E
very month, we focus on a different character trait. As I write, we are working on growth mindset—the idea that your life is not fixed; you can change and grow. I believe that a growth mindset is critical for people and for organizations.
Over the last year, with your support, we embraced a growth mindset and positively impacted the student and community experience. •

We transformed the Manica Multipurpose Room with the addition of a second music room and breakout spaces for counseling, therapy services, and academic support. We implemented a new vertically aligned phonics program in kindergarten through 2nd grade to help us improve upon our already strong reading program. We added a 3rd through 8th grade learning specialist and moved our ECC counselor role to full time to better support students, parents, and faculty. We partnered with the church to add an associate rector/ chaplain position.

We set annual fund and auction/ fund-a-vision records.
What’s next? Currently, we are working on an updated campus master plan with a focus on the upper field, the early childhood learning spaces, and academic support and gathering spaces. We also recently completed a community-wide survey, and we are in the process of preparing for our school accreditation visit. We will use the survey information and this reflection opportunity to identify
the next areas for programmatic improvement. We are excited to share our vision and next programmatic steps in the late spring. As always, we will need your help and support. 1ST – 8TH GRADE SCHOOL COUNSELOR
MAKERSPACE & 6TH GRADE SCIENCE TEACHER 2022-2023 LATHROP M. GATES FACULTY ENRICHMENT GRANT RECIPIENT
Our school counselor, Mr. Patel, attended ASCA’s (American School Counselor Association) annual conference with over 6,000 school counselors from across the nation. The theme of the conference was “Dream Big.” Mr. Patel attended a variety of breakout groups on anxiety and stress management, mindfulness, grief work, and empowering kids beyond kindness. He went to many sessions for both elementary and middle school levels on topics such as evidence-based program practices, high-impact family engagement, engaging classroom lessons, and group counseling techniques. The conference wrapped up with Dr. Miguel Cardona, the U.S. Secretary of Education, and Dr. Bernice King, daughter of Dr. Martin Luther King and the CEO of the King Center. When asked about his experience, Mr. Patel shared, “I left feeling renewed, energized, and inspired to find better ways to support students and families in the St. Paul’s community.” 4 ST. In early June 2023, St. Paul’s Makerspace and 6th grade science teacher, Mrs. Kelly Van Maren, attended Space Camp at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL. The week-long program includes authentic astronaut training simulators and activities developed to promote learning in a classroom setting. Mrs. Van Maren returned to St. Paul’s with NASA-inspired lesson plans to incorporate into her Makerspace and 6th grade science classes. During Space Camp, Mrs. Van Maren tried out the multi-axis trainer, worked through space missions with a team, bounced in the 1/6th gravity chair, completed a water rescue mission and more. When asked about her favorite parts of Space Camp, Mrs. Van Maren shared, “I’d say that my favorite part was collaborating with teachers from all over the country. We were also able to talk with former employees
of NASA from the Apollo era who shared advice on effective communication, collaboration, dedication, and taking risks.”
BECKY NASH FIFTH GRADE TEACHER 2022-2023 LATHROP M. GATES FACULTY ENRICHMENT GRANT RECIPIENT
ALANKAR PATEL Fifth grade teacher, Becky Nash, traveled to historical and cultural exhibits in New York City and Nashville, TN. She returned with an array of experiences to support her social studies curriculum.

In NYC, Ms. Nash and her mom went on a Tenement Apartment Tour called “100 Years Apart” highlighting immigrant experiences of two different women living in different centuries. They also took a behindthe-scenes “Hard Hat Tour” on Ellis Island and visited the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. In Nashville, Ms. Nash enjoyed stopping at the Witness Walls, an outdoor monument dedicated to the Civil Rights movement. Ms. Nash also toured the National Museum of African American Music, and she shared, “This museum traces the roots of African American music through every era of American history. While there, I also got quite a bit of inspiration for our Change Makers museum in fifth grade. I would have never known about this museum had it not been for the Gates grant.”

TRANSFORMING THE ST. PAUL’S MULTIPURPOSE ROOM AND GYMNASIUM 2023 HAS BEEN A BANNER YEAR FOR UPDATING SPACES AROUND ST. PAUL’S

hrough the 2023 Auction Fund-a-Need campaign, St. Paul’s parents raised $186,000 to upgrade the school’s Manica Multipurpose Room and surrounding spaces. With this generous support, we:
Created four meeting spaces for student support services including: speech and occupational therapy, education support, counseling, and after school enrichment.
Built a new performance stage with soundproof walls, which now serves as a permanent classroom for Mrs. O’Connell’s toddler through 2nd grade music classes.
We are grateful to our community for supporting this worthy initiative. Now, students can relax and unwind with friends at lunch in this brighter, streamlined space. Faculty and staff

love having dedicated spaces to use for one-on-one counseling, academic coaching, music and creative movement classes, and parent education events.
In early 2023, we used money raised from the 2022 Fund-a-Need Spartan Spirit campaign to give the Ward Gymnasium a facelift. Parents generously donated $90,000 to update the space with new paint, wall graphics, and a new (more comfortable) bleacher system. We are thrilled with how it turned out, and it’s been exciting to display Spartan Spirit proudly at games and practices. Renovation projects like this make it clear how much the St. Paul’s community cares about the overall daily well-being of our students and faculty. Many thanks to our generous parent community for supporting these Fund-a-Need fundraising efforts year after year.

Can you describe your career for us? How did you decide you wanted to pursue this path? I began my career working for a non-profit called The Advocates for Human Rights, which provides legal services to asylum-seekers. I primarily 8 ST. PAUL’S EPISCOPAL DAY SCHOOL
worked on human rights advocacy at the United Nations. We worked on a variety of issues, including LGBTQI+ rights, abolition of the death penalty, women’s rights, and civil rights generally. I wanted to pursue human rights because it combined my skills in writing and French language as well as my passion for advocating for the rights of people in need in our community. What are your favorite things about your job? Are there any aspects that you find challenging? I started a new job about nine months ago as an Investigator at the Minnesota Department of Human Rights. I enjoy so many aspects of the job, including the very real impact we have on a daily basis. I enjoy talking with people and
allowing them to feel heard. I also love the process of investigating as it means I learn something new every day and get to use my analytical and writing skills to make determinations in my cases. It can be challenging to talk to people in their time of crisis, but it is simultaneously very rewarding. How do you like to spend your free time? Any hobbies? I am an avid reader, especially of scifi and fantasy books. I also enjoy a good memoir. I like to take walks with my partner, hang out with friends, do jigsaw puzzles, and crochet things for my niece and nephew. How do you think St. Paul’s prepared you for your future? St. Paul’s laid a very strong foundation for my writing skills. I learned from a very young age how to convey my thoughts in a concise and organized manner. I also gained my love for the French language and the opportunity to begin learning it early. Finally, St. Paul’s instilled in me the desire to help others and make an impact in this world. What advice do you have for current St. Paul’s students? I would advise current St. Paul’s students to enjoy the process of learning and remember that you do not have to have everything figured out. Try new things and spend time doing the things you enjoy. When you are doing something that gives you joy, you will have an impact on the world. 2022-2023 ANNUAL REPORT 9

A FOND FAREWELL TO MS. LAWRENCE

fter more than 25 years as a member of the St. Paul’s community, we are congratulating and thanking Toddler teacher, Ms. Kathy Lawrence, as she begins her well-earned retirement. Kathy became a part of the St. Paul’s community in 1996, when her daughter, Kiley, started prekindergarten. Kathy went on to teach in various roles at St. Paul’s before landing in her long-term role as a beloved toddler teacher.
When asked about her time at St. Paul’s, Kathy shared, “St. Paul’s has been my home, and I am extremely grateful for my time here. It gives me great pleasure to know that I have helped develop a love of school in several hundred children, and that will be one of my fondest memories.” In these early months of retirement, Kathy has been training to volunteer 12 ST. PAUL’S EPISCOPAL DAY SCHOOL
with Heartland Therapeutic Riding. She’s also been busy traveling all over the country spending time with her children and visiting other friends and family. Her son, Danny, recently got married, and he’s finishing up medical school at the University of Washington in Seattle. Kiley has one more year as Chief Resident of Anesthesiology at Massachusetts General before heading to Stanford University for her Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship. We are so grateful to Kathy for being such a warm, caring, and loving influence for hundreds of St. Paul’s students. We thank her for her decades of commitment and wish her a happy and fulfilling retirement!

ur students have big dreams, and St. Paul’s graduates leave with the skills and foundation to have bright futures. We all know that fulfilling dreams takes planning, hard work, perseverance, and a great support system. The same is true for funding our annual budget at St. Paul’s. We work diligently within the tuition dollars to provide an educational structure of amazing teachers and support staff. The generosity within our community augments these resources and fills a gap that tuition alone does not meet.

PARENTS’ GUILD ST. PAUL’S PARENTS SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY
O
ur dedicated team of parents works hard every year to support our teachers and students through a variety of projects. Parents’ Guild members serve as room parents, auction organizers, event coordinators, fundraisers, and much more. These efforts are vital to the St. Paul’s mission, and we are grateful for these parents’ volunteer time and financial support. This year, our Parents’ Guild Auction Chairs, Elizabeth Chilcote and Suzanne Fox, organized our most successful auction to date! During our Roarin’ Down Main Street auction on April 21, 2023, we raised more than $500,000 in donations! It was a fun-filled night with delightful auction items, delicious food, exciting music, and excellent company. Congratulations
Generous donations from the Parents’ Guild in 22-23 supported the school in the following ways: •
$406,000 donation to renovate the Manica Multipurpose Room, add student support spaces, and create a music classroom for toddlers through 2nd grade students

$110,000 donation toward the school’s operating budget
to our team of dedicated auction volunteers for helping make it such a successful event. Many thanks to our network of dedicated Parents’ Guild volunteers for organizing wonderful events all year long, including the book fair, carnival, golf tournament, barbecue competition, and much more!
