The Day of Pentecost: Whitsunday: Year B
8:45 A.M. and 11:15 A.M.
The Holy Eucharist in Social Distance for the Common Good
The Very Reverend Samuel G. Candler, Celebrant
The Reverend Canon George M. Maxwell, Jr., Preacher
Grace and peace to you! We are the Body of Christ, connected spiritually and emotionally, and visually, even when we cannot gather together in person. Prepared in social distance for the common good, this liturgy honors the patterns of our tradition and is intended to facilitate our continued common prayer, as we share spiritual communion.
Today, we celebrate together the Feast of Pentecost! You will hear the Gospel proclaimed in several languages—our way of remembering that first Pentecost described in today’s reading from Acts. Also, we will be welcoming those who have been baptized at the Cathedral since Easter.

The Gloria in excelsis
S 278, William Mathias

The Collect of the Day: The Day of Pentecost: Whitsunday
Celebrant: The Lord be with you.
All: And also with you.
Celebrant: Let us pray. O God, who on this day taught the hearts of your faithful people by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit: Grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
The Lesson: Acts 2:1-21
Lector: A Reading from The Acts of the Apostles.
When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.
Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.”
But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:
‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ ”
Lector: The Word of the Lord.
All: Thanks be to God.
The Gradual: Psalm 104:25-35, 37
Anglican chant: Walter Parratt BCP, p. 736
25 O Lord, how manifold are your works! * in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.
26 Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number, * creatures both small and great.
27 There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan, * which you have made for the sport of it.
28 All of them look to you * to give them their food in due season.
29 You give it to them; they gather it; * you open your hand, and they are filled with good things.
30 You hide your face, and they are terrified; * you take away their breath, and they die and return to their dust.
31 You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; * and so you renew the face of the earth.
32 May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; * may the Lord rejoice in all his works.
33 He looks at the earth and it trembles; * he touches the mountains and they smoke.
34 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; * I will praise my God while I have my being.
35 May these words of mine please him; * I will rejoice in the Lord.
37 Bless the Lord, O my soul. * Hallelujah!
The Sequence: Hymn 504
music: Veni Creator Spiritus, plainsong, Mode 8 words: Latin, 9th cent.; tr. John Cosin (1594–1672); para. of Veni Creator Spiritus

The Holy Gospel: John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15
Gospeler: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.
All: Glory to you, Lord Christ.
Jesus said to his disciples, “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning.
“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.
“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”
Gospeler: The Gospel of the Lord.
All: Praise to you, Lord Christ.
The Sermon: Canon Maxwell

THE HOLY COMMUNION
The Offertory
At the time of the offertory, as the choir offers the gift of music in the Offertory Anthem, you may offer whatever you have to God. Each of us has something to offer, and every one of those offerings is accepted by God. In a few minutes, when the celebrant prays the Eucharistic Prayer, God blesses all those offerings, wherever they are today. If you would like to make a financial offering to the ministry of the Cathedral, you may do so by visiting: cathedralATL.org/contribute.
The Offertory Anthem
music: Morten Lauridsen (b. 1943), from Lux Aeterna, Veni, Sancte Spiritus words: 13th-century Latin sequence for Pentecost
Veni, Sancte Spiritus, et emitte coelitus lucis tuae radium. Come, Holy, Spirit, send forth from haven the ray of thy light. Veni, pater pauperum, veni, dator munerum, veni, lumen cordium. Come, Father of the poor, come, giver of gifts, come, light of hearts. Consolator optime, dulcis hospes animae, dulce refrigerium. Thou best of Consolers, sweet guest of the soul, sweet refreshment. In labore requies, in aestu temperies, in fletu solatium. In labor, thou art rest, in heat, the tempering, in grief, the consolation. O lux beatissima, reple cordis intima tuorum fidelium. O Light most blessed, fill the inmost hearts of all thy faithful. Sine tuo numine, nihil est in homine, nihil est innoxium. Without your grace, there is nothing in us, nothing that is not harmful. Lava quod est sordidum, riga quod est aridum, sana quod est saucium. Cleanse what is sordid, moisten what is arid, heal what is hurt. Flecte quod est rigidum, fove quod est frigidum, rege quod est devium. Flex what is rigid, fire what is frigid, correct what goes astray. Da tuis fidelibus, in te confidentibus, sacrum septenarium. Grant to thy faithful, those trusting in thee, thy sacred seven-fold gifts. Da virtutis meritum, da salutis exitum, da perenne gaudium. Grant the reward of virtue, grant the deliverance of salvation, grant everlasting joy.
The Great Thanksgiving
Eucharistic Prayer A, The Book of Common Prayer (BCP), p. 361
Celebrant: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. Celebrant: Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All: It is right to give God thanks and praise. Celebrant: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. In fulfillment of his true promise, the Holy Spirit came down on this day from heaven, lighting upon the disciples, to teach them and to lead them into all truth; uniting peoples of many tongues in the confession of one faith, and giving to your Church the power to serve you as a royal priesthood, and to preach the Gospel to all nations. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:
The Sanctus and Benedictus
S 128, William Mathias

Celebrant: Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.
He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:
All: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
Celebrant: We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.
Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.
All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
The Breaking of the Bread
Celebrant: Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;
All: Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.
The Communion
During these next moments of meditation, wherever you are, please receive whatever gifts God makes available to you, in whatever form God makes available to you. We share spiritual communion today.
The Meditation Music
music: Grayston Ives (b. 1948), Listen, Sweet Dove, unto my song words: George Herbert (1593-1633)
Listen, sweet dove, unto my song, And spread thy golden wings in me; Hatching my tender heart so long, Till it get wing and flie away with thee. Such glorious gifts thou didst bestow That the earth did like a heaven appeare, The starres were coming down to know If they might mend their wages and serve here. The sunne which once did shine alone, Hung down his head and wisht for night, When he beheld twelve sunnes for one Going about the world and giving light. Lord, though we change, thou art the same, The same sweet God of love and light: Restore this day for thy great name, Unto his ancient and miraculous right.
The Postcommunion Prayer
Celebrant: Let us pray.
All: Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
