Gonzaga Middle School Welcomes Its First Class

From the President Dear Friends, We live in an increasingly challenging and often scary world where division, hatred, fear and suspicion are gaining a greater hold on social consciousness. The unfortunate result is that people tend to pull into narrowly defined “safety zones”, my group, my religion, my nation, my language, with the concomitant result of shutting out those who don’t fit simply because they are different. Difference and diversity become a threat to personal security and the resulting fear often expresses itself in angry or violent reactions.

That is why it is such a treat simply to contemplate the faces of the children on our front cover, the students of Gonzaga Middle School. The first thing that strikes me as I look at them is the diversity: white, black, indigenous, Asian, male, female. Together they have formed a caring community of students learning to live and work collaboratively for their mutual benefit.

It has been a source of immense joy for me to watch, albeit from something of a distance, the development of these students individually and as a group. They have overcome their initial shyness and discomfort, and have begun to take great pleasure and consolation in their learning and their achievements. They have embraced the notion of taking responsibility for others in their community, doing things as simple as baking cookies for the Mama Bear Clan to hand out to the homeless. They have tried new things and discovered new talents in themselves and in their classmates. All of this in an environment of respect and mutual acceptance.

One of the more exciting aspects of this for me is the realization that in the next two years the boys in this group will have the opportunity to apply to St. Paul’s, while the girls will have the option of applying to St. Mary’s. Their arrival will enrich our school and will enhance the already growing diversity of our own student population.

What Gonzaga is creating and what St. Paul’s has already worked hard to create is an environment in which the values of the Gospel become not mere theoretical propositions but concrete realities, enfleshed in the actions of the members of our community. Feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, giving drink to the thirsty, striving for peace and justice for all, standing with the weak and the marginalized, giving voice to the voiceless.

And this is not limited to our students. Parents, alumni, faculty and staff all have engaged in living the Gospel as members of our community. It is what makes St. Paul’s special. And it is why I loving being part of this community. Thank you all for your support, and may your generosity be returned to you a hundredfold.

Mitch Bourbonniere ’81 receives the 2016 Ignatian Challenge Award On Tuesday, November 1st, 2016, in front of more than 700 friends, family, alumni and supporters, St. Paul’s High School honoured Mr. Mitch Bourbonniere ’81 with the Ignatian Challenge Award.

The Ignatian Challenge Award, St. Paul’s High School’s highest honour, is presented at the annual Tribute Dinner to men and women who embrace the ideals of St. Ignatius Loyola, and reflect the character and qualities inherent in a Jesuit education at St. Paul’s High School: faith, generosity, a commitment to justice, and a willingness to serve.

President of St. Paul’s High School, Fr. Len Altilia, S.J., who has developed a close working relationship with Mitch through the creation of Gonzaga Middle School, described Mitch as a “gentle giant who has become a significant figure in North Winnipeg by his tireless efforts on behalf of the poor, the outcast, the marginalized. I came to see the depth of love and generosity in him that expresses itself in his respectful, diligent, and attentive care to the people who are most in need, particularly to the youth of the north end.”

Honourary dinner co-chairs, Paul ’80 and Anne Mahon introduced Mitch with personal reflections and testimonies about this year’s deserving award recipient. Paul, a classmate of Mitch who has remained friends for over 25 years, reflected on the three qualities that define men and women for others: “Being genuine, using gifts in service to others and, perhaps the most challenging, doing so selflessly. For Paul, Mitch is an embodiment of those three qualities and “truly describes the very way Mitch gives himself in the community.” Anne, who began working with Mitch several years ago on a project involving ex-gang members explained what makes Mitch so unique. “Mitch interacts non-judgementally and generously, seeing each person he meets – many who are marginalized, wounded, needy and poor – as human beings first.” Quoting one of Mitch’s best

friends and emcee for the evening, Phil Chiapetta ’75, Anne described how Mitch “really has a way of inspiring people to respond at a higher level. Mitch is always there, for so many youth who need exactly that – someone to be there for them.

Those countless times Mitch has invited a young man to come along with him at a moment’s notice, when the rest of us would take a less demanding road. That is Mitch’s legacy.”

Mitch, who was emotional and humbled by the evening, thanked his wife Linda and their six children for their support and being his “life rock.” Mitch recalled how St. Paul’s High School, more specifically the “Values” course helped him find his calling. One aspect of the Values course was service in the community, where Mitch volunteered at Rossbrook House, a place with which he has since maintained a relationship. Mitch concluded by acknowledging the heroes in his life that inspire him every day: Members of the Bear Clan and Mama Bear Clan, NDP MLA Nahanni Fontaine, Derrick Sigmar ’78, his brother Guy ’79, his mother, his niece Jessica and his eldest son Joseph, who teaches him humility every day.

Following the presentation of the Ignatian Challenge Award and St. Paul’s pin, friends of Mitch surprised him on stage and presented him with a traditional indigenous star blanket. Each blanket tells a story within the blanket through reflecting elements of nature. The star on the star blanket is the symbol of the morning star – the beginning of a new day/another day of life given by the Creator. The colours represent the sun (yellow), the sky and wind (blue), mother earth (green), grandmother spirit (purple), health (navy blue) and thunder (red).

The act of giving a star blanket is to demonstrate great respect, honour and admiration for an individual and holds the individual in high respect for their generosity and accomplishments. When a blanket is placed on an individual, it symbolizes wrapping the respect and admiration of everyone in the community around them physically and spiritually.

The Grade 9 White team had a successful season this year with a 3rd place finish in the Pembina Trails Athletic Association. The Grade 9 Maroon team finished league play with a 2nd place, 6-1 record, and faced Acadia in the league final, playing their best game of the season and capturing the PTAA league championship. The Varsity team travelled to UBC where they went undefeated in tournament play. The team also went undefeated in league play to once again win the WWAC banner. Provincial playoffs saw the Crusaders draw a tough seed of 8th in the province. After defeating Steinbach in 3 straight sets the Crusaders were up against the #1 Selkirk Royals.

Despite a valiant effort, the Crusaders fell to the Royals, ending their bid for a repeat provincial championship.

The Dramatic Society held four performances of Neil Simon’s comedy, “Fools,” from December 1-4, 2016, which was thoroughly enjoyed by enthusiastic and appreciative audiences.

The play, directed by Dave Beeston ’76 and Greg Matthew ’72, tells the story of the residents of the cursed village of Kulyenchekov.

The villagers live under the curse of “having no more intelligence than a bump on a log.” The villagers have hired a series of schoolmasters hoping that one of them will be able to finally break the curse. The resulting adventures lead to laugh after laugh. It all ends happily when the curse is broken and intelligence is restored.

Producer Joel Adair, designed and built a fascinating set straight from the coloured comics.

The Junior Varsity football team had a fun filled season with lots of excitement and odd twists where they truely learned about teamwork and the Armor of God. The AA football team was undefeated during the regular season in the Vidruk division although finished as semi-finalists, losing a close game 8-7 to the Steinbach Sabres. The season was considered very successful given 35 rookies out of a roster of 43. Led by many veteran grade 12 players, the AAA Crusaders started the season with two challenging games against the 4-time Saskatchewan champions, the LeBoldus Gold Suns, as well as 2015 champions, VMC Trojans. The AAA went undefeated during the regular season in the Potter division of the WHSFL eventually capturing the 2016 ANAVETS Bowl with a thrilling 17-8 victory.

Paulo joins the English department after 20 years in a high school setting, most recently as principal of St. Boniface Diocesan High School. Paulo is an accomplished musician and currently serves as Music Minister at St. Bernadette Parish. He is also active in his church as a member of the Knights of Columbus, a lector and presenter for marriage preparation ministry.

For over fifteen years, Laurence has served as a lecturer, instructor, and faculty member at numerous Canadian universities. Since 2009, Laurence has taught undergraduate courses in literature, religion, and history at the University of Winnipeg.

Laurence grew up in Toronto and has served as an organist, cantor and music director at a variety of parishes in Toronto and now Winnipeg.

Maria comes to St. Paul’s with over 25 years teaching experience having taught in schools in the Edmonton and Ontario Catholic School Districts as well as in the Public School Divisions in Ontario and Manitoba. Most recently, Maria taught Grade 9–11 French at St. Edmund Campion Secondary School in Ontario. Maria is passionate about her Catholic faith and has led school masses, liturgies, and retreats in her past teaching positions.

This year, twenty-eight grade 12 leaders planned the Freshman Retreat around the theme of ‘Lit’ - Living Ignatian Teachings. Over the course of the retreat, grade nine students heard from a number of different speakers including Mr. Watson, Mr. McMillan and Wajih Zeid ’11, each of whom spoke about their faith journey. Later on in the retreat, the grade nines had a chance to give their service in places like schools, seniors’ homes, and soup kitchens, providing a taste of the Christian Service program. After that, the boys had some well-deserved recreation time, leading towards the most important part of the retreat: the Friday evening prayer service hosted at one of the grade 12 leaders’ houses. The impression of the retreat was quite positive, and we look forward to even more successful retreats in the years to come.

The Crusader Cross Country program had another great year. With the addition of 17 grade 9’s, the Cross Country program has never looked brighter. The JV Cross Country team finished 1st in the Winnipeg West Athletic Conference and placed a very close 4th in provincials. This was an incredible achievement considering they were missing their top runner (injury) and were made up of all grade 9’s. The Varsity Cross Country team finished 2nd in the WWAC conference and place 4th at provincials only a few points behind the winner. Congratulations to over 30 athletes who trained and raced throughout the fall.

On November 1st, 2016 the Senior Jazz Band performed at the 23rd annual Tribute Dinner followed by the Grade 11/12 Concert Band’s performance on Remembrance Day. On December 6, 2016 the annual Advent/Christmas Concert was held in the Richardson Gymnasium featuring the grade level Concert Bands, the Junior & Senior Jazz Bands and the Junior & Senior Crusader Choirs. The ensembles had the opportunity to perform for the entire faculty and student body in the afternoon, as the evening performance was cancelled due to inclement weather. This spring, a number of art and band students will be travelling to Chicago. The trip is intended to provide the St. Paul’s students with an opportunity to gain a greater appreciation of world-class art and music.

After completing his Year 1 Practicum in the Math Department last year, Justin joins his alma mater as a full-time teacher.

Justin has also worked as a tutor at Sylvan Learning Centre and continues to teach Martial Arts in his spare time. Justin has been active in the community as a volunteer coach since 2011 for Crusader Football, has served as a Board Member of Making Waves Winnipeg and coached Special Olympics athletes.

We are pleased to welcome Meghan as a part-time Library Technician.

Meghan is a St. Mary’s Academy ('12) graduate and recently completed a Business Technology Diploma at Red River College. She is currently enrolled in the Business Technology Teacher Education Program where she will complete her degree next year while working to support and expand our Library program and services.

Madeleine is an experienced educator with nearly 18 years of teaching experience at schools in British Columbia, Québec, and Manitoba. Madeleine has taught a wide range of subjects in French language, ciences, mathematics, and physical education. For the past 12 years, Madeleine has taught Grades 7–9 mathematics and science in the French immersion program at École Charleswood School.

Gonzaga Middle School Welcomes Its First Class After two and a half years of planning and preparation, Gonzaga Middle School (GMS) opened its doors to its first Grade 6 class in September 2016 becoming the second Jesuit endorsed Nativity-model school in Canada.

GMS represents an outstanding educational opportunity for children from low income families in Winnipeg’s North End and North East Downtown.

The first “Nativity School” was founded by the Jesuits at the Mission of the Nativity in Lower Manhattan in 1971 to serve Latino boys from low-income families who were having difficulty succeeding in local high schools. The school day was lengthened, almost doubling the amount of time the boys would be in school were they in the local public school. The summer camp which the Center had been conducting was incorporated into the school curriculum, and, most importantly, Nativity made a commitment to follow their young alumni providing them with ongoing mentoring and support through high school and even on to college.

The effectiveness of the Nativity-model inspired educators dedicated to reaching underserved and vulnerable youth to found schools modelled after Nativity Mission Center School and by the late 1980s, new Nativity schools began opening. Since then, over 60 Nativity-model schools have opened to pursue similar missions across the United States and more recently, Canada.

These schools include all-boys, all-girls, and co-educational schools which are sponsored by a variety of religious groups, Catholic and non-Catholic, as well as one secular organization. These schools have shown remarkable results in improving educational outcomes for students.

The impetus to open a Nativity school in Winnipeg gained traction when Mr. Mark Chipman ‘78, visited Mother Teresa Middle School in Regina after the 2012 Tribute Dinner where the founders of MTMS, Mr. and Mrs. Paul and Carol Hill, were honoured. Mr. Chipman, a group of SPHS senior administrators and additional SPHS alumni visited MTMS and other Nativity schools in Milwaukee and Chicago. Following these visits, under the guidance of a

Steering Committee, an extensive year-long feasibility study was conducted to determine and understand the requirements of starting a school in the Winnipeg neighbourhoods of greatest need. The Point Douglas, followed by North-East Downtown neighbourhoods were found to have the poorest educational outcomes as the children in these neighbourhoods are the most affected by social and economic disadvantages.

GMS was incorporated in July 2015 with three founding members including Mr. Mark Chipman as Chairperson, Mr. Bob Puchniak ’65 as Vice-Chairperson and Mr. Steve Chipman ’69 as Secretary, providing the necessary startup financial support. They also serve on the Board along with the Fr. Len Altilia SJ, President of SPHS, Mrs. Connie Yunyk, the President of St. Mary's Academy (SMA), Dr. Jerome Cranston, Director of Student Success at UM, Dr. Niigaan Sinclair, Acting Head of Native Studies at UM, and Mr. Tom Lussier, past Principal of St. Paul’s hired as the first Executive Director and Principal of GMS. A school building renovation plan and implementation plan was established resulting in GMS opening in September 2016.

All Nativity-model schools follow a common set of values. They all commit to serving children from low-income families, providing a holistic education that addresses the academic, social, emotional, moral and spiritual growth of students, partnering with families, an extended school day and year (summer camps), following and supporting students through high school and post-secondary education, maintaining an effective administrative structure, adapting educational practices based on ongoing assessment and inquiry, and participating in school networks that support the Nativity-school model. Each school also adapts the Nativity-model to the local community being served.

GMS offers a Nativity-model opportunity for children from the North End and Downtown neighbourhoods. It gives parents who normally have few choices with an educational option that targets the needs of their children. In ad-

dition to meeting the commitments of a Nativity-model school described above, GMS provides door-to-door bussing, a strong nutrition program including breakfast, lunch and two snacks, a 1-to-1 laptop program for students, and many out of class and school enrichment educational activities.

For example, we are a Winnipeg Jet Hockey Academy school affording students the opportunity to learn to skate and develop hockey skills. GMS is also committed to promoting reconciliation by actively including indigenous and Treaty education and an inclusive approach to spirituality. Through our strong program, GMS supports students of all cultural and faith backgrounds becoming hopeful, confident, morally responsible leaders for love and service of their families and communities.

GMS started with a single Grade 6 class of 17 students this year and will add a Grade 7 class next year and a Grade 8 class the following year. After graduation, students will enroll in the high school of their choice. No mat-

ter what high school, public or independent, students attend, GMS staff will continue to follow students through their high school and post-secondary studies. Fortunately, both St. Mary’s Academy and St. Paul’s have committed to accepting and financially supporting students who choose to apply and meet the entrance requirements of each school. Qualified GMS applicants who are admitted will attend tuition-free and have additional supports such as uniforms, school supplies, lunch and other resources provided. This is a significant financial obligation on the part of both schools. To meet this increased need, St. Paul’s will need additional bursary and special funding support from the Crusader community. GMS will change lives by helping students break the cycle of poverty and develop toward their full potential – one student at a time. For GMS boys the possibility of going to St. Paul’s to further their education is an opportunity well worth your support.

ALUMNI SPEAKER SERIES

On Thursday October 20th, 2016, the St. Paul's High School Alumni Association welcomed Manitoba's 20th Premier and Former Canadian Ambassador to the United States, Gary Doer ’66, for a special lunchtime Alumni Speaker Series at the Exchange Restaurant at the MTS Centre.

With more than 70 St. Paul’s alumni in attendance, Mr. Doer spoke about his time as Premier of Manitoba from 1999 to 2009, leading a New Democratic government that called for balanced budgets, debt repayment, a freeze on taxes and the importance of health care. Following his time as Premier, Mr. Doer served 6 years as the Canadian Ambassador to the United States in Washington DC. After a forty-minute interview, the floor was opened up for a question and answer period in which Mr. Doer spoke often about his thoughts on the battle between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump as candidates to be the next President of the United States.

A huge thank you to Mr. Doer for fitting us into his very busy schedule and thanks also to Mark Chipman ’78 for offering up the Exchange Restaurant for us to hold our event. Lunch was terrific!

ALUMNI HAMPER DELIVERY It's December 14th, 2016, minus 30 with the wind chill and almost 40 St. Paul’s alumni, some with family members, are off to help the Winnipeg Christmas Cheer Board deliver Christmas Hampers to those in need throughout the city. In all, volunteers assist the Christmas Cheer Board deliver over 18,500 hampers every year, with each hamper including food, hats, mitts and toys for the kids.

Led buy Dan Kulas’10, we met up at 6.30pm, divided into groups and delivered almost 50 hampers over the next couple of hours.

There are so many people in difficult stages of their lives that require hampers, families receiving employment income assistance, the poor, single parents, the elderly and people living with disabilities. Family size can range from a single person to families of eight or more.

A hamper from the Christmas Cheer Board can be a light of hope in what might otherwise be a dark season for many. Doug Crabb ’88 recalls the smiles on the faces of a mother and son at the door on one of his deliveries being so appreciative that they gave his crew home made pork bites, that the mother was making, in a disposable container for them to take with them.

“They were delicious, and the Christmas cheer went both ways”, says Doug.

The entire experience reminds us of how fortunate we truly are!

The group gathered afterwards to share stories and enjoy some Christmas cheer. It was such a positive experience, and those in attendance claim they will be bringing more classmates next time around.

KAIROS LTF EVENING #4 On Tuesday, December 7, thirty-eight Kairos Alumni from years ’03 to ’16 gathered at the school for a fourth Kairos Live the Fourth Evening. Dan Kulas ’10 started off the evening sharing his perspectives about life after graduation and personal lessons learned. Compassion and empathy for those we encounter were strong messages that all of us took to heart as we listened to Dan describe his perspectives gained from the school and his work in social services. In small groups Kairosians considered their response and how those have grown as they enter post graduate years. The evening ended with some refreshments, pizza and a whole lot of camaraderie. Kairos Alumni please watch for the next LTF Evening and come out.

Catching up with Fr. Alex Kirsten, S.J. “Whatever you are doing, that which makes you feel most alive, that is where God is.”

- Ignatius of Loyola By: Johnston Smith '67 One of the curiosities about human thinking is our tendency to talk about institutions as if they had an existence all on their own. People say, “The police abuse their power” or “The Church is unwelcoming” or “The system grinds people up.” This sort of thinking tends to mask the fact that people have interactions not with the police, the Church or the system but, rather, with specific police officers, individual priests or with this or that bureaucrat.

Although St. Paul’s is an institution, none of the school’s students ever had an affirming relationship with or a fond memory of the institution; rather, what students have experienced are interactions with specific people… teachers, classmates, coaches…experiences which either built them up or --- (and I hope rarely) --- tore them down.

Recently the editors of this publication asked me to write a sort of “where are they now?” piece about Fr. Alexis F. Kirsten S.J. I welcomed the opportunity, for Fr. Kirsten is one of several Jesuits who has had a strong impact on me.

But before I write about what he has done since he left St. Paul’s in 1999, let me say a little about what he did when he was at St. Paul’s.

Fr. Kirsten was sent here 1979-1983 as counsellor and chaplain. From 198384, he was sent to tertianship, the final stage of a Jesuit’s formation and the prelude to making his Final Vows. Then, it was back to the school as a full-time teacher of science (particularly biology) and religion. During these years he accomplished much more than his classroom work. Together with Tom Ivory and Tom Lussier, he founded the Mass Choir, a group of musicians and singers whose talent added much to school liturgies. The Choir was composed of Crusader Football players and drama actors and crew and so Fr. Kirsten had the opportunity to really get to know students involved in these key school endeavors. He was also a great supporter of the school’s nascent rugby program. Those who worked with him, students and teachers, experienced his vitality, enthusiasm and energy. For Fr. Kirsten, there were no half-measures; whatever he was involved with got his whole being.

He also served in two other important areas, ones not directly involving students, but ones which had an important impact on them. For 15 years he served as a member of the school’s Board of Directors during a time when many important decisions were being made about the school’s operations.

He also served as leader of the Colloquium on the Ministry of Teaching, a program which shared with other Winnipeg Catholic teachers the wisdom and knowledge of 400 years of Jesuit education. Both of these experiences were very important for what he was next called to do.

In 1990, the Provincial Superior named him Local Superior of the Jesuit community and also SPHS Director of the Apostolate (today he would be called “the President.”) In the first role he served for a brief period and in the second until 1999. As head of the school, he was instrumental in laying the financial and community-development groundwork for what would become the Angus Reid Wing. He also led a number of important initiatives to make the school more available to families of limited financial means.

Fr. Kirsten’s leadership style was that of being a team-builder. I had the formative experience of being principal 1994-1999 and, along with Brian Murphy '67 and Kevin Booth '78 as vice-principals, and of course with Fr. Kirsten we formed what he always called the administrative team. Although we all were strong individuals, under his leadership all major decisions were taken collaboratively. I do not remember that even once Fr. Kirsten exercised his right to make a sole decision. He led the school’s Board in a similar way. His collaborative approach permeated all aspects of how the school operated.

From 1999 to 2004 the Provincial Superior assigned him the job of being Provincial Treasurer. During his time in this position, the Jesuit province made significant changes to its investment portfolio. From there for seven years he served as Director of the Martyrs’ Shine in Midland, Ontario. He oversaw the institution of a lay board of trustees for the Shrine and laid the financial groundwork for what was hoped would be the Welcome Centre for the Shrine. In 2011 he was set to become Pastor at the Jesuit parish on Manitoulin Island when he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. Treatment for this condition required that he return to Toronto for chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant, a process that took a year (2011-2012.)

When the cancer went into remission, the Provincial asked him to become the Director of the René Goupil Centre in Pickering, Ontario. This ministry takes care of older and infirm members of the Society of Jesus. He continued in that ministry until 2016 when the Provincial asked him to become a counsellor and spiritual director at the Manresa Spiritual Center in Pickering, a mission which continues as of this writing.

When I asked Fr. Kirsten what memories he had of St. Paul’s, he replied, “My fondest memories of SPHS are the teaching staff I was privileged to work with. We worked very hard but we also managed to have so much fun. They were a fine group of dedicated men and women, all masters of their craft. I was also blessed by getting to teach so many students and, in many cases, was also privileged to get to know many of their families.”

While Fr. Kirsten displayed undoubted talents as an administrator, especially in the areas of financial and human resource development, he is remembered most as a genuine person who shared himself totally with all who came into his life. His authenticity, his joie de vivre, his selfless service of others, these are what touched those who knew him.

In his Spiritual Exercises, St. Ignatius says, “Love is best reflected in deeds, not words.” I asked Fr. Kirsten if he had any words for the 2017 school community. He replied, “Remain ‘Men for Others’.” From him, these are not just words.

Ignatian Teach-In for Justice ally does have a massive influence on pertinent issues.

By Chas Meadows '17 The 20th annual Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice (IFTJ) took place from November 12-14 in Washington, D.C.. This year, the theme was “Mercy in Action”, inspired by Pope Francis’ Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy.

Chas Meadows ’17, Connor D. Stewart ’17, Brayden Juras ’17, Duncan Gowler ’17, and Riley Sierhuis ’18 along with Dr. Puchniak and Fr. Altilia attended IFTJ as St. Paul’s third delegation. After taking in some sights and sounds of Washington, our group was ready to start the Teach-In with a meeting of all of the Canadian schools, Loyola (Montreal), St. Bonaventure’s (St. John’s) and Campion College (Regina). As a group we discussed injustices we have seen in our respective regions of Canada, an activity to prepare us for what we would be looking into for the rest of the weekend.

With the Teach-In starting just four days after the American election, there was a large undertone of uncertainty throughout the Teach-In about how politics and society in the US would change as a result of the new president-elect, and this was a subject that was discussed quite a bit over the weekend. Even though many thought Trump’s victory would cause division at the Teach-In, it ended up bringing the thousands of participants closer together.

The weekend formally kicked off with speakers from the Ignatian Solidarity Network, the group running the Teach-In. A passionate talk about his work with Homeboy Industries, an organization providing crucial services to 15,000 former gang members and other marginalized individuals by employing and training them in various social initiatives, Fr. Greg Boyle, SJ, really set the tone for the weekend with his incredible passion for social justice that was evident to all in attendance.

During our first breakout session, Martin Maier, S.J. discussed the connections between Blessed

Oscar Romero and Pope Francis, having to do with their commitment to a “poor church for the poor”, exemplified in El Salvador. Having spent time in El Salvador on our school’s annual mission trip, it was a talk I found very close to the heart, and it was not only fantastic but inspiring to hear about El Salvador and Archbishop Romero’s situation from the perspective of a Jesuit who has actually spent an extended period of his life in El Salvador living and working with the poor. Maier’s example of Romero being “a bishop who is like a shepherd with the smell of sheep” vividly exemplifies how, if we are to fully serve the poor, we must be able to relate to them first.

This was a bit of an eye opening talk, especially seeing how much of it is applicable to our own poverty issue right here in Winnipeg.

Some of us then attended a session concerning the “No DAPL” (Dakota Access Pipeline) movement. We learned a lot about the cultural significance of the land that oil and energy corporations are trying to encompass, and why what they are trying to get away with is wrong. One of the most important takeaways from this breakout session was the power of peaceful protest and non-violence. The speakers, members of Big Rock reserve, discussed how the “meaning of life is for when we can settle conflicts with mind and heart, not fists”. This is something so important in today’s society, that we must realize with all the armed conflict going on worldwide, we must take a step back from what is going on and try to discuss and delve into what the issue really is, and what a real solution for all parties may look like. So many people don’t have the opportunity to realize that, which really affects the outcome of many big issues in our world today. The room was originally set up with 20 seats for audience, but within ten minutes the room was absolutely full with about 120 people inside and another 30 people waiting in the hall. This just went to show how important an issue this is. Now that the pipeline has been denied for a first time and is moving to court, it is very eye-opening to actually know that all of the peaceful protesting re-

The weekend concluded with the Ignatian Family Advocacy day. All the groups congregated in the Columbus Circle by the Senate, and we participated in a peaceful assembly and protest. Afterwards, the groups from all over the United States proceeded to go see their Senators and representatives to talk about issues they see present in their own communities that they would like to change. Seeing as we Canadians don’t have American representatives, a school from California graciously invited us to sit in on their meeting. We watched as the students talked to their representative and it showed us how easy it can be to just talk to someone to make a change in your own community. We learned so much on this last day of the Teach-In alone, especially how, if you want change, then you have to take the steps necessary to make that change.

All of us learned so much on this trip about various aspects of social justice and how we can incorporate them into our own lives and make change that needs to happen. Reflecting on this trip, it really reflected the “Grad At Grad” characteristics. We were open to growing by seeking the knowledge during IFTJ. We used our intellectual competence to expand on ideas we heard about. We saw how important religion is when it comes to social justice, because without the morals that we receive from religion, we wouldn’t feel compelled to make change on our own. We learned how being loving, reflecting God’s love unto others, can fuel so much change. Lastly, being committed to justice on this trip was huge, because that was the whole reason for the teach-in. You cannot just sometimes work for justice, if you want to see real change you have to fully commit to making it happen. We have been incredibly lucky to have this opportunity to learn so much about how we can change the world, whether that be in your community, or doing something like participating in St. Paul’s El Salvador mission. No matter how you do it, as long as you are being a man or woman for others, then you are truly living out your faith properly, and this trip helped us realize how important that is in all of our lives. I am incredibly thankful for the chance to attend this conference for the second time and to continue to learn about how not only to make change in the world, but to connect with like-minded students from all over the continent.

We have been given the tools necessary, and now it is up to us to take action, go forth and set the world on fire. I know that IFTJ has not only impacted the lives of those who attended, but it will also impact the many lives that will be helped by those who attended and will strive to make change.

Since retiring from the work force in 1998, Brian Kobylak has been pursuing his passion of coaching football. Brian spent several years in community ball, then with the midget league.

The last few years he has been coaching in the WHSFL winning 3 championships; in 2010 with Murdoch Mackay (AA), in 2012 with the Steinbach Sabres (A) and in 2016 again with Steinbach (AA). Brian and his wife have lived in the country for the past 46 years, but are moving back to the city later this year.

1975

On April 15th, 2017 (also his 60th birthday!), Nigel Hawkins will be retiring from the Royal Canadian Navy. He is utilizing the military transition program to train to be a Harley Davidson® Technician! Nigel rode his motorcycle from Victoria, BC, to his 20th reunion at St. Paul’s in 1995, to much interest from his fellow alumni. Nigel has always loved motorcycles and feels very grateful to have the opportunity to do what he loves!

1979

In July, Guy Bourbonniere graduated from the University of Manchester with a Global MBA. He was recently promoted to VP and General Manager for Eastern Canada with Trane/Ingersoll Rand.

Paul Henderson is teaching in Doha, Qatar- for the present at least. This is the 6th country on a sort of world tour of teaching abroad over the last quarter century. Although it has been a bumpy first few months, Paul has been coping.

In the meantime, a publisher in London has begun formatting his first novel for release some time in 2017, possibly by the summer. Entitled "Legacies", it is a work of historical fiction. If all goes swimmingly, it is to be the first of a trilogy.

1984

Rob Steidle took a job with Optum, a division of The United Heath Group (fortune 6 company) as the VP of the Advanced Analytics Lab-US hub.

Rob and his family live in Eden Prairie MN.

1989

Twenty seven years after graduation and having spent the past 10 years as a lending manager at a local credit untion, Rene Richot completed his Bachelor in Business from the Université de St. Boniface. In the same month, he also graduated with his CPA, CGA accounting designation. Together with his wife, Rene started his own business called Dinero Enterprises Ltd. that helps fill the need for small businesses.

1996

Corporate Tax Lawyer, Wesley Novotny, has been made partner at the Bennett Jones law firm in Calgary, Alberta.

1998

Eric Petz and his wife Kelly welcomed a baby boy named Gavin in August 2016. He joins big brother Callum in the Petz family. Eric also joined Vanrx Pharmasystems in 2016 as the company's marketing leader. Vanrx makes robotic systems for pharmaceutical manufacturing and is based in Vancouver.

2014

This fall, Bruce Akubukaka will be relocating to London, England to pursue a three year law degree at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Bruce hopes to focus on criminal law, eventually practicing as a barrister. He has spent the past 2.5 years in Brandon playing volleyball and pursuing a degree in Political Science.

2000

Andrew Synyshyn graduated from U of M Law School in 2010 and he and his wife welcomed their first daughter that year. In 2011, they moved to Brandon to practice law. Andrew worked for Meighen Haddad LLP from 2011 until December 2016 at which time he opened his own practice (AJS Law) which focuses solely on criminal defence and child protection law. Andrew and his wife now have 3 kids (a 6 year old and two 2.5 year old twins).

2003

Stefan Bars and Allison Komishon (SMA '04) were married at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Toronto Ont. on September 16th, 2016.

2007

This past September, Creagh Briercliffe received a Master of Science degree in Statistics from the University of British Columbia. Creagh has elected to stay at UBC to pursue a Ph.D in Statistics.

Also at UBC, James Struthers is in his final year of law school. Fellow alumnus, Micah Goldberg now practises law in Vancouver after graduating from the University of Victoria in 2015

2008

In February 2016, Brandt Butt and his mother started a non-contact boxing program for people living with Parkinson’s disease. They now have over twenty participants fighting back against their disease, getting out to socialize and ultimately living better!

2013

Last year, Emilio Abiusi started Drop Zone, a sports drop-in program run through a partnership between the police service, community groups, private businesses, and individuals. Drop Zone exists to create unity between the community and the police service in order to transform Winnipeg’s core into a safer and healthier community. More info: http://dropzonewpg.com/ Taeron Lewis is playing NCAA hockey in Vermont for the Norwich University Cadets who are currently ranked number 2 in the nation. In his freshman year he has carved out a significant role in the lineup being a key faceoff man and penalty killer, as well as spending some significant time on the power play. Taeron is taking a 4 year business degree and is inline for All American Academic honours!
