The artist this month is English Teacher, Mr. Matt Pinero. Matt joined Saint Paul’s School in 2014. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of New Orleans as well as a Masters of Lasallian Leadership from the St. Mary’s University of Minnesota. In addition to teaching English, Matt is the head wrestling coach for Saint Paul’s and was recently named Coach of the Year for both the District and Parish levels. In his free time, Matt enjoys painting.

Education: 1994 Graduate of LSU Family: Married to Jeanine Addison Riecke of Amite, LA; daughter, Addison E. Riecke Occupation: CEO of a family-held parent company that owns multiple other companies; such as construction, real estate development and management, and a Louisiana chartered bank.

What do you value most about your Saint Paul’s education and experience?

My education leaving Saint Paul’s was so strong and had such depth, that when I entered LSU in 1989, I was ahead of the curve in most of my classes. This allowed me to have a small buffer in the “Freshman Fun” of my first year that did not negatively impact my grades too adversely.

As to the many experiences received at St. Paul’s, I most value the diversity we encountered during those years. In the 1980’s, we were a small school (under 500 students if my memory serves.) that was comprised mostly of middle and upper middle-class families. BUT, because we were a boarding school at the time, we lived, we learned, we played sports… We bonded with people from South and Central America, New York, New Mexico, all over Louisiana, and overseas. That diversity helped us to break down the walls of prejudice that were prevalent in the 1980’s, at an early time in our lives, that may seem ridiculous to kids today. Those bonds still exist as made evident in the class reunions and school wide alumni events we have enjoyed over the past 30 years.

Do you have any family members currently attending or who have attended Saint Paul’s? My father Eddie’ 62. My older brother, Bryant ‘84. his son, Devin ‘14, and my younger brother, Denis ‘92.

What advice would you give to current students or young alumni? Don’t forget where you came from or who helped you along the way. In school, in business, and in life, there will be a handful of experiences and people that help shape, mold, and develop your character into who you become as a man. Return the favor to those coming behind you as well as to those that have helped you when they need or appear to need help.

Why do you continue support the Saint Paul’s mission: The values, the education, the experiences, the faith in GOD, and the unity that Saint Paul’s instills in the young men, who will be the leaders of tomorrow, CAN NOT be replicated anywhere else.

In what ways do you continue to be involved with Saint Paul’s at this phase of your life? We sponsor the Crawfish Cook-off every year. I also help in the planning of the Class of 1989 reunions.

Why would encourage young men to consider attending Saint Paul’s? The education, the history and tradition, the friendships that will become life-long bonds, and the real beginning of a relationship with GOD. What would you describe as your greatest takeaway from Saint Paul’s? The friendships I made during my time at Saint Paul’s that have withstood the test of time and I am still enjoying them today. Whether they were in my class, older, or younger than me, there is a bond that exists between all of us that attended Saint Paul’s together.

Is there anything you would do differently with your Saint Paul’s experience if given the opportunity to go back in time? I would have been more involved in my 9th, and 10th grade years. My first and last 2 years were really more enjoyable due to sports and extracurricular activities. My circle of friends widened and my desire to be involved greatened. I should have embraced leaving my comfort zone during those earlier years.

Alumni News Taylor Brett ‘07 - During so many sad events, we rejoice in the wedding of the son of Mrs. Liz Brett, Spanish Department Chair. Mrs. Brett wrote: We have been planning Taylor and Anne Kelly’s wedding for over a year. It was going to be a huge wedding. God had other plans. On Saturday, April 4, instead of 300 people, there were about 10, but it couldn’t have been more perfect. Just the immediate family was present with a small “reception” at their home after the ceremony. The celebration was about their commitment to each other.

Holy Week Traditionally during the week before Easter, Saint Paul’s students witness two wonderful demonstrations of faith to commemorate Holy Week and prepare for Easter Sunday. On Wednesday, the Marian Players perform the Passion Play for the students and faculty. On Holy Thursday, the student body assembles in the New Gymnasium of the Gene Bennett Sports Complex for the Mandatum – the washing of the feet prayer service. The prayer service is led by campus minister, Mr. Jeff Ramon, and the Student Council President and Vice-President wash the feet of students from each grade level and faculty-staff members.

This year, during the coronavirus epidemic and the “stay at home” order, things are a little different.

Our students still observe the Mandatum at home washing the feet of their family members.

Additionally, the students, faculty and staff, and parents, were encouraged to participate in a ‘virtual’ stations of the cross. As intended, the Core Principles of Lasallian teachings, particularly, Faith in the Presence of God, still holds true even when not in community.

Saint John Baptist de La Salle …Pray For Us

Holy Week (continued) This Good Friday with stay at home orders still in place, faithful were unable to attend church services on one of the holiest days of the year in the Christian tradition. But residents of the River Oaks subdivision in Covington, took to the streets on Good Friday to take part in a special observance of Christ’s death put on by high school seniors and their families.

“This all came about on Palm Sunday, when it dawned on me that you and Brady [Meibaum] had been involved in the passion play for years and you weren’t going to have that for senior year,” said Mrs. Jennifer Meibaum. As is tradition, Saint Paul’s celebrates Holy Week to the fullest. All week Priests are brought in to hear confessions at lunch, there’s a Mandatum assembly where students and faculty take part in a feet washing ceremony, and the week culminates in the Passion Play. Having realized all of these Saint Paul’s traditions were not going to be done amidst this time of crisis, Mrs. Meibaum put together an audacious plan for a neighborhood wide Stations of the Cross.

“At first, I reached out to some Catholics in the neighborhood, and then people recommended other families with seniors. Even non-Catholics were interested in learning about Stations of the Cross and what it means.” She began contacting families to see who would be willing to make a station at their house and quickly realized that there were enough seniors in the neighborhood from various high schools to pull it all off. From the front of River Oaks to the very back, families with seniors put together yard signs displaying each station of Christ’s Passion. Saint Paul’s students were involved in the project but seniors from Archbishop Hannan, Christ Episcopal, and Mandeville High all came together to make the event possible.

On that Friday morning, families, friends, and neighbors walked, biked, golf carted, and even ran the 4-mile course, stopping to pray at each station. “It was indescribable,” said Meibaum, “the text messages and the Facebook responses, just seeing people’s faces walking by that whole day was so blessed and touching. I felt like we got more out of it as a family seeing so many other people experience it. It was a return I didn’t expect.” What was more beautiful was “most people did the stations with their whole family,” she said. For all the disjointedness and separation, the entire world has experienced as a result of COVID-19, here in this neighborhood on the Northshore of Louisiana, families were brought together and united by the cross and the miracle of Easter.

Holy Week (continued) When asked about how organizing this event affected her own faith, Meibaum said, “For me personally, this is way out of my comfort zone putting my religion out there for other people. It’s usually a personal thing. It was a stretch for me, and it made me realize that you really can wear your religion in your front yard and let everyone see it. It has taken my faith to being a little more open.”

There is no doubt that the other dozens of families who took part in the stations felt the same way about being so open and demonstrative with their faith. This is a neighborhood of hundreds of people that rarely get together and are not well connected on any kind of personal level. But with Stations of the Cross, neighbors were brought together by faith and were able to share something that is frequently relegated to remaining within a place of worship or at home.

Some of the signs families created included pictures or a tribute to the senior in their family. Every sign was given a set of balloons with the colors of the school that each student attends. All over the country people are bemoaning the losses or potential loss of the graduating class of 2020 as a result of staying home during these final, treasured months of high school. Mrs. Meibaum is the mother of Brady, who is in Saint Paul’s class of 2020, and Cooper, who graduated from Saint Paul’s in 2018. “I think how we’re handling this experience is focusing on what still could happen. We’re enjoying being at home all together. We’re staying hopeful and focusing on the positives and not on what Cooper had and what Brady doesn’t,” she said, “One thing too that I am very grateful for is that the students are being challenged and taught, whereas that might not be the case for other seniors. I feel that we’re very blessed, whether the kids know it or not. As a parent, I feel very thankful to Saint Paul’s that the students are being challenged everyday until the end of school.”

This Good Friday, so many residents were moved by the sign of faith that took the form of streets filled with families observing the Way of the Cross. It honored the Saint Paul’s tradition of faith in the presence of God, and paid tribute to not just the Saint Paul’s seniors in the neighborhood, but the entire class of 2020. However, as powerful as seeing the streets filled with families, it was just as potent seeing the streets empty on the following Easter Sunday. Without a car in sight or a solitary dog walker afoot, one could only assume that every neighbor had turned to their families within their homes to celebrate Easter and the Risen Christ.

National Merit The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Quality Education Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®)—which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.6 million entrants each year—and by meeting published program entry and participation requirements. Of the 1.6 million entrants, some 50,000 with the highest PSAT/NMSQT® Selection Index scores (calculated by doubling the sum of the Reading, Writing and Language, and Math Test scores) qualify for recognition in the National Merit® Scholarship Program. In September, these high scorers are notified through their schools that they have qualified as either a Commended Student or Semifinalist.

In early September, about 16,000 students, or approximately one-third of the 50,000 high scorers, are notified that they have qualified as Semifinalists. Five of our students were recognized as Semifinalists.

Recently, Saint Paul’s School was notified that four of our Semifinalists had advanced to be Finalists.

Beginning in March and continuing to mid-June, NMSC notifies approximately 7,500 Finalists that they have been selected to receive a Merit Scholarship® award. Merit Scholarship awards are of three types: National Merit® $2500 Scholarships, Corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards or Collegesponsored Merit Scholarship awards. Excerpt from NMSC Website.

“I Feel Home” Saint Paul’s School President Brother Ray Bulliard, FSC is quite fond of music appreciation as well as tradition particularly regarding his President’s Assemblies. In 2004, senior Kramer Johnson gave what would become a legendary performance of the OAR classic, “I Feel Home” to the student body.

His message was clear -- Saint Paul’s was home to him. Every year since Kramer graduated, Bro. Ray has eloquently and fittingly used the song as his selected musical piece for the post Homecoming Assembly.

In 2015, when the class members of 2020 were in eighth grade, Kramer returned to Saint Paul’s for a surprise visit at Brother Ray’s assembly. While covertly stashed away in the training room with the door slightly cracked, Kramer listened intently, to “I Feel Home” playing in the background. He was able to candidly soak in the words that Bro. Ray had been conveying about him to our students for all these years. “… and he sat right here, and he played this song….and he sang from the heart because to him Saint Paul’s was another home….It was such a powerful moment that I said ever year at Homecoming I would tell the story of Kramer singing for us….” On that cue, Kramer emerged into the back of the gymnasium, soon after being noticed by the omniscient Bro. Ray who was found in a rare state of being “lost for words.” So moved were the students, that the 2019-2020 Student Council Vice-President, Luke Vargas, asked classmate, Connor Charles, to perform a version for Leadership Week 2020.

Connor has quite an aptitude for music which runs in his family. He plans to attend McNeese State University in the fall and major in Agricultural Business. While he does not intend to actively pursue a future in music, he will continue to play and would not pass up the right opportunity!

Stuff the Bus, Virtual Style

Normally, at this point in the year, Saint Paul’s School, Our Lady of the Lake School, Mary Queen of Peace School, St. Peter’s School, Archbishop Hannan High School, and St. Scholastica Academy would all be preparing for the annual “Stuff the Bus” food drive, where thousands of pounds of food are donated to the Northshore Food Bank. However, with schools being officially closed until Apr. 30, and more than likely beyond that date, the food bank will be losing out on one of its biggest donation events right before summer, one of the most difficult times of the year for food banks.

To aid the community amidst this crisis, the Saint Paul’s student council has started a social media initiative to help generate the funds and food that the NFB so desperately needs. For more information on how to donate to the Northshore Food Bank, refer to The Paper Wolf Article.

Distance Learning During this crisis, our students are receiving instruction through the internet, and although the students and faculty are both missing the daily interaction that happened on our school campus, instruction is still taking place. However, this is not the first time Saint Paul’s School has been called upon to meet the needs of its students through distance instruction. In 1955, Barton Hebert, Jr. was stricken with polio and left paralyzed from the waist up. The once athletic sophomore lived on an “iron lung” (A negative pressure ventilator is a mechanical respirator which enables a person to breathe on his or her own in a normal manner, when muscle control is lost, or the work of breathing exceeds the person's ability) at the New Orleans Polio Center for several months and then moved to Houston for more extensive treatment and rehabilitation.

When he was able to return to Covington, he wanted to complete high school at Saint Paul’s and fortunately the Hebert’s lived across the street from campus and a dedicated phone line was installed to allow Barton to participate in classes. He devoted himself to his studies, with books propped above his head and an assistant to turn the pages, he learned to type with his toes, and submitted excellent work to his teachers. His teachers took the Lasallian mission to heart and visited Barton often to provide any assistance needed. His chemistry teacher even performed experiments at his home so Barton could observe through a mirror. Not only did Barton graduate from Saint Paul’s, he graduated from college and became a broker for E. F. Hutton for many years as a successful stockbroker, all while in a wheelchair with a ventilator and his dedicated assistant Murray James at his side.

So, as we progress through the COVID-19 Crisis, and our students have distance learning, we know Google Meetings, and Zoom are much better versions of distance education than simply listening to a lecture over a dedicated phone line. Our faculty has embraced the technology that exists today and strives to provide instruction and feedback to their students. Our students are responsive and diligently attending classes and submitting the required assignments. Our families have embraced this new school experience and are encouraging their sons to continue with their academic success. We also know from this experience that we can complete the task at hand and move on as successful teachers and students. It is not the same experience, but as Saint Paul’s has proven over the past 109 years, it is what needed to be done.

Flu Epidemic of 1918 With the campus closure of Saint Paul’s due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the SPS Online program fully operational, students and faculty are left wondering how this virus will impact the rest of their lives. Over a century ago, a nearly identical situation caused the school to respond to an outbreak, but the response looked much different than it does today.

For Saint Paul’s in 2020, this decision consisted of almost 900 students being transferred to an online curriculum so that they could stay home in order to prevent the spread of the virus. However, Saint Paul’s in 1919 did not have the available resources and technology to teach from a distance, so the students continued to attend school and were still taught by the Brothers. In January of 1919, just two months before the outbreak of the flu hit the New Orleans area, World War 1 ended. Starting on January 2nd in 1919 with the former rector of Saint Paul’s, Father Augustine, falling ill due to the flu, an outbreak developed and broadened at the boarding school until thirty students and six brothers were indisposed. The flare-up at the small school lasted about two weeks, and by some miracle, everyone at the school made a full recovery.

Unfortunately, the outbreak of the influenza virus took many Saint Paul’s students out of classrooms for almost the entire spring semester in 1919, seeing as many boarders did not return to school following the Christmas holidays as a cautionary measure in the face of the virus. However, the number of students steadily increased throughout the semester until it reached sixty in April. Although the Brothers had nearly no ways of instructing their students during this time, their prayer and trust in God’s plan kept the school alive and thriving.

The situation that Saint Paul’s students have been placed in during 2020 with the coronavirus epidemic is arguably much less of an inconvenience. The Online SPS program, which virtually simulates an in-class experience, has been readily adopted by the students. The teachers ask students to take notes and email them for an assignment, they host online video calls that make it easy to teach a new lesson, they upload notes that the students must take in preparation for an assessment, and they post online tests. All of these are ways in which Saint Paul’s can continue its Lasallian Quality Education Core Principle without face-to-face interaction. In addition, a message is sent out to all students and faculty fifteen minutes before the school day begins with a link to the morning prayer so that the school community can practice Faith in the Presence of God during this tumultuous time. To continue to live out Concern for the Poor and Social Justice, Saint Paul’s has also initiated an online social media food drive to encourage the donation of funds and food for the Northshore Food Bank during this Holy Week. The different responses to the virus outbreaks in the Saint Paul’s community 101 years apart exhibit just how important Lasallian education is to the school. If the Brothers in 1919 had not been determined to build up Saint Paul’s and fight through some of the toughest years that the school has endured, students in 2020 would not be able to enjoy the first-class Lasallian institution that is Saint Paul’s School.

Celebrating 301 Years The Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools was founded by St. John Baptist de La Salle in 1680 in France. He was a pioneer in founding training colleges for teachers, reform schools for delinquents, technical schools, and secondary schools for modern languages, arts, and sciences. His work quickly spread through France and after his death, continued to spread across the globe.

Saint La Salle died on Good Friday, April 7, 1719, at the age of 68. At the time of his passing, there were 23 active Brother communities and 100 brothers. In 1950, because of his life and inspirational writings, he was made Patron Saint of all those who work in the field of education. John Baptist de La Salle inspired others how to teach and care for young people, how to meet failure and frailty with compassion, how to affirm, strengthen and heal. At the present time, the Lasallian mission is present in 80 countries around the world, with 4,000 De La Salle Christian Brothers (Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools) and 90,000 Lasallian Partners serving one million young people in 1,000 educational ministries.

On April 7, we celebrate the 301st anniversary of Saint John Baptist de La Salle’s rise to eternal life.

Typically, a President’s Assembly is held, and the student body joins the faculty, staff, and administration in singing the traditional hymn, Honneur à Toi, that honors De La Salle. Honneur a Toi was first printed in in Recueil de Cantiques Anciens et Nouveaux (1889 edition). It was one of two hymns composed to mark the beatification of John Baptist de La Salle in 1888. Since no assembly could be held this year, Bro. Ken Boesch, FSC, sings the hymn for our benefit. Saint John Baptist de La Salle, Pray for Us. Live Jesus in Our Hearts Forever!

CARES Act and Charitable Giving The CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security) Act, signed into law on March 27, 2020, provides economic relief to businesses and individuals affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. If you are considering making charitable donations in tax year 2020, we’ve outlined some important provisions of the law (H.R. 748-55 to 748-66) that may benefit you. The specific provisions of the CARES Act related to charitable giving are referenced by page and section of the bill, for your convenience.

*** Before acting on any of the provisions highlighted here, please consider discussing them with your professional advisors to determine their applicability to your individual tax situation. *** $300 Charitable Deduction for All Even if you do not itemize deductions on your taxes, your gift can reduce your 2020 taxable income by up to $300 ($600 for couples). This is a special benefit for 2020 to encourage giving to causes that are impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. (H.R. 748-65; Sec. 2204) 100% Deduction Allowance for Cash Gifts to Charities For the 2020 tax year only, individuals may deduct cash gifts up to 100% of their adjusted gross income (AGI) compared to the typical 60% allowance. (H.R. 748-65; Sec. 2205) IRA Distributions for Donors Age 70½ or Older Though the required minimum distribution (RMD) is temporarily suspended for 2020, gifts from an IRA rollover or qualified charitable distribution (QCD) will continue to reduce your taxable income (up to $100,000), especially if you do not itemize your deductions. (H.R. 748-63; Sec. 2203) Cash Contribution Limit from Corporations Increased to 25% in 2020 The taxable income limit that applies to cash contributions made by corporations is increased from 10% to 25% for 2020. The usual 10% limit still applies to other charitable contributions by corporations, and those contributions reduce the 25% limit dollar-for-dollar. Qualified cash contributions in excess of the 25% limit can be carried forward for up to five years under the usual limits.

Prayer Amid a Pandemic Jesus Christ, you traveled through towns and villages “curing every disease and illness.� At your command, the sick were made well. Come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the coronavirus, that we may experience your healing love.

Heal those who are sick with the virus. May they regain their strength and health through quality medical care.

Heal us from our fear, which prevents nations from working together and neighbors from helping one another. Heal us from our pride, which can make us claim invulnerability to a disease that knows no borders.

Jesus Christ, healer of all, stay by our side in this time of uncertainty and sorrow. Be with those who have died from the virus. May they be at rest with you in your eternal peace.

Be with the families of those who are sick or have died. As they worry and grieve, defend them from illness and despair. May they know your peace.

Be with the doctors, nurses, researchers and all medical professionals who seek to heal and help those affected and who put themselves at risk in the process. May they know your protection and peace.

Be with leaders of nations. Give them the foresight to act with charity and true concern for the well-being of the people they are meant to serve. Give them the wisdom to invest in long-term solutions that will help prepare for or prevent future outbreaks. May they know your peace, as they work together to achieve it on earth.

Whether we are home or abroad, surrounded by many people suffering from this illness or only a few, Jesus Christ, stay with us as we endure and mourn, persist and prepare. In place of our anxiety, give us your peace.

GiveNOLA The Global GivingTuesday event is currently scheduled for Tuesday, May 5; however, due to the effects of COVID-19 on the Greater New Orleans area, the seventh annual GiveNOLA Day has been moved to Tuesday, June 2, 2020 from 12:00 am to midnight. This is a 24-hour online giving event for the 13-parish Greater New Orleans region. Advance donations may be made online starting Tuesday, May 5.

Due to the impact of COVID-19 on our community, many families are facing hard financial decisions about providing a catholic education to their children or providing for their basic needs, such as housing and food.
