Editorial Ruairi Kavanagh @stpatsprogramme
Good evening, And welcome to our last edition of this strangest of seasons. We have worked hard to put together an action packed edition, hopefully our last one in a digital format, but who knows. There's a lot of uncertainty in the world today but what is certain is that we do have an outside chance of qualifying for Europe this evening, granted it is out of our hands but it does add a layer of interest to a November Monday evening. I think we have all been heartened by some of our play the last two games, so let's hope it gives us a platform to go and achieve something. I'd like to thank everyone who helped on the programme throughout the season. Particular thanks as always to Joe O'Rourke for his endless design and content ideas which keep the magazine looking fresh and engaging. I'd also like to thank Karl, Anthony, David and Tom O'Mahony at St Patrick's Athletic for their input and help. In terms of contributors I would like to
thank Ronan O'Flaherty, Jimmy Edwards, Stephen Bennett, John Owens, James Fenton, Dermot Looney, Pat O'Callaghan, Sean Creedon, Kieran Coughlan and Ian Templeman for their tireless work and reliability. We would also like to welcome Sean Brennan to our ranks, he will be writing on European football and makes his debut this evening - have a read! We realise we are missing a female voice in the programme, so if you are one, please do get in touch! Until next season, when I hope you are holding this programme in printed format, sitting in Richmond Park with your friends, family and loved ones. The future can still be bright. Until next season, stay safe and up the Saints!
All the best, Ruairi Kavanagh Editor

President’s Welcome Tom O’Mahony @tomsaintpats Good evening, wherever you may be, and welcome to our last virtual programme in this most bizarre of seasons. A big welcome also to the players, management and supporters of Bohemians FC, who must be warmly congratulated for a very impressive league campaign which has seen them comfortably take the runners-up spot.
senior players who rank among the very best in the league. Our team is a work in progress, but this season has shown clearly the areas in which we need to strengthen, and I can assure you that is what we will do.
Our last two performances, against the other two of the "big three", have shown the potential in our own team. There was general agreement, including among Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers supporters, that in each game we were the better team and played the better football. We were defensively more solid and more creative in midfield. However, the achilles heel that has dogged us all season, an inability to turn dominance into goals, meant we had to settle for 2 points rather than the 6 that would have put us in a very strong position in the race for the final European spot. Our fate is no longer in our own hands, so we can only aim for a win tonight and let's see how the results fall.
As always at the end of the season, I want to give a special thanks to the many volunteers whose efforts are essential to the club on so many levels. The demands have been different this year but everyone has pitched in and helped to get us through the challenges we faced.
It's interesting that our four best performances of the season, in my opinion, have come in the matches against Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk, the clubs which (with no disrespect to tonight's opposition) have the strongest squads and most resources in the league. For all that, neither of them managed to beat us. It tells me that we are not far short of what's required to compete with them, and Bohs, for honours. We have some exceptional young players, who will get even better with experience, along with a few more
I would like to be able to tell you that normal business will resume in February but sadly I can't. At this point, nobody knows when it will be possible to admit some or all spectators to grounds again, so it looks like the new season will begin as a streamed league. This has very serious financial implications for clubs. Various supports have been available in recent months to enable clubs to resume playing, and there's a lot of work going on with the FAI at present to see what support will be available for next season. We will keep supporters informed of developments through our website and social media. Your support is always appreciated but in the current circumstances it's needed more than ever. Enjoy the game! The Dugout Stephen O’Donnell and Alan Mathews
We finally arrive at the final day of the season and, while the 'Played' column in the table only displays half the number of games originally anticipated, it has been good to see out the season, albeit in a scaled-back way. If we are to sign off with a victory, the team will have to be at its best against a Bohemians side that has already secured a runners-up finish. I would like to welcome Keith Long, his players and everybody associated with Bohemian FC to Richmond Park. We go into the game in good spirits following successive draws against Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers, the champions of 2019 and 2020 respectively. Following the disappointment in Ballybofey, I was very pleased with the way we bounced back. That said, the performances have been good for quite some time and I feel we just witnessed a continuation of that in the last two games. All we lacked was a killer instinct in front of goal. Against Dundalk, I felt we were
the better team. Though they took the lead, the players kept at it and and the equaliser was well merited when it finally arrived. The players were disappointed that we hadn't won the game and that was again the case against Shamrock Rovers on Wednesday. Once again, we were the better team and probably deserved all three points on the night. If I was to sum up the last two games in a nutshell, I would probably say that I was very happy with the performances but disappointed that we didn’t come away with all six points on offer. It feels as though the end of the season is coming at the wrong time for us. The performances have been very encouraging and, after the stop-start nature of the year, it feels as though we are just about to get into our stride. I look around the squad and see a number of players who have made significant progress this year. We have a strong group of players here and I am excited

about the prospect of them pushing on next season. The age profile is young but we also have a nice bit of experience too. It's something of a cliché to say you want that blend of youth and experience, but we have that and I'm excited about what lies ahead. While I referenced looking forward to next season, that won’t truly be the case until after this evening’s game. We still have an outside chance of qualifying for Europe, which would be a fantastic bonus if it happened. It has been a challenging year for everybody and I know that it has been difficult for supporters not being able to attend games. With a bit of luck, 2021 will be much kinder than 2020 and we will be in a position to welcome supporters back into grounds. The team knows that you will be getting behind them in your own way this evening and we desperately want to repay that support with a victory. Enjoy the match, Stephen O’Donnell

Oh My Word! Ronan O’Flaherty @ronanoflaherty
Everybody wants to be the party pooper when the opportunity presents itself. Certainly in a sporting context, anyway. Who wouldn't want to beat the newlycrowned champions on their coronation night? With the season generally all but over on such occasions, victory would lay down a marker for next year and give supporters hope during the long days, weeks and months of the off-season. Some say it's the hope that kills you, but surely better to be hopeful than hopeless. Think back to Chelsea at Anfield in late July, on the night Liverpool were scheduled to be presented with the Premier League trophy. So desperate was Frank Lampard to win that he was more worked up than any of his players. It didn't do his troops much good, either, as Liverpool won 5-3. But it was clear how desperate Lampard was to spoil the party. Pat's were cast in the 'Chelsea' role at Tallaght Stadium on Wednesday. Well, sort of. The team wore red, not blue, and the manager stayed loyal to his calm demeanour over a chest-thumping, hyper-aggressive approach. Still though, in his own understated way, he would surely have loved to spoil the party. Shamrock Rovers went into the game ready for a celebration, which is entirely understandable on the night of the trophy presentation. It was much the same for Pat's when they took on Derry City at Richmond Park on coronation night. But that was 2013 and this is 2020. In the time of a pandemic, parties are far more restrained events, if they can even be considered events at all.
8
At the start of RTÉ's live broadcast, presenter Peter Collins outlined, in not so subtle terms, that the game was being televised because Rovers were collecting the Premier Division trophy that night. He stopped short of stating it was the sole reason for the national broadcaster's presence in Dublin 24. Nonetheless, it added to the sense that a scene was being set, and in that scene the men in red were mere extras. Despite the casting of Pat's in the 'Chelsea' role, this wasn't necessarily apparent to the untrained eye following the first few minutes of the live television transmission. Accidental viewers could have been forgiven for thinking they had tuned in to a presentation of silverware and nothing else. They may have been surprised to see a game of football break out. But break out it did. And not just any game, either – a Dublin derby that presented Shamrock Rovers with the opportunity to beat one of just two teams they had so far failed to defeat this season. But the men in red weren't without motivation of their own. It seemed unlikely, but in no way beyond the realms of possibility, that they could inflict a first league defeat on Shamrock Rovers this season. The champions' party night offered subplots aplenty. As it transpired, Pat's played much the better football on the night and could consider

themselves unfortunate not to win. Co-commentator Kenny Cunningham heaped lavish praise on the visiting team's performance, going into considerable detail to describe the "swagger" in the side's play. The former Ireland captain also espoused his belief that the performance will have given Stephen O'Donnell no shortage of cause for optimism. A draw doesn't quite equate to fully-fledged party-pooping, but it wasn't far off. Truth be told, Covid is the only party pooper. It was a relief to see the League of Ireland season resuming when it did. For a while there, the signs were not encouraging. It looked as though the season was set to join a long list of cancellations in 2020. Somehow, the show was put back on the road, albeit in a majorly condensed way. And that's perhaps why it feels as though this has been a campaign that never really got going. By the time it all wraps up tonight, Pat's may have finished as high as fourth or as low as eighth. In a 20-team league,
which is a more familiar concept to many on this island, that could be interpreted as the difference between finishing eight or 16th. A fourth-place finish, as big an ask as it may seem, might just be enough to secure a place in next season's Europa League, but that will depend on how the FAI Cup pans out. It's a tricky game to finish with, the visit of second-placed Bohemians. The last time the sides met, at Dalymount Park on August 22, Bohs won 2-0 and barely broke sweat. There is a sense that Pat's have turned a corner since then, and today will put that theory to the test. This fixture, coming as it does on the last day of the season, evokes vivid memories of the final game at Richmond Park last season, when a scoreless draw prompted a remarkable outpouring of joy from the visiting fans. It was a celebration befitting of a title triumph. In reality, they had secured a third-place finish. Tonight, Bohemians go into the game assured of second place, so the upward trajectory at the club is

undeniable. To go one better next season is unlikely to be straightforward, but that is the objective likely to occupy their minds. Thoughts of such a lofty finish will be in the thoughts and dreams of Pat's fans too, regardless if such thoughts and dreams are grounded in reality. It's difficult not to look forward to 2021 already, and not just in terms of football, but every aspect of life. However, as these pages are dedicated to football, we'll stay on the theme of the beautiful game. When next season finally arrives, the main focus for many won't even be the onpitch happenings. Fans have missed being able to attend live football matches. Likewise, live football matches have missed fans. Games have suffered. The entire sport has suffered. Please be different, 2021. As for you, 2020, you are way beyond redeeming yourself. But you can at least try to bow out in a humane way. The result tonight will indicate your willingness to ease the suffering, even just a little bit. Ronan O'Flaherty

League of Ireland Premier Division St Mel’s Park, Athlone.
ATHLONE TOWN 2 ST PATRICK'S ATH 3
ST. PATRICK'S ATHLETIC packed all their troubles in their old kit bags and smiled all the way to Inchicore last night. Managerless and reduced to ten men with the. dismissal of defender lames Coll in the 18th minute, the faints fashioned a smashing winner six minutes from time to wrap up a fivegoal thriller against Athlone Town at SL Mel's Park yesterday. Fran Hitchcock and Paddy Dillon, whose speed of mind and body had caused the Athlone defence nightmares throughout, combined to set up the clinching score. Hitchcock collected thc ball just inside thc Athlone defence and headed goalward, lust as it seemed he had run into a cul-de-sac he flicked the ball to his left to the supporting Dillon. CLOSE RANGE Dillon cut inside and drew 'keeper Josh Moran before, unselfishly, he slotted the ball square for Hitchcock to ram into the net from close range. It was no more than St. Pat's deserved in a pulsating game of fluctuating fortunes. Despite losing Coll so early, St. Pat's struck with two superb counter-attacks to take a 2-0 lead after 10 minutes. Athlone unable to make their numerical advantage count, pulled a goal back from Synan Braddish two
12
minutes before half time. MORE POTENT The midlanders were far more potent and constructive after the break and Padraig Dully confirmed their rehabilitation when he rounded off a delightful move for the equaliser in the 66th minute. It seemed then that Athlone were poised to pounce for victory but battling St. Pat's kept their heads and were rewarded with Hitchcock’s thriller. Hitchcock and Dillon were thc stars on a chilly, blustery afternoon. The former roved from one wing to the other, teasing and tormenting while Dillon's aerial ability and close control made him an ideal target man. SOLID SUPPORT St. Pat's defence was marshalled with customary effect by Padraig O'Connor and he received solid support from Eamonn Gregg and John Cleary who moved back after Coll's dismissal. Martin Morrison was perpetual motion in midficld while Mark Meagan showed flashes of class. For Athlone, Alan Lyons was as wholehearted as ever in defence, while Martin Duffy's forays from fullback caused St. Pat's several anxious moments. Synan Braddish and Mark Devlin foraged away industriously in midfield but their attack only operated fitfully, most noticeably for 20 minutes or so in the second half. RED CARD Thc game exploded into life in the 18th minute. Coll

and Dully tangled going for a Braddish free as they lay entwined on the ground. Coll stuck out a boot and blatantly caught Dully on the side of the head. Referee Spillane had no hesitation in brandishing the red card. Undeterred, St. Pat's lifted their game. In the 28th minute, Gregg chased into space on the right. He squared the ball to Meagan whose first-time cross found Dillon's chest. The former Drogheda player controlled the ball, turned, and shot low into the net from an acute angle. Twelve minutes later, Jim
Athlone received a psychological boost when Braddish got a touch to Brian Duffs shot in the 43rd minute to force the ball over the line and their sustained pressure in the second half was rewarded when Des Quinlan shrugged off Austin Brady's challenge and flighted a neat pass into the path of Dully who gave the belatedly advancing Grace no chance.

Opposition Watch James Fenton @fentonjames16
HOW HAS 2020 GONE?
ONE TO WATCH
All things considered, Keith Long will be very satisfied with Bohs' progress this season. Already guaranteed a second place finish, the Gypsies can look forward to another crack at Europe next season and they still have an FAI Cup quarter-final against Dundalk to come.
Forward Andre Wright has impressed throughout the season, hitting seven goals in the league ahead of tonight's final game. Since arriving at Dalymount Park in July 2019, the 23-year-old Englishman has played an important role as the club improved on last season's third place finish.
In their most recent league game, Bohs succumbed to a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Finn Harps, a result which saw Shamrock Rovers confirmed as champions. Before that, tonight's opponents had been on a four-match winning run. IN THE DUGOUT Keith Long took over at Dalymount Park in October 2014 and has overseen steady progression ever since. This year's second place finish will be seen as just reward for all of his hard work and success in the FAI Cup this month would be the icing on the cake. In his programme notes from the meeting between the two clubs at Dalymount Park in August, Long praised the work of our team, writing: 'St. Pat’s have quality within their squad with a good mix of experience and talented young players. Previously, Long has managed Bray Wanderers and Athlone Town.

Bohemians OUR RECENT RECORD AGAINST THE VISITORS

We have a long history against our rivals from the other side of the Phoenix Park and it's fair to say we're due a win over them. A 2-0 defeat at Dalymount Park in August made it eight games without a win for Saints against the Gypsies, with our most victory being a 1-0 away win in March 2018.
LEAGUE OF IRELAND: 11
As for Richmond Park, we've been waiting since a 3-0 win in March 2016 for a win over our rivals here. Mark Timlin, Christy Fagan and Billy Dennehy got the goals that day and if we needed any more motivation to get the win tonight, our recent record against Bohs should provide it!

Lee Desmond was awarded the man of the match and he was superb but I think in all honesty Alan Mannus was the man of the match because he kept Rovers in it with some outstanding saves on the night. The 2000’s Dermot Looney @dlooney
Barren but eventful start to 21st century Pat’s began the millennium inauspiciously, finishing in fifth place in 2000-01, with Pat Dolan restored to the manager’s hotseat. The League Cup was won for the first time, with the Saints beating UCD 5-3 in a two-legged tie. But controversy was not far off. The 2001-02 season was dogged by off-field issues. First, Pat’s were deducted nine points due to paperwork issues with the registration of Paul Marney. These points were restored after arbitration, but complaints from Shelbourne saw Pat’s then deducted 15 points for paperwork issues with Charles Mbabazi Livingstone. A trawl through registrations at other League clubs reportedly turned up hundreds of issues, but this report was quietly buried. The League awarded the championship to Shelbourne, who had finished five points behind on the field of play. Pat’s players and fans alike celebrated the League win and the club continue to count the title in the roll of honour. There was also controversy with a mooted merger between St Pat’s and First Division St Francis. Names like “St Pat’s – St Francis” and the “Dublin Saints” split opinion among fans but the merger was never fully realised. 2002-03 was the last ever season of winter football with Pat’s finishing a disappointing seventh place and the resignation of Pat Dolan. The season had, however, seen history made with Patrick’s first win in Europe – an away goals win against Rijeka of Croatia in the First Round of the Intertoto Cup, with the Saints going out on away goals to Gent of Belgium in Round Two. Dolan was replaced by his assistant, Eamonn Collins, who guided the club to a second League Cup win in 2003 as well as an FAI Cup Final appearance, a disappointing 2-0 loss to Longford Town. Collins resigned during the 2004 season with Pat’s bottom of the table, and was replaced by club legend John McDonnell, who helped the team to safety and an eighth place finish.
2005 saw a poor tenth place finish. A mooted move out of Richmond Park to groundshare with Shamrock Rovers at the still-under-construction Tallaght Stadium rumbled on between 2005 and 2007, with fans organising a campaign called “Pat’s for Richmond” to save the club’s place in Inchicore. 2006 was marginally better in the League with a seventh place finish, but will perhaps be remembered best – or worst – for the FAI Cup Final, the last ever football match played at the old Lansdowne Road. A thrilling encounter played in strong winds saw Patrick’s take the lead three times only to be hauled back each time by Derry City, who ran out 4-3 winners after extra time. 2007 saw the arrival of Garrett Kelleher as chairman with significant monetary investment in the club, with a commitment to staying at Richmond Park. The season saw Pat’s return to form, albeit it falling short to Drogheda United and finishing as runnersup. 2008 saw similar, with another second-place finish behind Bohemians. The Saints were bolstered during this time by the return of gifted midfielder Keith Fahey and forward Mark Quigley, who was the League’s joint top goalscorer in 2008. That season also saw the Saints best run in Europe to date, defeating Olimps of Riga and Elfsborg of Sweden in the UEFA Cup qualifying rounds before losing out to Bundesliga giants Hertha Berlin in the first round proper. 2009 saw a disappointing season under the management of Jeff Kenna, who stepped down in September with the club staring a first ever relegation in the face. His replacement, Pete Mahon, guided the club to safety. Kenna’s reign did, however, see another great European run in the rebranded Europa League, with victory over Valetta of Malta and a huge upset over Krylya Sovetov of Russia setting up a play-off with Steaua Bucharest of Romania which finished in defeat.

I believe we will emerge from this dark period with a fresh perspective about our club and what we want it to stand for. With the right strategy, and with greater communication with supporters and local stakeholders, the club can undoubtedly appeal to a wider audience and increase its standing in an area undergoing significant change. While the season is drawing to a close, our work in the community will continue right up to Christmas. We are currently working on several projects and hope to be able to return to schools in the near future. Additionally, we are in dialogue with a variety of local services exploring how we can best support local families who will find themselves economically vulnerable this Christmas. Despite the current restrictions, the power of football and the influence of our badge in the local area will ensure that we continue to have the ability to make a difference, even in the most challenging of times.

EUROZONE Sean Brennan
APOEL Nicosia Following Mick McCarthy’s switch to the Cypriot club, we take a look at his new employers. First in a regular series on European football. As the crow flies, there are 3,387km between Barnsley and Nicosia. To help visualise that distance, a south-easterly journey of the same distance from Nicosia would leave you in Karachi, Pakistan. Average July temperatures differ from 15 degrees in Barnsley, to 37 degrees in Nicosia. The post-industrial struggles of South Yorkshire are further in stark contrast to the financial services enriched Cypriot capital. The only connection which comes to mind is a fondness for grilled lamb, the Barnsley Chop and Souvlaki. That was, until the news came of Barnsley native Mick McCarthy’s new position as manager of Cypriot giants APOEL Nicosia. In what has been considered as an unlikely move, the manager who was a penalty shootout away from glory in the 2002 World Cup has left his zone of familiarity on the periphery of the Premier League to the very south eastern corner of Europe. APOEL Nicosia are Cyprus’ largest club, with 28 league titles to their name. They play at the 22,000seater GSP Stadium, which they share with local rivals Omonia and Olympiakos (the lesser known, Nicosia version). With an average attendance of just under 5,000, the ground, however, tends to get filled for the derby with Omonia and for big European nights. Their budget is more in line with
26
the mid-table of the English Championship. APOEL’s record expenditure on a transfer is £1.8m, with a record sale of £4.05m, both involving Hungarian winger Rolland Sallai, with the club acting as a stepping stone to the Bundesliga for him. With 18 different nationalities in Apoel’s playing squad, McCarthy will be the latest addition to a multicultural environment at the eastern Mediterranean club. APOEL were set up in 1926 with APOEL standing for “Athlitikos Podosferikos Omilos Ellinon Lefkosias” or “Football Club of Greeks in Nicosia”. Following ups and downs in the 20th century, they have seen more stability and success this century, with 12 of their 28 league titles coming in the last 20 years. Like many continental clubs, they operate on a multi-sport basis, with teams in basketball, volleyball and other sports operating under the APOEL umbrella. APOEL’s main rivals domestically are their city neighbours Omonia. Originally clubmates, a bitter schism occurred at APOEL in 1948, with a breakaway group forming to become eternal rivals Omonia Nicosia, due to an ideological dispute over the Greek Civil War. At the time of writing APOEL are in need of a fresh approach from McCarthy. For the biggest club in the country, they are underperforming and are

languishing in 10th place in the 14 team division. After 8 games, already 11 points separate them from joint table toppers Apollon Limassol and Anorthosis Famagusta, the latter managed by former Newcastle and Georgia star Temuri Ketsbaia. Readers of a certain vintage will remember him from that goal celebration. In terms of difficulty, the Cypriot league is far from a stroll on a Mediterranean beach. UEFA ranks them as 15th in the European coefficient, directly ahead of Serbia, Greece and Switzerland (and much further ahead of Ireland). Irish clubs have been making the long journey to Cyprus a bit in recent years; Both Cork in 2017 and Dundalk in 2018 bit the dust at AEK Larnaca, while Shamrock Rovers were knocked out of Europe by Apollon Limassol in 2019.
Whelan can offer some expert guidance, he himself having worked in both Greece and Cyprus. APOEL’s fans and board will be expecting a quick turnaround of fortunes for the island’s biggest club, and McCarthy will need to deliver. Despite the high expectations, I believe McCarthy has made a wise move here. A break from the English weather and media, along with the prospect of regular European football and a healthy, olive-oil
APOEL are already out of European competition for this season, having lost 0-1 to Slovan Liberec. Their name is most familiar to European football fans following their shock appearance in the Champions League quarter finals in 2012. After topping a group of Zenit, Shakhtar and Porto, they defeated Lyon in the last 16 before Benzema, Kaká and Ronaldo were amongst the scorers as Real Madrid advanced to the semis. Irish fans will likely recall Cillian Sheridan’s stint at the club in 2013-2015. The well travelled striker actually spent a total 4 years in Nicosia, spending a much more prolific 2 years with arch-rivals Omonia following a move from APOEL. In interviews he looks back fondly on his time there, both in terms of football and lifestyle, with the added bonus of playing Champions League football. Mick McCarthy will no doubt have an exciting time integrating into Cypriot football and society. A brief playing spell at Lyon will hopefully have helped him with issues of cultural unfamiliarity. He will be adding his name to a very short list of Irish managers who have worked outside of Ireland and the UK. This exclusive club includes our own Brian Kerr and Johnny McDonnell, as well as Patrick O’Connell, architect of Real Betis’ only La Liga triumph to date. Even fellow TV pundit Ronnie

rich diet should keep the former Ireland boss feeling youthful and motivated. The blind optimist in me feels we may cross paths in the coming years for a UEFA Cup qualifier, with McCarthy inviting the Pats away fans to a platter of halloumi washed down with plenty of ouzo. Certainly more likely than drawing Barnsley anyway.

Final days of delirium Stephen Bennett
@stebenn15
The final day of the League of Ireland Premier Division season will always hold special memories in the hearts of St Pat's supporters. The mind often casts back to those halcyon days in the late 1990s when a league title was up for grabs and Pats had a chance to win it. For most, this abiding memory will be Kilkenny in May 1998. Obviously, winning the League title in 1990 in Drogheda brings memories all a different kind. But nothing could compete with 1998 as a convoy of Saints descended on the midlands city in hope rather than expectation. Shelbourne - the club's fiercest rivals at the time had the onerous task of travelling to that final day title graveyard known as Oriel Park. It was this prospect that filled Pats fans with optimism. As Bohemians supporters will testify, Dundalk was the last place you would want to be heading in an attempt to get the title over the line on the last day of the season. In 1993, Bohs, then managed by former Saints player Eamonn Gregg, made the short trip northwards seeking only a single point to claim the championship. The curse of Oriel had struck even before Bohs had arrived at the ground when their coach broke down en route. As Gypsies midfielder Tony O'Connor - a league winner with St Pat's in 1990 - explained: "It was in our own hands. We headed up to Dundalk on the last day of the season. We just needed a draw. Of course, on the way up, the coach breaks down. We were two hours standing on the side of the road waiting for a second coach to get us. "We got up there at 2.50pm and we had 15 minutes to get ready. It was madness. We lost 1-0 on the day
32
and unfortunately, it threw open a three-way playoff between ourselves, Shels and Cork. Eventually Cork won it. It was a real sickener. To me we were the best team in the league." So, going to Dundalk on the final day was never going to be an easy task for Shels. The fact that Dundalk's previous five games going into the match against Shels read LDLLL might have given the Reds some hope. But it mattered little to the Lilywhites. There was a scalp to be taken, and so it proved. Pats, of course, needed to look after their own business in Kilkenny and were struggling mightily until Eddie Gormley emerged as the hero. The title going down to the wire presented the League with a problem. Where would the trophy go? Shels being favourites to lift the title, gave them the upper hand in the League's thought process, so pregame the trophy was sent up north, while an unwanted bit of silverware from the FAI's trophy cabinet was dusted down and set to Buckley Park, you know, just in case. It was another little sidebar to the epic drama that unfolded The fact that, crowdwise, Buckley Park represented a home game for St Pat's, ensured nerves were settled early on when Colin Hawkins fired Pat Dolan's side in front after five minutes. Pats never built on that lead and were punished in the 38th minute when Trevor Vaughan smacked home an equaliser for Kilkenny. Pats' nerves were frayed even more in the second half as a young Michael Reddy - who was on his way to Sunderland that summer - caused all sorts of havoc in the Saints defence and only for the brilliant intervention of Trevor Wood in the 57th minute, Reddy would have put the home side in front.

With RTE covering the action live from Oriel Park, news had filtered through that Dundalk were doing the business of party-pooping up in Oriel very well indeed. But it still needed a goal from St Pat's to bring a third league title in eight years back to Inchicore. As the Irish Independent reported the next day: "No soothsayer could have predicted the mental turmoil Pats supporters went through at Buckley Park in Kilkenny last night before Eddie Gormley finally decided the title race 11 minutes from time. Like Dundalk, Kilkenny showed that they were not prepared to be bit players and made sure that the new champions were tested fully." The final line on the Irish Times report put is succinctly: "It was the signal for a night of fireworks and songs from the massed St Patrick's supporters. Loyal supporters rewarded by a determined team." Photos on the back pages of the next morning's newspapers showed Eddie lifting a trophy with the inscription 'League of Wales v League of Ireland.' Never change, those in officialdom, never change! The following season brought yet more final day tension, but nothing at the levels of Buckley Park a year previously. Pats needed a home win against Bray Wanderers to clinch back-to-back titles, and this they did courtesy of a Jeff Clarke finish - the only goal the Canadian international scored in the colours of St Pat's. In these Covid-inflicted times we live in, it is perhaps a little saddening to see the league ending with a whimper in front of no fans, with only memories of those times to look back on. Some will be glad the whole show is over as we look forward to the possibility of a full season next year with the possibility of crowds returning to stadia. But for now, stay safe, winter well, and hope that we'll see those days of delirium once again.

Celebrity Supporters Sean Creedon
You don’t have to be a fanatical supporter of English soccer to know that most clubs have what are described as ‘celebrity fans.’ Most readers will know that the Gallagher brothers, Noel and Liam are big Manchester City fans. Not surprisingly Liverpool had many celeb fans before they eventually won the Premiership; Cilla Black, Ken Dodd and Ricky Tomlinson, all Liverpudlians, claimed allegiance. Meanwhile Everton’s celebrity list includes Paul McCartney, Judy Dench, Shane McGowan and Sylvester Stallone. The late Eric Morecambe was a Luton Town fan and eventually became a director of The Hatters. Likewise cookery expert Delia Smith was a Norwich fan before becoming a director of the Canaries as did Elton John with Watford. In Scotland Rod Stewart is a big Celtic fan. Northern Ireland-born television presenter Eamon Holmes admits to being a huge Manchester United fan and former Rugby star Tony Ward is lifetime Leeds United supporter, having lived in the city when he was a young boy. In London Piers Morgan is an Arsenal fan and Prince Harry is also supposed to be a fan of The Gunners. But I don’t think we have ever seen pictures of Megan Markle at the Emirates, and probably won’t, now that the couple have moved to the US. The celeb cult probably started in England in the sixties when Chelsea attracted some high profile stars like Raquel Welch and Steve McQueen to The Bridge. The Blues also had a big fan in Richard Attenborough, who later became a director. Looking at some of the names that support English clubs led me to thinking how many celebrity fans do League of Ireland clubs have? Our soccer-made President Michael D Higgins attended a League of Ireland game every Friday night before the Lockdown, but really he is a Galway United fan.
34
Here at Inchicore we have a few, including Newstalk presenter and ‘Something Happens’ band member Tom Dunne. Brian Kerr is a regular at Richer, but Brian would probably be too modest to regard himself as a celebrity; he is more, he is a treasure. Across town I remember Don Hall being a regular at Dalymount Park. Mature readers will remember Don as the man who compiled the satirical RTE television programme ‘Hall’s Pictorial Weekly’ many years ago. Nowadays Eurovision winner Johnny Logan and radio presenter P.J. Gallagher are among the Gypsies celeb fans. And I remember seeing comedian and Father Ted star Ardal O’Hanlon attending a few Bohs’ games in the past. Speaking of Fr. Ted, the man himself Dermot Morgan, was a regular at Belfield, before his untimely death. Back in the fifties and sixties there were lots of celebrities at Dalymount Park, at least once a year, for a charity game between representatives of the media and the theatre, better known as the ‘Inkblots’ versus the ‘Crackpots.’ Attendances average around 20,000 and gate

In Cork Joe O’Herlihy, sound man for U2, used to be regular at Turner’s Cross and my namesake John Creedon is also part of the Rebel Army. In the first division Cabinteely can claim two famous media people in Con Murphy and the former Evening Press reporter John O’Shea. Up in Drogheda PRO Gerard Grimes tells me that Arthur Mathews, co-writer of Father Ted, is a fan of the Drogs. receipts were donated to various charities. Participants included RTE commentators Philip Greene and Fred Cogley, jockey Aubrey Brabazon, Bohemians dual star Kevin O’Flanagan and actors like: Noel Purcell, Joe Lynch, Noel Purcell, Mickser Reid, Maureen Potter, Jack Cruise and Cecil Sheridan. Legendary Irish Times editor Robert Smyllie and author Brian O’Nolan, alias Myles na gCopaleen, also turned out. Down the road in Tolka Park Shelbourne has a young fan in RTE Newsreader Ray Kennedy and I’m told that former T.D. Finian McGrath is also a regular in Richmond Road. Shamrock Rovers is the club where you see most former players, Pat Byrne, Mick Byrne and Robbie Gaffney are all regulars in Tallaght Stadium. When she is not working on the RTE News Samantha Libreri can be seen working in Tallaght Stadium. I think Samantha probably regards herself as a volunteer rather than a celebrity. My friend Peter Costello told me that the O’Neill brothers John and Damien and Mickey Brady of The Understones were big fans of Derry City. In the old days you could purchase vinyl singles in ‘picture

Nicky Byrne of Westlife, who played for the Cobh Ramblers, is still a member, but PRO James O’Donoghue says that another former player, Roy Keane, is definitely their celebrity fan. Sonia O’Sullivan, whose father John was very involved with the club, used to visit St Colman’s Park when she lived in Ireland, but she now spend most of her time in Australia. Out in Bray I used to see Des Cahill often supporting the Wanderers at the Carlisle Grounds. So when the crowds are allowed back to grounds around the country and you are at a League of Ireland game, take a look around you in the stand or terraces and you might spot a ‘celebrity.’

As this is the last time in 2020 I will have the chance to share some thoughts with readers of The Saint, I decided some weeks ago that my last piece would centre around a look back at the season and share my thoughts on some of the highlights. Now, I appreciate that talking about “looking back at highlights” and “2020” do not necessarily sit comfortably together for many – in fact it put me in mind of a favourite quote of mine, from Episode 2 in James Joyce's Ulysses where Stephen Dedalus, James Joyce's literary alter ego, delivers the following observation: "History is a nightmare from which I am trying to awake". However, for the last programme of the season I thought it was worth taking an upbeat and reflective view of the SSE Airtricity League, because despite everything, there has been much to enjoy, even in such a disrupted and truncated season with a big gap in the middle. So, in no particular order, here are some of my favourite LOI personalities and moments to remember in 2020.
Jordan Flores The Dundalk midfielder’s goal against Shamrock Rovers in February was beamed worldwide in the hours that followed, and it could yet take home this year’s FIFA Puskas award for goal of the year. The goal came in the 22nd minute of Dundalk’s 3-2 defeat at Tallaght, when Flores

struck an unstoppable volley from a corner kick and pictures of the goal were circulated around the football world, courtesy of the RTE cameras that captured the moment from numerous different angles. A classic.
Jack Byrne It’s always good to have LOI representatives in the national squad, and I’m sure every follower of this league would agree that Jack Byrne is worthy of his place at international level. He has been outstanding for Shamrock Rovers this season, and among many highlights, his pass to pick out Graham Burke to set up a Rovers goal against Sligo recently was different class.
Dundalk’s Europa League Campaign I know there are those who can’t bring themselves to support a rival club, but as a fan of the league, I was delighted when Dundalk beat Faroese side KI to qualify for the Europa League group stages. Having our league represented in Europe is important for the profile and co-efficient, and having games against Molde, Rapid Vienna and of course Arsenal to look forward to, on cold dark nights when we all need a lift, is brilliant. 2020 Season • Vol. 32 • No. 8 • St Patrick’s Athletic v Bohemians

Conan Byrne A former hero and favourite of this parish who deserves the highest praise for his initiative to reach out to the elderly, vulnerable or self-isolating LOI followers who are struggling with lockdown by arranging for LOI personalities past and present to give them a call. It’s an example of how the best ideas can often be simple ones, and some of the stories and reaction to current and former players contacting fans that have emerged has been truly heart-warming. Well done Conan.
John Caulfield Regular readers of this column down the years will know I am a fan of the former Cork City boss, and I was delighted to see him return to the league as manager of Galway United. He didn’t half make a difference too, taking over a team struggling at the bottom of the league and steering them to a play off final place. I reckon long suffering Galway United fans could be in for an enjoyable 2021 as long Mr C remains in charge.
a great watch with all the games available to view on live streaming, and twists and turns along the way. And then on play off semi final day, Galway United beat Bray Wanderers after thinking their season was over four days earlier, and Longford Town scored a winner in extra time stoppage time to beat UCD. Great stuff.
Watch LOI Well, what can I say? After years of having to keep in touch with the league by snippets on Twitter, or making the best of any coverage that wasn’t restricted to Ireland only, having every game available on tap, either live or on catch up, has been like Christmas come early for me. Several weeks in, I still couldn’t quite believe it was
The First Division And what a competition that has been this season. To go into the final round of games with seven out of ten teams having something to play for, either automatic promotion or the play offs, just shows how competitive the league has been. The final night made for

available. Yes, there’s been the odd technical hitch, and maybe one or two of the commentators used could do with a bit more practice, but those are minor points that can be overcome, and are in a minority among many positives. All I can hope is that the service continues for many years to come, especially for those of us out with Ireland who want their LOI fix every week. I would suffer severe withdrawal symptoms if it was taken away from me now. And looking a bit closer to home...
Billy King His cracking second-half winner to earn Saints a 1-0 win over Cork City at Richmond Park was a fine way to celebrate his recently awarded player-of-the-month award, and it was also our first goal and first win of the season on home soil. Little did we know then that it would also be the last goal we could all celebrate together, gathered without restriction on the banks of the Camac.
Chris Forrester As the match report on the club website says, Chris “rolled back the years with a stunning long-range strike to help St Patrick's Athletic to a comfortable 2-0 victory over city rivals Shelbourne”. One of the season’s highlights.

added one of Jack Charlton accompanied by his mantra "Put ‘Em Under Pressure". A welcome and colourful addition to the league landscape.
Receiving national recognition for commitment to supporting the local community at a time of need is fantastic, and epitomises everything that is good about the club. The judges commented that it was an excellent example of a social engagement, and praised the volunteers who worked on the initiative. Well done to everyone involved.
The Saint
Richmond Park Murals Another great community initiative was the club’s link up with the KRIB Youth Diversion Project, who with support from Foroige and Write Type Graffiti came together to design and deliver a fabulous new mural inside the ground. As it turned out, not as many people have seen it as we would have imagined when it was first unveiled but it’s a great addition to the ground, and adds to the collection we have already, with the big doors on Emmet Road displaying the club crest and the murals on the walls as you approach the turnstiles. On the subject of murals, with Bohs being the visitors tonight it would be remiss not to mention the murals on view at Dalymount Park now. Bob Marley and Phil Lynnot murals are visible when games are on television, and as well as a distinctive anti-racism design on the back of the main stand, they recently

And then there is this very publication. Directed superbly by our leader Ruairi, with top drawer design work from Joe, my fellow contributors and me are given the perfect canvas on which to paint our written pictures of the club, the league and any other topic that might prompt us to sit down at the keyboard. It’s hard to be unbiased about something you are involved in, but all I can say is that it is a pleasure and privilege to be a part of it, and if anyone reading The Saint gets half as much enjoyment from reading it as I do writing for it, that will do me. For now, it’s time to sign off for 2020, but let’s look forward with optimism to 2021 and better times ahead. Life might be stormy now, but storms don’t last forever, and keeping me going through the next few months will be a thought of experiencing once again a sunny summer evening in Richmond Park, watching the Saints and seeing some familiar faces. Until the next time, stay safe, enjoy Christmas in whatever form it may take for you, and we can all look forward to meeting up again in the New Year. Ian Templeman

ST PATRICK'S ATH 2 BOHEMIANS 0 BELEAGUERED St Patrick's Athletic may still be reeling from, the deduction, of 15 points, by the Eircom League last Friday, but, they showed last night that they are in no mood to surrender. With club president Tim O’Flaherty promising that, they will fight the latest points deduction to hit the Saints this.season, his players gave an emphatic answer on the pitch. They ended Bohs’ nine game unbeaten league ran with a powerful performance, crowned, by two goals in a minute from Darragh Maguire and the man at the centre of the controversy, Charles Mbabazi Livingstone. the Pat's keeper brilliantly tipped over a left footed sizzler from Paul Byrne. If St Pat's beat Dundalk on Thursday night, they will have got themselves into a position where they will be crowned league champions if they manage to get those 15 points back.

partisan, mood with regular standing ovations during the game as Inchicore stood firmly behind its football dub. No matter what happens in the committee rooms of Merrion Square, the chambers of 'the Four Courts or the hallowed offices of FIFA, St Pat's are determined to finish this season with the most gross points and leave nobody in any doubt as to who the best team this season is. Last, night's win put them one point ahead of Shelbourne on the gross pointstable and into third place on the nett standings and into the InterToto- Cup spot. Right from the start the big crowd ensured a highly charged atmosphere and it took excellent saves from
Seamus Kelly to prevent Glen Crowe and Dave Morrison getting Bohs off to a perfect start before St Pat’s exerted five minutes of intense pressure which yielded two goals. The first came after 15 minute when Paul Osam crossed from the left and Darragh Maguire's outstretched leg guided the ball past Michael Dempsey and into the net.

Straight from their next attack, Pat's forced a corner and when Bohs failed to clear Martin Russell's inswinger, Livingstone forced the ball over the line for his 14th goal of the season. Bohs, who bad come from two down on Friday night last in Bray set about the chase in determined fashion, but were again thwarted by Kelly when

Return to Glory Even from this immediate standpoint, it is clear that one man is central in the history of Pat’s in the current decade; Liam Buckley. The former Irish international, who had a successful playing spell at Pat’s to finish his career, had already managed the Saints to the League title in 1998-99 before managing at Shamrock Rovers and the short-lived Sporting Fingal experiment. ‘Bucko’ returned to Pat’s after Pete Mahon, who had himself guided the Saints to safety in 2009, departed in the winter of 2011. That season had seen victory in the Europa League qualifiers over IBV Vestmannaeyjar of Iceland and Shakter Karagandy of Kazakhstan, but the European run came to an end in auspicious circumstances with a 5-1 aggregate defeat to Karpaty Lviv of Ukraine marred further by a dispute about player’s bonuses. Mahon’s final season had seen the Saints win the Leinster Senior Cup. Buckley’s first season, 2012, saw a third-place League finish along with another agonising FAI Cup Final defeat, this time at the new Aviva Stadium, at the hands of Derry City on a 3-2 (AET) scoreline. There was another good European run too, with victory over IBV (again) and Siroki Brijeg of Bosnia, before eventual defeat to Bundesliga giants Hannover 96. Pat’s fans were buoyed by Buckley’s brand of attacking football, a 4-3-3 (or 4-1-2-2-1) formation employing passing football from the back, a midfield three who pressed and a skilful front three. Buckley’s early signings were key to this system, amongst them defenders Kenny Browne and Ger O’Brien, centre midfielders Greg Bolger, John Russell and Killian Brennan, and attackers Conan Byrne, Christy Fagan and Chris Forrester. 2013 saw the League title return to Inchicore. Pat’s locked horns with Sligo Rovers and Dundalk during
the season. The run-in saw the Saints beat Dundalk at home in September, with the title sealed in October with a famous 2-0 win against Sligo, again at Richmond. 2014 saw Pat’s again compete well in the League, eventually finishing third behind Dundalk, whose dominant run would continue throughout the rest of the decade. Keith Fahey returned to the club for the third time, while Christy Fagan finished the season as the League’s top scorer with 20 goals. Pat’s won the inaugural President’s Cup as well as the Leinster Senior Cup. But the season will be remembered for one game in particular, on Sunday November 2nd, when the 53-year FAI Cup hoodoo was broken with a 2-0 victory over Derry City in the Aviva Stadium with a brace of goals from Christy Fagan. League Cup success followed in 2015 and 2016 but by then much of the core of the League and FAI Cup winning teams had moved on. 2016 saw advancement in the Europa League over Jeunesse Esch of Luxembourg, followed by a narrow defeat to Dinamo Minsk of Belarus. 2017 was a difficult year with relegation narrowly avoided with a late rally. The Buckley era came to an end towards the end of the 2018 season, another disappointing one which nonetheless saw Pat’s qualify for Europe following a fifth place finish and the subsequent ineligibility of Waterford United. Despite high hopes, the Harry Kenny era didnt fare well for the Saints. He was replaced in Autumn 2019 by Stephen O'Donnell, his first managerial appointment, a highly decorated player most recently winning several titles with Dundalk FC. As head coach, O'Donnell is partnered by experienced manager Alan Mathews to help chart the difficult road back to success for the Saints.
