Candler, Preacher The 8:45 a.m. service in the Cathedral gathers the largest and most diverse age groups of the parish. We rejoice and laugh with smaller children who are a large presence here; so the sermons, prayers, and hymns are intentionally developed to have a wide and educational appeal. This service maintains the grandeur and grace of the Anglican tradition, but our faith is presented in a creative and wide style. Should one be meeting the Episcopal Church from another tradition, this is our most accessible service.

The 11:15 a.m. Eucharist presents the splendor of the Christian faith in its most glorious Anglican fashion. Our music, our prayers, and our sermons use the finest sources our spiritual history can offer. Incense is used on feast days. Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

A Reading from The Acts of the Apostles.

An angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Get up and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” (This is a wilderness road.) So he got up and went. Now there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of the Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of her entire treasury. He had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning home; seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isaiah.

Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over to this chariot and join it.” So Philip ran up to it and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah. He asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” He replied, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to get in and sit beside him. Now the passage of the scripture that he was reading was this: “Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter, and like a lamb silent before its shearer, so he does not open his mouth.

In his humiliation justice was denied him.

Who can describe his generation?

For his life is taken away from the earth.”

The eunuch asked Philip, “About whom, may I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?” Then Philip began to speak, and starting with this scripture, he proclaimed to him the good news about Jesus. As they were going along the road, they came to some water; and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water! What is to prevent me from being baptized?” He commanded the chariot to stop, and both of them, Philip and the eunuch, went down into the water, and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he was passing through the region, he proclaimed the good news to all the towns until he came to Caesarea.

The celebrant asks two sets of three questions.

The first set asks the candidates to renounce evil; the second to promise adherence to Christ.

The Baptismal Covenant is renewed by all the baptized Christians who are present. They join with those being baptized in reciting the Apostles’ Creed and in responding to the Covenant’s other questions.

We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life.

We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

At the following words, the Celebrant touches the water

Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior.

The Baptism

The Congregation may be seated for the baptisms. The Candidates are presented by name to the Priest who pours water upon each Candidate, saying

Then the Celebrant, using chrism, places a hand on the person’s head, marking on the forehead the sign of the cross and saying

N., you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ’s own for ever. Amen.

The principal prayer of the baptismal liturgy is the Thanksgiving over the Water.

The structure is deliberately parallel to that of the Great Thanksgiving at the Eucharist.

The Thanksgiving over the Water is also placed at the focal point of the baptismal liturgy, between the entrance into the Baptismal Covenant and the sacramental washing.

The verbal welcome is accompanied by the ritual action of the exchange of the peace.

As members of the Church, the newly baptized take their places as participants in the Eucharistic assembly.

The Celebrant introduces the newly baptized, and then says

Let us welcome the newly baptized.

We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ

crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood.

The Holy Eucharist is the sacrament commanded

by Christ for the continual remembrance of his life, death, and resurrection, until his coming again.

(BCP, p. 859) It is this opening thanksgiving, or eucharistia, which gives its name to the Great Thanksgiving.

The Eucharist is not simply the action of the particular congregation, which happens to be assembled in a particular place, but of the whole Church, even the whole creation, which joins with the congregation in singing the heavenly hymn of Isaiah 6 and Revelation 4.

The Greek word for “remembrance” (anamnesis) carries the full weight of the biblical concept.

Through anamnesis we become participants in the events, not as history, but as present realities in our lives.

The epiclesis, or the invitation to the Holy Spirit, is invoked both upon us and upon the Eucharistic gifts.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, The Lord’s Prayer

Christians have seen in the breaking of the bread a symbol of the breaking of the Lord’s body on the cross.

The Communion

All are welcome to receive the consecrated bread and wine of the Eucharist. You may receive at the altar or at floor-level stations. Stand or kneel and receive the bread (a wafer) in the palm of your hand. Gluten-free wafers are available upon request at the Peachtree (left) altar rail. Receive the wine either by drinking from the cup (guiding it to your lips) or by touching the wafer lightly to the wine. Younger children may stand for easier access to the cup. If you desire to receive a blessing, cross your arms across your chest.

11:15 a.m. only: Prayers for healing are available in St. Luke’s Chapel. The chapel is located in the South (Andrews) transept. All are welcome.

The dismissal asserts the relationship between liturgy and Christian living: it is a call to live the baptismal and Eucharistic life in the world.

Cathedral newcomers are invited to enjoy a casual social gathering, complete with ice cream and beer. Join us for Pints on the Point at 5 p.m. this evening!

CHILDREN Children of all ages are welcome and encouraged to participate fully in our liturgy. For parents who prefer it, The Nurturing Center is open for children three and younger from 8:30 a.m. through the end of the 11:15 a.m. service each week.

Children’s chapel takes place during the 8:45 a.m. service as an option for parents and children who are not yet ready to experience the full liturgy together, though children are always welcome in “big” church. Children four years (by September 1, 2019) through fifth grade begin in the nave, then follow the children’s acolytes and leaders out at the sequence hymn. Children will return to the nave at the Offertory. Two and three-year-olds attend their own chapel service, which begins at 8:45 a.m. Parents who would like their children three-years-old and younger to join them for communion may go pick them up from Room 227 at the Peace.

All Godly Play classes are mixed-age groupings. If you have not registered for Sunday School, your child will be placed in an appropriate class when you arrive on the Children’s wing this morning. The doors to Godly Play will open at 10:10 am.

YOUTH All youth (grades 6th-12th) are invited to participate in Sunday School at 10:10 a.m. during the school year. Meet in Room 368 for cinnamon rolls and fellowship, before we break into our middle-school and high-school classes.

Middle School Sunday School: Welcome to the Bible—Room 382 Join us for Middle School Sunday School! This year we will be asking questions like: Why should we bother with a book that’s 2000 years old? What does the Bible have to do with me? Is it okay to be uncomfortable with some Bible passages? We will explore these questions, and many others, by playing with clay, sinking model ships, competing in games, and much more!

High School Sunday School: Becoming Beloved Community—Room 368 At each baptism in the Episcopal church, several questions are asked of those wanting to begin a new life in the community of Christ. While some of these questions are about belief, others detail practices which sustain us in the work of “seeking and serving Christ in all persons.” In preparation for our pilgrimage to the Legacy Museum on October 19, the High School Sunday School Class will explore how Christians in this region of the US have both succeeded and failed in their practices to “honor the dignity of every human being.” Join us for conversations about how our faith calls us to engage the legacy of our shared history. We’re excited to welcome you! Please note: Students need not attend the pilgrimage to participate in Sunday classes. The themes and ideas that will be presented in class are applicable to everyday life and all youth are encouraged to attend.

Old Fashioned Sunday School: Contemplating Christ: How to Become a Mystic Without Really Trying!—Child Hall What will the church of the future will look like? The Jesuit theologian Karl Rahner famously said, “The Christian of the future will be a mystic or he will not exist at all.” Rahner was convinced that the secularization of life that began after the end of the Second World War would pull people away from the church. He feared that, if people did not have a deep experience of God, they would not commit themselves to a sustained life of faith. This term, we are looking at what it means to be a mystic (it’s not as extraordinary as you might think!) and how the recovery of the contemplative tradition in the church might change how we go about being church. This week, we will look at the Prologue of John and the stories of Jesus’ birth in Matthew and Luke to see what they tell us about the presence of Christ in our own lives today. As always, you will find a light heart, a broad welcome, and good coffee. We look forward to seeing you!

Living Faith—Room 120 Join Canon Lauren Holder and Canon Cathy Zappa as we explore what it means to live out our faith through conversation with scripture and tradition, contemporary books, and, most important, one another.
