La Epístola
1 John 4:7-21
1 San Juan 4:7–21
Todos se sientan. Lector Lectura de la Primera Carta de San Juan.
A Reading from The First Letter of John.
Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us.
By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and do testify that the Father has sent his Son as the Savior of the world. God abides in those who confess that Jesus is the Son of God, and they abide in God. So we have known and believe the love that God has for us.
God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them. Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness on the day of judgment, because as he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love. We love because he first loved us. Those who say, “I love God,” and hate their brothers or sisters, are liars; for those who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen. The commandment we have from him is this: those who love God must love their brothers and sisters also.

San Juan 15:1-8
Evangelio de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo según San Juan. ¡Gloria a ti, Cristo Señor!
Jesus said, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinegrower. He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.”

infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.
He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Por tanto, proclamamos el misterio de fe:
All
Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
Todos
Cristo ha muerto. Cristo ha resucitado. Cristo volverá.
Celebrante Padre, en este sacrificio de alabanza
Celebrant We celebrate the memorial of our
redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.
Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.
All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.
Amen.

Oremos como nuestro Salvador Cristo nos enseñó.
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Communion
Santa Comunión
All are welcome to receive the consecrated bread and wine of the Eucharist. You may receive at the altar or at floor-level stations. Stand or kneel and receive the bread (a wafer) in the palm of your hand. Gluten-free wafers are available upon request at the Peachtree (left) altar rail. Receive the wine either by drinking from the cup (guiding it to your lips) or by touching the wafer lightly to the wine. Younger children are invited to stand for easier access to the cup. If you desire to receive a blessing, cross your arms across your chest.
During the ministration of Holy Communion, prayers for healing and the laying on of hands are offered in St. Luke’s Chapel. The chapel is located in the South (Andrews) transept. All are welcome.

music: David Hurd (b. 1950), Love Bade Me Welcome words: George Herbert (1593-1633)
Love bade me welcome; yet my soul drew back, Guiltie of dust and sinne. But quick-eyed Love, observing me grow slack From my first entrance in, Drew nearer to me, sweetly questioning, If I lacked anything.
“A guest,” I answered, “worthy to be here”: Love said, “You shall be he.” “I the unkinde, ungratefull? Ah, my deare, I cannot look on thee.” Love took my hand, and smiling did reply, “Who made the eyes but I?”
Ah, mi querida, No puedo mirarte “.
“Truth, Lord, but I have marred them: let my shame Go where it doth deserve.” “And know you not,” sayes Love, “who bore the blame?” “My deare, then I will serve.” “You must sit down,” sayes Love, “and taste my meat”: So I did sit and eat.

April 29, 2018 WELCOME For the latest news and happenings from the Cathedral, visit out website at stphilipscathedral.org. Also, see the information in print in our weekly newsletter, Cathedral Times, available in the narthex, in the hallway outside Child Hall, and in the Atrium.
CHILDREN Children of all ages are welcome and encouraged to participate fully in our liturgy. For parents who prefer it, The Nurturing Center is open for children three and younger from 8:30 a.m. through the end of the 11:15 a.m. service each week. Children’s chapel takes place during the 8:45 a.m. service as an option for parents and children who are not yet ready to experience the full liturgy together, though children are always welcome in “big” church. Children three years (by September 1, 2017) through third grade begin in church with their parents, then follow the children’s acolytes and leaders out at the sequence hymn. Children will rejoin their parents at the Offertory. Two-year-olds attend their own chapel service, which begins at 8:45 a.m. Parents who would like their children two-years-old and younger to join them for communion may go pick them up from Room 227 at the Peace. All Godly Play classes are mixed-age groupings. If you have not registered for Sunday School, your child will be placed in an appropriate class when you arrive on the Children’s wing this morning. Children’s Sunday School classes will meet immediately after the 8:45 a.m. service. The Holy Eucharist Instruction Class is open to children in first grade (and older) and their families. Using Godly Play stories, we will reflect on the Eucharist and what it means in our own lives. We ask a parent, Godparent or Grandparent attend the class with their child. The class will be held during the Sunday School hour (10:10-11:00 a.m.) from April 8 thru May 13. There will be a celebration for participants on May 13 during the 8:45 a.m. service. Attendance at all four classes is encouraged, but not mandatory for participation. All are welcome!

YOUTH Welcome to the Bible: We’ve got Fun and Games—Room 382 Join us for Middle School Sunday School! This spring we will continue our journey through the Bible by asking questions like: Why should we bother with a book that’s 2000 years old? What does the Bible have to do with me? Is it okay to be uncomfortable with some Bible passages? Where do I see myself in this story? We will explore these questions, and many others, by modelling with clay, competing in exciting challenges, playing fun games, and much more! Finding Ourselves in the Stories of Faith—Room 368 Who is Jesus? Why is he important? The question of Jesus’ identity is central to our own identity as Christians, our public faith, and our ethical orientation in the world. If Jesus was here today, what might he say about the task of pursuing faith and justice in our society? Though we can’t promise you we have all the answers, join the High School Sunday School community for some lively conversation, plus donuts! All of the Youth Confirmands and their families are invited to a reception in Child Hall before the Confirmation service at 11:15 a.m. For additional information about our Youth Program, please contact, Maggie Paul (mpaul@stphilipscathedral.org, 404-365-1080).
ADULT EDUCATION All classes meet at 10:10 a.m. unless otherwise noted.
Living Faith—Room 120 Join Canon Wallace Marsh and Canon Cathy Zappa as we explore what it means to live out our faith through conversation with scripture and tradition, contemporary books, and, most important, one another. During the Easter season, we will be discussing Richard Roar’s book, Breathing Under Water: Spirituality of 12 Steps. Join us! Our True Selves—Room 240 The Rev. Dr. Thee Smith leads this series of co-listening classes that aim to enhance our ability to be fully ourselves—our true, worthy and estimable selves. We become most truly ourselves through beloved community with other selves, just as God in Trinity is three-Persons in unity. Yet there are also best practices that can aid us in listening for ‘the sound of the genuine in both others and ourselves’ (coined by the celebrated preacher-mystic, Howard Thurman). Topics can include everyday experiences and range through tough political issues as well as lifestyle choices and faith matters. For more information, contact The Rev. Thee Smith at 404-365-1093 or tsmith@stphilipscathedral.org. Small Group Bible Study—Room 122 Jim Bingham and Gordon Mathis lead an ongoing small group Bible Study focusing on a particular book of the Bible for several months at a time. This year, we will read the book of Genesis. For more information, please contact Jim Bingham at 404-373-3273 or binghamjim@bellsouth.net. 1:15 p.m., The Enjoyment of Biblical Greek—Room 356 Open to beginners, this class includes long-term members who use translation aids including lexicons and commentaries to enjoy how probing the Greek of New Testament texts adds nuance and depth to reading Holy Scripture. For more information, contact The Rev. Dr. Thee Smith (404-365-1093, tsmith@ stphilipscathedral.org).
