ANNUAL REPORT

HEAD OF SCHOOL LETTER A look into our strategic synergy

OUR COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR RECOMMENDED A GUIDING THEME FOR THIS LETTER—STRATEGIC SYNERGY. THE PHRASE SOUNDS A BIT LIKE A SOUNDBITE FROM T.V.’S MICHAEL SCOTT, REGIONAL DIRECTOR OF DUNDER MIFFLIN. (I ENJOY MICHAEL’S WORDS OF WISDOM.) A FEW OF MY FAVORITES MICHAEL SCOTT QUOTES:

“Well, just tell him to call me ASAP as possible.” Like Michael, I like for things to get done quickly. I’m impatient. I want rapid change. “I’m not superstitious; just a little stitious.” Most of the time, I believe that hard work determines the outcome, but a little bit of luck never hurts. “I’ve got to make sure that Youtube comes down to tape this.” I want to hire a full-time media team to celebrate our success. So, here goes my attempt to inspire our community in the style of Michael Scott. “Strategic Synergy, it’s like when energy becomes a laser.” Over the past three years, our community energy has been a laser. Our laser set its sights on two key planks of our Strategic Roadmap: to enhance the student experience and upgrade our facilities.

To enhance the student experience, we aligned our program enhancements with our staffing model and spaces. Our faculty embraced professional development in STEAM and Project Based Learning (PBL). We also extended art instruction and added an innovation coach to help us lead change. Teachers are implementing challenging, hands on experiences across all grade levels. To upgrade our facilities, we built an innovative middle school. We also renovated the art rooms, tripled science lab space, and remodeled the library. We now have Strategic Synergy with our programs, people, and places. Moving forward, we will continue to focus on personal growth and STEAM and PBL professional development. By the end of

“ It’s simply beyond words, it’s incalculable.”

2018-2019, every faculty member will be able to plan and lead a gold standard PBL project. Our teachers are also visiting schools and attending conferences to find emerging programs that match our mission and culture. We are synergized.

our success. Thank you for your contributions. Thank you for being part of our community, and thank you for sending your children to St. Paul’s.

This fall, our faculty and our architects met to plan the next phase of our renovation. Over the summer, we plan to update the first and second floors and remodel the south lobby. If we stay synergized, our entire campus will transform by this time next year.

Please also join me in thanking our faculty, staff, and administrative team for their tireless work. They are incredible. I am going to stop writing now before I get emotional and leave you with one more Michael Scott nugget. This quote captures my feelings about the past year, “It’s simply beyond words, it’s incalculable.”

THE INVEST IN LEARNING, INVEST IN LEADERS CAMPAIGN Renovation campaign brings dynamic improvements to St. Paul’s

IN AUGUST 2018, WE OPENED THE DOORS TO THE CULMINATION OF PHASE ONE OF OUR INVEST IN LEARNING, INVEST IN LEADERS CAMPAIGN.

Today, you can find students exploring coding in the new makerspace, creating water color art with a professional artist in the upgraded art room, using vernier probes in the expanded science lab, building camaraderie in the pitch space, and so much more. The renovated spaces are exceeding expectations as our teachers use them to expand our students’ abilities to ask good questions, test hypotheses, and find solutions to engaging problems. “I love the resources the spaces offer us. I’ve really enjoyed the open maker space hours where students work on specific design challenges or their own passion projects. So far this year, we’ve worked on 3-d printing, circuitry, engineering, coding, and more. It brings increased voice and choice for the student, which is very powerful for their learning.” – Maeve O’Connor, 6th grade science teacher and innovation leader

Now, we work to bring these transformative learning spaces to the lower grades, too. Our Middle School faculty utilize our new flexible learning hubs and common spaces all day every day – harnessing the power of small group learning in spaces designed to foster collaboration. Our younger kids deserve the same opportunity. “We have watched the phase one renovation inspire student learning with its student-centered commons and flex-hub, collaborative breakout rooms, and open classrooms. For phase two, we are excited to create a space that reflects the creativity and unique needs of our younger students. The renovations will allow our dynamic curriculum to shine and spark a lifelong love of learning in our younger students.” – Mindy Stephenson, Toddler-2nd grade division head

Our Summer 2019 renovations will bring this vision to the entire St. Paul’s school community. But we can’t do it without your help. To learn more about how you can join us, contact the Development Office at (816) 268-6537.

ST. PAUL’S BRAND UPDATE Timeless tradition. Leading-edge learning.

IT’S AN EXCITING TIME AT ST. PAUL’S. THIS FALL, WE OPENED A STATE-OF-THE-ART MIDDLE

a brand agency, we shared our refreshed visual branding with the St. Paul’s community.

SCHOOL—A STUDENT-CENTERED, COLLABORATIVE SPACE ANCHORED BY EXPANDED SCIENCE AND STEAM LABS.

As we enter this new era, it’s was an appropriate time to revisit our school branding. While most organizations refresh their brand every five years or so, ours had remained relatively unchanged for the past 25 years. After extensive work throughout summer 2018, which included community surveys, faculty feedback, and intensive work with

You’ll see that we retained the St. Paul’s name and font, which is featured on our exterior signage and shared with the church – a nod to our tradition. But, we also made a few intentional changes. We updated the font for the Episcopal Day School portion of the name to reflect our modern approach to curriculum, and we repositioned the word mark to highlight the name we’re generally known by in the community—St. Paul’s. For the new logo, we were inspired by the original school crest and the

globe cross logo used for many years. We updated and married the two to form a classic, fresh logo for St. Paul’s Episcopal Day School. We kept a cross (notice the subtle sword design) to honor the globe logo and the life and work of Saint Paul. The outer shield pays respect to the traditional crest and connects to our Spartan mascot. (In Spartan history, shields were treasured family heirlooms passed generation to generation. When you invest in a St. Paul’s education, you are passing on the timeless gifts of community, a love of learning, and good citizenship.) As part of our brand refresh, we revisited the Spartan mascot. After

listening to family and faculty feedback, we decided to keep the Spartan as St. Paul’s mascot and refresh its visual identity. We created a simple, bold Spartan that our students can use for clubs, athletics and more. These changes will enable us to increase school culture and engagement as we cheer on the Spartans together. The new marks and color pallet are classic and bold. We’re confident this brand will carry St. Paul’s into the future as we continue to develop confident learners, ethical leaders, and compassionate, engaged citizens.

FUNDING A NEW KIND OF FACULTY DEVELOPMENT Lathrop M. Gates Faculty Enrichment Fund provides rich experiences.

ST. PAUL’S IS HONORED TO STEWARD MANY DIVERSE INVESTMENTS IN THE ST. PAUL’S COMMUNITY. ONE UNIQUE GIFT IS THAT OF THE LATHROP M. GATES FACULTY ENRICHMENT FUND, WHICH ENSURES THAT ST. PAUL’S TEACHERS CAN CREATE PERSONALLY ENRICHING OPPORTUNITIES FOR THEIR PROFESSIONAL GROWTH.

For seven years, the Lathrop M. Gates Faculty Enrichment Fund grant recipients have crafted unique experiences to enhance core subjects for their students. From visiting presidential libraries and museums to following the Lewis and Clark Trail, these grants allow St. Paul’s teachers to experience more than they ever could in a conference breakout session. This year, the Fund got a special boost through the marriage of Newell Gates and Cameron Brookfield. Newell and Cameron, both former students at St. Paul’s, requested donations to the Fund in leu of wedding gifts for their May 2018 nuptials. Our teachers are thankful for the generosity of their friends and family.

FROM OUR 2018 RECIPIENTS

“Thanks to the Lathrop M. Gates Faculty Enrichment Fund grant, I traveled to New York City during the summer of 2018. I went to experience international music in an immersive, organic way, primarily through a multicultural festival in Harlem. It was incredible. From watching Chinese fan dancers, to seeing new African instruments for the first time, to touring the rich immigrant history of New York City, it was a trip of a lifetime that left me enriched and inspired as a music educator.” RACHEL O’CONNELL EARLY CHILDHOOD–2ND GRADE MUSIC TEACHER

“This summer I walked the Portuguese route of the Camino de Santiago. My brother and I walked for nine days, approximately 120 miles, through northern Portugal and into Spain, ending in Santiago de Compostela. The Camino was a fantastic opportunity to remove distractions and reconnect – with myself, my brother, nature, and the Spanish language and culture.” HUNTER WARD MIDDLE SCHOOL SPANISH TEACHER

ANNUAL FUND All in!

ALL IN! THAT’S BEEN OUR THEME AT ST. PAUL’S FOR THE LAST YEAR, AND YOU HAVE PROVEN TIME AND AGAIN THAT YOU’RE ALL IN WITH US.

The 2017-2018 Annual Fund saw an incredible 65% parent participation, raising nearly $270,000 which surpassed our goal. The Annual Fund has the most direct impact on our students’ education, because it goes to work immediately meeting our current operating needs. Gifts to the Annual Fund range from $10 to more than $10,000, and every gift is an important part of our success as a school. With the generosity of our community, we do more than provide a good education: we provide dynamic opportunities for students to love, learn and lead.

PARENTS’ GUILD The St. Paul’s community in action.

EVERY YEAR, A DEDICATED AND ACTIVE CADRE OF PARENTS COME TOGETHER TO SUPPORT THE SCHOOL AND ITS STUDENTS IN A WIDE VARIETY OF WAYS. Whether serving

as room parents, auction volunteers, or being called upon for ad hoc needs, the members of Parents’ Guild play a vital role in fulfilling the mission of St. Paul’s. Thank you to all parents who volunteer and make financial contributions through the Parents’ Guild. AUCTION SPONSORS The annual St. Paul’s auction is our school’s largest fundraising event. Parents, grandparents, church members, faculty and staff gather to support the school at this fun and festive event. The 2018 Auction, Aloha from St. Paul’s, helped us raise more than $250,000. The generosity of our families and Kansas City businesses, along with the talents shared from our volunteers, made the event possible.
