THURSDAY

The Reception children have enjoyed their book of the week, ‘The Journey’, which has inspired their learning and have thoroughly enjoyed cooking flatbreads on a camp fire at forest school. The Year 1 children have discovered three enormous trees in their classrooms and are excited to discover the secrets that trees can tell.

Year 2 had a visit from a White Rabbit at Forest School who gave each of the Year 2 classes a book before dashing off. The children’s drawings of the white rabbit based on Sir John Tenniel’s famous illustrations have been stunning. When the Year 3 children arrived on Monday, they found a letter addressed to a man named Edmund Wood. Through extensive research and using Google Earth it transpired that Edmund was a meteorologist who had been offered a job on Bear Island in the Arctic Circle.

Edmund and his daughter April have embarked on an exciting adventure together which the children will discover more as they read their themed text, ‘The Last Bear’.

In our celebration assembly this morning it was great to hear all the learning that has taken place this week. It was lovely to hear the teachers talk about their learning superheroes and value champions for the week and the experiences each class has had. I also had the opportunity to thank the outgoing House Captains, Georgia, Joseph and Olivia for all their work last term and to welcome the House Captains for the Easter Term, Lottie, Norman and Tom. Norman’s first job was to lift the House point trophy this week for his house Micklegate.

The co-curricular activities started this week, and it is brilliant watching the children participate in all the clubs at school. These have included, art, science, cricket, football, tennis, drama, film club, creative club, sign language, street dance, engineering, choir, multisport, coding, language club, netball and groovy Greek club to name a few.

MONDAY

A warm welcome to the start of the Easter Term 2022 to both new and existing families in the St Peter’s 2-8 community. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and festive period, and I was sorry to hear of families whose Christmases were affected by Covid-19. I have thoroughly enjoyed discussing the exciting experiences the children have had and the places they have travelled to whether at home or overseas during the week. The children returned to school excited to find out what this term’s theme would be.

During the Christmas holidays the teachers and teaching assistants have been busy creating new learning environments for the children. The classrooms and learning spaces around school have been transformed reflecting the themes for this term. In Year 1 the theme is ‘Wisha Wisha’ which is based on Enid Blyton’s story of the Magic Faraway Tree. In Year 2 the theme is ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and Year 3 the theme is based on Hannah Gold’s book ‘The Last Bear’. Please see the images below showing the environments the children are working in; thanks to the teachers and teaching assistants for creating these. It has been great to welcome the youngest members of our school community this week in Acorns. The children have had a great week and enjoyed meeting all the teaching staff in Nursery and across the school.

MUSICAL NOTES

It’s been a very busy first week back! It was lovely to hear the choir again on Wednesday afternoon, they are in fine voice so I am already looking forward to the Whole School Concert in February when they will be singing with the rest of the school!

We have now had our rescheduled date through for Young Voices. The children were excited to hear that they don’t have to wait too long as we will be singing in Sheffield on Thursday 28th April which is our first week back at school after the Easter holidays. It has been lovely hearing all the children’s Christmas stories this week in school.

They have all returned back to school with a huge smile on their faces, great enthusiasm and keen to learn new skills.

Year 2 and 3 finished off their tag rugby lessons this week focusing on match play. I was amazed with the children’s focus and understanding of the game, remembering to always pass backwards. I’m sure you will all agree the children had great fun with the amount of mud which was displayed on their PE kits this week.

In Core PE, the children have

started dance this term, linking to their year group themes. It has been brilliant to see the children’s imagination shine out through their creative movements. I have also been blown away by their confidence when presenting their routine back to other members in their class.

Acorns had great fun welcoming the new students to fun parachute games. They especially loved sitting under the parachute mushroom!

In games, we have started netball. It has been fabulous having all our friends back together settling back in at Nursery. We have really loved getting busy in our new Winter wonderland small world area, and it has started to spark conversations about snow and ice!

It has been especially lovely to introduce our new Mini Me peg dolls into Conkers and use them as our new morning self-registration. They have all been designed by ourselves and I think you will agree, they look fabulous!

What a super first week we have had back in Reception! The children have loved all the changes and additions to the setting and we have seen a flurry of creativity and exploration from all our little superstars! Our book of the week 'The Journey' has led to lots of visitors to the story loft and children acting out and writing about the tale. Slime in the water area was a big and messy hit especially when teamed with our magnet investigations. The sewing area has been used to create lots of sock pets and snowflake Binca art and our small world Antarctic scene has inspired the children to act out the adventures of a real-life explorer - one of our very own Reception parents!

Forest School was another great highlight of the week, with the children making and baking yummy flatbreads over the campfire; we are looking forward to making even more next

RECEPTION week. Our maths learning this week has been all about time - we loved the children's drawings of their very own daily 'timetables' and lots of songs and games have helped develop our vocabulary and understanding of seasons, days of the week and different ways of measuring time. The children continue to 'knock our socks off' in phonics and it is lovely to see them using their reading and writing skills spontaneously in their play. As always following the children's interests has meant every day is full of surprises and wonderful learning opportunities stemming from their curiosity, experiences, and imagination. Bring on week two!

RECEPTION

Wisha Wisha!

The Year 1 children have returned to school to discover that three enormous, magical, and enchanting trees have appeared in their classrooms to inspire our learning this term!

This term’s key text for Year 1 is The Magic Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton! The children have loved exploring the new key text and provision in their classrooms and have also settled back into school life tremendously well. Lots of children have made enchanting lands using small world and loose parts over the week and have demonstrated such imagination and creativity.

To kick start our theme, the children have discovered that many trees hold secrets and that the older and thicker the tree - the more secrets it has! With that in mind, the children

YEAR 1 have been working collaboratively down in the forest as they went to measure the circumference of the thickest tree that they could find! They used a piece of string to find out the length and then explored the different ways to measure the string using standard and non-standard units of measurements. We have explored and investigated the anatomy of a tree and discovered what the growth rings represent. We then applied this knowledge to create our very own irregular concentric circle watercolour paintings which are just beautiful!

We are all so very excited to find out about the lands at the top of the tree! Let the adventure begin!

YEAR 1

YEAR 2

We have had a WONDERful start to the spring term. It didn't take the children long to work out our new theme Alice in Wonderland from the clues around the classrooms! After following some peculiar signs that led us to Forest School, we were incredibly shocked to meet a very frantic white rabbit carrying a pocket watch! Amongst all of the panic of being late, he gave each class a book before dashing off back into the woods. We enjoyed eating buns and crawling through what we can only assume was a rabbit hole!

We have become familiar with the main characters in the story after reading the first chapter of our class texts and we used our knowledge of adjectives to write expanded noun phrases to describe the White Rabbit. We used these fantastic descriptions

to write a diary entry as Alice, using the first person, detailing the peculiar experience she had of falling down the rabbit hole. In art, we looked at the beautiful illustrations of the White Rabbit through a range of artists including Chris Riddell and John Tenniel. The children blew us away with their own incredibly detailed drawings of this character using their sketching skills.

We have enjoyed revising number by completing activities using playing cards inspired by our book.

These have included looking at odd and even numbers, addition and subtraction and recapping doubling and halving.

A great first week back Year 2 - we are really impressed with how you have thrown yourselves into the new theme and settled back into your learning.

It has been a chilly start back to school for Year Three! We have been whisked off on an exciting adventure to Bear Island; the southernmost island of the Norwegian Svalbard archipelago. When we arrived at school on Monday morning, we discovered a letter that was addressed to a man named Edmund Wood. It transpires that he is a meteorologist who has been offered the job of measuring weather patterns on the island. Before agreeing to go on the adventure with Edmund and his daughter April, we had to find out a little more about where it is, what it’s like and what to expect. We carried out some research as to its location and use Google Earth to look at the island and the surrounding countries.

After discovering it was in the Arctic circle, we looked carefully at the other countries which lie in that area and located them on a map, before linking them to their flags. We

moved on to explore the Aurora Borealis and used this to inspire our art work, as well as creating some 3D Arctic gulls!

In Maths this week we have been recapping our knowledge of multiplication and working on inverse operations. Through a combination of games, physical resources and written calculations, we are working on developing fluency with our times tables recall and the children have enjoyed applying their knowledge in various different ways, enabling to create depth of understanding. We are very much looking forward to seeing where our text takes us next and are very excited about our trip to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park next week!
