Opening Prayer

Listening for God’s Word The First Reading - Jeremiah 1:4-10 This is what God said: “Before I shaped you in the womb, I knew all about you. Before you saw the light of day, I had holy plans for you: A prophet to the nations - that’s what I had in mind for you.” But I said, “Hold it, Master God! Look at me. I don’t know anything. I’m only a boy!” God told me, “Don’t say, ‘I’m only a boy.’ I’ll tell you where to go and you’ll go there. I’ll tell you what to say and you’ll say it. Don’t be 3

afraid of a soul. I’ll be right there, looking after you.” God’s Decree. God reached out, touched my mouth, and said, “Look! I’ve just put my words in your mouth - handdelivered! See what I’ve done? I’ve given you a job to do among nations and governments - a red-letter day! Your job is to pull up and tear down, take apart and demolish, And then start over, building and planting.”

The Gospel - Luke 2:39-52 Before the Gospel the people respond: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When they finished everything required by God in the Law, they returned to Galilee and their own town, Nazareth. There the child grew strong in body and wise in spirit.

And the grace of God was on him. Every year Jesus' parents traveled to Jerusalem for the Feast of Passover. When he was twelve years old, they went up as they always did for the Feast. When it was over and they left for home, the child Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his parents didn't know it. Thinking he was somewhere in the company of pilgrims, they journeyed for a whole day and then began looking for him among relatives and neighbors. When they didn't find him, they went back to Jerusalem looking for him. The next day they found him in the Temple seated among the teachers, listening to them and asking questions. The teachers were all quite taken with him, impressed with the sharpness of his answers. But his parents were not impressed; they were upset and hurt. His mother said, "Young man, why have you done this to us? Your 5

father and I have been half out of our minds looking for you." He said, "Why were you looking for me? Didn't you know that I had to be here, dealing with the things of my Father?" But they had no idea what he was talking about. So he went back to Nazareth with them, and lived obediently with them. His mother held these things dearly, deep within herself. And Jesus matured, growing up in both body and spirit, blessed by both God and people.

After the Gospel the people respond: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Affirmation of Faith Celebrant: Let us declare our faith in God: People: We believe in God the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named.

We believe in God the Son, who lives in our hearts through faith, and fills us with his love.

We believe in God the Holy Spirit, who strengthens us with power from on high.

We believe in one God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

Prayers of the People With all our heart and with all our minds, let us pray to the Lord, saying, “Lord, bless us that we may be a blessing.�

For the church, that we welcome every young person as you welcomed them, and that we bring good news to all, we pray to the Lord, Lord, bless us that we may be a blessing.

For our nation and our leaders, give them wisdom and courage to change what is wrong and see that until all young people are well, none of us is well, we pray to the Lord, Lord, bless us that we may be a blessing.

In a world where children hunger and starve, where they get sick, where they face bullets and bombs, help us protect and defend them, we pray to the Lord, Lord, bless us that we may be a blessing.

For all who are in any need or trouble, remembering all on our parish prayer list, especially Angie, Frances, AJ, Albert, Katie, Richard, Lisa, Bob, Hannah, Art, Doris, Warren, Christina, Donald, Holly, Kathy, Mary, Barbara, Linda, Rhonda, Ruth, and all those suffering from COVID-19, and all those we now name……(PAUSE) we pray to the Lord, Lord, bless us that we may be a blessing.

On this day as we celebrate Samantha, Harrison, Maggie and Colleen, may all of our young people including them, come to know more deeply God’s love for them, we pray to the Lord, Lord, bless us that we may be a blessing.

For all who have died, especially remembering beloved long time members Rose Cochran and Kay Darby, and those who have died from COVID-19, trusting that they now have a home in your heavenly Kingdom; and all those we name now…..(PAUSE), we pray to the Lord, Lord, bless us that we may be a blessing.

The celebrant concludes with a prayer.

The Rite 13 Ceremony The Presentation Sponsors: Emily, we present Samantha Gill, Harrison Reazor, Maggie Richards, and Colleen Schmidt who this day move from childhood to adulthood.

Celebrant: Dear People of God: The transformation from childhood to adulthood marks one of God’s great gifts. Today we celebrate this gift among these young people.

Samantha, Harrison, Maggie and Colleen, by the grace of God you have lived through the pains and joys of childhood, and have grown strong. Now, as men and women, it is given to you to share God’s power of creation. Human beings, because they are made in God’s image, are the only creatures on earth who can choose how to use their creative power – not only to create new life, but also to shape the world according to God’s purpose. God calls us to use this gift to build and not to destroy. Are you aware of God’s gift to you and the responsibility to use it wisely?

Celebrities: I am.

Celebrant: Let us join with these young people in reading Psalm 139.

Psalm 139:1,8-9,12-15,22-23 The Prayer for the Parents Celebrant: When Mary and Joseph searched for Jesus and found him in the temple, talking with the elders, they realized that he was a child no longer. So, Stephanie, Emily, Daniel, Amy, Ron, Nancy and Darrin, stand watching their young people grow beyond childhood. Let us pray for them.

O God, bless Stephanie, Emily, Daniel, Amy, Ron, Nancy and Darrin, the parents of these young people. Rejoice with them as their son and daughters become adults.

Strengthen them that they may support their young people as they begin the journey toward adulthood. Uphold them by your Spirit, that they may comfort them, although they can neither walk their road for them nor shield them from pain. Carry them all safely through this journey, so that one day they may stand together as adults and friends, a joy and a comfort to each other all the days of their lives. Amen.

The Charge to the Young People Celebrant: Dear friends of Samantha, Harrison, Maggie and Colleen: As they move beyond the circle of their families, they will need loyal friends. Will you stand by them, knowing that there may be times when your support means more than any other?

Young People: We will, with God’s help.

The Charge to the Congregation Celebrant: As the living Body of Christ, we have been empowered by the Holy Spirit to do God’s work in the world. Will you, as a community of God which spans the generations, share your knowledge and experience with these young people as they become adults?

People: We will, with God’s help.

Celebrant: Will you guide, guard and sustain them as they grow into the full stature of Christ?

People: We will, with God’s help.

The Blessing Celebrant: Samantha, Harrison, Maggie and Colleen, you have been armed by Almighty God with both the imagination of childhood and the strength and creative power of adulthood; now you must journey forth to gain the skills you will need to assume full responsibility as an adult.

The Celebrities kneel. The parents come forward and lay their hands on the Celebrities’ shoulders. The Celebrant lays her hands on each of them and says, N., May Almighty God fill you with courage, wisdom and joy. May Jesus Christ, your strong companion and never-failing friend, make you strong in faith and defend you on every side. May the Holy Spirit guide you in truth and peace. And may the blessing of God Almighty, Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer, rest upon you this day and for evermore.

Celebrant: At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home.

People: By your will they were created and have their being.

Celebrant: From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another.

People: Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight.

Celebrant: Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and sages you revealed your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent your only Son, born of a woman, to fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace.

People: By his blood, he reconciled us. By his wounds, we are healed.

The Celebrant continues And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by him, and made a new people by water and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord.

On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me."

After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."

Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving, Celebrant and People We celebrate his death and resurrection, as we await the day of his coming.

Lord God of our Fathers: God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us.

Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his name.

People: Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread.

The Post-Communion Prayer During a Time of Separation Priest and people together Lord of the Feast, we thank you for gathering us as your people. We call to remembrance the many times we have been fed at your table and we lament our distance now.
