The Last Sunday after the Epiphany: Year A

26 February 2017  8:45 A.M. and 11:15 A.M. Holy Baptism and Holy Eucharist

8:45 a.m. The Reverend Theophus “Thee” Smith, Ph.D., Celebrant The Very Reverend Samuel G. Candler, Preacher 11:15 a.m. The Reverend Canon C. Wallace Marsh IV, Celebrant The Very Reverend Samuel G. Candler, Preacher The 8:45 a.m. service in the Cathedral gathers the largest and most diverse age groups of the parish. We rejoice and laugh with smaller children who are a large presence here; so the sermons, prayers, and hymns are intentionally developed to have a wide and educational appeal. This service maintains the grandeur and grace of the Anglican tradition, but our faith is presented in a creative and wide style. Should one be meeting the Episcopal Church from another tradition, this is our most accessible service. The 11:15 a.m. Eucharist presents the splendor of the Christian faith in its most glorious Anglican fashion. Our music, our prayers, and our sermons use the finest sources our spiritual history can offer. Incense is used on feast days. Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

A Reading from The Book of Exodus.

The Lord said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain, and wait there; and I will give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction.” So Moses set out with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. To the elders he had said, “Wait here for us, until we come to you again; for Aaron and Hur are with you; whoever has a dispute may go to them.” Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. The glory of the Lord settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days; on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the cloud. Now the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. Moses entered the cloud, and went up on the mountain. Moses was on the mountain for forty days and forty nights. Lector All

Matthew 17:1-9

All

Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Six days after Peter had acknowledged Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the Living God, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, “This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!” When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Get up and do not be afraid.” And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, “Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.” Gospeler All

The Thanksgiving over the Water

BCP, p. 306

The Celebrant blesses the water, first saying

Celebrant All

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Celebrant All

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Celebrant

We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

At the following words, the Celebrant touches the water

Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

The Baptism

BCP, p. 307

The Congregation may be seated for the baptisms. The Candidates are presented by name to the Priest who pours water upon each Candidate, saying

N., I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Then the Celebrant, using chrism, places a hand on the child’s head, marking on the forehead the sign of the cross and saying

N., you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ’s own for ever. Amen. All stand. Parents, Godparents, and the newly baptized gather at the font. After the baptisms, the Celebrant says

Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon these your servants the forgiveness of sin, and have raised them to the new life of grace. Sustain them, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give them an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. The Celebrant introduces the newly baptized, and then says

Let us welcome the newly baptized. All

We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood.

The Peace

All stand. The Celebrant says

All

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

All greet one another in the name of the Lord.

The Lord’s my Shepherd, I’ll not want; He makes me down to lie In pastures green; he leadeth me The quiet waters by.

Yea, though I walk through death’s dark vale Yet will I fear no ill; For thou art with me, and thy rod And staff me comfort still.

My soul he doth restore again, And me to walk doth make Within the paths of righteousness, E’en for his own name’s sake.

My table thou hast furnished In presence of my foes; My head thou dost with oil anoint, And my cup overflows.

Goodness and mercy all my life Shall surely follow me; And in God’s house for evermore My dwelling place shall be.

Eucharistic Prayer B, BCP, p. 367

Celebrant All

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant All

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Celebrant

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because in the mystery of the Word made flesh, you have caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give the knowledge of your glory in the face of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

All sing.

All stand or kneel.

Celebrant

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

All

We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

Celebrant

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

ADULT EDUCATION All classes meet at 10:10 a.m. unless otherwise noted.

Adult Confirmation Class—Child Hall Confirmation in the Episcopal Church is a “mature public affirmation of faith and commitment to the responsibilities of Baptism.” If you are new to the Episcopal Church or simply have a desire to find out more about the Church and this Cathedral parish, come learn with us this semester. This class is coordinated by Canon Wallace Marsh and taught in rotation by Dean Sam Candler and various Cathedral clergy, with occasional guest speakers. This morning, Canon Wallace Marsh will be presenting on Church History. Beginning Biblical Greek Class—Room 356 The New Testament Greek class is offered on a drop-in basis at no cost. No previous language expertise is required; every class begins with the Greek alphabet and pronunciation practice. The Divine Dance–Room 239 “Trinity says that God’s power is not domination, threat, or coercion, but instead is a totally different nature, one that even Jesus’ followers have not adjusted to. If the Father does not dominate the Son, and the Son does not dominate the Holy Spirit, and the Spirit does not dominate the Father or the Son, then there is no domination in God. All Divine power is shared power, which should have entirely changed Christian politics and relations. There is no seeking of power over the Trinity, but only power with—a giving away, a sharing, a letting go, and thus an infinity of trust and mutuality. This has the power to change all relationships: in marriage, in culture and even in international relations.” Canon Carolynne Williams leads this class on Fr. Richard Rohr’s book. Old Fashioned Sunday School: Who do you say that I am? Imagining Jesus through the Centuries–Room 133 We are looking at images of Jesus that have been developed over time. This morning, Canon Cathy Zappa will lead a discussion on Jesus, the Romantic. As always, you will find those things that we think matter most: a light heart, a broad welcome, and good coffee. We look forward to seeing you there. Small Group Bible Study—Room 122 Jim Bingham and Gordon Mathis lead an ongoing small group Bible Study focusing on a particular book of the Bible for several months at a time. This year, we will read the Letter of Paul to the Romans. For more information, please contact Jim Bingham at 404-373-3273 or binghamjim@bellsouth.net. 1:15 p.m., Continuing Biblical Greek Class—Room 356 Anyone who would like to learn Greek is welcome to subscribe to this Sunday afternoon class taught by the Rev. Thee Smith. Translate from the original language of the scriptures. Enjoy discussions of the Greek of the New Testament texts, and how that can add nuance and depth of understanding to one’s reading of the New Testament. No tuition; only texts or media costs.
