HEAD OF SCHOOL LETTER The St. Paul’s community works together to meet any challenge.
I LOVE MUSIC. I AM PARTIAL TO THE ALTERNATIVE ARTISTS OF MY YOUTH — BILLY BRAGG, R.E.M., AND THE SMITHS. RECENTLY, I BRANCHED OUT AND DISCOVERED ANDREW BIRD. HE IS A TALENTED VIOLINIST AND SINGER SONGWRITER, AND I HAVE BEEN PLAYING HIS SONGS ON REPEAT...
On Bird’s latest album, he includes a song titled “Sisyphus.” After hearing the song, I revisited the Greek myth. In the afterlife, Sisyphus is forced to roll a boulder up a hill. Just as he reaches the top, the boulder rolls back to the bottom of the hill, and Sisyphus must start the process all over again. During our intensive campus remodel, our project sometimes felt Sisyphean. Luckily, unlike the suffering Sisyphus, we didn’t face the rock alone. At St. Paul’s, when the rock started to roll backwards, our community joined together to push us forward. With your support, commitment, and generosity, we were able to guide our rock over the hill and complete Phase Two of our renovation project. Our students now have innovative, flexible learning spaces that enhance the student experience and support 21st century teaching. As I walk the campus, I am thrilled to see our teachers and students collaborating, creating, and
problem-solving together. We are preparing our students for the learning environments and work places of the future. We are beyond grateful. Your support also allowed our teachers to pursue a wide range of professional development interests. Over the past year, our teachers studied multisensory math; Conscious Discipline; Project Lead the Way; Eurekus STEAM; Project Based Learning; student selfregulation; and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Daily, I see the amazing work of our faculty and staff and how quickly we can address an area of need or improve upon our strengths when we have the needed resources. As we wrap up the 2018-2019 giving year, please join me in thanking our board, faculty, volunteers, and donors for their contributions to the annual fund, the auction, and our capital campaign. INVEST IN LEARNING, INVEST IN LEADERS CAMPAIGN Dynamic changes transform the St. Paul’s lower school. IN AUGUST 2019, LOWER SCHOOL TEACHERS AND STUDENTS WALKED INTO NEWLY RENOVATED SPACES FUNDED THROUGH PHASE TWO OF THE INVEST IN LEARNING, INVEST IN LEADERS CAMPAIGN.
After our recent school updates, the entire St. Paul’s campus now supports 21st century learning. First through fifth grade students and teachers are enjoying the collaborative hubs, artwork gallery, and classrooms filled with natural light. Students can now stretch out in welcoming shared spaces for small group learning, guest speaker presentations, or daily chapel.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT Dakota Van Deursen ’11: Engineering a Better World ST. PAUL’S ALUMNUS DAKOTA VAN DEURSEN IS BUILDING ROCKETS AND DEVELOPING A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR HIS CLASSMATES AT STEVENS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY. HE’S PUTTING HIS BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING (AND SOONTO-BE MASTER’S DEGREE IN MATERIALS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING) TO GOOD USE DESIGNING, TESTING, AND EVENTUALLY LAUNCHING A ROCKET INTO SPACE. EVEN WITH A KNACK FOR SCIENCE, THOUGH, HE CONTINUES ADVOCATING FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE. Since April 2018, Dakota has been working with a team of seven classmates to form Castle Point Rocketry. Their start-up rocketry business is creating a small launch vehicle that can make it to the Karman Line, considered the boundary between the planet’s atmosphere and outer space. After researching designs, seeking funding, and acquiring rocket materials in 2018 and 2019, Dakota and Castle Point Rocketry are now sponsoring three new collegiate projects to get them closer to launching their rocket into space. Dakota is not just all about rockets, though. He’s also done some exciting research at Stevens and around the world. “I worked in an on-campus lab to synthesize novel treatments for malignant tumors. I also traveled to Thailand to intern with the

While serving as the President of Stevens Torch Alliance, a LGBTQ+ support organization, Dakota urged the university to introduce gender-neutral housing, create an accessible Gender and Name Change Form, and expand the university’s Gender Neutral Bathroom Initiative. He also worked in multiple leadership roles, including Vice President, for the Student Government Association where he wrote and sponsored legislation focused on improving student life. Dakota’s still exploring what’s next as he wraps up his education. Regardless of whether he’s working in engineering, government reform, or advocating for social justice, he’s bound to make a big impact.
When thinking back on his time at St. Paul’s, he noted, “Though I don’t think my 8th grade brain processed it at the time, I graduated from St. Paul’s pre-programmed to tackle just about any difficulty sent my way… St. Paul’s stresses the importance of becoming a wellrounded, dynamic individual.” We’re proud of Dakota’s many accomplishments, and his embodiment of the St. Paul’s mission to develop ethical leaders and compassionate, engaged citizens. COMMITTING TO FACULTY LEARNING Teachers travel across the country for new and innovative training.
THIS PAST SUMMER, ST. PAUL’S TEACHERS PARTICIPATED IN MORE THAN 450 HOURS OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS, SEMINARS, AND CONFERENCES. TEACHERS DEVELOPED THEIR SKILLS ACROSS MULTIPLE DISCIPLINES INCLUDING MULTISENSORY MATH, PROJECT-BASED LEARNING, CONSCIOUS DISCIPLINE, AND MUCH MORE.
St. Paul’s teachers are continually learning new techniques to provide an exceptional classroom experience for students. Whether it’s incorporating drumming curriculum to foster better communication skills or implementing daily positive affirmations, our teachers eagerly brought innovative new methods back to the St. Paul’s community this year. Professional development experiences like these are key to teachers providing diverse and engaging instruction for students. It’s evident St. Paul’s is not just committed to developing students who are confident learners, ethical leaders, and compassionate citizens; that commitment extends to our faculty as well.
DRUMMING WORKSHOP Rachel O’Connell, early childhood – 2nd grade music teacher, introduced students to our new collection of Tubano drums this year. After completing a week of “Drumming Up the Fun” training, she implemented drumming curriculum that teaches communication skills, fosters collaboration, and celebrates world music. Ms. O’Connell noted, “Drums bring such a sense of community and togetherness to the classroom.”
MULTISENSORY MATH Gretchen Beilharz, 3rd – 5th grade math teacher, went to a Multisensory Math workshop where she learned techniques to help students grasp abstract math concepts through drawing pictures and hands-on items (i.e. clocks, blocks, and measuring devices). This approach helps make math concepts more accessible and easier to understand for a wide range of students. One parent shared, “We are so thankful for the trainings that St. Paul’s teachers continue to pursue. St. Paul’s engages students of all abilities. Being able to touch and feel math is especially fun for [our son]!”
PROJECT BASED LEARNING A few St. Paul’s teachers had a great time this past summer learning all about Project Based Learning at a conference in Napa Valley. Ken Stewart (7th grade teacher), Abby Crady (Kindergarten teacher), Becky Nash (5th grade teacher), and Carey Lorfing (1st grade teacher) are all utilizing new PBL techniques to help students explore questions, showcase their research, and provide peer feedback.
CONSCIOUS DISCIPLINE Many St. Paul’s teachers received special training in Conscious Discipline techniques to promote kindness at the school. Matt Ronan (2nd grade teacher), Libby Huggins (3rd grade teacher), and Kelly Van Maren (4th grade teacher) are implementing exercises and activities to develop positivity, acknowledgement, and mindfulness in their classrooms. Ms. Huggins likes to start each day with a connecting activity where students use physical touch, eye contact, and affirmations to create a positive and focused learning environment. Mr. Ronan shared, “I’ve been emphasizing how much I care about them and focus on being as positive as possible. It makes the whole day better.”
At St. Paul’s Episcopal Day School, we offer excellent academics and service learning in a faith-based environment to prepare the next generation of leaders.

Each year, the Parents’ Guild strives to bring our school mission to life. These dedicated parent volunteers assist in meeting financial needs, organize activities to enhance the students’ experience, and create opportunities to help us grow closer as a community. Thank you to those in our community who supported the school through the book fair, auction and other Parents’ Guild events. Through your generosity, the Parents’ Guild helped provide St. Paul’s with $200,000 for library books, new sports and recess equipment, team uniforms, a new scoreboard on the upper field, as well as general support for the school’s operating budget.
