Recital Jack Mitchener, Organ Fantasie und Fuge über den Choral “Ad nos, ad salutarem undam,” S. 259 Franz Liszt (1811-1886) (Fantasy and Fugue on the chorale “Come to us, to the waves of salvation”) Franz Liszt composed the Fantasy and Fugue on the chorale “Ad nos, ad salutarem undam” in the winter of 1850 when he was in Weimar, Germany. The work was given its premiere on October 29, 1852. The revised version was first performed in Merseburg Cathedral on September 26, 1855

by German organist Alexander Winterberger. Liszt’s inspiration for this monumental work was a chorale in Giacomo Meyerbeer’s opera Le prophète. The chorale, “Ad nos, ad salutarem undam,” was a newly-composed melody by Meyerbeer. In the opera, three evil Anabaptist zealots in 16thcentury Holland attempt to coerce the Dutch people into being re-baptized in order to be saved by God. In so doing, they sing the chorale “Come to us, to the waves of salvation.” The melody is in the minor mode and is characterized by devilish and awkward leaps and a dotted rhythm.

This work is symphonic in its structure and character, and there are three main sections. The Fantasy opens with the “Ad nos” theme and builds in intensity and dynamics. There are contrasts between more reflective passages and exuberant and virtuosic writing. A second climatic section leads to the middle portion of the work, the Adagio. This serves as a development section. It begins softly, and the theme moves to major keys in contrast to the minor keys of the preceding section. The Fugue is the third and concluding section of the work. It is the finale, but also, within the sonata form, is the recapitulation and coda. Here elements from the previous sections appear again. The piece ends with a triumphant coda in C Major, on full organ.

Most performances last a little more than 30 minutes, although renderings by Liszt and by Winterberger lasted, according to contemporary reports, an average of 40 minutes. In 1856, Liszt said “I wish to avoid as far as possible that mechanical kind of playing which meticulously adhering to the meter, splits up the performance by perpetually emphasizing the strong and weak beats, which mode of playing is, however, still customary in some places. I acknowledge only that kind of periodic style of execution which emphasizes the essential accents and displays the nuances of the music by means of melodic and rhythmic shaping.”

Organist and Artist-in-Residence at The Cathedral of St. Philip, Jack Mitchener is also Professor of Organ, University Organist, Chair of the Keyboard Department, and Director of the Townsend-McAfee Institute of Church Music at Mercer University in Macon, GA. He is a former organ professor at Oberlin College and Conservatory, the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, and Salem College. He has concertized throughout the USA, Europe, and Asia including recitals at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris and the Cultural Centre in Hong Kong. Winner of the Philadelphia AGO Competition and Music Teachers National Association National Organ Competition, he also was a top prize-winner in the Dublin International Competition. He has recorded for the Gothic and Raven labels. According to The American Organist, “Jack Mitchener brings music to life with his supple rhythmic control, clear phrasing, energy, and sensitivity.” In response to his recording, Dulcet Tones, a reviewer for the International Record Review of London asserted: “Superb…an impressive and rather moving listening experience.” He has performed the complete organ works of Bach and given recitals, lectures, and master classes for conventions of the American Guild of Organists, Organ Historical Society, Music Teachers National Association, the Hymn Society, and many denominational organizations including the Association of Anglican Musicians. He also has premiered works by Emma Lou Diemer, Dan Locklair, and Margaret Vardell Sandresky.

He holds a doctorate, two master’s degrees and two Performer’s Certificates in organ and harpsichord from the Eastman School of Music. As a student at the National Conservatory in Rueil-Malmaison, France, he won the Médaille d’or in harpsichord and Prix d’Excellence and Prix de Virtuosité in organ.

Acts 8:26-40 A Reading from The Acts of the Apostles.

An angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Get up and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” (This is a wilderness road.) So he got up and went. Now there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of the Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, in charge of her entire treasury. He had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning home; seated in his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isaiah. Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over to this chariot and join it.”

So Philip ran up to it and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah. He asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” He replied, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to get in and sit beside him. Now the passage of the scripture that he was reading was this:

“Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter, and like a lamb silent before its shearer, so he does not open his mouth.

In his humiliation justice was denied him.

Who can describe his generation?

For his life is taken away from the earth.”

The eunuch asked Philip, “About whom, may I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?” Then Philip began to speak, and starting with this scripture, he proclaimed to him the good news about Jesus. As they were going along the road, they came to some water; and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water! What is to prevent me from being baptized?” He commanded the chariot to stop, and both of them, Philip and the eunuch, went down into the water, and Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. But Philip found himself at Azotus, and as he was passing through the region, he proclaimed the good news to all the towns until he came to Caesarea.
