2016-17: community upd Dear friends of St. Paul’s:

2016-2017 was a banner year for St. Paul’s Episcopal Day School! As a community, guided by our Strategic Roadmap, we focused on four major areas: enhancing the student experience, upgrading our facilities, optimizing enrollment, and building upon our solid financial foundation.

As you review our annual report, you will see that we continue to be excellent stewards of our resources. We operate with a balanced budget, maintain recommended levels of reserves, and successfully manage a growing endowment.

But, independent schools are expensive enterprises. We must continue to invest in our faculty, facilities, and programs to serve our current students and ensure that St. Paul’s will be in midtown for the next 55 years (and beyond).

We have made significant strategic progress, and your support has been critical. After a record auction and Fund-A-Need, we launched our school wide STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) Accelerator and an innovative Project Based Learning initiative. Following a summer of intensive professional development, our teachers are creating challenging, hands-on experiences across all grade levels and across the curriculum.

This fall, we also introduced our 5th-8th grade Anchor Trip series. Our 8th graders spent a breathtaking week in the Rockies, team building and learning about the ecology of the region. Over the next few months, our fifth graders will travel to the Ozarks to build leadership skills, our sixth graders will visit Heifer International in Arkansas to learn about global food issues and sustainability, and our 7th graders will visit a working marine lab to better understand our earth’s environment.

date excellent academic, character education, and chapel programs.

In addition to programmatic upgrades, we spent the last fifteen months preparing to completely upgrade and renovate our campus. Teaching and learning are changing rapidly. Students collaborate in small groups; teachers guide students through hands-on experimentation; and students are given frequent opportunities to solve authentic problems. Our teachers and students have embraced this new paradigm, and we must re-imagine our classrooms and learning spaces to meet the needs of our community.

After a year of work, we recently finalized and shared our campus master plan. For the past few months, we have been working behind the scenes to prepare for a capital campaign. The initial fundraising feedback has been excellent, and soon we will be asking for community-wide support.

We exist to develop confident learners, ethical leaders, and compassionate, engaged citizens. Your ongoing willingness to share your time, talent, and treasure is a critical component of our success. PARENTS HONOR SON WITH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

For two years, Melissa and David have directed gifts from this fund to St. Paul’s for a student scholarship awarded to a student who would not have been able to attend St. Paul’s without their help.

“He was always cognizant of those that weren’t as fortunate as others,” David adds, “so he would think it’s really cool that there are some kids at St. Paul’s who might not have otherwise enrolled.”

When Matthew Skeens ‘08 died in an ATV accident in 2010, his parents, David and Melissa, set up a memorial fund through the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation.

The first student to receive the scholarship provided through gifts from the Matthew Skeens Memorial Fund completed his 8th The Skeens, longtime grade year in May and now members of St. Paul’s attends Rockhurst High Episcopal Church, became School. FUND-A-NEED PROGRAM INCREASES STEM RESOURCES If you’ve been to the St. Paul’s Auction, you’ve seen the bid cards fly when the live auction breaks and guests are asked to “fund-a-need.” These gifts have helped St. Paul’s stretch and expand our core programs and stay on the leading edge of independent schools.

In the last two years, Fund-A-Need donors have given more than $130,000 toward an initiative to bring more STEM (science, technology, education and math) programing into the school’s curriculum and pilot 21st century classrooms.

Last year’s record-breaking Fund-A-Need gift allowed St. Paul’s to send a school-wide team of teachers and administrators to STEM training at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. St. Paul’s was also able to implement innovative STEM curriculum and purchase supplemental resources with these funds.

Brian Humphrey, 7th grade student, is participating in the Medical Detective elective in middle school. “We are learning about the body’s main functions, maintaining homeostasis and fixing the body. Instead of being overwhelmed, we are learning one step at a time about something that is important to the world.”

In the previous academic year, Fund-A-Need gifts helped outfit three classrooms — one 6th grade room and two 4th grade rooms — with highly adaptable furniture. The furniture, which St. Paul’s hopes to add to more classrooms in the future, is reflective of a recognition among educators that not all students learn alike, so they shouldn’t all have to sit and work in rows of rigid desks and chairs.

In today’s classrooms, teachers are “guides on the side,” facilitating student-led learning. They’re not lecturing to students from the front of the room, spooning out information. “Believe it or not, the physical space impacts teaching and learning,” says Andrew Myler, Head of School. St. Paul’s will continue to invest in the school’s physical spaces.

ST. PAUL’S PARENTS’ GUILD Every year, a dedicated and active cadre of parents come together to support the school and its students in a wide variety of ways. ALUMNI RETURN TO THE SCHOOL AS SPEAKERS Each month, St. Paul’s middle school students have an opportunity to glimpse into the future – at least a possible future. The school invites alumni to speak during chapel on a regular basis. These graduates share their real-world experience with our students.

“They’re seeing their future selves,” says Ted van Thullenar, Dean of Students and coordinator of the alumni speaker program. “It’s amazing to see the students looking up at these kids thinking, ‘I want to do that,’ or ‘I want to go to that school.’ “ Van Thullenar, who has been a St. Paul’s teacher or administrator for three decades, still calls the speakers “kids” even though he has watched with unabashed pride as they have grown into successful adults.

“The guest speakers give more advice than you might expect,” says Ella Lorfing, 8th grade student. “They share about bumps in the road and how they handled those situations. It’s helpful to know what to expect.”

Speakers are doing a wide variety of things with their lives, which is exactly what van Thullenar wants his current students to see. He wants them to know that life is full of many different possibilities.

In February, Annie Palmer Noren ‘93, advised students to say thank you and be selfless. “Find your passion and get involved,” she said. “Be proactive and reach out to others. Don’t be afraid to speak up and ask for help.”

Yoga instructor, urban farmer and graduate student, Emily Cox ‘07, visited late in the spring. She encouraged students to spread their light and wisdom to others. “Doors to the world are there for you to open.”

Last year more than 20 alumni spoke at chapel. This year, there will be many more sharing their experiences with the middle school students.

“To the kids, it’s not like the teachers preaching,” van Thullenar says. “It’s people who used to be in their shoes. They really listen to that.”

ENDOWMENT FUNDS Tuition Assistance Fund Endowment helps stabilize enrollment and increase the registration of middle income students by providing scholarships and keeping tuition consistent. Endowment funds can help ensure that access to a St. Paul’s education remains in reach for qualified, talented students and strengthens diversity within our community.

Sustainability Fund Endowment is the single best strategy to assure sustainability in future years. It provides a safety net against economic downturns and offers an annual revenue stream to sustain St. Paul’s mission.

Named endowment funds for the benefit of St. Paul’s Episcopal Day School: Curtis D. Blanc, III Memorial Endowment: Funds provide an annual award for tuition assistance for a student currently enrolled at St. Paul’s who has lost a parent, or whose family needs temporary assistance due to a job loss or serious medical issue.

Callison Family Library Learning Resource Endowment: Funds provide annual revenue for library resources at St. Paul’s.

Lathrop M. Gates Faculty Enrichment Endowment: Funds provide financial support for faculty enrichment experiences that augment professional development opportunities.

David and Krista Peterson Technology Endowment: Funds provide resources for the school’s technology needs.

Ward Fund for Building, Grounds and Maintenance: Funds provide resources for ongoing maintenance needs, as well as special projects which enhance the function and appearance of the school.
