The Welcome
THE WORD OF GOD
The Opening Hymn: 690
music: Cwm Rhondda, John Hughes (1873-1952) words: William Williams (1717-1791); trans. by Peter Williams (1722-1796), alt.

The Opening Acclamation
Celebrant: Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
All: And blessed be God’s kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.
The Collect for Purity
Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Collect of the Day: Proper 14
Celebrant: The Lord be with you.
All: And also with you.
Celebrant: Let us pray.
Grant to us, Lord, we pray, the spirit to think and do always those things that are right, that we, who cannot exist without you, may by you be enabled to live according to your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
The Epistle: Ephesians 4:25–5:2
Lector: A Reading from The Letter of Paul to the Ephesians.
Putting away falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our neighbors, for we are members of one another. Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not make room for the devil. Thieves must give up stealing; rather let them labor and work honestly with their own hands, so as to have something to share with the needy. Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up, as there is need, so that your words may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were marked with a seal for the day of redemption. Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you. Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
Lector: The Word of the Lord.
All: Thanks be to God.
All stand.
The Sequence: Hymn 593
music: Dickinson College, Lee Hastings Bristol, Jr. (1923-1979) words by James Quinn (1919-2010), based on prayer att. Francis of Assisi (1182-1226)

All remain standing.
The Holy Gospel: John 6:35, 41-51
Gospeler: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. All: Glory to you, Lord Christ.
Jesus said, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” Then the Jews began to complain about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” They were saying, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” Jesus answered them, “Do not complain among yourselves. No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me; and I will raise that person up on the last day. It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
Gospeler: The Gospel of the Lord.
All: Praise to you, Lord Christ.
The Sermon: Canon Maxwell

THE HOLY COMMUNION
The Offertory
The Offertory Anthem
music: César Franck (1822-1890), Panis angelicus words: St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274)
Panis angelicus, fit panis hominum; Dat panis coelicus figuris terminum. O res mirabilis manducat Dominum, Pauper, servus, et humilis. Te trina Deitas unaque poscimus, Sic nos tu visita, sicut te colimus; Per tuas semitas duc nos quo tendimus, Ad lucem quam inhabitas.
The bread of angels becomes the bread of humankind; the bread of heaven brings an end to earthly symbols. O great wonder: of the Lord the poor and lowly partake. O Triune God, we pray you, visit us as we worship. Lead us, where we desire to go, to the light in which you dwell.

The Great Thanksgiving
Eucharistic Prayer B, The Book of Common Prayer (BCP), p. 367
Celebrant: The Lord be with you.
All: And also with you.
Celebrant: Lift up your hearts.
All: We lift them to the Lord.
Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
All: It is right to give God thanks and praise.
Celebrant: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
For by water and the Holy Spirit you have made us a new people in Jesus Christ our Lord, to show forth your glory in all the world.
Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:
The Sanctus and Benedictus
S 129, Robert Powell

Celebrant: We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.
On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Therefore, according to his command, O Father,
All: We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;
Celebrant: And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.
We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.
By Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
The Breaking of the Bread
Celebrant: Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;
All: Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.
The Communion
Communion Anthem
music: Percy W. Whitlock (1903-1946), O Living Bread! who once didst die words: Bishop William Walsham How (1823-1897)
O Living Bread! Who once didst die, And lay Thee down in rocky tomb: Within my heart for ever lie, And shed Thy brightness o’er its gloom. O precious Blood! So freely shed, Sweet pledge of pardon from above: Speak to my heart so cold and dead, And wake it into Life and Love. O Sacred Food! O Cleansing Tide! Fill all my soul with Love divine: O Thou who didst my life redeem: Come to my heart and make me Thine. Amen.
Communion Hymn: 577
music: Ubi caritas (Murray), A. Gregory Murray (1905-1992) words: Henry Williams Baker (1821-1877), alt.

The Postcommunion Prayer
Celebrant: Let us pray.
All: Almighty and everliving God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.
