The Twenty-third Sunday after Pentecost: Proper 26B 31 October 2021 Evensong  4:00 P.M. The Holy Communion  5:00 P.M. The Reverend Theophus “Thee” Smith, Ph.D., Officiant & Preacher The Cathedral Schola Solemn Evensong (sung Evening Prayer) is one of the jewels of the Anglican tradition. Most of the service is sung, often by the choir alone; and a sermon is always offered. At the formal close of Evensong itself, a traditional “liturgy of the table” is offered for those seeking afternoon communion (Eucharist). Occasionally, a classically sung Eucharist, or a diocesan confirmation, or a special sung service of prayer, takes the place of Evensong. Evensong and Eucharist are scheduled from September through May of each year. All stand for

Anglican chant: George Thalben-Ball (1896-1987) BCP, p. 613

The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, * the world and all who dwell therein. For it is he who founded it upon the seas * and made it firm upon the rivers of the deep. Who can ascend the hill of the Lord? * and who can stand in his holy place? “Those who have clean hands and a pure heart, * who have not pledged themselves to falsehood, nor sworn by what is a fraud. They shall receive a blessing from the Lord * and a just reward from the God of their salvation.” Such is the generation of those who seek him, * of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob. Lift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting doors; * and the King of glory shall come in. “Who is this King of glory?” * “The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle.” Lift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting doors; * and the King of glory shall come in. 2

“Who is he, this King of glory?” * “The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory.” Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Lessons The First Lesson Lector

Ruth 1:6-7, 11-18 A Lesson from The Book of Ruth.

Then Naomi started to return with her daughters-in-law from the country of Moab, for she had heard in the country of Moab that the Lord had considered his people and given them food. So she set out from the place where she had been living, she and her two daughters-in-law, and they went on their way to go back to the land of Judah. But Naomi said, “Turn back, my daughters, why will you go with me? Do I still have sons in my womb that they may become your husbands? Turn back, my daughters, go your way, for I am too old to have a husband. Even if I thought there was hope for me, even if I should have a husband tonight and bear sons, would you then wait until they were grown? Would you then refrain from marrying? No, my daughters, it has been far more bitter for me than for you, because the hand of the Lord has turned against me.” Then they wept aloud again. Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clung to her. So she said, “See, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods; return after your sister-in-law.” But Ruth said, “Do not press me to leave you or to turn back from following you! Where you go, I will go; Where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die, I will die— there will I be buried. May the Lord do thus and so to me, and more as well, if even death parts me from you!” When Naomi saw that she was determined to go with her, she said no more to her. Lector

The Magnificat

music: Eriks Ešenvalds (b. 1977), Merton College Service words: Luke 1:46-55; & Gloria Patri

Magnificat anima mea Dominum. Amen.

My soul doth magnify the Lord. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my saviour. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden: For behold, henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me; and holy is his name. And his mercy is from generation to generation upon them who fear him. He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel. As he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Second Lesson Lector A Lesson from The Gospel of Mark.

Mark 12:28-34

One of the scribes came near and heard the Saducees disputing with one another, and seeing that Jesus answered them well, he asked him, “Which commandment is the first of all?” Jesus answered, “The first is, ‘Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” Then the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that ‘he is one, and besides him there is no other’; and ‘to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength,’ and ‘to love one’s neighbor as oneself,’ —this is much more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” After that no one dared to ask him any question. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper, et in saecula saeculorum. Amen.

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people, To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Anthem after the Third Collect

music: Edgar L. Bainton (1870-1956), And I saw a new heaven words: Revelation 21:1-4

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I, John, saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them and be their God.” And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things are passed away. All are welcome to receive the consecrated bread of the Eucharist. Come to the altar at the direction of the ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail and receive the bread (a wafer) in the palm of your hand. If you desire to receive a blessing, cross your arms across your chest.

The Postcommunion Prayer Officiant Let us pray. All Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end.
