving in San Antonio) returned to lead our Women’s Retreat!

In my own service, I was honored to be called out from the Cathedral of St. Philip to teach and preach in a variety of settings. I was the Baccalaureate speaker for Holy Innocents Episcopal School, and a guest preacher at All Saints Chapel, Linville, North Carolina. I served as plenary speaker at the Preaching Excellence Program in Rosslyn, Virginia. I served (for the ninth time?) as deputy to The General Convention of The Episcopal Church in Austin, Texas this past year. At that convention, I was elected to the Board of Trustees of The Church Pension Fund. I have also been appointed to the Episcopal Church Task Force on Prayer Book Revision. I participated in the Berkeley Divinity School Leadership Forum, and I was guest preacher at the School of Theology, Sewanee, Tennessee.

A sacred destination, a holy place, the Cathedral of St. Philip nurtures holiness especially by tending to holy routines. We would not be able to do what we do, to serve whom we serve, without being disciplined about our sacred routines of liturgy: daily prayer and Eucharist, and beautiful Sunday Eucharist services.

Hundreds of us prepare and serve in those routines.

Thank you! Such discipline enables our beautiful Christmas Eve and Easter morning services, our tremendous All Saints’ Day Requiem Eucharist and Dinner for the Homeless, and the countless weddings and funerals and pastoral offices which we provide here.

I want to note one particular funeral this past year, where I was honored to preside and preach: the funeral of the delightful and devoted and esteemed Episcopal priest, the Reverend Austin Ford. As a true missionary priest of the Diocese of Atlanta (having started both St. Bartholomew’s Church and Emmaus House), he touched both Atlanta and the world with service to the poor and love for all. The Cathedral of St. Philip was honored to serve at his funeral, honored to be the holy place from which his angelic spirit ascended to heaven.

There is more to come! The Cathedral of St. Philip is also a sacred destination on the internet and through live-streaming services. We have a community of pilgrims who view our Sunday services through Facebook and our website. I particularly thank Brant McCaskill, audio-visual technician par excellence, and Dan Murphy for tending to those sacred tasks of technology oversight and production.

As always, I thank my wonderful wife, Boog, for serving beside me in all sorts of ways here. She has her own ministries for sure (though she retired from teaching at the Cathedral Preschool this year), but her behind-the-scenes support of my life and time here is invaluable. And I thank the devoted staff of the Cathedral in a similar way. I cannot name all of them, but I emphasize the Senior Canon Staff: George Maxwell, Cathy Zappa, Dale Adelmann, and Lauren Holder. Thank you, friends and colleagues!

Together, we tend a truly holy place, a sacred destination, the Cathedral Parish of St. Philip, a house of prayer for all people.

FROM THE WARDENS For us, the Cathedral is a beautiful church to call home. A quiet walk through the building and across the grounds affirms this! And while we are blessed with a magnificent physical space for worship and congregation, our parish community—its people, ministries, programs and efforts—form the true inner beauty of this place. Inside and out, our Cathedral home develops our faith, nurtures our relationships with each other, and “sends us out into the world to do the work God has given us to do.”

SPIRITUAL FORMATION

We come together for worship, study, and quiet reflection. Our foundation of common prayer is supported through six Sunday services during the program year as well as daily Morning Prayer, 12:15 Eucharist, bi-weekly Evening Prayer, and a monthly Taizé service. We are thankful for our clergy and staff who plan and write liturgies, assist, celebrate, and deliver thoughtful preaching. We give thanks for the many lay ministers that contribute time and talents: lay readers, ushers, vergers, choir members, audio visual experts, acolytes, and sextons. We celebrate your good and impactful work! An essential element of a healthy

parish is also a devoted, faithful congregation. We give thanks for your committed pledging and your presence throughout each week.

We are especially grateful this year for the arrival of Canon Lauren Holder, who began her ministry here in January. Her talents as a spiritual leader and wonderful communicator create new forms of connection with our parish: her weekly Lenten series, the “Word to Your Mother” book group, and leadership of Cathedral outreach. Her focus on hospitality has made our church more welcoming with purposeful attention on newcomer oriented events and thoughtful follow up.

In May we celebrated Canon Wallace Marsh’s seven-year ministry at the Cathedral as he began a new chapter with his family in Thomasville, Georgia. His daily presence is missed, but we remain grateful for his lasting impact on pastoral care and group formation— the Sons of Thunder men’s group thanks you!

We are also formed by Sunday School, Bible studies, quiet days, lecture series, book clubs, pilgrimages, and centering prayer. We welcomed back a familiar face as Beth Knowlton led the Women’s Lenten Retreat. Canon Cathy Zappa led a group of sixteen parishioners on a pilgrimage to Iona, Scotland with

the Rev. John Philip Newell. We also welcomed Becca Stevens, noted priest, author, and founder of Thistle Farms, to lead our Spirituality Conference.

Godly Play remains a cornerstone of our children’s spiritual formation. We again hosted training for the curriculum this year, not only for the Cathedral but for parishes around the country. Youth ministries has prospered under the guidance of Maggie Paul and welcomed Taylor McCutcheon as assistant youth minister. We continue to give thanks for the loving care of the Nurturing Center staff, as well as Parents Morning Out. The spiritual milestones of our parish community are nurtured and celebrated in many ways. Over 70 baptisms have occurred in the past year. Canon Zappa led our first youth confirmation retreat at Camp Mikell in January. In April, Bishop Wimberly confirmed a class of 80(!) youth and adults. Fourteen marriages have been blessed this year—thank you Wedding Guild for your faithful and beautiful assistance in these celebrations! We are also grateful for our clergy’s collective devotion to attentive pastoral care. Janie Harris has added pastoral care to her responsibilities in addition to stewardship, creating more staff support.

The dedicated members of St. Ruth’s Ministry ensure that each funeral the Cathedral has the privilege to host, 47 thus far this year, is handled with grace, excellence and hospitality.

Our music program has had an amazing year. The Cathedral Choir and Schola add beauty to our worship at over 150 services each year, rehearsing nearly 300 times—thank you for such dedication! We were honored to recognize organist David Fishburn with the status of Organist Emeritus upon his retirement after 32 years of incredible service. Patrick Scott is now organist and associate choirmaster and directs our Chorister program and we also welcomed Jack Mitchener as arganist and artist-in-residence. Canon Dale Adelmann was recognized in September with an Honorary Fellowship from the Royal School of Church Music—we are grateful to have such talented and committed people supporting our spiritual formation through exceptional music!

RELATIONSHIP BUILDING Being in relationship is vital—fellowship binds us closer to one another, providing strong fibers that create a parish community rather than a collection of individuals attending Church. Our relationships are formed in committee meetings, book clubs, Bible studies, and over coffee in the Atrium and Child Hall.

They are strengthened through the friendships that extend beyond our parish life. We are thankful for the many opportunities to foster healthy relationships in our community.

Our annual parish retreat at Kanuga was again well attended and provided a fun-filled kickoff to summer.

Wednesdays on the Lawn returned in late April offering a mid-week get-together and a chance for our children to get some energy out as spring fever set in—thank you Lisa McNamara! Meals nourish and connect. We are thankful for the many opportunities we have to break bread—Shrove Tuesday pancake supper, Advent wreath making and spaghetti supper, newcomer dinners, stewardship dinners, and Wednesday lunches are but a few. Management of our kitchen has strengthened this year through bringing on the talented chef Lauren Raymond full time.

We are thankful for our wonderful ECW, our oldest parochial entity, and the six guilds that comprise it.

They hosted Awake to Wellness and used their financial resources to make meaningful contributions to the Arrendale Prison Family Center and to redecorate the Lanier House apartment. Our guilds provide strong support to the parish’s outreach efforts—St. Veronica’s jewelry show, St. Anne’s support of BCM’s food pantry, and St. Clare’s involvement with the foot clinic at Church of the Common Ground are but a few examples of their positive impact.

Hispanic Ministries is an ever-strengthening element of our congregational life at the Cathedral.

Deacon Juan Sandoval’s presence on staff provides dedicated vision and leadership for our programs.

Notable highlights include the growth in attendance of our Spanish speaking 11:15 service in Mikell Chapel, a Taste of Latin American dinner in October, and five Quinciñera celebrations this year. Our LaAmistad program provides valuable after school tutoring weekly. We are also thankful for our Spanish speaking-clergy that support this ministry—Canon Zappa, Canon Holder, and Dr. Bill Harkins.

ENGAGEMENT WITH THE COMMUNITY AND THE WORLD

Our parochial entities are an important part of our long-term ministry and serve our community in diverse and beneficial ways. A few of them have experienced healthy leadership transitions over the past year. The nationally recognized Cathedral Farmers Market named Sara Craig-Goodell as its new director in February. The Cathedral Preschool completed a strategic planning process and its new director, Laurie Campbell, joined in June. We are thankful for Cheryl Mullins, who shepherded the Preschool through its transition as interim director.

Finally, Cathedral Towers named Janel Green its new director in August. Welcome to each! These leaders bring valuable experience and a deep understanding of our common mission. We have tremendous gratitude for our vicar, Canon George Maxwell, and numerous parishioners that guided these smooth transitions through leadership on boards, search committees, and strategic planning groups.

The Cathedral Antiques Show continued its excellent commitment to deserving outreach organizations in our community, enabling 2018 beneficiary A.G. Rhodes to provide improved care to its residents

living with dementia. Preparation for the 2019 show is well underway for its beneficiary Wilderness Works.

The Thrift House maintains a 70+ year presence in the Buckhead community and generates valuable funds for outreach. The Cathedral Counseling Center continues its caring work under the leadership of Christy Gituku. Friends of Cathedral Music treats us to delights throughout the year including the Boys Choir of St. Paul’s Cathedral London, VOCES8, and a continued artists in residence relationship with the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra. Our Cathedral Book Store remains a unique treasure. We are grateful for these entities as they send the inner beauty of the Cathedral beyond our parish walls!

We are proud to be part of a parish that recognizes the needs of its community and beyond. Through food drives, toy drives, meal preparation, blessings of runners on July 4, visits to shelters, prison ministries, and mission opportunities, our parish community has a big heart and provides help to those in need. A significant milestone for our dedicated Habitat team­— completion of their 30th house this year! Canon Zappa led 24 parishioners, including 13 youth, on a pilgrimage to Haiti in June. Our Homeless Requiem Eucharist and dinner remains an integral piece of our All Saints’ week services, where our parish offers

presence and remembrance to so many who are often ignored. Through the leadership of Canon Holder our relationships with Church of the Common Ground, Crossroads, Emmaus House, and Buckhead Christian Ministry continue to grow stronger.

In addition to their vast responsibilities guiding our complex orbit of organizations, formal and informal, The dean and the vicar actively support our purpose beyond our walls throughout the year. Both have served as guest preachers across the country and represent our parish on a vast array of boards and organizations vital to the mission of the Church. In July, the dean served as a deputy (for the 9th time!) at General Convention of the Episcopal Church and heads a committee on revisions to the Book of Common Prayer. We thank them both for their steady leadership of our parish and across the broader Episcopal community!

OUR CHURCH HOME Our church home has been improved over the past year through the financial generosity of fellow parishioners and steady guidance of our talented staff. Take a walk through our grounds to experience how our outdoor landscapes have been beautifully enhanced. Attend a service in Mikell Chapel to hear the magnificent new Schoenstein organ dedicated in March. Thank you David Rocchio for your tireless attention to the stewardship and improvement of our campus! The collective joyful giving of our parish, and the attentive daily efforts of our sexton staff, ensures that our church is welcoming house of prayer for all people! Dan Murphy continues to explore new technologies and innovative ways to communicate and interact through live streams of services, thoughtful use of social media platforms, and a more user-friendly website. His efforts enable access to sermons, classes, photos, and videos to those who are unable to congregate within our walls.

Indeed the Cathedral is sacred space to call home.

From our perspective, as we walk together in worship, relationship, and outreach, the inner spirit of this parish shines beautifully out to the world. We are proud to call the Cathedral our spiritual home because of you—our inspirational clergy, our excellent staff, our dedicated fellow parishioners—who breathe life and spirit into its walls!

WORSHIP those who died on the streets of Atlanta during the past year. Finally, as the Cathedral church for the Diocese of Atlanta, we also host confirmation services, ordinations to the diaconate and priesthood, and other special diocesan services.

Many thanks to all who contribute their time and talent to the worship of God and assistance in our corporate worship: youth and adult acolytes; Cathedral Choir, Schola, and Choristers; Altar Guild; Flower Guild; Eucharistic visitors and Eucharistic ministers; ushers; lectors and intercessors; vergers; Wedding Guild; Funeral Guild; Baptism Guild; brass polishers; Children’s Chapel leaders; and all the wonderful people of God who worship here day after day, and week after week.

Finally, we are also very grateful for Hillary Jones, program coordinator for worship, who helps the clergy and volunteers offer worship that is an experience of grace, excellence, and hospitality.

WORSHIP

Worship is at the center of our religious life and sustains the work that we do in the world.

The word liturgy means “work of the people.” That is definitely the case here at the Cathedral as more than 700 members are involved in orchestrating the worship life of this community.

Every Sunday during the program year, the Cathedral offers six services of worship, including a Holy Eucharist in Spanish and special children’s worship.

The Eucharist is celebrated daily at 12:15 p.m. in St. Mary’s Chapel. The Friday 12:15 p.m. Eucharist includes prayers for healing. A monthly Taizé service is held on the third Monday at 8 p.m. in Mikell Chapel, and Morning and Evening Prayer are offered in Mikell Chapel periodically through the week.

Holy Baptism is celebrated seven times a year on major feast days, and special services are offered during Advent, Lent, Holy Week, and Easter. On St. Francis’ Day, we blessed our pets who joined us in church. On All Saints’ Sunday, we remembered those who have died this past year by offering a beautiful Choral Eucharist.

On November 1, we hosted more than 400 guests for the 30th Annual Homeless Requiem, commemorating

MUSIC normally sing our Sunday afternoon choral services, Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, as well as occasional special services. Our 4 p.m. choral services continue to grow: attendance on a typical Sunday afternoon has doubled in recent years, and special choral services attract much larger congregations. On average 50 people from all over the world listen to the recordings of these services on our website each week. Considering the number of people who attend 4 p.m. services regularly and periodically, and others who never miss a service of Lessons and Carols (Advent, Christmas, A Meditation on the Passion of Christ, with Carols) or our All Saints’ Sunday Requiem, the Cathedral’s Sunday afternoon choral services easily minister to thousands of individuals each year.

The Cathedral Choristers currently number 25 children, led by our newly titled organist and associate choirmaster, Patrick Scott. The St. Cecilia Choristers were created this autumn to give choristers who have worked to advanced levels in our adaptation of the Royal School of Church Music training scheme an opportunity to further their skills with additional musical challenges.

After a distinguished 32-year tenure, our beloved David Fishburn retired as associate organist and

Worship is the very core of the Cathedral’s music ministry. We recognize that the Holy Spirit will never run out of ways to inspire us through music, and we work diligently to bring a wide variety of music to life— old and new—on a weekly basis, as our choirs support congregational singing and offer anthems at some 160 services year-round. Because we are committed to worshiping within a tradition that is dynamic, not static, we regularly add new anthems, masses, and canticle settings to our repertoire—some 300 in the past nine years—while also offering rarely performed, major sacred choral works extra-liturgically.

Currently the Cathedral Choir is comprised of more than 40 auditioned volunteers supported by 12 dedicated staff singers. In addition to leading the 11:15 a.m. service each Sunday, they do double duty on All Saints’ Sunday, Christmas Eve, and Easter Day, as well as on one Sunday once a month at 8:45 and 11:15 a.m. Rotating halves of the Choir sing both Sunday morning services in the nave throughout the summer.

They also sing for the Homeless Requiem, Maundy Thursday, and for occasional Sunday afternoon and diocesan services.

The Cathedral Schola is our chamber ensemble of 30 singers, selected from the Cathedral Choir, who

choirmaster and was named Organist Emeritus by the Cathedral Chapter. We fêted him with a recital by former Canon for Music Bruce Neswick, a festive Evensong, and a reception following the final Evensong of the season in May. David retains an office at the Cathedral next door to Jack Mitchener, his successor, who we were delighted to welcome to our staff as organist and artist-in-residence in August.

Tim Gunter continues as our administrative coordinator for music with grace, dedication, and efficiency. During 2018, 110 children participated the Allegro Music for Young Children program, lovingly taught by Brenda Pruitt. Allegro employs a Musikgarten curriculum and provides an opportunity for babes-in-arms to children in second grade, both from the parish and the broader community, to learn to sing and love music in small weekly classes throughout the year.

Our Friends of Cathedral Music enhance our music ministry by providing funding and hospitality to present major sacred masterworks and other musical events that do not fit within the normal bounds of our rich liturgical life. In 2018 the Friends underwrote an epic performance of Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. John Passion, performed by the Cathedral Choir and Schola, Atlanta Baroque Orchestra (now in its third season as artists-in-residence), and a world-class cast of soloists, notably including the renowned tenor evangelist, Rufus Müller. We welcomed back Dr. Kenneth Miller, now assistant professor of church music at the School of Theology at Sewanee, to give the pre-concert lecture.

Friends of Cathedral Music also hosted concerts by two of England’s finest choirs—the Boys of St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, and VOCES8 (their première Atlanta performance)—and presented the second annual Atlanta Symphony Brass Holiday Concert. All were magnificent experiences and well attended. As a gift to the parish, Friends provided a harpist for Easter Day and the orchestra for the Cathedral Choir’s liturgical offering of Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem on All Saints’ Sunday afternoon.

The Cathedral is now blessed with three distinguished organs. The Thomas Ruben Jones Memorial Organ (Schoenstein & Co., San Francisco) was inaugurated and dedicated in March with recitals

by David Fishburn, Patrick Scott, and Marie Pettet.

We are grateful to organists Nancy Dickson and Leslie Boyette (9 a.m.), and Karen Bunn (11:15 a.m. Spanish

service), who now have a magnificent instrument with which to serve our Mikell Chapel congregations each Sunday. The beautiful Moore-Wilkerson continuo organ (Henk Klop, The Netherlands) was dedicated in September and is in frequent use to accompany early music during worship in the nave. Our AeolianSkinner organ continues to be the envy of organists everywhere: 15 of our 24 Sunday afternoon recitals in 2018 were played by out-of-state organists who traveled from New York, Oregon, Texas, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, and Germany for the pleasure of playing this magnificent instrument in our gracious acoustic. In June, Robert Huw Morgan, Stanford University organist, performed the Cathedral’s offering in the Atlanta Summer Organ Festival.

Music is very much a living tradition at the Cathedral of St. Philip, constantly renewed by the hard work, musicianship, and spirituality brought to it by our wonderful, committed singers and staff. Our tradition also lives because we regularly expand our experience of the Divine by exploring and engaging with music that is new to us, be it old music or newly composed. We do this because the God we seek and serve can never be fully known, and every generation creates new music by which we may catch glimpses of the Creator—that is, through music in which the sum of the experience transcends the identifiable, explicable parts. May we always be open to hear what the Spirit is saying through the music and worship we offer.

SPIRITUALITY Seasonally, to help us center during Advent and Lent, the Cathedral offered quiet days, led by Canon George Maxwell and Lisa Persons respectively, and a Lenten women’s retreat, led the Rev. Beth Knowlton.

Our 2019 retreat will be at St. Mary’s Sewanee, from March 29–31.

In addition to these seasonal and annual offerings, we also have an EfM group, a weekly centering prayer group (Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. in the Lanier House), and a monthly Taizé service (every third Monday at 8 p.m. in Mikell Chapel). Taizé is a contemplative form of prayer and worship that combines light, simple chants, and silence.

The Cathedral’s labyrinth ministry remains vibrant, with facilitated labyrinth walks before the monthly Taizé service and during Holy Week. The indoor labyrinth is available for prayer and meditation most Sundays from 3–7 p.m., and the outdoor labyrinth is always available. We also have a high quality, portable labyrinth, which we loan out to other organizations.

We are blessed to have a core group of Veriditastrained volunteer labyrinth facilitators who tend this ministry and provide outreach to groups requesting presentations and labyrinth walks.

WORSHIP

The Cathedral of St. Philip strives to be “a house of prayer for all people.” We pray through worship, Bible studies, educational series, and our life and ministry together. With the support of our Spiritual Formation and Nurture Committee, we are able to offer many other opportunities to enrich your spiritual journey and prayer practice.

One of this year’s opportunities was our pilgrimage this summer to Iona, Scotland! In June, 16 Cathedral pilgrims traveled to Iona to learn more about Celtic spirituality from John Philip and Ali Newell and to spend time in prayer, fellowship, and God’s glorious creation.

Another opportunity was our tenth annual Spirituality Conference on November 3, with the Rev. Becca Stevens. Becca is an author, Episcopal priest, and social-justice entrepreneur who founded Magdalene House and Thistle Farms to help survivors of human trafficking and addiction. She and her colleagues led us in an exploration of creative and relevant ways of practicing justice, healing, and love.

We look forward to hosting Dr. Lerita Coleman Brown for our next Spirituality Conference, on October 26, 2019. Dr. Brown is a spiritual director, writer, retreat leader, and professor of psychology. She is also an expert on Howard Thurman, who is often considered one of the spiritual architects of the civil rights movement and whose example and theology were very formative for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. Brown will be leading us in a contemplative exploration of Thurman’s life and work.

This year, we also partnered with Contemplative Outreach to bring Cynthia Bourgeault here for a spring conference on “The Heart of Centering Prayer.”

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION Education in a Christian community is primarily the practice of teaching and learning how to be Christian. There are, of course, certain things that we need to know in order to fully live out our calling as followers of Christ. Our Christian education classes address these “need to know” items, including the language and practices of the Christian people, but always in the context of who we are.

Narrative is essential to the formation of children and youth. Our youngest children focus much of their time on hearing and responding to the stories of God’s people. As children grow and mature, the emphasis shifts from internalization of the Christian narrative to more explicitly placing

ourselves within that narrative and exploring its implications for our lives. The story of God’s work in the world continues into our community today, so we spend time not only listening and responding to the ancient stories but working together in the world to live out our call as Christians.

Our adult classes are designed to continue the practice of thinking theologically in a variety of contexts, to provide an interpretative framework for people who want to live faithful lives.

We invite people of all ages into the practice of learning through creative, developmentally appropriate methods of teaching and community building.

Clergy and parishioners work together to create a variety of excellent, engaging educational offerings for adults, which allow us to grow in community; engage theologically the questions of our time; and reflect together on our faith, scripture, and tradition.

On Sunday mornings, we have both ongoing classes and special series that meet for just a few weeks.This fall, we have been taking a deep dive into the Bible, with an Old Fashioned Sunday School series on the theology of St. Paul; a Living Faith series on “Falling in Love with the Bible Again;” a small group Bible study; and a class on Biblical Greek. We have welcomed several guest speakers this last year, including The Right Rev. Neil Alexander, Major General (retired) James Everett Livingston, the Reverend Paul-Gordon Chandler, as

well as all those who joined us for our summer series of “Faithful Conversations.”

Outside of Sunday morning, parishioners gather to learn and grow through regular Bible studies and book groups, Education for Ministry seminars, confirmation classes, and seasonal offerings and special lectures.

The Cathedral also provides on-the-ground formation for future church leaders. This year, we have been a site placement for two seminarians: Nicole Lambelet from Candler School of Theology, and Caroline Carson from Sewanee School of Theology.

YOUTH We have a wide range of youth programs, from Sunday School to EYC to ski trips and more, that help our youth grow in faith, ministry, and community. This summer, we ventured back to Haiti on a mission pilgrimage with 25 pilgrims of various ages. The trip provided many learning experiences as well as God moments, and we look forward to growing our outreach efforts by building relationships with the Cathedral Towers and Emmaus House.

Cathedral youth remain active leaders in the church and in their communities, through acolyting, service, diocesan opportunities, and support of one another.

This year, our Youth Leadership Team continues to grow, as four juniors and seniors are joined by three freshmen to help plan big events and serve as peer mentors for our eighth-grade confirmands. With these leaders and many others, our participation in diocesan youth events, especially Happening, has been on the rise. We even had one of our seniors serve as a delegate to Annual Council.

With the help of adult leaders, our Sunday School classes continue to grow and expand. Our middle school curriculum, “Collaborate: Bible Study” by Sparkhouse is taking us on a journey through the New Testament. In anticipation of Confirmation, eighth graders will turn this spring to how these narratives are continued in the Episcopal tradition. In our high

school class, “Becoming Rooted and Grounded,” we are taking a deep dive into the history, practices, and controversies of our Anglican communion during the fall semester in order to better prepare ourselves for conversation and discussion about other religions and faiths this coming spring.

Finally, we continued our Raising Youth series this fall, designed to support the most important ministers in the lives of our youth—their parents and families.

The youth ministry team supports students throughout the week with breakfast and lunch meetings, sporting events attendance, and simply being available as a relatable adult when life’s challenges arise.

CHILDREN Godly Play continues to inform all that we do with children. We renewed our membership with the National Godly Play Foundation, giving us access to special webinars, curriculum updates, and continuing education programs. In 2018 we hosted two Core Trainings for our volunteers and for parishes around the Southeast. We also hosted and participated in Advanced Training. Our six mixed-aged classrooms are home to spiritual formation for children ages two and a half through fifth grade on Sunday mornings, and twice-weekly meetings with the participants in LaAmistad, the after school tutoring program for Hispanic children from Garden Hills Elementary School.

We offer Children’s Chapel for children who are ages three through third grade. We break into two different groups based on age. We enjoy music and an age-appropriate child’s version of our liturgy.

Our wonderful team of chapel and music leaders are led by the amazing Sara Chapman. We owe a huge amount of gratitude to them and our talented Godly Play teachers.

We also welcomed children and their families to special liturgies and events outside of the regular Sunday morning routine. The Shrove Tuesday pancake

supper, Ash Wednesday and Maundy Thursday family services, Week of Wonder, book bag blessing, Halloween costume blessing, LaAmistad costume blessing and fall festival, Advent wreath making, dinner with St. Nicholas, holiday cookie baking, and a Christmas party for LaAmistad volunteers were highlights this year. Baptism workshops and adult Godly Play circles offered parents the opportunity to explore the stories that their children were learning.

OUTREACH The various ministries that make up our Outreach in Atlanta and beyond are rich and varied. Indeed, there are so many ways to serve our community, it can be difficult to know where to start. This year we started sending monthly Outreach Update emails, where people can opt in to a summary of what’s coming soon, what’s needed now, and what has just occurred.

CHURCH OF THE COMMON GROUND We decided to deepen our partnership with Church of the Common Ground (CCG) after our long-time partner in homeless ministry, the shelter at PeachtreePine, closed last year. CCG is an Episcopal Church without walls, worshiping in Woodruff Park every Sunday at 1 p.m. Cathedral parishioners make lunches for and worship with CCG parishioners the first Sunday of every other month. It is a beautiful acapella service with honest prayers and great preaching!

FAITHFUL CONVERSATIONS Canons Cathy Zappa and Lauren Holder hosted a summer series of Faithful Conversations in Child Hall, inviting various ministry partners throughout the community to share with us how their faith informs their work. We continue to search for educational opportunities that grow our understanding of serving Christ in all persons.

So many of our ministry partners in Atlanta are supported by the wonderful work of the various guilds associated with Episcopal Church Women. The ladies are getting it done—whether it is hosting Church of the Common Ground for a labyrinth walk, packing toiletry bags, collecting Christmas gifts for children at Emmaus House, or volunteering with the Cathedral Antiques Show benefiting Wilderness Works. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY We built our 30th house this year! And our Habitat volunteers continue to connect with 23 of the original homeowners through thoughtful Christmas baskets assembled and distributed each year. We are looking forward to getting to know a new homeowner this spring as we build our 31st Habitat home.

HOLY COMFORTER Twice a year, the Cathedral is invited to worship with and serve a community meal to Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, mostly comprised of persons living with mental illness. This year our choirs have made an intentional move to support our Holy Comforter partnership, and the parish looks forward to the music as much as the food and time spent together at the table! We are grateful to the choir for sharing their unique gifts so lovingly.

HOMELESS REQUIEM AND DINNER For 30 years now, the Cathedral has worshiped alongside our homeless neighbors in an annual Requiem service. Every November 1, Child Hall is filled with food and fellowship for all, the Atrium is filled with service providers caring for our homeless peers, and the sanctuary is filled with the songs and prayers of the Voices of Hope Choir, the Cathedral choirs, and people near and far. As one of our Church of the Common Ground friends noted this fall, “This is a funeral for our people,” and the Cathedral is honored to provide sacred space for the most vulnerable among us. We are grateful to the many volunteers and service providers who share their time and energy so freely.

MISSION-PILGRIMAGE TO HAITI Our youth ventured to Cap-Haiten again in June to further solidify relationships forged at Eternal Hope in Haiti, a Georgia-based non-profit that provides health care to people in need and operates an orphanage for medically fragile and/or critically ill children. It is a holy time of learning, praying, serving, and relationship building.

PRISON MINISTRY The Cathedral continues its relationship with Arrendale State Prison through worship, teaching reentry classes on anything from budgeting to housing to healthcare, and volunteering at the Arrendale Children’s Center where children are able to visit their mothers in a supportive and fun environment.

Our Prison Ministry Committee meets regularly to consider additional opportunities to support people leaving prison—currently through mentorship, and perhaps one day through housing. It is an exciting time of discernment, and we welcome committed volunteers and creative minds.

RICKS WHEELER GRANTS FOR HIV/AIDS The grants committee awarded $28,679 to seven community partners serving people living with HIV/ AIDS. These awards were made possible through the generous gift to the Cathedral endowment by the late Jim Ricks. It is always inspiring to visit and receive updates from grant recipients, and we are honored to partner with them in this meaningful work.

PASTORAL CARE The Cathedral offers the values of Philip the Deacon—grace, excellence, and hospitality—in the midst of difficulty and transition. Philip had the grace to baptize the eunuch. He had the excellence to explain the gospel. Philip had the hospitality to join the Ethiopian eunuch; he got up into the chariot with him (Acts 8:26–40).

After Philip baptizes the Ethiopian eunuch, scripture says he is “snatched up” and disappears.

This serves as a reminder that our mission is to offer pastoral care during transitions. The pastoral care ministry does not have the experience, personnel, or resources to provide long-term care, case management, or financial assistance. However, we do have the ability to connect you with agencies whose mission is to provide such care.

We are blessed with a great pastoral care ministry. Janie Harris came on as program coordinator last year, and is working closely to serve the needs of our community.

Canon Carolynne Williams and Deacon Juan Sandoval continue their ministry by making pastoral visits during the week.

This programmatic year we are working closely with the Cathedral Counseling Center by offering a variety of classes and workshops.

HISPANIC MINISTRIES Many of the members of our Hispanic ministry also participated with the annual Taste of Latin America.

This is a festive occasion in which members from the 12 Hispanic churches bring typical food from their country and share with the community. It is held in Child Hall and the purpose of this is to establish community and raise money to send to a needy country or charity. We hope more parishioners of all the churches from the Diocese of Atlanta will come and join us in 2019 for this event.

We will continue to serve the community with baptisms, quinceaĂąeras, weddings, presentations, confirmation classes, and adult education. All are welcome to attend these Spanish-language services.

The Venerable Juan Sandoval Deacon for Hispanic Ministries

COMMUNITY

The Hispanic ministry has been consistent and growing over the past year. The Sunday services are held at 11:15 a.m. with Deacon Juan Sandoval and one of three presbyters: the Rev. Dr. Bill Harkins, Canon Lauren Holder, and Canon Cathy Zappa. The Hispanic community has grown with a consistent group of families who attend service regularly.

During the past year we have had seven baptisms, one confirmation, four presentations of a 40 day old, one presentation of a 3 year old, 23 informed communions, one Holy Matrimony, and seven quinceaĂąeras. Additionally, this past summer, two children, rising sixth and seventh graders, attended summer camp at Camp Mikell. Several of the families have participated in the blessing of the backpacks and blessing of the costumes.

We will celebrate the Feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe on December 11 and will host a Posada on December 22 followed by a small celebration in Child Hall.

The Cathedral of St. Philip is one of the largest Episcopal churches in the country. It is like a vibrant village of interconnected neighborhoods, making the space more intimate with each relationship that is forged. Our parish is comprised of so many wonderful small groups—too many to list here.

And yet if there’s a need for community not being filled, a new group will often form to support the community further. Two new groups that formed this year are a knitting group and a book club for busy moms. Needs that have been expressed and not yet filled include a 30s-40s singles group and an LGBTQ group. If you are interested in plugging into an existing or emerging group, please contact Canon Lauren Holder!

This fall we invited parishioners and guests to participate in an interactive Día de Los Muertos art installation. People of all ages wrote down names of loved ones who have died on bright strips of fabric. Hundreds of names then hung around the Atrium, creating a rainbow of remembrance. It

was an especially colorful way to come together as a community and to lift up our vibrant Hispanic community here at the Cathedral. In the coming year, we will look for other artistic ways to bring our combine creativity together in a communal illustration of love and connection.

STEWARDSHIP ANNUAL FUND Welcome Home defined the 2018 Stewardship Campaign. As outlined in the 2018 brochure: “A good home has a strong foundation. A church is no different.

At the Cathedral, our foundation is built on Worship, Education, Mission, and Community. These marks of the church reflect the mission and programming that we are engaged in on daily basis. Of course, at the center is Community—church is not a building, activities or beliefs. Church is our people. Everything we do builds this beloved community.”

The Campaign was led by chairs Sara and Donnie Chapman, Michelle and Austin Hall, and Holly Kiely. A robust committee hosted “Welcome Home Dinners,” solicited pledges and thanked parishioners many times over for making a financial commitment to the Cathedral.

ENDOWMENT FUND

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN AND GIFTS

The Endowment Fund serves a crucial purpose by providing for the care and repair of large capital systems that are vital to the operation of the Cathedral.

In addition to supporting capital expenditures like repairing and replacing roofs, the Cathedral Endowment Fund supports the music program, covers the cost of maintaining the stained glass windows and provides substantial financial support to numerous Atlanta social service organizations focused on HIV/AIDS. The fund had a market value of $13,670,982 as of October 31, 2018 compared to $14,474,777 as of October 31, 2017. By the end of October, the Cathedral had received $391,518.79 from estate bequests and contributions from parishioners. Funds available for distribution are based on a percentage of the value of the fund over the trailing twelve quarters. As of the end of October, $620,243 has been distributed to the Cathedral for projects including bell tower lighting improvements; Deanery improvements; waterproofing; Choir Boys of St. Paul’s Cathedral concert; computers, server, and wifi technology; and grants to HIV/AIDS related ministries.

The trustees of the Endowment Fund continue to add members to the Cathedral Arbor Society, which now counts 200 members on the rolls. Bill Marianes, founder of Stewardship Calling, offered an engaging and excellent presentation to the Arbor Society in November.

The chairman of the Endowment Board of Trustees is Ann Burns. Susan Graham, Steve Merz, Ray Hill, Alan McClure, and Scott Rhodes serve as trustees.

Dean Sam Candler, Senior Warden Austin Hall, and Junior Warden Doug O’Bryan serve as trustees by virtue of their office. John McCollum and Holly Sims have been elected to replace outgoing board members Ann Burns and Alan McClure.

The Cathedral community continues to make additional significant investments in the Cathedral complex. The renovation of the hardscaping and landscaping in front of the church continued thanks to the contributions of several families. This multiyear improvement will repair and replace deteriorated hardscaping, improve campus accessibility, and include planting hundreds of shrubs, trees, and groundcover.

In addition, the Lanier House apartment was updated with new furniture, bedding, and linens. Lastly, the Cathedral Art Committee mounted an exhibition of works from Bernard Gore entitled the Word in Wood.

Several pieces from the exhibit have been purchased to be permanently placed at the Cathedral.

IN GRATITUDE I will greatly miss working regularly with Ann Burns as she completes her service on the Cathedral Endowment Board of Trustees in December. Caring, thoughtful, and no-nonsense, Ann has been a steadfast and steady hand at the helm of the Endowment. From vetting investment managers, to allocating monies for needed improvements, to cultivating new members of the Arbor Society, Ann has been an integral part of the Endowment’s growth and success over the past nine years. CHAPTER The Chapter is the governing body of the Cathedral that determines policy issues, sets goals, and provides stewardship of the Cathedral’s complex operations.

The Chapter reviews the activities of each of the Cathedral’s parochial entities and ministries on an annual basis, and reviews the church’s financials on a monthly basis. Unlike the vestries of smaller parishes, the Chapter does not usually get involved in the dayto-day activities of the Cathedral; instead, the Chapter of the Cathedral functions similarly to a board of trustees.

Each year, a nominating committee identifies a slate of six candidates for the Chapter. Members are elected at the annual parish meeting in December for a three-year term.
