2017 parish report

FROM THE DEAN “For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.

For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free— and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. ... If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.”

It has been my great joy to have been teaching Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians in my Bible studies this past fall. What a wonder to hear Paul addressing such petty and mundane church concerns and then, from those issues, his being able to launch into such lofty themes as unity (chapter 12), love (chapter 13), and resurrection (chapter 15).

Here at the Cathedral of St. Philip, this past year has brought me a special appreciation of both the diversity and unity of this community. We are truly one in the body of Christ, but we sure are diverse, too! I wouldn’t have it any other way. I believe we need each other’s diversity

of experience, and we need each other’s diversity of opinion.

As part of the body of Christ here at the Cathedral, it remains important for me to remember that the head of the body is Christ! As dean of the cathedral, I serve as the head of this diverse community; but the head of the body is always Christ!

My annual parish report, then, will review the ways in which I have served; but I will also review the excellent ways that our entire community has served. Thank you!

I continue to revel in teaching and preaching. I love to write—sermons, essays, poetry—but I have also enjoyed sharing that teaching and preaching this past year with

excellent clergy colleagues. Our sermons and articles are not only being published on paper, but they are being distributed several times weekly by email, and by internet, and by internet video streaming.

It was an honor for me to preach the Easter Day sermon for the national radio program, Day 1, this year. I preached in North Carolina and in Canada. I delivered remarks in Washington, D.C., for the installation of Chris Wray as the new director of the FBI. All great fun, too!

Once again, I was the official chaplain, delivering the invocation, for the Fourth of July Peachtree Road Race. And, I was invited to be part of the Standing Commission on Liturgy and Music, for the wider Episcopal Church. It has been good to begin preparing for next summer’s General Convention discussions on prayer book revision!

With your patience, I also still play piano at special events. I was the opening act again at our Memorial Day fundraiser, Chill on the Hill. I was also invited to play piano at the annual celebration of Day 1, this year honoring our own parishioners, Joan and Bill Law. There, I was especially privileged to play jazz with my ministerial colleagues Dwight Andrews and Ozzie Smith. Thank you!

I still serve on the Board of Advisors for the Episcopal Studies Program at Candler School of Theology (at Emory University), and I teach from time to time there. As part of that group, it was also wonderful to host a visit from the Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church, the Right Reverend Michael Curry, this past fall. I also serve on the Board of Trustees of The Westminster Schools.

As head of this community of faith, the Cathedral of St. Philip, it is also my responsibility to steward and oversee our wide variety of ministries and parochial entities. You can read about most of those ministries elsewhere in this report. But I will point out that, in addition to the fun

things like blessing animals on St. Francis Day, and leading our annual parish retreat, I must also tend to complications and crises in our parochial entities. This year, two of our most outstanding cathedral ministries, the Cathedral Preschool and the Cathedral Farmers Market, have required special care and time and work.

And the Cathedral Towers will, too. Each of these ministries is searching for a new director. There has been suffering in some of those places, too; and, as Saint Paul said, when one part of the body suffers, we all suffer. I look forward to rejoicing!

I am always thankful to my wonderful colleague, George Maxwell (vicar and canon) for helping the Cathedral manage those tremendous ministries.

The greater Cathedral community managed everything this year from hurricanes to the installation of a new organ for Mikell Chapel. And members of our community travelled on special pilgrimages. I was glad to have George Maxwell accompany a special diocesan group to Ghana. Canon Cathy Zappa led a diverse parish group in a mission pilgrimage to Haiti last summer. Canon Dale Adelmann, with George Maxwell as chaplain, led our Cathedral Choir last summer in a pilgrimage to London, Salisbury, and Durham.

guests this past year. The former bishop of Atlanta, Neil Alexander (now Dean of the School of Theology at Sewanee) returned to speak one Sunday. Carl McColman spoke at our Book Store event, and Barbara Crafton spoke to our Cathedral ECW. I was honored to host at my house the President of the House of Deputies in the Episcopal Church, Gay Jennings, when she was in town. The former head of Home Depot, Frank Blake, spoke to our inaugural Emile Fisher Volunteer Dinner (formerly known as the Usher Dinner!). The National Vergers Conference worshipped here at the Cathedral. The bishop of Cape Coast, Ghana, Bishop Victor Atta-Bafoe, preached and taught here. And the speaker at our annual Spirituality Conference was my old friend, Barbara Brown Taylor. These excellent speakers and preachers helped make our community holy this past year. In addition to them, however, we were visited by many a parish delegation seeking advice and best practices from other churches.

We were heartened to share what God has done here!

The Body of Christ is a living organism, and we are always both dying and growing. Parts of our body leave, or go elsewhere, or retire, or even die. But I give thanks for some special saints this past year. Nancy Rizor retired as head of the Altar Guild after eighteen years; thank you! Canon Todd Smelser retired—again!—this time from part-time ministry at the Cathedral. What a joy he was here, and we wish Jim and him great joy in Savannah. Finally, my most excellent and wonderful executive assistant, Judy Johnson has retired, after serving on the Cathedral staff for eighteen years, and as my assistant for fourteen of those years. Thank you, Judy, for your faithfulness and attention and care. No one can replace you! However, I am glad that my new assistant is Jeannie Mahood! Jeannie brings her own gifts and care to that critical role. Thank you, Jeannie!

I must also note, sadly, that this past year has brought more than the usual number

of deaths in our own parish. The staff and I have noted over twice as many Cathedral funerals this past year as we have had recently. Why is that, we wonder? I attribute the number to the outstanding and caring pastoral care of the Cathedral staff itself in the past fifteen or twenty years. The effect of that pastoral care is that people, growing older, have not left the Cathedral community; they are still connected here, and their funerals are part of our common life. Though deceased, they are still part of the Body of Christ here.

I cannot note every death, which we do acknowledge each year on All Saints Sunday. But I do want to mention the names of some particularly faithful saints of the parish, some of whose deaths affected us dearly. Most of these saints worshipped and served here regularly, and were true leaders in our community. They were people like Ruth Vaught, Roy Unkefer, Bev Coker, Karen League, Eleanor Strain, Tommy Lanier, Joan Law, Bill Law, Fritz van Winkle, Julia Ballard, Priscilla Harrison Beale, Lillian Braswell, Rose Coar, Mary Elrod, Robert Foreman, Jr., Fulton Green, Sylvia Griffin, Harald Hansen, Dick Jennings, Stuart Peebles, Cleve Wilcoxon, Bill Tipping. Finally, in this category, I

note the deaths of the former dean of the Cathedral this past year, David Collins, and then the death of his wife, Ginny Collins.

There will be more Cathedral staff coming!

There will be more members of the Body of Christ joining our community. I thank God for them! And I thank God for some people quite close to me in this body. First among them is my lovely wife, Boog, whose companionship and partnership is always a valuable part of my ministry. She joins me, always, in serving this beautiful community.

And I thank George Maxwell, the vicar here, without whom none of us would be doing well! And I thank two other excellent priests here, Wallace Marsh and Cathy Zappa. It is an honor for us to be among you. And it is an honor to serve the world through this particular Body of Christ, the Cathedral Parish of St. Philip.

FROM THE WARDENS The best view in town may be from the top of the Cathedral bell tower. It’s breathtaking, and if you are ever invited to climb, do it! Treetops and towers stretch out in every direction, and beyond distant mountains; you cannot see an end. But an even better view is that afforded Cathedral wardens of this community in action. The array of committees we sit on, by virtue of our offices, and the meetings and events we attend during our terms, offer a privileged glimpse of the incredible scope of what this parish does both within and outside these walls. The deep appreciation it gives us for the energy, heart, and reach of this great community almost makes us eager to go to meetings! As this year ends, we celebrate our magnificent view: We celebrate faithful pledging and continued growth in Cathedral membership over the past year, and every parishioner, program, and parochial entity that contributes to the vitality of our community.

Six services each Sunday during the program year, as well as weekday morning prayer and 12:15 Eucharist, weekly evening and centering prayer, and a monthly Taizé service support our foundation in common prayer. These liturgies are made possible by the devoted efforts of innumerable people: clergy, lay ministers, ushers, lectors, flower and Altar Guild members, vergers, acolytes, Eucharistic ministers and visitors, choir members and musicians, brass polishers, sound and lighting masters, graphic artists, and sextons. The Emile Fisher Volunteer Dinner was held in late April to honor the volunteers who make Sundays possible. We celebrate that good and devoted work!

The Cathedral interweaves mission and spirituality through work, study, and opportunities for fellowship and for quiet reflection. People of this parish have built

our 29th Habitat house; held drives for toys, food, clothing, school supplies, and toiletries; participated in preparation and delivery of meals; taken Ash Wednesday ashes to day laborers waiting for jobs; and blessed Road Race runners and dear pets. They have taught Sunday School; taken retreats; attended quiet days, lecture series, and book clubs; and participated in children’s music programs, Bible studies, and our annual Spirituality Conference – all led by a variety of clergy, parishioners, and distinguished guest presenters.

We celebrate these programs, and the extension of Cathedral hospitality, to people throughout the diocese and the region.

Our annual Homeless Requiem was the first held since the closing of the Peachtree-Pine shelter. Without that partnership, chairs Alexis Guilbert and Susan Cimbalo faced more responsibility and made it our best yet! The parish also pursues its work with Emmaus House, Church of the Common Ground, Arrendale Prison, and Buckhead Christian Ministry. We celebrate all this plus the fact that there is even more our parishioners do than is reflected here— some of which we may never know.

Cathedral parishioners and staff have made mission trips and pilgrimages this year to Haiti, Ghana, and England, among other places. Such trips create a special bond among travelers, weaving together our large community back home in more various and unexpected ways. We celebrate these trips and encourage plans for more!

In parish life, Lisa McNamara and staff continue to boost fellowship opportunities for children and families. Among other things, we celebrate the near-monthly family-friendly parish suppers, and an impromptu Hurricane Irma talent show. Lisa has also taken on oversight

of the Cathedral’s Mothers Morning Out program, now supervised by Tangi Cummings, a long-standing caregiver.

Maggie Paul, Clayton Harrington, and Meg Jones are offering innovative youth and young adult programming with Bible studies, festive gatherings, and trips.

Hispanic ministries are steadily joining the mainstream of Cathedral life; our LaAmistad tutoring program is thriving, and Jacky Baños, a faithful attender (along with her family) of the Spanish-language worship service, served as a summer intern, assisting with a wide variety of church administrative functions. She also served on the Parish Commission on Ministry discernment committee along with four other parishioners. Our retreat to Kanuga was once again fully booked and funfilled. As were our Epiphany parties and the fourth annual Chill on the Hill benefit concert.

We rely on the preaching, celebrating, teaching, and pastoral care provided by all our full and part-time clergy. Under the leadership of Canon for Pastoral Care and Worship Wallace Marsh, the Cathedral offers pastoral care to address

all life transitions—the celebratory and the sorrowful. This year has seen 55 funerals held at the Cathedral. Nearly twice the usual number! Among them was the funeral for one of our long-serving Cathedral deans, David Collins. People came from far and wide to celebrate his ministry, including Gay Clark Jennings, President of the House of Deputies. The Cathedral does funerals with grace, excellence, and hospitality, and we particularly celebrate the great work of our Funeral Guild.

We have also baptized 80 new Christians this year and performed 13 weddings, and, in April, Bishop Wimberly helped us confirm a class of over 60 people. Some notable changes this year: Our beloved Todd Smelser retired to Savannah and Canon Cathy Zappa has added oversight of youth programming to her responsibilities. Cathy was also integral, along with parishioner Randy Rizor, in getting the Haiti mission project off the ground. We celebrate all of this.

all while dealing with the less visible but voluminous administrative requirements of such a large parish. In addition, both have been widely called as guest preachers and teachers. Both are leaders in clergy support programs, diocesan projects, and governance of The Episcopal Church.

The dean was even invited into the halls of government, to participate in the installation of the new FBI Director! We celebrate their ambassadorial roles! We also stop here especially to celebrate Judy Johnson, executive assistant to the dean for 14 years. All of this would not have been possible without her work! Thank you, Judy!

The Cathedral campus—our energy center and staging area for mission, outreach, and pilgrimage—requires constant maintenance and improvement.

This year saw the installation of a new pipe organ—a generous gift—in Mikell Chapel, as well as (less exciting, but necessary) significant maintenance of the HVAC system, and the installation of a new sound system in the nave. A side note: this last was successful due largely to our resident sound genius, Brant McCaskill, whose skill is such that he was called to work for

ESPN in India for several weeks this year!

Because the Cathedral is an increasingly popular destination for a variety of events and groups, we now have a more centralized system for event planning and services. Trammell Williams has come on board to help coordinate this area of parish activity. Sandra Ortega has joined us to do an outstanding job of supervising housekeeping and sextons. Caroline Paris has come in to work on membership and welcoming newcomers. Dan Murphy shows our best face to the outside world through oversight of the Cathedral Times, website, podcasts, blogs, and social media platforms. Cathedral sermons, classes, essays, photos, videos, and calendar reach far beyond our walls.

Finally, this has been a momentous year for our parochial entities, some continuing strong and important work, and some beginning new and exciting chapters. Our ECW, as a body, refurbished the guest quarters in the Lanier House, developed its ministry at Arrendale Prison, and brought in a great program by Barbara Crafton. St. Ruth’s Guild, newly founded by Caroline Wallace and Dorsey DeLong in honor of Ruth Vaught, provides hospitality for parish events—notably for the large number of funerals we have seen this year—all in the generous and graceful spirit of its namesake. The Cathedral Counseling Center, under the steady direction of Christy Gituku, is building out its staff, and has brought excellent programs to Sunday mornings and Wednesday lunches.

The Cathedral Thrift House remains on course at its new location, keeping an eye on partnership opportunities within the parish community—working with Cathedral Farmers Market and the Cathedral Preschool. Friends of Cathedral Music has produced another impressive musical calendar, continuing its successful association with Atlanta Baroque Orchestra, and also bringing a lively holiday concert by the Atlanta Symphony Brass to the Cathedral. The Cathedral Book Store is living into its primary identity as a ministry, finding new ways to reach throughout the diocese as well as into our neighboring faith communities through book drives, pop-up sales, creative marketing initiatives, and continuing partnerships with the music department, Farmers Market, Spiritual Formation Committee, and Preschool.

The Cathedral Antiques Show instituted some changes to the structure and format of the 2017 show, resulting in a vibrant and successful week benefitting First Step Staffing. Our nationally-ranked Cathedral Farmers Market has grown in complexity and breadth of mission. The Wednesday evening market once again served as a community supper through all but the hottest weeks of summer. Having marked its tenth anniversary with a fabulous party, the Market looks ahead to another decade of excellence as it searches for a new director this winter. Cathedral Towers is also looking to a new chapter as it prepares to replace its retiring long-time and devoted director, Kathy Gottlieb. Finally, the Cathedral

Preschool, having reaffirmed its identity as part of the Cathedral community, begins its next exciting chapter. With the daily operation of this loving and nurturing school under the excellent interim direction of veteran educator and faithful parishioner Cheryl Mullins, the Preschool Board is addressing itself to a nationwide director search and a comprehensive strategic planning process. We celebrate the parochial entities’ deliberate integration with the larger Cathedral community, and shared vision of grace, excellence, and hospitality. We are grateful to the vicar for his tireless shepherding of these diverse entities, and to the many parish leaders— clergy and lay—who devote so much time and spirit—as board members, volunteers, employees, and patrons. We are many, but we are one!

From our vantage point, this parish is alive with spirit and action! You—our fellow faithful parishioners, our excellent staff, our inspiring clergy—give it that life! This goes as much for the many not mentioned by name. Your wardens celebrate that just as we cannot discern the edges of the world from atop the bell tower, we cannot discern the edges of this parish when we survey the people and programs that flow into, out of, and throughout this campus. It really is the greatest view in the world!

WORSHIP Worship is at the center of our religious life and sustains the work that we do in the world.

The word liturgy means “work of the people.” That is definitely the case here at the Cathedral as more than 700 members are involved in orchestrating the worship life of this community.

Every Sunday the Cathedral offers six services of worship, including a Holy Eucharist in Spanish. We also have special children’s worship during the program year.

The Eucharist is celebrated daily at 12:15 p.m. in St. Mary’s Chapel. The Friday 12:15 p.m. Eucharist includes prayers for healing. Morning and Evening Prayer are offered in Mikell Chapel periodically through the week. A monthly Taizé service is held on the third Monday at 8 p.m. in Mikell Chapel, celebrating the saints of the Church.

Holy Baptism is celebrated seven times a year on major feast days, and special services are offered during Advent, Lent, Holy Week, and Easter. On St. Francis’ Day we blessed all of our pets who joined us in church. On All Saints’ Sunday, we remembered those who have died this past year by offering a beautiful Choral Eucharist. On November 1, we hosted more than 400 guests for the 29th Annual Homeless Requiem, commemorating those who died on the streets of Atlanta during the past year. Finally, as the Cathedral church for the Diocese of Atlanta, we also hosted two confirmation services, ordinations to the diaconate and priesthood, and other special diocesan services.

PASTORAL CARE The Cathedral offers the values of Philip the Deacon—grace, excellence, and hospitality—in the midst of difficulty and transition. Philip had the grace to baptize the eunuch. He had the excellence to explain the gospel. Philip had the hospitality to join the Ethiopian eunuch; he got up into the chariot with him (Acts 8:26–40).

After Philip baptizes the Ethiopian eunuch, scripture says he is “snatched up” and disappears. This serves as a reminder that our mission is to offer pastoral care during transitions. The pastoral care department does not have the experience, personnel, or resources to provide longterm care, case management, or financial assistance. However, we do have the ability to connect you with agencies whose mission is to provide such care.

GRACE We believe that pastoral care is rooted in the grace of Christ, so we draw upon the sacraments and sacramental rites in the Book of Common Prayer.

EXCELLENCE We will offer excellent care and guidance through counseling sessions, classes, programs, pastoral visits, workshops, and worship.

HOSPITALITY Clergy, counselors, staff, and volunteers will be present with you during life’s difficulties and transitions.

We are blessed with a great pastoral care department. Jeannie Mahood took on more responsibility in this area, and then became executive assistant to the dean.

However, we are blessed to have Janie Harris come on as program coordinator for pastoral care. Janie already is in touch with many in our parish community through her work with stewardship. Now, she will be working more closely to serve the needs of our community.

Canon Carolynne Williams and Deacon Juan Sandoval continue their ministry by making pastoral visits during the week.

This programmatic year we are working closely with the Cathedral Counseling Center by offering a variety of classes and workshops.

I hope that you will participate in our pastoral offerings and experience the grace, excellence, and hospitality of the Cathedral.

ELDER MINISTRY There are hundreds of parishioners and associates who are seasoned in living.

Over 700 parishioners are 72 years of age and older. More than 100 are couples where both partners are age 72 or older.

Almost 70 members will reach or have reached age 72 by the calendar end of this year.

CONGREGATIONAL LIFE AND MEMBERSHIP CONGREGATIONAL LIFE The Cathedral of St. Philip is among the largest parishes in the Episcopal Church.

It is a dynamic parish because of the many different parish life groups. These small groups are too many to name in this report, but each plays an important role in the life of the parish. I want to thank all those who serve as leaders in one of these groups. Your leadership is one of the reasons this is such an amazing parish.

I also want to thank Janie Harris for her work as program coordinator for membership. Janie joined the staff in June 2016, and immediately offered wonderful ideas. She is now the program coordinator for pastoral care.

This November, we welcomed Caroline Paris (from the Cathedral Counseling Center) to our staff on a part-time basis to help with newcomers. Caroline is charged with being present on Sunday morning (at the doors of the Atrium) to welcome guests and newcomers. She will also

coordinate our newcomers’ events. These have been very successful.

I am thankful for the work of Caroline, Janie, and our newcomers committee.

MEMBERSHIP While we hear references of church decline, the Cathedral membership continued to grow in the past year with an average of 18 new members joining the parish each month. The chart below reflects changes in the number of members and associates of the Cathedral during the past twelve months. A member is someone who is baptized and has formalized membership at the Cathedral. An associate is someone who has not formalized their membership but is involved in the life of the Cathedral parish.

HISPANIC MINISTRIES The Hispanic ministry has been consistent over the past year. The Sunday services are held at 11:15 a.m. with Deacon Juan Sandoval and one of three presbyters: the Rev. Dr. Bill Harkins, Canon Wallace Marsh, and Canon Cathy Zappa. The Hispanic community has grown with a consistent group of families who attend service regularly.

During the past year we have had 17 baptisms, four confirmations, two presentations of a 40-day-old, one presentation of a 3 year old, 10 informed communions, one Holy Matrimony, and one quinciĂąera. Additionally, this past summer, five children, rising sixth and seventh graders, attended summer camp at Camp Mikell. Several of the families have participated in the blessing of the backpacks and blessing of the costumes.

We will celebrate the Feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe on December 10 during the usual Sunday Eucharist. Followed by a small celebration in the Gould Room.

Many of the members of our Hispanic

ministry also participated with the annual Taste of Latin America. This is a festive occasion in which members from the 12 Hispanic churches bring typical food from their country and share with the community. It is held in Child Hall and the purpose of this is to establish community and raise money to send to a needy country or charity. We hope more parishioners of all the churches from the Diocese of Atlanta will come and join us in 2018 for this event.

We will continue to serve the community with baptisms, quinciĂąeras, weddings, presentations, confirmation classes, and adult education. All are welcome to attend these Spanish-language services.

MUSIC Thanks to the hard work of the music staff and approximately 120 volunteers (singers and board members), the music ministry of the Cathedral has flourished in 2017.

We have continued to be blessed week by week with the service-playing genius of Associate Organist-Choirmaster David Fishburn, the improvisational abilities of Assistant Organist-Choirmaster Patrick Scott, and the organizational care of Coordinator for Music Tim Gunter. I am personally grateful to them for so ably overseeing the Cathedral’s music ministry during the first two months of the fall 2017 choir season, as I concluded what was, for me, a stimulating and wonderfully refreshing sabbatical.

Our music ministry would also not be possible without the hard work and extraordinary dedication of the singers in our Cathedral Choir, Cathedral Schola, and Chorister program, more than 80 percent of whom are volunteers. It would also be impossible without the remarkable efforts of our Friends of Cathedral Music, which continues to enrich the spiritual and musical landscape of the entire region.

Among the most exciting events of 2017 was the installation of the Thomas Ruben Jones Memorial Organ in Mikell Chapel in September. Although Mikell Chapel is the oldest permanent building on the current site of the Cathedral, it has never been blessed with a pipe organ.

This new organ is an absolute masterpiece of its kind. Properly cared for, it is no exaggeration to say that this gift by Lowell Jacks—and the world-class craftsmanship of Schoenstein & Co. Pipe Organs of San Francisco—will enrich the worship life of Mikell Chapel not merely for generations, but for centuries to come. We are grateful for Chapel organists Nancy Dickson, Leslie Boyette, and Karen Bunn, who continue so ably to serve the 9:00 and 11:15 a.m. Mikell Chapel congregations.

The Cathedral Choirs continually strive to sing to their utmost capabilities for excellence in the 160 worship services and concerts they participate in annually. In August the Cathedral Choir undertook a pilgrimage to England to sing as choirin-residence for a week each at Salisbury and Durham cathedrals. Seventeen days and fifteen choral services later, the Choir returned home with a broadened sense of living in Christian community, deepened friendships, an enriched understanding of and appreciation for our spiritual and worship heritage as Episcopalians, and an enhanced sense of musical ensemble from which everyone who worships in the Cathedral nave continues to benefit every Sunday. The Cathedral Choir presented a memorable pilgrimage benefit concert in February, to raise funds and to give folks at home a preview of a portion of the repertoire they were working to master in order to fulfill their liturgical duties in England.

It is worth noting that attendance at our 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon choral services (most often Evensong with Eucharist) has continued to grow during the autumn of 2017. Many people are making this their Sunday service for the

day; others are availing themselves of the opportunity to worship when the details of their lives prevent them from attending Sunday morning; and other members of the 4 p.m. congregation are part of that broad cross-section of the wider community who attend, some regularly and others occasionally, because we offer a unique opportunity for worship that is of a character, and in a sacred space, that is unlike what they can experience elsewhere in the region. The reality that the Cathedral’s Aeolian-Skinner organ and the gracious acoustic of our nave are considered national treasures continues to be given ample evidence insofar as two-thirds of our 3:15 p.m. Sunday recitalists travel here from out-of-state to enjoy the privilege of performing on such an instrument in such a place.

The Allegro program, under the leadership of Brenda Pruitt, continues to provide an opportunity for our youngest children

to learn to love music and, eventually, to begin to serve within the context of liturgy, singing the Song of Praise periodically at the 8:45 a.m. Eucharist. Importantly, this program also feeds young singers into the Cathedral Chorister program, which continues to work toward its significant potential under the direction of Dr. Scott.

The Friends of Cathedral Music season was filled with remarkable events during 2017. Continuing its relationship with the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra as artistsin-residence, a truly extraordinary French Concert Spirituel was presented in March, in collaboration with the Cathedral Schola.

In May the Cathedral Choir participated in an unforgettable and thrilling performance of the Resurrection Symphony by Gustav Mahler, played by the internationally renowned organist David Briggs in his own transcription. In June one of the deans of American Episcopal Church music, David Hurd, was our recitalist for the Atlanta

Summer Organ Festival, who treated us to a program that included many of his own compositions. Fall 2017 saw the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra’s twentieth anniversary concert, and an exciting collaboration with the newly formed Atlanta Symphony Brass, who offered a thrilling concert of symphonic and holiday classics that everyone—on all sides of the music stands—hopes will become an annual holiday tradition.

As I have often pointed out, the duty and privilege of offering our best to God is a task of working toward a constantly moving target. I look forward to continuing to partner with the Cathedral staff, our wonderful volunteers, and the many singers whose devotion to music ministry here is so evident, soli Deo gloria!

SPIRITUALITY The Cathedral of St. Philip strives to be “a house of prayer for all people.” We pray through worship, Bible studies, educational series, and our life and ministry together. With the support of our Spiritual Formation and Nurture Committee, we are able to offer many other opportunities to enrich your spiritual journey and prayer practice. Some highlights from this past year include:

Our 2018 retreat will be at Kanuga Conference Center, from March 2-4, 2018. We are excited to have the Rev. Beth Knowlton, from St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in San Antonio (and a beloved former Cathedral canon), as our retreat facilitator.

SPIRITUALITY CONFERENCE

Jeannie Mahood is not only our program coordinator for spirituality, she is also an art therapist, who has been encouraging us to explore the intersection of creativity and spirituality. In just a few days, on December 13, she’ll be leading a Lunch and Learn on Zentangle, a beautiful, meditative, and easy-to learn form of art. This winter, she led a spirituality and creativity book group, which read Elizabeth Gilbert’s book, Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear, while trying their hand at various forms of art.

We also have a faithful centering prayer group that meets Thursday evenings, from 6:30–7:30 p.m. Both veterans and newcomers are welcome.

In October, we hosted over 250 people for our ninth annual Spirituality Conference.

Our speaker this year was Barbara Brown Taylor, writer, preacher, and Episcopal priest. In her talk, titled “Holy Envy: Learning to Live with Religious Difference,” she explored some of the very timely themes from her upcoming book.

She joined us again the following Sunday to lead the Dean’s Forum.

We look forward to hosting Becca Stevens for our next Spirituality Conference, on October 28, 2018. Becca is an author, speaker, priest, social entrepreneur, and founder and president of Thistle Farms.

QUIET DAYS AND RETREATS During Advent and Lent, the Cathedral offers quiet days, intended to provide people with space for prayer, contemplation, and quiet. Writer Carl McColman led our 2017 Lenten Quiet Day on the teachings of Julian of Norwich, and spiritual director Lisa Persons led our Advent Quiet Day on “Preparing our Hearts” to welcome Christ.

In Lent 2017, women of the parish gathered at Mikell Conference Center for a weekend of fellowship and renewal.

CONTEMPLATIVE PRACTICES In addition to centering prayer, we have a Taizé service every third Monday at 8 p.m. in Mikell Chapel, which is open to everyone. Taizé is a contemplative form of prayer and worship, introduced from a monastic community in France, that combines light, simple chants, and silence.

Prayers for reconciliation are an important part of the service.

Before the monthly Taizé service, we have a facilitated labyrinth walk, as well as an orientation to the labyrinth. In addition,

we offer special labyrinth walks during Advent, Lent, and Holy Week, as well as on other occasions.

Our indoor labyrinth is available for prayer and meditation on Mondays and Fridays from 3–8 p.m., and our outdoor labyrinth is always available.

We also have a high quality, portable labyrinth, which we loan out to other organizations, like schools and churches.

This year, we also took it to Covenant House, to share it with teens experiencing homelessness.

We are blessed to have a core group of Veriditas trained volunteer labyrinth facilitators who tend this ministry, and also provide outreach to groups requesting presentations and labyrinth walks.

SPIRITUAL FORMATION AND NURTURE COMMITTEE The Spiritual Formation and Nurture Committee meets regularly and provides important direction and support around our spirituality offerings. The committee works closely with Jeannie Mahood, program coordinator for spirituality, and Cathy Zappa, canon for spirituality and mission.

EDUCATION Christianity is more a way of life than it is a set of rules. Therefore, education in a Christian community is the practice of teaching and learning how to be Christian rather than what Christians believe. There are, of course, certain things that we need to know in order to fully live out our calling as followers of Christ.

Our Christian education classes address these “need to know” items, including the language of the Christian people, but always in the context of who we are.

Narrative is essential to the formation of children and youth. Our youngest children focus much of their time on hearing and responding to the stories of God’s people. As children grow and mature, the emphasis shifts from internalization of the Christian narrative to more explicitly placing ourselves within that narrative and exploring its implications for our lives. The story of God’s work in the world continues into our community today, so we spend time not only listening and responding to the ancient stories but working together in the world to live out our call as Christians.

Our adult classes are designed to continue the practice of thinking theologically in a variety of contexts, to provide an interpretative framework for people who want to live faithful lives.

We invite people of all ages into the practice of learning through creative, developmentally appropriate methods of teaching and community building.

CHILDREN Godly Play continues to inform all that we do with children. I attended the Godly Play National Conference in June with two of our Godly Play instructors, Noel Huebner and Liz Aull. We renewed our membership with the National Godly Play Foundation, giving us access to special webinars, curriculum updates, and continuing education programs. In 2018 we will host a commuter training at the end of the summer. Our seven mixedaged classrooms are home to spiritual formation for children ages two and a half through fifth grade on Sunday mornings, and twice-weekly meetings after school with the participants in LaAmistad, the after school tutoring program for Hispanic children from Garden Hills Elementary School.

We offer Children’s Chapel to children who are ages three through third grade.

We break into two different groups based on age. We enjoy music and an ageappropriate child’s version of our church’s liturgy. Our wonderful team of chapel and music leaders are led by the amazing Sara Chapman. We owe a huge amount of gratitude to them and our talented Godly Play teachers.

We also welcomed children and their families to special liturgies and events outside of the regular Sunday morning routine. Some highlighted events are: Shrove Tuesday pancake supper, Ash Wednesday and Maundy Thursday family services, Week of Wonder, book bag blessing, Halloween costume blessing, LaAmistad costume blessing and fall festival, Advent wreath making, dinner

with St. Nicholas, holiday cookie baking, Christmas party for LaAmistad volunteers, and a new “Noon Year’s Eve” party after services on Sunday, December 31. Baptism workshops and adult Godly Play circles gave parents the opportunity to explore the stories that their children are learning.

YOUTH We have a wide range of youth programs, from Sunday School to EYC to ski trips and more, that help our youth grow in faith, ministry, and community. This summer, we went on a mission pilgrimage to Haiti with 21 pilgrims of various ages. The trip provided many learning experiences as well as God moments, and we look forward to continuing this partnership with Eternal Hope in Haiti, specifically next summer during our trip June 18-24.

Cathedral youth remain active leaders in the church and in their communities, through acolyting, service, diocesan opportunities, and support of one another.

This year, our Youth Leadership Team has taken on new life, as five juniors and seniors help plan big events and serve as peer mentors for our eighth grade confirmands.

With these leaders and many others, our participation in diocesan youth events, especially Happening, has been on the rise.

With the help of adult leaders, our Sunday School classes have also taken on a new form. Our middle school curriculum, “Welcome to the Bible: We’ve Got Fun and Games,” is focusing on building a strong foundation in biblical narratives.

In anticipation of Confirmation, eighth graders will turn this spring to how these narratives are continued in the Episcopal tradition. In our high school class, “Finding Ourselves in the Stories of Faith,” older students are invited to wade through tough questions of identity, faith, and ethics, with some popular and not-so-popular biblical characters.

Finally, we offered a Parenting Youth Series this fall, designed to support the

most important ministers in our youths’ lives—their parents and families.

The youth ministry team supports students throughout the week with breakfast and lunch meetings, sporting events attendance, and simply being available as a relatable adult when life’s challenges arise.

ADULT EDUCATION Clergy and parishioners work together to create a variety of excellent, engaging educational offerings for adults, which allow us to grow in community; engage theologically the questions of our time; and reflect together on our faith, scripture, and tradition. On Sunday mornings, we have both ongoing classes (like Old Fashioned Sunday School, Living Faith, Greek classes, and small-group Bible and book studies) and special series that meet for just a few weeks. Sunday morning highlights from this past year include a summer series led

by Canon George Maxwell on “A Little History of Religion;” this fall’s highly acclaimed OFSS series on C.S. Lewis; and guest speakers like Kelly Carlisle, Barbara Brown Taylor, and the Right Reverend Dr. Victor Atta-Baffoe of the Anglican Diocese of Cape Coast. Another highlight was a presentation by youth and adults about our mission-pilgrimage to Haiti.

During Lent, Canon Cathy Zappa led a Sunday evening series on “Reimagining Charity and Service,” with Shawn Duncan from Focused Community Strategies as a guest speaker. The book groups BBC and Hart Readers continue to go strong, while Jeannie Mahood offered a new book group on spirituality and creativity.

The Cathedral also provides on-theground formation for future church leaders, through its youth ministry internship program and through its partnership with Candler School of Theology, which uses our church as a site placement for seminarians. Currently, we are happy to have Meg Jones, youth ministry intern, and Nicole Lambelet, Candler seminarian, on our Christian education team. Our former seminarian, Clayton Harrington, has also joined the team, as program coordinator for children and youth.

OUTREACH “GO IN PEACE, TO LOVE AND SERVE THE LORD!” Our Cathedral outreach programs seek to be a sign of Christ’s love, mercy, and justice in this world, while nurturing spiritual growth and community among those who participate in them. Most of our specific programs cluster around four areas: homelessness, at-risk children, Hispanic ministries, and prison ministries.

As a Cathedral, we also reach out through our hospitality as a “house of prayer for all people,” our parochial entities, volunteer and financial support of partner ministries, and, most important, the many ways that Cathedral parishioners respond to Jesus’ commission throughout their lives.

Our outreach ministries are supported, first and foremost, by generous and faithful pledges. Other significant sources of support include loose offerings, special donations, the Ricks Wheeler fund (for organizations helping people living with HIV/AIDS), and funds raised by parochial entities. This parish’s commitment to mission is evident in the $813,000 that we distributed in 2016 in support of outreach activities “off the hill.”

While financial expenditures are an important component of our ministry, they do not begin to capture the many hours of volunteer time and in-kind contributions received throughout the year.

Some highlights from 2017 include:

TRANSITION OF PEACHTREE-PINE SHELTER Our long-time partner in homeless ministry, the Metro Atlanta Task Force for the Homeless and its shelter at Peachtree and Pine, closed this year.

For over twenty years, a faithful group of Cathedral parishioners has been delivering a hot meal there every first Sunday of the month; and for the past twenty-eight years, we have worked with them on our annual Homeless Requiem.

We are thankful for this long partnership and for their ministry in this city. To help with the transition, we collected backpacks and other supplies for people who will be moved to other shelters or housing options.

HOMELESS REQUIEM AND DINNER We hosted over 25 service providers and 500 individuals experiencing homelessness for a special evening of remembrance, worship, and hospitality at the 29th Homeless Requiem and Dinner on All Saints’ Day. Our preacher was the Reverend Tony Johns, executive director of Crossroads; and the Cathedral Choir and the Voices of Hope Choir from Arrendale Prison offered their gifts of music. With the help of a grant from the Episcopal Communities Foundation, we

were able to provide transportation for our homeless guests. We had several other great partners, including Church of the Common Ground, Mercy Care, and First Step Staffing (2017 Cathedral Antiques Show beneficiary). A big thank you to the Homeless Requiem Committee and its co-chairs, Susan Cimbalo and Alexis Guilbert, and to all of our volunteers and donors!

MISSION-PILGRIMAGE TO HAITI Twenty-one pilgrims from the Cathedral traveled to Cap-Haitien in June, to learn from and work alongside Eternal Hope in Haiti, a Georgia-based non-profit that provides health care to people in need and operates an orphanage for medically fragile and/or critically ill children on our first mission-pilgrimage to Haiti. Our 2018 trip is scheduled for June 24 – 30.

GROWING PRISON MINISTRY The Cathedral continues to sponsor a weekly Eucharist service and a Christmas Eve service at Arrendale State Prison.

In addition, under the leadership of the ECW, we have supported the Arrendale Children’s Center by supporting five visitation days and donating an oven. Our Prison Ministry Committee is hard at work developing a support ministry for people leaving prison.

NEW EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES Canon Cathy Zappa led a Lenten series on “Reimagining Charity and Service,” in which we considered helpful and harmful approaches to helping those who are most vulnerable. Other opportunities to learn about social-justice issues included a showing of the film 13th, a Hart Readers discussion of Bryan Stevenson’s book Just Mercy, a Healing Communities training about caring for people affected by crime and incarceration, and an “Immigration Day” forum.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY Under the leadership of John Champion and others, Cathedral members have worked with other churches to build twenty-nine homes for families who would not otherwise be able to dream of home ownership. Our thirtieth build will begin in early March, with a kick-off dinner in late February. Our 2017 Habitat build was dedicated to Cathedral member and dedicated Habitat volunteer, Will Klein.

STEWARDSHIP ANNUAL FUND Cloud of Witnesses was the theme for the 2017 Stewardship Campaign. Responding to the call in Hebrews 12:1-2 that we are surrounded by a great Cloud of Witnesses, we sought to “run with perseverance the race that is set before us.”

The campaign sought to recall our connectedness to generations of parishioners that built this community with the modern-day technology that binds the parish today. From weekly services to podcasts and from the Farmer’s Market to Facebook Live events, we sought to show the breadth and connection of our community.

ENDOWMENT FUND The Endowment Fund serves a crucial purpose by providing for the care and repair of large capital systems that are vital to the operation of the Cathedral. In addition to supporting capital expenditures like repairing and replacing roofs, the Cathedral Endowment Fund supports the music program, covers the cost of maintaining the stained glass windows and provides substantial financial support to numerous Atlanta social service organizations focused on HIV/AIDS. The fund had a market value of $14,474,777 as of October 31, 2017 compared to $12,592,880 as of October 31, 2016. By the end of October, the Cathedral had received $707,454 from estate bequests and contributions from parishioners. Funds available for distribution are based on a percentage of the value of the fund over the trailing twelve quarters. As of the end of October, $523,047 has been distributed to the Cathedral for projects including music for the Lanier House improvements; outdoor lighting improvements; waterproofing; Cathedral choirs; computers, media and telephone technology; grants to HIV/AIDS related ministries; HVAC upgrades; and landscaping improvements.

The trustees of the Endowment Fund continue to add members to the Cathedral Arbor Society, which now counts 194 members on the rolls.

The chairman of the Endowment Board of Trustees is Ann Burns. Susan Graham, Steve Merz, Ray Hill, and Alan McClure serve as trustees. The dean, Senior Warden Mary Caroline Cravens, and Junior Warden Doug O’Bryan serve as trustees by virtue of their office. Scott Rhodes has been elected to replace outgoing board member Ray Hill.

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN AND GIFTS The Cathedral community made additional significant investments in the Cathedral complex over the past year.

In particular, the Thomas Ruben Jones Memorial Organ was installed in Mikell Chapel in September. The organ was generously provided by Delbert Lowell Jacks in memory of Ruben. Schoenstein & Co. built the organ of two-manuals, 14-voices, 16-ranks. It has been a wonderful addition to congregations of Mikell Chapel.

In addition, the renovation of the hardscaping and landscaping in front of the church continued thanks to the contributions of several families. This multi-year improvement will repair and replace deteriorated hardscaping, improve campus accessibility, and include planting hundreds of shrubs, trees, and groundcover.

IN GRATITUDE Ray Hill was senior warden and an exofficio member of the Endowment Board when I joined the Cathedral staff in 2006.

He was subsequently elected to three terms as a trustee and served as chair for much of his tenure. I will sorely miss our regular interactions when his term ends at the end of this year. Ray brought a sharp and analytical mind complimented by a gift of clean and simple explanations and language. He leaves the Cathedral Endowment better than he found it.

CHAPTER The Chapter is the governing body of the Cathedral that determines policy issues, sets goals, and provides stewardship of the Cathedral’s complex operations. The Chapter reviews the activities of each of the Cathedral’s parochial entities and ministries on an annual basis, and reviews the church’s financials on a monthly basis.

Unlike the vestries of smaller parishes, the Chapter does not usually get involved in the day-to-day activities of the Cathedral; instead, the Chapter of the Cathedral functions similarly to a board of trustees.

Each year, a nominating committee identifies a slate of six candidates for the Chapter. Members are elected at the annual parish meeting in December for a three-year term.
