ST PETER’S 8-13 NEWSLETTER We started this second half of term by taking two of our musical ensembles to Burton Green Primary School, at the other end of Burton Stone Lane. They played for their pupils and then talked about the different instruments and how to play them. It was an eye opener for our pupils to see tins of dry goods at the front door for parents to help themselves to if they were struggling to feed their children. We held a lovely Informal Concert this week after school with a wide variety of instruments being played.

We had a very busy boarding taster night on Monday and several children have already signed up to start part time boarding next term. Monday also saw a varied range of performers at the informal music concert. The York Minster choristers were singing in a live BBC Radio 3 broadcast of evensong on Wednesday – it was quite something to listen to.

The 8-13 school photograph has been taken, you have received an email containing the link so that you can view it and order a copy online if you wish to.

Several of our swim teams or individual swimmers had qualified for the IAPS National Swimming Finals at the London Aquatic Centre last weekend. They were performing against some of the best swimmers in the country and the vast majority of our pupils recorded personal best times. Raya and Alice in J5 both won their finals and are now national champions! The U13 girls (Alice, Raya, Phoebe, Clara and Clara) came 2nd in the free relay and 3rd in the Medley relay so finished in 2nd place overall. Well done to all the U13, U12 and our U10 swimmers for competing so well. The U11 tennis teams had a great day in Newcastle at the HMC North East Tennis Tournament.

Viktoria and Tabitha finished 4th out of 12 schools in the final placings, our best finish. The U11 girls’ cricket team were playing in the IAPS national competition and Hettie won Player of the Tournament!

Tomorrow, we have the Year 3 parents and children coming to look round the school ahead of joining Year 4 (J1) in September.

The J5s will be the tour guides and they will also be showing round prospective families for 11+ entry for September 2023.

Our Speech Day speaker this year will be Jackson Ogunyemi, usually referred to as Action Jackson! He is the UK’s unofficial Ambassador for Happiness and has written two books and even released a music single. All parents are invited to our Speech Day and Prize Giving which is on Thursday 7th July, with everyone seated by 10.35am and the event and term finishing at 12 noon.

Parking will be on the athletics track area via the gate at the end of Westminster Road.

ConnectSafely Guidance You will be all too aware of the challenges of bringing up children in this digital age, with the increasing access to information of all sorts and the ability to create content with expanding ease. Applications like Snapchat and TikTok are two of the current favourites for children, but there are always more inviting apps being developed and coming online to entice our children into spending their time on screens.

We do spend a lot of time trying to educate children to make the best use of technology, accepting the positives and embracing the opportunities they provide, whilst still warning them of the dangers of inappropriate content and use of the internet and social media. It is so easy to get it wrong online, and children do need to learn to make mistakes, take responsibility and learn valuable lessons from those.

Please keep talking to your children about the apps that they use and what they are doing online. It is healthy to develop a trusting relationship where they know you can, and do check out what they are up to online and what they are posting.

The following website has some really great guides for parents which tell you what you need to know about your children using things such as TikTok, Snapchat, Roblox and Minecraft. They are designed to give you areas to start conversations with your children about how to stay safe when using these apps.

J2 Castle Music Workshop Earlier this year, the J2s looked at the medieval period and castle life, in history. This workshop, given by Mr Bailey who is an expert in early music, was to show them an amazing array of instruments from this time (over 25 instruments), demonstrate how they were played and explain how the instruments were brought from around the world and how they developed over time. The J2s got to visit the history classroom where they will have lessons next year. They asked lots of brilliant questions and we will be building on this together when we look at Tudor music next year.

Reminders Please ensure that all belongings are named, it is far easier to re-unite items that are labelled items with their owner.

During periods of warmer weather, could all pupils please ensure they have sun cream in school.

Hair accessories should follow the guidelines set out in the Parent Handbook.

We are a nut free school, snacks brought into school must not contain nuts.

School bags should be a plain black or navy rucksack. Please do not use brightly coloured or patterned bags.

Ingredients

Mushroom Risotto Recipe - J4 Cookery Session

600ml-700ml vegetable stock 1 small onion 100g mushrooms 1 clove of garlic 1 tbsp. vegetable oil 150g-risotto rice (Arborio or Carnaroli) 15g grated Parmesan (optional) 1/2 tsp dried thyme 1. Make 600ml of vegetable stock and keep warm in a saucepan over a gentle heat.

2. Wash and dry the mushrooms then slice thinly, peel and dice the onion and peel and crush the garlic.

3. On a medium heat, add a little oil to a frying pan and add the sliced mushrooms. Fry until softened. Remove the mushrooms from the pan.

4.Add a little more oil to the frying pan and after a few minutes put in the onion. Cook for about 5 minutes, stirring often until soft, but do not brown. Add the garlic and fry lightly then add the risotto rice and coat it with the oil and onions and cook for a few minutes until the rice becomes slightly translucent. Be careful not to burn the rice.

5. Pour in a ladle of stock to the rice and stir. Turn down the heat to a simmer. Keep adding the stock a ladleful at a time while continuing to stir. Allow each addition of stock to be absorbed before adding another one. Stir the mixture often, this will ensure the risotto has a creamy texture. Once most of the stock has been added check that the rice is cooked. It should be soft but retain some bite. This should take approximately 15-20 minutes. Add a little more hot water if needed 6. Stir in the cooked mushrooms and thyme. Add the Parmesan before serving.

Commemorating the 80th anniversary of conscription for women, with an extra special nod to fellow Army Girl and driver HM Queen Elizabeth in her Jubilee year, 96-year-old Barbara Weatherill will explain how aged seventeen she left the Yorkshire Dales and joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service. She trained in Camberley where Princess Elizabeth did a similar course. (‘Well yes, but remember HRH did a truncated version!’) and worked on British anti-aircraft gun sites for two years. Tessa Dunlop will help locate Barbara’s extraordinary story in the broader wartime context when thinking on women in the military was overturned, and thousands of teenage girls served King and country in uniform. Tessa captures the remarkable stories from the last surviving veterans who served in Britain’s female army, bringing to life a pivotal moment in British history.

The Atom Learning Young Author Award Love writing? Aged 7-11? We’re on the hunt for the UK’s best young storytellers!

To celebrate the budding wordsmiths of the UK, we're running a nationwide creative writing competition.

There are stellar prizes to be won (including a trip to Disneyland for a family of four!), so this summer it’s time to pick up a pen!

Entries close on 31st August 2022. There are two categories: ages 7-9 and ages 10-11. The Atom Learning Young Author Award is open to all children aged 7 to 11 years old on the submission deadline (11:59pm 31st August 2022). Entrants must be residents of the United Kingdom. HMC junior school athletics competition Last Friday, after a two-year break, the annual HMC athletics meet resumed. Fifteen schools from the North-East of England competed in the event which was held at the University of York. All the St Peter’s pupils enjoyed the experience of attending an athletics meet and a number of ‘personal bests’ were recorded.

Congratulations to the U10 boys who came 2nd overall and the U10 girls came 3rd overall. Impressively every relay team progressed through the heats to the final.

Combining all the ages together St Peter's were placed in 3rd position overall - an excellent achievement.
