MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Message from the President Fall 2026 As St. Paul’s High School enters its centennial year, I am struck by the privilege of serving a school with such a deep and enduring story. To be entrusted with the presidency at this moment in our history is both humbling and inspiring, and I am grateful for the opportunity to help mark the long tradition of Jesuit education in Manitoba. This edition of The Crusader Magazine offers what so many of us value about St. Paul’s: a window into the life of the school today and a meaningful look back at the people, places and moments that have shaped us. Alongside the familiar updates, achievements and stories from across our community, this issue includes a special feature celebrating our Centennial and the history that has carried us to this point. A century is not built by any one generation. It is built through the prayers, sacrifice, leadership and generosity of many. It is built by the Jesuits who shaped and guided our mission, by the teachers and staff who gave their gifts to generations of students, by the families who believed in the value of a St. Paul’s education, and by alumni whose lives continue to reflect the formation they received here.

FALL 2026
Our Centennial theme, A Century of St. Paul’s: Honouring Our Past. Inspiring Our Future, reminds us that this anniversary calls us to honour what we have received and to carry it forward with purpose. We have inherited something deeply meaningful, and we are responsible for passing it on with care. Our purpose remains rooted in our Catholic, Jesuit mission: forming young men who are open to growth, loving, intellectually competent, religious, and committed to justice. While the world around us has changed greatly over the past 100 years, the heart of our mission remains constant. St. Paul’s continues to be a place where students are challenged to grow, to lead, to serve, and to become men for others. As we look toward the Centennial celebrations ahead, I hope this issue invites you to reconnect with the school’s story and to see your own place within it. Whether you are an alumnus, parent, donor, staff member, student, or friend of St. Paul’s, you are part of the legacy we celebrate and the future we are building together. Sincerely, Bob Lewin President St. Paul’s High School

CRUSADER NEWSPAPER The Crusader News is a fiercely—and suitably!— proud outfit for at least three reasons. First, this is a spectacularly bulky student group that doesn’t happen to be a sport. We boast no fewer than 40 active members, from pensive writers to exploratory artists to avid photographers to painstaking copy-editors to shepherding section editors to a gifted layout editor to a kind of philosopher-king chief editor. We are a big, busy group. Second, we cling with consequential desperation to the tradition of print journalism, going beyond the extra mile to ensure that we produce, four times a year, a handsome, robust, real text that documents our thoughts and our labours and our institution, in perpetuity. Not many schools anywhere at any level are able still to make this claim. Third, we believe in the abiding importance of unassisted, authentic, critical writing, writing that is carefully crafted and causes a stir. You might say we are the genuine article.

Coached by Mr. Anthony Falvo ’95 and Mr. Paulo Borges, the Crusader Soccer Program continues to flourish, grounded in discipline, teamwork, and the development of well-rounded student athletes. Through structured training and organized play, athletes build confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of responsibility to one another. The outdoor program attracts strong participation each year, with more than 60 students competing for team placement. A blend of emerging talent and experienced leaders fosters growth, mentorship, and sportsmanship as the Crusaders proudly represent the school in the WWAC Conference.
ICE FISHING The St. Paul’s Ice Fishing Team proudly represented the school at the Manitoba High School Ice Fishing Championships held at Balsam Bay on Lake Winnipeg. The team, made up of 37 Grade 9 students, competed against 77 schools and nearly 1,400 anglers from across Manitoba, earning an impressive second place finish in the AAAA category. Leading St. Paul’s anglers included Isaac Kustra ’29, who landed a 15-inch walleye, and Mason Mutcher ’29 with a 14.5-inch walleye. The team’s success was supported by dedicated parent volunteers, including alumni Damien Rakowski ’95 and Greg McDonald ’95, along with Jason Abbott.

and quick thinking. Outstanding performances earned top honours for speech competitors Leo Sun ’29, Eli Kwon ’28, and Kyle Zhang ’27. While the Grade 12 judges deliberated, Grade 9 students filled the MultiPlex with energy during a spirited spelling bee that tested vocabulary, composure, and perseverance. After an intense final round, Sammi Al Kaabi ’29 emerged as the last speller standing, closing the afternoon on a high note.
MASS CHOIR The Mass Choir at St. Paul’s is formed by the dedicated members of both our Junior and Senior Choirs. Together, they provide the music for all of our school Masses, offering leadership in prayer through song. Rehearsing during regular choir classes, the Mass Choir embraces its role as a ministry, using music to proclaim the Gospel and enrich the spiritual life of our students and school community.
BING CROSBY SPEECH CONTEST The Bing Crosby Speech Contest and the Paul Herriot Spelling Bee are long-standing St. Paul’s traditions that celebrate strong communication skills and academic excellence. Students from Grades 9 through 11 took the stage to compete in recitation, original speech, and impromptu speaking, showcasing confidence, creativity,
REACH FOR THE TOP As always, St. Paul’s this year fielded two small but eager Reach for the Top teams: one Intermediate (Grades 9 & 10) and one Senior (11 & 12). Both teams performed keenly and competitively in six tournaments with other schools. The Senior team displayed immense pluck in their outings, knowing from the get-go the cards might not have been in their favour this year. The Intermediate team drew into a terribly competitive division, one that remained stuck at .500 for all involved even into the final tournament (hosted at SPHS) wherein the SPHS boys fell so very painfully shy of a berth in the Provincials. But that is not what mattered. What mattered was the twicea-cycle lunch-time practices in a far off and far below classroom, practices enveloped in serious discussions, jocular camaraderie, and genuine learning without realizing that learning was being done. Watch out for the Senior Team in 2026-27: the pieces are slipping into place.

As St. Paul’s High School enters its centennial year, the school’s administrative team reflects both continuity and new beginnings. President Bob Lewin, who began his role last year, is joined by Jeff Laping ’89 as the new Principal, Jason Hurton in his second year as Vice Principal Academics, and Cindy Kochanski as the new Vice Principal Students. Together, they bring extensive experience, fresh perspective, and a shared commitment to the students, mission, and future of St. Paul’s.
BOB LEWIN – President Entering his second year as school President, Mr. Bob Lewin leads St. Paul’s at a significant moment in its history. Having previously served the community as Principal and Interim President, he brings deep institutional knowledge, continuity, and a clear sense of purpose to the role. For Bob, the Centennial is an opportunity to honour a century of faith, learning, and community while looking ahead with intention. He is energized by the implementation of the school’s Strategic Plan and by the collective strength of the administrative team, faculty, staff, Board, alumni, families, and students. At the heart of his vision is a commitment to Catholic faith and Ignatian spirituality. He believes St. Paul’s must continue to form young people not only academically, but through spiritual growth, character development, meaningful relationships, and service to others. Above all, Bob hopes every student feels known, valued and cared for within the St. Paul’s community. With gratitude for all that has come before and hope for what lies ahead, he looks forward to guiding St. Paul’s into its next century with faith, purpose, and commitment.

A LEGACY of LAUGHTER, SERVICE and CARE After 34 years of dedication to St. Paul’s, Mr. Raymond Comeault is closing an extraordinary chapter and beginning a new one as Executive Director at Gonzaga Middle School. It’s hard to imagine St. Paul’s without Mr. Comeault. Over more than three decades, he has shaped generations of students through French classes, Ignatian moments, drama productions, parent events and, above all, his kindness, humour and steady encouragement. Former students and colleagues alike remember a trusted presence who made people feel seen. His St. Paul’s story began when then-Principal Mr. Donald Boulet contacted Université de Saint-Boniface in search of a French teacher. Ray’s name was quickly mentioned, and the rest is history. Reflecting on the school’s evolution, Mr. Comeault recalled, “We were much more of a jock school back then; football and hockey dominated the extracurriculars. Now, we’ve got something for everyone, and we cater to a variety of interests and faith backgrounds. We’re more open to growth in varied ways now. It’s been amazing to be part of it all.” Among the many memories he will carry with him are assembling the school’s first Improv team and reaching Nationals in its first year, staff retreats, and alumni visits.

One especially meaningful visit came when an alumnus returned from the East Coast with his children and began singing Alleluia upon seeing Mr. Comeault, recalling the impact of his time in Mass Choir. Thirty years later, he had returned to the choir alongside his own children — a powerful reminder of the quiet ways Mr. Comeault’s work has touched lives. Reflecting on his departure, Mr. Comeault shared, “I always thought I would retire from St. Paul’s High School. I still feel like I have a lot of gas in my tank, but deep down, I also feel a quiet calling toward something new. The laughter, the relationships built in the classroom, and the sense of community among the staff, both in school and beyond, have been a defining part of my life for 34 years.” These words capture the heart of a career grounded in service and connection. When asked for a final lesson, he offered: “The search for finding God in all people and all things continues.” As he takes this leap into his next adventure, the St. Paul’s community extends its deepest gratitude. Mr. Comeault leaves behind a legacy that will continue to be felt for years to come. From the St. Paul’s community to Ray, we are going to miss you tremendously. Bonne continuation et tous nos vœux de succès pour la suite!

1951 Bing Crosby Speech Contest
The began in 1950, when the famed singer and actor donated trophies to encourage St. Paul’s students to develop their skills in rhetoric and public speaking. In a letter to students, Crosby wrote that “good speech becomes you” and wished competitors luck. A product of Jesuit education himself, Crosby credited his own training in elocution and debate with helping shape his confidence, vocabulary, and success. The contest remains a memorable chapter in St. Paul’s long tradition of forming articulate, thoughtful young men.

TRIBUTE DINNER
“This is not only my story. It’s the story we are all given a chance to help write together – one student, one door, one life at a time.”
Ignatian Challenge Award Tribute Dinner honouring Dr. Jerome Cranston One student, one door, one life at a time At this year’s 30th Ignatian Challenge Award Tribute Dinner, Dr. Jerome Cranston offered a powerful reflection on humility, justice, and the responsibility we share to open doors for others. With sincerity and depth, Dr. Cranston spoke about the meaning of receiving the Ignatian Challenge Award, noting his admiration for past honourees and the many ways they have helped make “this city, this province, this country and the world kinder and more gentle.” Yet, he reminded guests that recognition is never about one

person. “It’s about the communities that shape us and the values that guide us.” Those values, he shared, call us beyond ourselves: “to stand for justice, to create opportunities and to work so that dignity is never a privilege, but a promise meant to be kept.” Throughout his remarks, Dr. Cranston returned to the choices that define a life – whether we stay silent or stand for justice, whether we look away or lift others

up, whether we protect only what is ours or help create opportunities for those who might otherwise be left behind. “The measure of our lives isn’t in what we keep,” he said. “It’s in the hope we give.” For Dr. Cranston, support for a student is not simply charity or a financial gift. It is “an act of hope” that can change the trajectory of a life. “It opens a door for a young person who might never have imagined walking through it. It says, ‘You belong here. Your success matters to us.’”
