I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.

For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith; ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness.

When Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah!

For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” Then he sternly ordered the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

The Sermon

The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,

and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Gracious God, we pray for all who seek you to find you, all who seek to live out their faith in their daily lives, and all who stand for justice, freedom and unity.

Strengthen them so that your church may proclaim your saving power, reveal your eternal love and abide in your peace.

Within the Anglican Communion, we pray for the Church of the Province of South East Asia.

Within the Episcopal Church, we pray for Michael, our Presiding Bishop, and for Robert, our Bishop.

Within this Cathedral parish, we pray for our ministry of the day: The Cathedral Preschool Board of Directors.

Intercessor

We pray for scientists and researchers, and all who influence our lives by their experiments and discoveries.

For all who are in positions of power and authority, all leaders of nations, governments and decision-makers especially Donald, our President; Brian, our Governor; and Keisha, our Mayor. Fill them with your wisdom and grace that they may work with care and ingenuity to the building of your Kingdom.

Intercessor

Gracious God, look with love on all our teachers and places of learning.

Pour out your grace upon them as they return.

May your Spirit enliven their hearts, encourage curiosity, and let wisdom be their guide.

In your kindness, guide them along paths that are free from anxiety and filled with confidence to meet the days ahead.

We pray for those who are entering new grades and new schools, that they may have a safe and smooth transition.

Bless those especially who are rising freshman into college, that they may flourish and enjoy their new chapter of their lives safely, healthily, but mostly through your guidance.

Help them to remember to stay safe, but also to savor these new memories.

We pray for all who work in dangerous places, whose lives are at risk as they care for others.

We pray for the emergency services and those who respond whenever people are in trouble.

Fill them with your grace and courage as they go out to serve a world in need of your Peace.

We pray for all who are faced with illness in body or mind.

We pray for all who are disabled, all whose sickness has no cure, and those whose illness is known to you alone.

Fill them with your steadfast hope and renew them to the newness of life that rests in you alone.

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.
