visit St Peter’s 2-8 to take part in our school council. The Lord Mayor answered questions from the children and explained his work in the City of York. My huge thanks to The Rt Hon the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress for giving up their time to visit school and we hope you enjoyed your visit as much as we enjoyed you being at school.

On Monday in assembly, I read a picture book by Amanda Gorman, the youngest presidential inaugural poet in US history.

She is a committed advocate for the environment, racial, equality and gender justice. The story ‘Change Sings, A Children’s Anthem’ proves anything is possible when our voices join

together. It starts, "I can hear change humming In its loudest, proudest song.

I don't fear change coming, And so, I sing along."

It continues with lyrical text and rhythmic

illustrations; Change Sings is a triumphant call to action for everyone to use their abilities to make a difference. Black History Month in October is more important than ever. It is an opportunity to celebrate the continued achievements and contributions of Black people to the UK and around the world. It is also a time for continued action to tackle racism and ensure Black history is represented and celebrated all year round. In each year group and in our library, we have been reading about the importance of black leaders and influencers in history. In Reception, each day they have been dancing to a range of black recording artists including Prince, Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley and Chaka Khan.

It was a pleasure to present Ethan with a trophy, shields and certificates as he won the Wharfdale Music Festival Piano Solo for 9 years and under and the piano solo award for 10 years and under. What a fabulous achievement and huge congratulations as Ethan is only 6 years old.

At St Peter’s 2-8 the children take on positions of responsibilities throughout the school. We appoint House Captains to the three houses of Micklegate, Monk and Walmgate. There are opportunities for the children in Year 3 to become Charity Ambassadors and promote ideas to support our school charity Children’s Heart Surgery Fund in Leeds or other charities such as Comic and Sport Relief, Children in Need and any disaster funds that may have arisen throughout their termly learning themes. The children in Year 3 can also be Wellbeing Champions, and they have been applying for these positions this week. It has been wonderful to read the applications that have been sent to Mrs Clarke. In Year 3 the children can also support the library by becoming monitors, helping the staff keep the library tidy for all to use. Each class have elected two children

Notice Board SCHOOL COUNCIL MEET THE LORD MAYOR OF YORK

School Council have had a busy week welcoming the Lord Mayor and the Lady Mayoress to our School Council meeting on Monday. Mrs Franey was incredibly proud of them all as they listened and asked questions. We found out that there are quite a few similarities between our roles and how we were elected by our class to help make positive changes in our school and the Lord Mayor's role. We found out that the only cities that have a Right Honourable Lord Mayor are York and London, we felt how heavy the chains were and

Grace, because it was her birthday, was able to wear the Lady Mayoress' chains! We found out where the couple live and that they can get out onto the roof of The Mansion House and see an amazing view of the city. They also, like us, help York to be the best place it can be for residents and visitors.

Both the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress said how much they had enjoyed their visit and thanked Council for inviting them.

MUSICAL NOTES Musical notes:- We started our week with a lively rendition of the Harvest Samba in what was our final live assembly of the half term. The children love singing and I was especially proud of our Year 1 children who managed to read all the tricky words in such a fast and lively song!

Year 2 have been working extremely hard on their fundamental movements this half term. Last week, the children looked closely at the difference between hopping and jumping.

Autumn has certainly arrived with all its sung songs about leaves, thrown leaves magnificent colours. We have had Autumn around and crunched leaves. Our master in the Acorns classroom too! We have chefs have helped chopped some

Busy busy busy… Oh how we love to be busy in CONKERS Nursery!

It’s been a brilliant week, packed full with scissor safety, superheroes, sensory play, scrumptious crumble and Autumn leaves.

Reception has been a hive of activity this week! As part of our fortnight celebrating Black History Month we have introduced the children to lots of incredible black recording artists throughout the week from Whitney to Otis Redding to Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley and Chaka Khan! The children have been inspired to create dance routines, have a 'pen disco', make their own instruments in the junk model area and even perform on our outdoor stage with our outdoor speaker playing hits from the 40's through to modern day!

Every day we have read books about inspirational black people and their impact on history using the fabulous 'Little People Big Dreams' series of books as well as some lovely fictional texts prompting some fantastic discussions.

RM enjoyed a lovely afternoon visiting the Blue House Bookshop on Bootham where they read a selection of books based around diversity and even chose some to

RECEPTION buy to bring back to Reception for the other children to enjoy. They rounded off their afternoon with a yummy hot chocolate and biscuit in the Museum Gardens.

Patterns have been our focus in Maths this week and they have popped up everywhere from transient artwork designs to the repeating pattern fruit kebabs we have made and enjoyed at our snack cafe! As always, the children's play has inspired much of our learning and it is a joy to see their imagination and ingenuity in action, including the creation of rivers and bridges, dinosaur swamps, sea life rescue centres and pop-up florists to name but a few! We can't wait to see what next week brings!

RECEPTION

A spoooooooky week in Year 1 this week as we explore more of the wumpires from our key text. The children have been thinking of adjectives to describe settings.

We used our five senses to describe the wumpire castle from Fortunately the Milk.

Our imaginations went wild and here are just a few of our descriptive words and sentences!

‘Crumbling bones’ ‘Squeaking bats’ ‘The vampires fangs are rattling’ ‘Tall, black turrets’ ‘On a dark night, I can see a shining moon’

‘The metallic tasting blood’ ‘Long, tapping fingers on the window’

We have some sewing superstars in Year 1 and not only can they make fabulous puppets, they are now using these skills to sew their names and create brilliant patterns using Binca. We have also been incredibly resourceful and reflective when designing catapults to keep Pirate Hardy away from our pirate treasure! The collaboration in Year 1 this week has been fantastic and we have been using Keva planks to make the most phenomenal vampire castles.

YEAR 1

YEAR 2

This week Year 2 have continued to romp through the history of York by learning more about the Vikings. It has been lovely to hear that many children are continuing their learning at home, visiting Roman and Viking sites in the city and acting as tour guides for their families! This week we focused our learning on homes and found out all about longhouses, which the Vikings lived in. We found out that animals were often kept in the same house, at one end, in order to keep them safe and for them to provide much needed warmth for the families. We discovered that several generations in a family would live together (and that Mrs Hall and Mrs Franey would certainly have been Elders.!) We have designed our own Small world longhouses, using materials we collected and gathered during the week and, on Art Wednesday, we

started to make the houses. We did cheat a bit by using a non-Viking glue gun, but the children used their imaginations well to create houses which reflect the learning we have done. Whilst looking at Viking life, we have also been scientists who have researched the Viking diet by looking at….POO! We discussed how important it is to eat a balanced and healthy diet and how our poo can reveal a lot of clues about our diet.

We discovered that the Vikings ate some crops such as carrots and onions, lots of grains and fish and meat for protein. We pulled on our latex gloves and used tweezers to take objects out of our Viking ‘poo’, including fish bones and pips and made notes on what we found.

Disgusting but very educational! All this has taken place as well as starting to look at addition in maths and having a clay demonstration from a teacher at St Peter’s, ahead of next week, which is Dragon Week!

Phew- enjoy the weekend, Year 2!

YEAR 2

At forest school we made transient art reindeers; scouring the forest floor for our materials and using our imaginations to create our final piece. We are continuing to add colour to our Nina Kobylinska birds from last week and look forward to bringing these home to share with our families soon!

We have moved on to learning about column subtraction in maths this week and are working on developing our knowledge of this method through tricky problem solving! In school, we are celebrating Black History month and have been enjoying looking and learning about the influential people, past and present, who have impacted the world today. We are using some of these wonderful people as a stimulus for learning and have really enjoyed re-creating Kara Walker’s silhouette puppets this week.

YEAR 3

This week Year Three have been focussing on the story so far of our themed text, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.

Recapping all of the main events, we created a Pie Corbett style story map and drew illustrations to showcase each major occasion we have covered in the book so far. We then added adjectives, verbs, adverbs and short descriptive sentences to highlight the feeling and emotion of each scene. Next, we put our acting hats on and worked together to recreate a dramatised version of our learning. We had great fun using expression and adapting our body language and movement to suit the story line.

Then, using the famous artist Kara Walker as an inspiration, we created puppets for each character/major object and re-enacted the story using our own homemade puppets! As you can imagine, this caused much enjoyment and it was lovely to see the children working collaboratively to put on their shows.

The Great St Peter’s Bake Off - Monday 18th October Bake Off is on Monday!

FoSP are so pleased to be able to run our very wonderful Bake Off event again this year. The children are invited to bake cakes, muffins, biscuits, traybakes etc based on a theme. They then bring them in on the morning of Monday 18th October to our Bake Off Tent where all bakes will be tasted, judged and prizes awarded (in year groups). 2019 was, obviously, the last time we were able to run this event, and it was truly amazing with so many of our children taking part across all of the year groups, from Acorns to Year 3. Lets make this year even bigger!! As we did last time, we have decided that Bake Off themes will predominantly follow the year groups’ learning themes, as follows:• • • • • •

Acorns - Halloween Conkers - Halloween Reception: Halloween Year 1: Fortunately the Milk Year 2: York Year 3: Narnia

Each year group will be judged separately. The all important Rules!

Bakes can be large cakes, cupcakes, traybakes, biscuits, bread - you name it!

If you would like to bake a diet-specific creation (such as Gluten Free, Egg Free etc) then, of course, that would be lovely.

Please just ensure it is clearly labelled to avoid any accidental cross-contamination in the Bake Off Tent.

Please label cake carriers (base and lid), tuppaware, plates etc with full name and class to ensure safe return, and remember to claim them at the end of the day. Unfortunately we cannot be responsible for any unlabelled items which may end up in the dishwasher in the Dining Room!

Please label your bakes clearly with the following details: Name of entrant Class Title of bake (optional) Any relevant dietary information Whether you do/do not want your creation sold at the end of the day Please deliver to the Bake Off Tents (outside the Medical Centre) at drop-off on the morning of Monday 18th October. Place entries in the relevant class section. Entries close at 9.30am.

The themes can be interpreted in a variety of ways including in the decoration, ingredients, shape......so enjoy getting creative!!

Judging will take place during the morning with all factors being taken into consideration so make sure its super yummy as well as beautiful! Winners will be announced by Mr Hardy. There will be Year Group winners, as well as runners-up for each class.

And most importantly GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY BAKING!

Bake Off Cake Sale - Monday 18th October As has become customary after our Bake Off Competition we will be selling all of the wonderful creations that our children have made after school on 18th October. So please pop the date in your diary to come along for a cup of tea and a slice of Mr Tumnus's Teacake, or a Homemade Halloween Hobnob! (NB - if you would like to keep some or all of your creation, that is absolutely fine and we will let you know how to do this nearer the time).
