Friends of Music

Welcome to a new season of music at St. Paul’s. From the time of Walter Blodgett and forward to the present, fine music has played its part in forming the voice of our faith and of the wider community. St. Paul’s has hosted countless concerts, recitals, and special events, and has been a leader in liturgical music through its choirs and instruments. The Friends of Music at St. Paul’s is being formed to continue to make possible these concerts and recitals into the future.

Concert offerings at St. Paul’s occur largely outside the operating budget and thus require financial support. The enclosed brochure outlines the complete season, but our website contains all the details for the season. Please visit our website often for completely up-to-date information: www. stpauls-church.org/concerts.

I hope you will help us continue these successes in years to come by becoming a member of the Friends of Music. It is only through your generosity that we are able to take on such an ambitious endeavor. Please consider becoming a donor to assure continued support for these concerts.

Carillon Dedication Concert

Sunday, September 24, 6 p.m.

Family and friends are invited to attend a carillon concert to dedicate our recently enlarged carillon on Sunday, September 24, at 6 p.m. Bring a picnic and enjoy the music on the lawn, or just come and enjoy the beautiful sonorities as they spread over the Heights. Our guest performer that evening will be Tiffany Ng, Associate Professor of Carillon and University Organist at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Dr. Ng is a star in her field. She has played at festivals around the globe including the 2018 University of Chicago Rockefeller Carillon New Music Festival, 2018 Canberra Carillon Festival, 2017 University of Michigan Bicentennial, 2015 UC Berkeley Campanile Centennial, 2014 Stanford CCRMA anniversary festival, the 23rd International Carillon Festival at Bok Tower Gardens, Florida, and the 2014 International Carillon Festival Barcelona.

The carillon at St. Paul’s was installed in 1929 in the 165-foot tower that was donated by Laura Price Briggs. It had originally been planned as a carillon with 25 bells, but the Great Depression interrupted its completion. It wasn’t until 1953 that the instrument was completed to its original design. It remained that way until late this spring when it was enlarged to standard concert carillon size of 47 bells. A single financial gift facilitated this expansion. St. Paul’s is very grateful for this gift from William and Laurie Buss that allows our carillon to sing along with only five other concert carillons in the state of Ohio. We are also fortunate and grateful to our own carillonneur since 1990, David Osburn, Jr., for so faithfully climbing the long wooden stairs to the playing chamber each and every Sunday morning regardless of weather or conditions to bring the joyful music of our bells to life.
