Amen. The Lesson Lector

Job 38:1-7, 34-41 A Reading from The Book of Job.

Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind: “Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to me. “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements—surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy?” “Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, so that a flood of waters may cover you? Can you send forth lightnings, so that they may go and say to you, ‘Here we are’? Who has put wisdom in the inward parts, or given understanding to the mind? Who has the wisdom to number the clouds? Or who can tilt the waterskins of the heavens, when the dust runs into a mass and the clods cling together? “Can you hunt the prey for the lion, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions, when they crouch in their dens, or lie in wait in their covert? Who provides for the raven its prey, when its young ones cry to God, and wander about for lack of food?” Lector All

The Holy Gospel Gospeler

All

Mark 10:35-45

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, Lord Christ.

James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to Jesus and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” And he said to them, “What is it you want me to do for you?” And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” They replied, “We are able.” Then Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, “You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.” Gospeler All

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Presentation and Examination of the Candidates Bishop

The Candidates will now be presented.

Presenter

I present these persons for Confirmation.

The Bishop asks the candidates

Candidate Bishop Candidate

Do you reaffirm your renunciation of evil? I do. Do you renew your commitment to Jesus Christ? I do, and with God’s grace I will follow him as my Savior and Lord.

All stand. The Bishop addresses the congregation, saying

All Bishop

Will you who witness these vows do all in your power to support these persons in their life in Christ? We will. Let us join with those who are committing themselves to Christ and renew our own baptismal covenant.

The Baptismal Covenant Bishop Do you believe in God the Father? All I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Bishop All

Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Bishop All

Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Bishop

Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? I will, with God’s help.

All Bishop All

Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? I will, with God’s help.

Bishop All

Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? I will, with God’s help.

Bishop All

Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? I will, with God’s help.

Music During Confirmation Anthem

music: John Hilton (the Younger) (c. 1599-1657), Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy statutes words: Psalm 119:33-40

Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy statutes, and I shall keep it unto the end. Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law: yea, I shall keep it with my whole heart. Make me to go in the paths of thy commandments: for therein is my desire. Incline my heart unto thy testimonies: and not to covetousness. O turn away mine eyes, lest they behold vanity: and quicken thou me in thy way. O stablish thy word in thy servant: that I may fear thee. Take away the rebuke that I am afraid of: for thy judgements are good. Behold, my delight is in thy commandements: O quicken me in thy righteousness. Hymn 655

music: Nyland, Finnish fold melody, adapt. David Evans (1874-1948) words: John Ernest Bode (1816-1874), alt.

7

Hymn 636

music: Foundation, melody from The Sacred Harp, 1844 words: K. in John Rippon’s Selection, 1787, alt.

The Bishop concludes with this prayer

Almighty and everliving God, let your fatherly hand ever be over these your servants; let your Holy Spirit ever be with them; and so lead them in the knowledge and obedience of your Word, that they may serve you in this life, and dwell with you in the life to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Peace

The Celebrant says

All

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

THE HOLY COMMUNION The Offertory The Offertory Anthem

music: Herbert Howells (1892-1983), Jubilate Deo (Collegium Regale) words: Psalm 100, & Gloria Patri

O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands; serve the Lord with gladness and come before his presence with a song. Be ye sure that the Lord he is God; it is he that hath made us and not we ourselves; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture. O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise; be thankful unto him and speak good of his Name. For the Lord is gracious; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth from generation to generation. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The Presentation: Hymn 488

music: Slane, Irish ballad melody, adapt. The Church Hymnary, 1927 words: Irish, ca. 700; versified Mary Elizabeth Byrne (1880-1931); tr. Eleanor H. Hull (1860-1935), alt.

The Great Thanksgiving

Eucharistic Prayer A, The Book of Common Prayer (BCP), p. 361

Celebrant All

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Celebrant All

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant All

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Celebrant

Because in Jesus Christ our Lord you have received us as your sons and daughters, made us citizens of your kingdom, and given us the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: The Sanctus and Benedictus

S 125, Richard Proulx, A Community Mass

Celebrant

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

10

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: All

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

Celebrant

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread Celebrant Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; All Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

The Communion Communion Anthem

music: Spiritual, arr. William Dawson (1899-1990), There is a Balm in Gilead words: traditional Spiritual, and paraphrase of Jeremiah 8:22

There is a Balm in Gilead, To make the wounded whole, There is a Balm in Gilead, To heal the sin-sick soul. Sometimes I feel discouraged, And think my work’s in vain, But then the Holy Spirit Revives my soul again. There is a Balm in Gilead, To make the wounded whole, There is a Balm in Gilead, To heal the sin-sick soul. If you cannot sing like angels, If you cannot preach like Paul, You can tell the love of Jesus, And say “He died for all.” There is a Balm in Gilead, To make the wounded whole, There is a Balm in Gilead, To heal the sin-sick soul.

All sing.

Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood.
