Prayer of the Day Listening for God’s Word The First Reading - Jeremiah 31:31-34 The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt - a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, “Know the Lord,” for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.

Chant #9, Lord Jesus Christ

The Gospel - John 12:20-33 Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks.

They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor. “Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say - ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not for mine.

Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die.

Silence - about 5 minutes “Three times each day, everything stops on the hill of Taizé: the work, the Bible studies, the small-group discussions. The bells call everyone to the church for prayer. Hundreds, sometimes thousands of young adults from many different countries across the world pray and sing with the brothers of the community. Short songs sung over and over again that, in a few words, express a basic reality, quickly grasped by the mind. Then the Bible is read in several languages. At the center of every prayer service, a long moment of silence offers an irreplaceable opportunity to encounter God.” (- one of the Taizé brothers).

During our silence here, you are invited to experience God in a new way. If you are struggling with what to do, read the leaflet, think about the readings, recall the words of the chants. Allow yourself to be still. Step into that unfamiliar place, and listen for the holy. There is no right or wrong way; simply enter with an open heart.

Nicene Creed BCP 358 We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. The Celebrant continues We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him.

Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

Taizè Prayer Our prayer today is patterned after the Taizé community in France. There, at the heart of community prayer (we call it worship), pilgrims engage in the experience before even knowing what to expect. We want you to share that same experience.

The Chants of Taizé reflect the many languages of the pilgrims who travel to

the Taizé Community in France. When the language we’ve chosen for our service (noted in parentheses) is not the primary one, look for it below. The many translations remind us we are connected in faith with others around the world.

On Silence When we try to express communion with God in words, we rapidly reach the end of our capacities. But in the depths of our being, Christ is praying, far more than we imagine. Compared with the immensity of that hidden prayer of Christ in us, our explicit praying dwindles to almost nothing. That is why silence is so essential in discovering the heart of prayer. Although God never stops trying to communicate with us, God never wants to impose anything on us. Often God’s voice comes in a whisper, in a breath of silence. Remaining in silence in God’s presence, open to the Spirit, is already prayer. It is not a matter of trying to obtain inner silence at all costs by following some method that creates a kind of emptiness within. The important thing is a childlike attitude of trust by which we will allow Christ to pray within us silently, and then one day we will discover that the depths of our being are inhabited by a Presence.

Holy Week at St. Peter’s March 28 – April 4, 2021 Palm Sunday: 10 a.m. It begins with Liturgy of the Palms on the front lawn of the church. The Passion Gospel reading and Holy Eucharist follow in the sanctuary. This portion will be live-streamed.

Maundy Thursday: 6:30 p.m. Meal and Service: We will gather around our own dinner tables, share in a simple meal and participate in this service.

If you would like to enjoy Daniel Richards' soup as part of your meal, you can pick up pints for you and your family in the church kitchen, Wednesday from 3-6 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. -6 p.m. Please sign up for soup HERE A special hand-washing ritual will take the place of the foot-washing, an agape feast, Holy Communion and a video-taped Stripping of the Altar. We will use the Zoom platform and it will also be live-streamed.

Garden of Repose: Thursday evening through Friday evening Again we are offering an opportunity to experience those last hours of Jesus’ earthy life in the Garden of Repose in our chapel. Adorned with flowers and candles, the chapel will be open until midnight on Maundy Thursday and from 6 a.m. until after the Tenebrae service on Good Friday. The Garden of Repose is designed to bring us closer to the experience of the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus invited his most trusted disciples to “watch with him and pray.”

Please come and pray, light candles, sit in silence and in the beauty of the garden and wait as Jesus had asked his disciples to do with him on his last earthly night.

Good Friday: Tenebrae Service: 7:30 p.m. Live-streamed Service of Shadows in the sanctuary.

Easter Sunday: 10 a.m. Live-streaming Festive Holy Eucharist. The service will conclude with Handel's Hallelujah Chorus.
