was a remarkable year in the life of St Peter’s Hospice and it ended with the opening of our brand new Inpatient Unit on 26 November. The previous month had been spent ensuring everyone involved was trained and familiarised with the new build and its facilities and it is to the great credit of our staff that they had all 15 beds open and able to admit patients within two weeks. What we have achieved in 2018 is the result of the efforts of everyone who works for, volunteers for, or supports the Hospice and I hope everyone feels very proud of it.

We are not however now going to rest on our laurels, but continue to expand and develop in 2019. We have plans to increase what we provide to our patients and families, especially in the community. We must also be imaginative and innovative in our commercial area in order to fund these enhancements and enable St Peter’s Hospice to be ambitious in what we do for our community. I hope you will want to be part of the St Peter’s story and continue to support the Hospice.

St Peter’s Hospice - For Patients, Families and Bristol

The Bristol Men’s Walk Saturday 16 march 2019 Pie, pint, rugby and a ramble…sounds like the perfect day! Dust off your boots for a six mile sponsored walk and watch the final Six Nations game at the finish line while raising vital funds for Bristol’s only adult hospice.

Join us on Saturday 16 March 2019 for The Bristol Men’s Walk. Starting from the SouthBank Centre in Bedminster, the circular route begins along the river path before winding up to Leigh Woods and through Ashton Court. You’ll be welcomed back at the SouthBank Centre at the end of the walk with hot pies, cold pints and England v Scotland on the big screen!

With sons, fathers, brothers and friends all taking part, it’s a brilliant day out for everyone. Your entry fee, £18 for adults and £12 for under 18s (minimum age 14 years), covers the cost of the day. Making a personal donation or raising sponsorship will help St Peter’s Hospice continue to care for patients.

As a way of saying thank you to the Hospice for caring for his Dad Shaun, Ross Matthews and a group of 15 others all signed up to The Bristol Men’s Walk last year and raised a staggering £4,000!

“There was a very warm welcome when we arrived on the day of the walk. Everyone was there walking together to support the Hospice. The walk was muddy at parts and we all had fun getting stuck in and helping each other out. It was great to return from the walk to share a pie and pint with my best friend and watch the rugby together.

“I was truly overwhelmed and humbled that we were walking as a group in honour of my Dad and supporting the Hospice.

There is a fantastic buzz on the day and feeling of accomplishing something together. I plan to take part in the walk in March and continue to do so every year.”

New Inpatient Unit opens Thank you to the supporters of St Peter's Hospice, the people of Bristol and our surrounding communities – you did it! By raising £2.53m you have helped us to build a 21st Century Hospice for Bristol.

We believe patients should be treated with dignity and compassion, and be close to those they love, especially during their final days and hours. Thanks to you, our new Inpatient Unit is now as excellent as the care given by our clinical staff and will meet the complex needs of patients.

The Bristol Post

Flying high at Bristol Balloon Fiesta We were delighted to be chosen as the Official Charity Partner for the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta. The Fiesta saw our own balloon take to the skies above Bristol and raised £11,000.

The Bristol Post kept our Room to Care Appeal alive in the hearts and minds of the people of Bristol over the past year by running a story on the Hospice every week, and raised a total of £19,300!

Charity Ball Fundraising Finale

Bradley Stoke couple Terry James and Mike Checkley transformed their home into a Christmas wonderland and raised over £11,000!

Hospice supporter Claire Filmer fundraised for our Appeal this year and rounded it off with a fabulous finale – a Charity Ball in September, raising an amazing £11,000 for the Appeal!

Orchestra ditch drink to raise funds

Pegasus Motor Club Road Rally

All 70 players of the Bristol Symphony Orchestra took part in our Lose the Booze campaign in January in support of the Appeal and raised a total of £1,500.

In September, 60 classic cars took part in a car run organised by Bristol Pegasus Motor. The event raised £2,600!

Joanna Lumley sparkles as host of our Ruby Dinner Actress Joanna Lumley hosted our 40th anniversary Ruby Dinner. The event raised £110,000. “It was such a sensational night,” said Joanna. “We want everybody in Bristol to know that hospices are places of joy and hope and love and comfort.”

Our Shops A total of £37,365 was raised through our shops. Area Manager, Lou Merchant-Locke wore a different pair of Crocs every day for a month and raised a whopping £1,745!

Thank you to everyone who helped us to reach our Appeal target. From head shaves to bake sales, wing walking to running, you came together to acheive something truly remarkable!

What’s coming up...

Hospice Gardens The gardens have always been at the heart of the Hospice and a special place for our patients and their families. The building works of last year had a huge impact on our gardens and now we are working hard to complete the landscaping of the new gardens complete with a courtyard and sensory areas which will provide lots of beautiful flora and fauna.

Bristol Balloon Fiesta

St Peter’s Hospice is proud to be supporting Bristol Pride this year. The Chief Executive of Bristol Pride, Daryn Carter, visited the Hospice in January to find out more about the work we do.

Bristol Balloon Fiesta is back this summer from 7 to 11 August and we are so excited to be the Official Charity Partner once again!

Johnny Flanagan, Head of Supporter Relations at the Hospice, said: "It was wonderful to have Daryn visit the Hospice recently. We are really excited to be participating in Bristol Pride on Saturday 13 July.”

Patient story “The Hospice is about living, enjoying the here and now.”

When mum of four Nuki Howell was diagnosed with terminal cancer she didn’t know where to turn. An active grandmother, her diagnosis came as a massive shock to Nuki and her family, but with St Peter’s Hospice support, Nuki has continued living her life.

Nuki, 61, from Southmead, had been going to the doctor feeling unwell and was initially diagnosed as being anaemic. But following continued tests, she was diagnosed with lung and lymph node cancer – and given just 12 to 18 months to live.

Three years later and Nuki is living life to the full. Alongside the love and support of her family, Nuki is being supported by St Peter’s Hospice.

Nuki met Community Nurse Specialist Julie Heaton who has been by her side ever since to support her through her journey.

“Julie is always on the end of the phone.

Obviously there is a serious side to what we talk about, but we always have a laugh when she pops around for a cup of tea to check on me and my family.

“There is always someone to talk to. It’s not about the illness, it’s about you.”

“She has been a real support and has become like a member of our own family. My perception of going into a hospice was about dying, but I couldn’t

have been more wrong. The Hospice is about living, enjoying the here and now.

Julie’s role is wide ranging, she said: “I know that there is nothing I can do about what is going to happen, but I can help that person feel better and let them know they are not on their own.”

Nuki, who has been a Day Hospice patient for the last year, says the nurses at the Hospice have been a ‘lifeline’ for her and her family.

“I take each day as it comes. I was given 12 to 18 months three years ago and I am still here. The staff at the Hospice are amazing and should be celebrated. Along with my family they are helping me live my life whatever the future holds.”

Tour de Bristol with kind permission of Amaury Sport Organisation

Saturday 6 April Register online at tourdebristol.co.uk Registration costs just £25 for 40k, £30 for 65k and £35 for 100k distances.

Tour de Bristol is back by popular demand for 2019 and is gearing up to raise more vital funds for St Peter’s Hospice. Last year’s event sold out well in advance for Bristol’s biggest charity cycling challenge – so get ready to get on your bike!

Taking place on Saturday 6 April, riders can take their pick from 40k, 65k and 100k routes for the sponsored bike ride, taking in the stunning surrounds of South Gloucestershire and the Wye Valley.

This year’s event will start and finish from the Centre of Sport, UWE, Frenchay Campus in North Bristol. With over 1,000 participants, join us for what promises to be another epic ride!

Tour de Bristol this year will once again be supported by Rapid Relief Team (RRT). The Team has supported the ride from the beginning, supplying snacks and refreshments for our cyclists at our three feed stations. Inspired by community spirit and the gift of giving, RRT offers quality catering assistance to charitable and government organisations.

This year, we’re celebrating 10 years of wonder women and superstars walking to raise vital funds for St Peter’s Hospice with a special edition of The Midnight Walk and a superhero theme!

Choose from a 5 or 10 mile sponsored walk and experience Bristol’s famous landmarks in a completely different light. See the lights shine on the Clifton Suspension Bridge, hear the lions roar at Bristol Zoo and watch the SS Great Britain glisten on the harbour!

Starting from Ashton Gate Stadium, join us with your family and friends from 9pm as we get the party started with performers, party anthems, face painting and all that glitters, before sending you out in the night on your sponsored walk.

Over the past 10 years, The Midnight Walk has raised over £1 million! As this is a fundraising event, we’re here to help every superhero that signs up to raise as much as possible for the Hospice through sponsorship. Patient story Making Tamara’s dream come true Being pregnant with your first child should be the happiest moment of your life. But when Tamara was 30 weeks pregnant, she was given the most devastating news that would change her life forever. With help from the Hospice, Tamara has lived life again, achieving a lifelong dream.

Tamara, 38, lives in Bristol with her husband Jack. In 2016 Tamara fell pregnant and she and Jack were preparing to start a new chapter as a family. However, during her pregnancy, Tamara was given the heart-breaking news she had cancer and would need lifesaving emergency surgery.

Tamara said: "To go from thinking you were being sick because you were pregnant to being told you had cancer was just incomprehensible."

“Finding the right help and support means you can have a much better quality of life despite everything that is going on.”

She underwent a major procedure to remove most of her large bowel and a full hysterectomy as the cancer had spread to her ovaries. Her son Ollie was born nine weeks early by caesarean section and was transferred to the Neo Natal Intensive Care Unit at hospital.

"I couldn't even pick up Ollie safely. It

was relentless and Jack had to do everything. All I wanted was go to baby groups and look after my baby like normal new mums.”

When Ollie came home, Tamara started intensive chemotherapy of two different drugs but was forced to stop one due to severe side effects. In August 2017 scans showed the cancer had returned and there was nothing else the hospital could do.

Tamara went on to seek second opinions and started another round of chemotherapy. Initially results were positive but in April 2018, the cancer had once again started to progress.

Tamara had already been referred to St Peter's Hospice for support.

Hospice was an incredibly difficult thing, I felt like the medical establishment had given up on me as there was nothing more they could do. It was such a scary time."

“The care and support they have given me has allowed me to get out and live my life again."

Since being referred to the Hospice, Tamara has had the support of the community nurse specialist team.

"The staff at the Hospice have really turned things around for me. By the time I contacted them I was at a stage where I was being really sick every day.

The nurses sorted out my pain relief and enabled me to feel better, so much so that we even managed a family holiday to France in June.

"Having a cancer diagnosis is an awful experience for anyone to go through,

but finding the right help and support means you can have a much better quality of life despite everything that is going on. The care and support they have given me has allowed me to get out and live my life again."

In September 2018, Tamara flew in the skies above Bristol in a hot air balloon and achieved a lifelong dream of hers, organised by the Hospice with the help of Bailey Balloons.

Tamara said: "It was wonderful, a dream come true. It was so serene and peaceful in the balloon. It's always been a lifelong dream of mine to go up in one.

"It was wonderful to go up in the balloon over Bristol. Just for that hour our troubles seemed to disappear. The flight is something we will always treasure and it has allowed us to make some special memories.

"Thank you to the Hospice and Jo and Clive Bailey for making a dream come true."

In the Community 2018 was an exciting year for fundraising. So many of you helped us to raise an incredible £2.53 million for the Room to Care appeal, which allowed us to complete the build of our new Inpatient Unit. We are so proud of what’s been achieved, but we know we couldn’t have done it without all of you who volunteered at events and held fundraisers. We now look to the year ahead as we continue to raise funds for the day to day running costs of the Hospice, which will allow us to care for more than 2,200 patients and their family members each year.

This year, how would you like to contribute? We are always keen to talk to individuals, schools, clubs and community groups about how they can support their local hospice. From bake sales to marathons, charity dinners to concerts, everyone can find a way to support St Peter’s this year. Arrange your own fundraising event or challenge...

It’s that time of year again; don your aprons, pre-heat the oven… Ready, Steady, Bake is back!

This March we invite you to get the recipe books out and bake up a storm, all to raise funds for your local hospice.

Simply get together with friends, family or colleagues and host a coffee morning, bake sale or tea party – it couldn’t be easier! Whatever you choose to do, be it big or small, the money you raise will help continue the care we give to patients and families.

The Hospice is thrilled to have long-time supporter Emma Wood running for us in the Virgin Money London Marathon on Sunday 28 April. Emma was inspired to start running after her husband Steve died at the Hospice in 2015.

Emma said: “My family and I felt we received the best possible care and support during that time and after, so I want to run in Steve’s memory to continue to raise funds and awareness for Bristol’s Hospice.”

Emma is also a member of the Sole Parents group which meets once a week for widowed parents. Emma said: “I also want to run in memory of all my new friends’ spouses that were supported by the Hospice. Running the London Marathon will be a challenge, but remembering all those who are no

Fundraising 26 October 3 November 2019 St Peter’s Hospice is heading to the Great Wall of China for our first overseas fundraising trip – and we want you to join us!

Have you ever dreamed about trekking the Great Wall of China and visiting a country full of rich culture? If so, sign up today to our China Challenge and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime as we explore one of China’s most significant landscapes, entwined in beautiful mountains and engulfed in history!

Taking place from 26 October to 3 November 2019, this demanding but rewarding challenge will see you trek approximately 36km over five days taking in extraordinary sights at each stage. What’s more, you’ll even help repair the Great Wall! On completion you’ll travel back to Beijing and have the chance to explore some of the main attractions including the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and the Temple of Heaven.

Ella Tallack has signed up to the challenge to walk in memory of her mum Christine who was cared for by the Hospice. After being supported by the Community Nurse Specialist team, Christine passed away surrounded by her family in July 2016 in the Inpatient Unit.

"Losing mum made me realise that life can change in an instant and that's when I thought I should go for it and grab every opportunity that comes my way.

“The fact that mum was cared for so wonderfully by the Hospice is a compelling incentive to get involved.

I’m keen to see the world and thought what better way to do so than raising money for this amazing charity at the same time.”

Going bananas for the Hospice!

Bristol Fruit Sales have been supporting the Hospice by providing bananas for our event participants for many years.

We’ve had a rough count up and have worked out that more than 10,000 bananas have been donated, which is a total of 1 million calories consumed by our walkers, runners and cyclists – thank you!

The sky’s the limit for Mercer Jelf Five fearless fundraisers from Mercer Jelf, Chipping Sodbury completed a skydive at Honiton Airfield raising a magnificent total of £15,000 for the Room To Care Appeal. They all had a great time and would encourage other people to sign up for this once in a lifetime experience. Julie Jelf comments “It was a memorable and amazing experience that we all loved made more special by the amount of money raised for a worthy cause”

Barclays boots made for walking!

Barclays Real Estate Teams across the country climbed a total of 5 peaks, crossed 12 bridges and walked a total of 45 miles in their areas, fundraising and remembering colleague and friend Jamie Burke who was cared for by St Peter’s Hospice. Everyone has been staggered that with matched funding the team has managed to achieve fundraising totals beyond everybody’s expectations. A grand total of £33,725.00 has been donated to St Peter’s Hospice and we want to say a huge thank you and well done to everyone involved.

Fundraising Group News A fond farewell to the Chew Valley Support Group After 11 years of tireless fundraising for St Peter’s Hospice, the Chew Valley Support Group have hung up their collection tins and retired. Their dedication and support has been unwavering and whilst we are very sad to say goodbye, we are hugely grateful for all that they have done for the Hospice and for patients and families across Bristol.

The group have organised countless fundraisers, including quizzes, balls, bake sales, tea parties and lunches. They have also supported several hospice events including our annual Christmas Market. In total, they have raised over £104,000 – a phenomenal amount! We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to every single person that has been involved with the Chew Valley Support Group over the years. You will be missed!

Portishead Fundraisers

St Peter’s Hospice knitting group, Plain & Purl, made their Christmas Market debut in 2018 – and what a success it was! They made over £800 on the day, with all sorts of knitted goodies being sold. The colourful octopi proved especially popular!

Back in November, long-standing supporters Colin and Jenny Wring organised the fourth annual David Salt Big Band concert in support of the Hospice.

The concert was a huge success once again, raising the fantastic sum of £1385.61. Colin was also hard at work throughout December, kindly selling tickets for our Christmas Raffle. In total he sold an incredible 48 books – that’s a total of 720 tickets! A huge thank you to everyone who attended the concert or bought a raffle ticket.

Hospice patient and lifelong Bristol City fan Marcus and his family received a visit from two Bristol legends – former captain and all-round Bristol City hero Scott Murray and Broadchurch actor Joe Sims.

Bristol Bears Rugby players Nick Fenton-Wells, Jack Lam and Joe Joyce visited the Hospice and met patients, staff, and volunteers. Nick Fenton-Wells said: “It was an absolute pleasure to visit the Hospice. Thank you for having us and giving us a tiny glimpse of the incredible work you do in the Bristol community.”

The draw for the Grand Christmas Raffle took place on 19 December and we were delighted to present our first prize winner with a cheque for £5,000! We also had lots more prizes to give away just in time for Christmas.
