is exactly that, the announcement of, not a cure instantly available to all.

We must not expect that normality will return just yet. But there is hope, light dawning on the horizon, light in the darkness – light coming into the world this Christmastime.

As Stuart Johnson reflects on the Advent week of ‘Peace’, it makes me think of all the times I write ‘peaceful Christmas and joyful new year’ in Christmas cards, and how this year when we wish people a healthy and happy new year how much more that will mean. No longer simply words that we write, almost without thinking. Do we, in fact, stop to pray for each recipient as we write those words? Perhaps this year we will.

We also need to hope and trust in the words “Behold I am doing a new thing, do you not perceive it?” We rejoice to return once more to worship together in our church buildings, but we remain committed to our online and phone provision, and we are just beginning to see some sustained interest from people who are following along at the edges which is a good reminder at Christmastime when the message of Christ’s coming for all people did reach far and wide, and drew people from all walks of life to him. Our inclusivity and welcome must always reflect this.

I wish you all a joyful and peaceful Christmas – with the deep consciousness that for many it will be one of isolation, anxiety or continued loss. We will this year hold (online and on the phone) a service sometimes called Blue Christmas, sometimes called the Longest Night – a more reflective hearing of the Christmas story in recognition that not everyone will be anticipating Christmas with joy.

We know that welcome is one of the things that people find when they join us, but with so many people having suffered loneliness and hopelessness this year, perhaps the message “come to me all you who are carrying heavy burdens and I will give you rest” will echo through our community alongside our welcome.

We do hope for a peaceful and joyful Christmas, whatever our situation.

We need to hope and trust in the words of Christ himself and at Christmas the words of the Angels, “do not be afraid”, even as we head into the flu season proper and know that the announcement of a vaccine 3

As we return first to limited number worship and later in the Spring to some sort of ‘normality’, you will all smile at the knowledge of my dislike of the word (that has not changed despite our longing for ‘normality’ this year). Let us attend to those words “behold I am doing a new thing” – as we delight in the coming of Christ this Christmas, we look forward to the future, to the challenges but also to the joys of what being church might be in this coming season.

Hopefully, through our contact calls, garden visits and whatsapp groups, people have got to know each other a little better and our life as a church will more deeply reflect that communal life we share in Christ, and that this too will be attractive as our love shines out and draws in.

As the wise men bring their gifts to Jesus this new year, we too will be bringing anew all of our gifts to him and to his church. ‘Back to normal’ will be ‘forward to the future’ and as the talented people who have been leading us in worship and prayer and care online/by phone continue to do so face to face, I am excited by the possibilities glimmering amid the gloom. I truly believe the Spirit will be with us. Do you not perceive it?

They will include joyful efforts to reconnect back out in our community – restarting Bertie’s and planning and launching a baby and toddler group for St Peter’s. Restarting Friends Together when they no longer need to be friends apart, and growing that too. We have lots of bookings for 2021 and 2022 weddings, and so we will welcome those couples and many baptisms as soon as we are able to. All alongside the individuals who over the last few months have felt the need to connect or reconnect with their faith, and found or find their way in to our worshipping community.

This comes with my fervent prayer, not just for a peaceful and joyful Christmas, but a new year full of health, happiness and hopefully, eventually, hugs.

God of light and life, give us hope as we wait for your coming again. When we are tempted to be grateful to have found you while others are still lost, send us out into the darkness, in search of those who need you most. To tell them, ‘do not be afraid’ and, ‘come, those of you who are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.’

Underpinning this will be the deep joy of having shared together, even when apart, our lives and anxieties and hopes and prayers as we have shared in 4

SNIPPETS, STORIES AND SOUNDBITES Most families experience some form of separation whether for employment purposes or relocation, but this year has been something else. Lockdown has necessitated separation in a way that no other has on such a scale for many years. Very sad situations have emerged where families have not been able to see loved ones for final goodbyes, or caring hugs. People returning from abroad have had to isolate for most of their leave/visit etc, sometimes in designated places such as hotels some distance away. Our own New Zealand family had intended to visit this Christmas, but having booked their plane tickets in February and even if they had been allowed, would have had to spend most of their time isolating. (Why isolate here when they can be in NZ in high summer?)

And what about Christmas cards?

The last time separations were necessary on such a vast scale, was probably during World War II, the end of which we have been commemorating this year, with VE Day and VJ Day. My dad was in the Royal Marines and, as I was born in 1940, he missed a lot of my early years. However, the troops were given air graph materials on which to write letters to their loved ones.

Each one was carefully vetted by the military censors, then photographed and somehow transmitted by radio signals, and finally by post. (The nearest thing to our emails!). Dad used to draw pictures on his for mam, other family members and for me. He was also asked to draw them for his fellow service men. I know they may not show up very well as they are over 75 years old, but I am including a couple of the pictures he drew for me, I think for Christmas 1943 from Sicily, as substitute Christmas cards, and they are pictures that I shall always treasure.

The Lockdown Nativity The greatest story retold for a socially distanced world

Scene 1 : An angel appears Angel: Greetings to you, Mary – you who are highly favoured by the most high God. Mary: Who are You? Where are you? You’re the first visitor I’ve had since March!

Angel: I am Gabriel - a messenger sent from God. Do not be afraid. You may find it difficult to see me as I am speaking with you from the next room. You see, it is now impossible to have a face to face conversation when these Nazareth kitchens aren’t even 2 metres wide.

Mary: Yes, I understand that… What do you mean with the highly favoured bit?

Angel: Well, this is really exciting news… You know that there are stories in the Bible that point to a great King who will save the people from consequences of all the bad things they have done? So that God and humans can be reconciled?

Mary: Yes, I know the stories. But it doesn’t look like that is ever going to happen..

Angel: The truth is ..it is going to happen… and you have been specially selected to become the mother of that child.

Mary: Who, me? Mary? Are you sure you’ve got the right address? I’m not even married!

Angel: No, pretty sure it’s you.. Let me check… You do have an Aunt Elizabeth, don’t you? A lovely lady who hasn’t been able to have any children?

Mary: Yes…so…

Angel: Well, guess what? She is going to have a child too! Isn’t it wonderful? You could go and visit her to check it out. Actually, on second thoughts…safest not to do that, she’s up in the North East. I can set up a zoom call if you’d like, though!

Mary: Elizabeth…wow, that’s amazing. …. So it is me who has been chosen?

Angel: Absolutely. It is you that has been chosen. It will be the power of God that will cause you to fall pregnant, so the child that you will carry will be known as the Son of God. Mary: Wow, that’s pretty massive… and frankly extremely scary. But I know that God is good and kind, and that this world so needs a saviour… So, please tell him that I am willing to play my part in making this happen.

Angel: Great, that is what we were hoping you would say. Take care. Stay safe!

Mary: I’m not sure that I should feel particularly safe. But somehow, I know that this is from God. And this is the right thing to do. I must tell Joseph.

Scene 2 Joseph’s house Mary: Joseph! Joseph! I’ve got something really exciting to tell you Joseph: Woah. Hold on Mary… calm down…face mask on… We are not in the same bubble yet!

Mary: Oh Yes Sorry….. Actually can we do this outside….Its not the sort of conversation I want with a face-mask on

Scene 3: outside Joseph’s house Joseph: So what is this all about? ‘cos Im not having another conversation about the wedding arrangements. I know it’s been postponed 3 times already, but we both decided that we wanted to have all 53 guests and so there is no chance of being able to have the ceremony before Christmas.

Mary: What’s Christmas?

Joseph: No idea… never mind…. So what is the news.

Mary: I’m going to be pregnant!

Joseph: Yes… I understand you’re a bit keen… and I’m rugged and handsome …but as I was saying… we are going to do things properly.. Maybe sometime after Easter?

Mary : What’s Easter?

Joseph: No idea…never mind…so you were saying?

Mary: Oh yes…..I’ve had a visitor!

Joseph: A visitor?

Mary: Yes a visitor!

Joseph: A real human being calling round?

Mary: Well I’m not too sure about whether he was human or not. I think he was an angel. Anyway, He was in the living room and I was in the kitchen… You see I do try and follow the rules…. And he said that I was going to become pregnant by the power of God’s Holy Spirit and become the mother of the Son of God. Joseph: What!

Mary: So anyways I went round the chemist and got this kit and you see that little blue line?

Joseph: I think so… what?

Mary: So it is true. I’m going to have God’s child.

Joseph: That’s unbelievable!

Mary: I knew you’d be pleased!

Joseph: Pleased… Pleased! Mary how could you?... Here’s me following the rules and staying 2 meters from everyone… and you are pregnant! That doesn’t happen with social distancing in any books that I’ve read. You’ve really upset me. Now go away.

Scene 4 Mary and Joseph watch TV On TV set Reporter: Sorry to interrupt you there but now we can go live to Jerusalem as we have the daily briefing from the Roman governor Quirinius of Syria Quirinius: Citizens of Judea. You will be aware that recent events have been costing your Roman superiors a great deal of money and that the spread of uprisings have meant we are going to have to introduce a series of local lockdowns. Furthermore we have had to upgrade our armour or as we call it our personal protective equipment. To meet the rising costs of this PPE we are introducing a new TAX & TRACE app which each of you must apply for in the towns of your birth. You have a week to get there….

Or else…. Well let’s say the consequences will be pretty severe. Get packing … get paying.

Thank you very much. Hail Caesar! Yes I’ll take some questions Breaking news Temple incident – Zechariah breaks his silence Joseph ( switches off TV): You know what Mary. It’s pretty horrible living in this kind of Roman lockdown. If it wasn’t for that angel visiting me in a dream I would have thought that the end of the world had come. But it seems that I’ve got you.. You’ve got this baby, and we have to hope that the world is going to get better. But until then it looks like you and me have a trip to go on.

Mary: Where to?

Joseph: To my home town… Bethlehem Mary: Bethlehem… I thought you were from Cleadon?

Joseph: It may look like the Nook but for the purposes of this story… lets call it Bethlehem. The name means House of bread in Hebrew- And there is Greggs on Prince Edward Road so it is basically the same place.

Mary: If you say so Joe 12

Scene 5: The Nook

Joseph: Well Bethlehem has certainly changed since I was here 20 years ago. I hardly recognise the place.

Mary (very pregnant): I feel a little out of place myself. I had no idea it was such a big town! Mind you I had no idea I’d ever be such a big woman.

This baby could come at any time. Joe, don’t you you it is oddly quiet considering there must be hundreds of people here for the census?.

Surely they haven’t imposed a curfew? Those Romans!

Joseph: It does seem strange… Lets try the local inn- Here’s one- I’m sure I’ve seen an ad for it: apparently we will wake up wonderful !

Scene 6: The Old Ship Inn Joseph: Excuse me. Do you have a room for the night? We are here for the census and have travelled many miles- and my wife is exhausted. Also…Do you still do those breakfasts with the help yourself to all the sausages..and those mini chocolate muffins?

Receptionist: Really sorry but the lockdown restrictions mean that we cannot accommodate you unless you book online- It is to comply with the Roman Tax and Trace registration regulations.

Joseph: Please you can see that my wife is greatly with child.

Mary: Really sorry. Look we are from out of town. I feel like the baby could pop at any moment. Is there anything you can do?

Receptionist: So sorry all the rooms need to be thoroughly cleaned before we can release them. I can’t do anything for you……. Unless….. no….silly idea Joseph: Go on Receptionist: We do have a garage… You could use that.

Mary: A garage! That is unexpected!

Joseph: The nice lady is trying to be helpful- we need somewhere!. We’ll take it. Thanks. Come along donkey!

Scene 7- Shepherds Shep 1: My its cold up here tonight.

Shep 2: You should be used to this by now Shep 1: Not really. I’ve not been in the job long. I was in musical theatre before being put on furlough. Since then I‘ve retrained as an agricultural management consultant.

Shep 2: You mean you’re a shepherd…

Shep 1: Ok… So I’m a shepherd….. Not sure I’ve got the hang of it really.

These sheep aren’t the most appreciative audience are they.

Shep 2: If you are looking for spectacle, lights music and drama then I’m afraid pal you’ve re-trained for entirely the wrong job. Nothing like that ever happens up here.

Shep 1: Well if that’s the case…. Then who is that?

Angel 1: Do not be afraid. I bring glad tidings of great joy which will be for all the people. Tonight for one night only the angelic choir bring to you the best news story in the history of the world. A new King who will be saviour of the world is to be born. God is arriving as a human being to usher in a new kingdom of love and peace…where suffering and pain have a place no more Hallelujah

Scene 8 - Wise men Visit Herod in the palace WM 1: Sir we are three wise men who have travelled from the East many miles following a star to find the place where the new king is to be born.

WM 2: We have journeyed across the desert passing through other realms WM 3: And since arriving here we have successfully self-isolated for 14 days WM 1: So may we see the new King sir?

Mayor: New King! New King! I’m the leader here.

WM 1: No we are sure he is somewhere here. we have followed the star that has lead us here Mayor: (consulting phone/laptop): Well apparently the new child is to be born in Bethlehem. If you do find him, please do come back and let me know.. I’d love to worship him too.

Scene 9 – Wise men on Prince Edward Road WM 1: Are you sure this is right?

WM 2: Well according to Herod’s advisors the baby was to be born in Bethlehem WM 1: And you are sure this is Bethlehem WM 2: Well look – There is the Greggs on Prince Edward Road so we must be getting close WM 3: I’ve just had a thought WM 1: What?

WM 3: We are going to see a new king right?

WM 1: Yes that’s right WM 3: Well we need to take presents WM 1: I thought you had the presents!

WM 3: I haven’t got presents..what shall we do?

WM2: Don’t worry guys… I’ve got a plan (points to supermarket) 17

Scene 10 - 3WM in Sainsbury’s WM 1: (look at shopping list) Excuse me we are looking for myrrh Shop assist: Myrrh? I’m not sure I’ve even heard of myrrh… is it skincare?

Manager: Myrrh- aisle 5- between the gold and the frankincense WM 2: Brilliant. Thank you very much WM 3: Excellent. Now to find this garage

Carol – We three kings?

Scene 12 – The garage Joseph: Why is the world so unfair. This isn’t what I’d hoped for my life. I didn’t ask for this. Stuck in a garage the smell of diesel and petrol. Taken from my job, taken from my town, new taxes to pay just as this new child comes into the world. Where is God…. Where are you God? Abandoning me. Leaving me all alone in this world with so much pain and frustration and disappointment.. where are you? (sound of baby crying- Joseph turns.)

Scene 13 – The garage Shep 1: Hello. I know it’s the middle of the night but we had to come Shep 2: We have been told by angels that the saviour of the world has been born tonight Shep 1: And I am so thrilled and excited to be here. It makes me want to burst into song.

Shep 2: NO! Shep 1: Maybe a little dance?

Shep 2: (hard stare) We just wanted to say what a privilege it is to be here knowing that God does care about the world – and to enter it in such vulnerability- alongside the poor and struggling shepherds like us Shep 1: Well, like him… I’m an actor really.. little baby…isn’t he gorgeous…. bravo…

Shep 2: We should go.

Shep 1: Ohh hang on… Here come some likely fellows with flamboyant costumes. I may know them Shep 2: No we need to go and give them some space. 2 metres from me and preferably 2 kilometers from you Shep 1: Well really… how rude…..

Scene 14 Enter wise men Mary: Hello. Come on in. this is clearly a very public maternity ward.

Honestly I’ve seen so many people today that I’m not sure if I feel like the queen or like someone about to be arrested for violating government guidelines.

WM 1: Special and most blessed lady- we your humble servants have travelled many months and crossed many realms for the joy of being present for this moment WM 2: Don’t forget the 14 days self-isolation WM 3: We are foreigners- outsiders.. and yet we are aware that this special new child will be the one who will break down barriers of prejudice and begin a new movement of peace and joy.

WM 1: So we come and offer these gifts to you. Gold the mark of a true king WM 2: And I bring frankincense. To symbolise the presence of one who is from God WM 3: And I bring myrrh. Ointment for death for the great king who will bring life 20

Joseph: Thank you so much for these. It has been a strange and wonderful night WM 2: And you can even keep the handy carrier bag.

WM 1: If this king is who we think he is‌ then this night will be remembered for many years to come. For he is King of all the world.
