Come 4th Sunday!

The Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost St. Peter’s Episcopal Church Glenside, Pennsylvania Oct. 22, 2023 10:00 A.M.

About Come 4th Sunday At St. Peter’s the fourth Sunday of the month is Come 4th Sunday. It’s a time when we come forth in new ways to celebrate being the Body of Christ. Children come forth to read Scripture and lead prayer, and to get a better look at what’s going on. Families come forth to take on new roles. New members come forth for a blessing. We all come forth to receive Jesus in the Eucharist, and we all go forth as his disciples – with God’s help. The Scripture translations are from the resource God’s Word, my Voice, by Lyn Zill Briggs, Church Publishing: 2015. They are written in a way that is easy for young readers to proclaim and understand. Our opening prayers are from the supplemental liturgical materials in Enriching Our Worship 1. Our choir will lead us in songs that are simple to sing but full of meaning. When the words aren’t written in the leaflet, we use the Blue Hymnal; the thin green Wonder, Love and Praise Book (WLP), or the thin blue With One Voice (WOV) hymnal. And you can even color the front page of the leaflet. Crayons are available in the basket in the narthex. All ages welcome. Infants, toddlers and their families can hang out in our soft space on the right side of the worship space, which welcomes soft toys, soft activities and soft voices. Wiggles are also welcome. Overall, this is a great opportunity to ask yourself, how can I come forth to serve Jesus in new ways this year?

Gathering in Joy Prelude: Praise for the Morning

Arr. Lani Smith

Opening Hymn: WOV 670, Go Down Moses The Opening Acclamation Presider: Blessed be our God People: For ever and ever. Amen.

EOW 1

The Presider says to the people Presider: God be with you. People: And also with you. Presider: Let us pray. Collect of the Day Dear God, you have revealed your glory to the whole world through your son Jesus Christ. Protect all the merciful things you have done, and strengthen us, your church, so we can share the Good News of your love with the whole world; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Listening for God’s Word The First Reading- Exodus 33: 12-23 Reader: A Reading from the Book of Exodus Moses was talking with God. "You told me to lead these people but I can't do this alone. If you care about me the way you say you do, please give me some direction, so that I might know you as well as you know me and that these people can know you too." God said, "I will go with you. I will give you support and let you rest." “Good," said Moses. "These people will be special; your chosen people. Will you show me your glory?" God said, "I will make sure you can see all of my goodness. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and kind to whom I will be kind. But you can't see my face and live. How about this? Go stand on that rock, and while my goodness and glory pass by there, I will put you in a crack in the rock and cover you with my hand until 3

I've passed. Then I will take my hand away. You can see my back. but you won't see my face.” The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God Psalm- Psalms 99 The Response to the psalm is: We will let everyone know that you are a great God! You are the best, God! You are the King. See the people shake. Watch the ground tremble and hear it rumble. You are the best and all the people know it. All: We will let everyone know that you are a great God! Here is what the people say to you, “O mighty King, you treat us fairly, And everyone comes before just the same.” We see how great you are and want to serve you. You are holy and you amaze us. All: We will let everyone know that you are a great God! When your priests called your name, you answered them. You talked to them from the cloud. They walked behind you and followed your path. You answered them, and you forgave them, And made them see what they had done wrong. All: We will let everyone know that you are a great God! The Second Reading – Thessalonians 1:1-10 Reader: A Reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Thessalonians Here's a letter from Paul and Silvanus and Timothy: Grace, everyone at the church in Thessalonica! 4

We are always thanking God for you, and praying for you, remembering your faith and hard work of love. God has chosen you, and given you the gospel and the Holy Spirit along with it. We hope you know that we have worked hard to support you. You have used us as examples to follow how we love the Lord. In spite of being pushed around by people due to your faith, you have been strong and joyful and the Holy Spirit has allowed you to be a good example for others. People all over have heard all about your faith, and about how you welcomed us and are serving a living God, and waiting for God's Son Jesus to return to us. The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God Gospel Hymn: WOV 612, Halle, Halle, Hallelujah The Gospel – Matthew 22:15-22 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew All: Glory to you, Lord Christ. The Pharisees wanted to trap Jesus into saying something they didn't like. They sent some of their people to follow him. “Teacher,” they said, “We know you are a sincere follower of God. Tell us this, then: is it against God's law to pay taxes to the emperor of Rome?” Jesus knew they were out to get him. He said, “Why are you setting me up, you hypocrites?” They gave him a coin that he asked to see. He showed it to them and said, “Whose head is this on the coin, and what is his title?” They answered, “It's the emperor's head on that coin.” So Jesus said, "So give to the emperor the things that are his. Give to God the things that belong to God.” “Wow-I guess he told us, didn't he?” They were amazed, had nothing to say after that, and they left him. The Gospel of the Lord. All: Praise to you, Lord Christ The Sermon

The Rev. Barbara Ballenger

The Nicene Creed

BCP 358

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, 5

eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the People, Form VI

BCP 392

Intercessor and People pray responsively In peace, we pray to you, Lord God. For all people in their daily life and work; For our families, friends, and neighbors, and for those who are alone. For this community, the nation, and the world; For all who work for justice, freedom, and peace. For the just and proper use of your creation; For the victims of hunger, fear, injustice, and oppression. 6

For all who are in danger, sorrow, or any kind of trouble; For those who minister to the sick, the friendless, and the needy. For the peace and unity of the Church of God; For all who proclaim the Gospel, and all who seek the Truth. We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons. We pray especially for: Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Daniel, our Bishop; Silvestre, Bishop of Guatemala; Barbara, our clergy; Luis and Juan, our companion clergy in Guatemala; and each one of us in our vocation and Ministry. In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer, we pray for The Anglican Church of Korea. In our companion Diocese of Guatemala, we pray for San Andres and Rev. Presbitero Miguel Salanic. In our own diocese, we pray for the Youth Ministry. For all who serve God in his Church. For the special needs and concerns of this congregation. We remember all those on our parish prayer list, especially Ashley, Anthony, Art, Mary, Jeanné, Robert, Carol, Bob, Marilyn, Sarah, Emily, John, Jack, Tom, Patricia, Bob, Angelo, Joanne, Tim, Shelia, Alice, Laurel, Jennifer, Frank, Roxanne, Leslie, Frank, William, Walter, Barbara, Joan, Greg, Bert, Lynn, Greg, the Memba Family, the Gregory Family and those we name now…Hear us Lord; For your mercy is great. We thank you, Lord, for all the blessings of this life, especially remembering today our parish family, our own friends and families, and all other blessings we name now... We will exalt you, O God our King; And praise your Name for ever and ever. We pray in penitence for our earth, which because of human folly is suffering from heat and flood and fire. Let your way be known upon Earth. Your saving health among all creation. Lord God, as war rages between Israel and Hamas in your Holy Land, we pray for a peaceful end to this devastating conflict. We pray for the dead, the injured, the mourning, and all who are in harm's way. We cry out for an end to all conflict throughout the world, including the ongoing devastation in Ukraine. Fill us with your wisdom and your grace, And make us instruments of your peace. We pray for all who have died, especially for Candido Memba, Rite Gregory and all those we name now.... May all have a place in your eternal kingdom. Lord, let your loving-kindness be upon them; Who put their trust in you. 7

We pray to you also for the forgiveness of our sins. Intercessor and People Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; in your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things done and left undone; and so uphold us by your Spirit that we may live and serve you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Presider: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The Peace Presider: The peace of the Lord be always with you. People: And also with you.

Celebrating Holy Communion Offertory Anthem: Christ is Made the Sure Foundation

Dale Wood St. Peter’s Choir

Presentation Hymn: WOV 765, Jesu, Jesu, Fill Us with Your Love The Great Thanksgiving Presider: People: Presider: People: Presider: People:

The Lord is here. God’s Spirit is with us. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to offer thanks and praise.

Presider: God, you made us, and the world and everything in it. All the good we see comes from you. You have always loved us but people have not always loved you. You sent Jesus to show us how to live and to bring us back to you again. He died for us on the cross so that through your Spirit, we can all be your people. And so with thanks we praise you saying: 8

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Presider: We are here because on the night before he died Jesus shared a meal with his friends. There he took some bread and gave thanks to you, God. He broke it into pieces, and gave it to them. “This is my body,” he said, “Do this, and know that I am with you.” Later, he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to you. He shared it with them, and said “This is my blood, which brings new life. Do this, and know that I am with you.” And so, remembering Jesus, who died, was raised to new life by you, and is alive forever, we are glad to share that life and live in him. Let us proclaim the mystery of our faith: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Presider: Send your Holy Spirit so that this bread and wine can be for us the body and blood of Jesus, and through this food give us strength to live as your people. Help us to care for your world and for each other in the way that Jesus showed us. Until he comes again, with all your people in every time and every land we worship you in songs of everlasting praise. Through him, with him, in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours Almighty Father, forever and ever. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, The Lord’s Prayer

BCP 364

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, 29

but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread The Presider breaks the consecrated bread. A period of silence is kept. Presider: Alleluia! Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People: Therefore, let us keep the feast. Alleluia! Presider: The Gifts of God for the People of God. The Communion of the People Communion Music: Come, O Thou Traveler Unknown
