The Feast of the Confession of St. Peter

The Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany St. Peter’s Episcopal Church Glenside, Pennsylvania January 28, 2023 10:00 A.M.

About Come 4th Sunday At St. Peter’s the fourth Sunday of the month is Come 4th Sunday. It’s a time when we come forth in new ways to celebrate being the Body of Christ.

Children come forth to read Scripture and lead prayer, and to get a better look at what’s going on.

Families come forth to take on new roles.

New members come forth for a blessing.

We all come forth to receive Jesus in the Eucharist, and we all go forth as his disciples – with God’s help.

The Scripture translations are from the resource God’s Word, my Voice, by Lyn Zill Briggs, Church Publishing: 2015. They are written in a way that is easy for young readers to proclaim and understand.

Our opening prayers are from the supplemental liturgical materials in Enriching Our Worship 1.

Our choir will lead us in songs that are simple to sing but full of meaning. When the words aren’t written in the leaflet, we use the Blue Hymnal; the thin green Wonder, Love and Praise Book (WLP), or the thin blue With One Voice (WOV) hymnal.

And you can even color the front page of the leaflet. Crayons are available in the basket in the narthex. All ages welcome.

Infants, toddlers and their families can hang out in our soft space on the right side of the worship space, which welcomes soft toys, soft activities and soft voices.

Wiggles are also welcome.

Overall, this is a great opportunity to ask yourself, how can I come forth to serve Jesus in new ways this year?

Collect of the Day Almighty and everlasting God, you rule over everything, both in heaven and on earth: Have mercy on us when we cry out to you, and help us find your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Listening for God’s Word The First Reading – Acts 4:8-13 Reader: A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles ... Peter, full of the Holy Spirit, let loose: “Rulers and leaders of the people, if we have been brought to trial today for helping a sick man, put under investigation regarding this healing, I’ll be completely frank with you—we have nothing to hide. By the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, the One you killed on a cross, the One God raised from the dead, by means of his name this man stands before you healthy and whole. Jesus is ‘the stone you masons threw out, which is now the cornerstone.’ Salvation comes no other way; no other name has been or will be given to us by which we can be saved, only this one.”

They couldn’t take their eyes off them—Peter and John standing there so confident, so sure of themselves! Their fascination deepened when they realized these two were laymen with no training in Scripture or formal education. They recognized them as companions of Jesus, but with the man right before them, seeing him standing there so upright—so healed!—what could they say against that?

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

He takes me to places where I can rest in peaceful, green pastures, and lie down beside deep, still, soothing waters.

He puts new life back into me and shows me the right ways to go.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I'm not scared because the Lord is with me. He carries a big stick, and a crook to grab me if I fall down a ravine. That makes me feel a lot better.

When those who make fun of me are watching, he spreads out a feast in front of them. A feast just for me. And he anoints me just as a king would be anointed. My cup is running over. My happiness is complete.

There is nowhere I can go that the Lord's goodness and mercy isn't already there. It's like living in the Lord's house for ever and ever.

What more could I need or want?

Second Reading - 1 Peter 5:1-5 Reader: A Reading from the First Letter of Peter I have a special concern for you church leaders. I know what it’s like to be a leader, in on Christ’s sufferings as well as the coming glory. Here’s my concern: that you care for God’s flock with all the diligence of a shepherd. Not because you have to, but because you want to please God. Not calculating what you can get out of it, but acting spontaneously. Not bossily telling others what to do, but tenderly showing them the way.

When God, who is the best shepherd of all, comes out in the open with his rule, he’ll see that you’ve done it right and commend you lavishly. And you who are younger must follow your leaders. But all of you, leaders and followers alike, are to be down to earth with each other, for— God has had it with the proud, But takes delight in just plain people.

I will put together my church, a church so expansive with energy that not even the gates of hell will be able to keep it out.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We pray for our community, country and world. We pray especially for the victims of war, especially for those in Israel and Palestine, for those in Ukraine, and all who are in harm’s way.

We pray for all who gather as your Church, especially our bishops, clergy and all who serve in ministry.

Help us to love with your love.

We pray for the earth and all your good gifts, especially for the will to address climate catastrophe and help all affected by climate-change related floods, fires and droughts.

Help us to love with your love.

We pray for those who need kindness and care, especially those who are ill, who are in emotional pain or who are struggling to make ends meet.

Help us to love with your love.

We pray for those who need your wisdom and grace.

Help us to love with your love.

We pray for our needs in silence or out loud … (pause for people to share their prayers) We pray for all who have died, especially the Rev. Emily Richards and those we name now... (pause for people to share their prayers) Dear Lord, hear our prayer.

All the good we see comes from you. You have always loved us but people have not always loved you. You sent Jesus to show us how to live and to bring us back to you again. He died for us on the cross so that through your Spirit, we can all be your people.

Presider: We are here because on the night before he died Jesus shared a meal with his friends. There he took some bread and gave thanks to you, God. He broke it into pieces and gave it to them. “This is my body,” he said, “Do this and know that I am with you.”

Later, he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to you. He shared it with them, and said “This is my blood, which brings new life. Do this and know that I am with you.”

And so, remembering Jesus, who died, was raised to new life by you, and is alive forever, we are glad to share that life and live in him.

Let us proclaim the mystery of our faith: 9

Presider: Send your Holy Spirit so that this bread and wine can be for us the body and blood of Jesus, and through this food give us strength to live as your people.
