About Come 4th Sunday At St. Peter’s the fourth Sunday of the month is Come 4th Sunday. It’s a time when we come forth in new ways to celebrate being the Body of Christ. Children come forth to read Scripture and lead prayer, and to get a better look at what’s going on. Families come forth to take on new roles. New members come forth for a blessing. We all come forth to receive Jesus in the Eucharist, and we all go forth as his disciples – with God’s help. The Scripture translations are from the resource God’s Word, my Voice, by Lyn Zill Briggs, Church Publishing: 2015. They are written in a way that is easy for young readers to proclaim and understand. Our opening prayers are from the supplemental liturgical materials in Enriching Our Worship 1. Our choir will lead us in songs that are simple to sing but full of meaning. When the words aren’t written in the leaflet, we use the Blue Hymnal; the thin green Wonder, Love and Praise Book (WLP), or the thin blue With One Voice (WOV) hymnal. And you can even color the front page of the leaflet. Crayons are available in the basket in the narthex. All ages welcome. Infants, toddlers and their families can hang out in our soft space on the right side of the worship space, which welcomes soft toys, soft activities and soft voices. Wiggles are also welcome. Overall, this is a great opportunity to ask yourself, how can I come forth to serve Jesus in new ways this year?

Listening for God’s Word The First Reading – Acts 4:8-13 Reader: A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles ... Peter, full of the Holy Spirit, let loose: “Rulers and leaders of the people, if we have been brought to trial today for helping a sick man, put under investigation regarding this healing, I’ll be completely frank with you—we have nothing to hide. By the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, the One you killed on a cross, the One God raised from the dead, by means of his name this man stands before you healthy and whole. Jesus is ‘the stone you masons threw out, which is now the cornerstone.’ Salvation comes no other way; no other name has been or will be given to us by which we can be saved, only this one.” They couldn’t take their eyes off them—Peter and John standing there so confident, so sure of themselves! Their fascination deepened when they realized these two were laymen with no training in Scripture or formal education. They recognized them as companions of Jesus, but with the man right before them, seeing him standing there so upright—so healed!—what could they say against that? The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Psalm 23 The Lord is my shepherd and I am the sheep. I have everything I need. He takes me to places where I can rest in peaceful, green pastures, and lie down beside deep, still, soothing waters. There is nowhere I can go that the Lord's goodness and mercy isn't already there. It's like living in the Lord's house for ever and ever. The Lord is my shepherd and I am the sheep. What more could I need or want? Second Reading - 1 Peter 5:1-5 Reader: A Reading from the First Letter of Peter I have a special concern for you church leaders. I know what it’s like to be a leader, in on Christ’s sufferings as well as the coming glory. Here’s my concern: that you care for God’s flock with all the diligence of a shepherd. Not because you have to, but because you want to please God. Not calculating what you can get out of it, but acting spontaneously. Not bossily telling others what to do, but tenderly showing them the way. When God, who is the best shepherd of all, comes out in the open with his rule, he’ll see that you’ve done it right and commend you lavishly. And you who are younger must follow your leaders. But all of you, leaders and followers alike, are to be down to earth with each other, for— God has had it with the proud, But takes delight in just plain people. The Word of the Lord. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. The Prayers of the People The response is: Help us to love with your love. Dear Lord, hear our prayer. We pray for people everywhere: Help us to love with your love. We pray for our community, country and world. We pray especially for the victims of war, especially for those in Israel and Palestine, for those in Ukraine, and all who are in harm’s way. Help us to love with your love. We pray for all who gather as your Church, especially our bishops, clergy and all who serve in ministry. Help us to love with your love. We pray for the earth and all your good gifts, especially for the will to address climate catastrophe and help all affected by climate-change related floods, fires and droughts. Help us to love with your love. We pray for those who need kindness and care, especially those who are ill, who are in emotional pain or who are struggling to make ends meet. Help us to love with your love. We pray for those who need your wisdom and grace. Help us to love with your love. We pray for our needs in silence or out loud … (pause for people to share their prayers) We pray for all who have died, especially the Rev. Emily Richards and those we name now... (pause for people to share their prayers) Dear Lord, hear our prayer. And bless your people everywhere. The Lord is here. God’s Spirit is with us. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to offer thanks and praise.
Presider: God, you made us, and the world and everything in it. All the good we see comes from you. You have always loved us but people have not always loved you. You sent Jesus to show us how to live and to bring us back to you again. He died for us on the cross so that through your Spirit, we can all be your people. And so with thanks we praise you saying: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Presider: We are here because on the night before he died Jesus shared a meal with his friends. There he took some bread and gave thanks to you, God. He broke it into pieces and gave it to them. “This is my body,” he said, “Do this and know that I am with you.” Later, he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to you. He shared it with them, and said “This is my blood, which brings new life. Do this and know that I am with you.” And so, remembering Jesus, who died, was raised to new life by you, and is alive forever, we are glad to share that life and live in him.
