President’s Welcome Tom O’Mahony
Good Evening You are very welcome to Richmond Park for tonight's match against Dundalk FC. Tonight takes us to the end of the first series of games which will give an opportunity to take stock of how things are shaping up at both ends of the table. There is a rule of thumb in football across most leagues that if you want to be in title contention you have to be averaging slightly over two points a game. It's very interesting that the only team still with a chance of being in that position at the end of the first series is Derry City and that in itself tells us something about consistency on their part which none of the other teams have been able to find. Shamrock Rovers, Sligo Rovers and ourselves have had some excellent performances and results but haven't delivered those on a week-to-week basis. Not only have Derry been a model of consistency, but it's also striking that three of their first five wins have come by way of injury time winners. Which reminds me of another rule of thumb in football - the most successful teams tend to have that capability of pulling points out of the fire at the death. So there's absolutely no doubt that Derry City have been the dominant team of the first series. However, medals get handed out in November, not April. Derry have thrown down the gauntlet to the chasing pack but there's a very long way to go. The question for Pats fans. of course, is whether we can maintain a title challenge as the season progresses. Our consistency to date has been the polar
opposite of Derry's. There have been some excellent performances, particularly in the trips to Tolka Park and Ballybofey and at home to Shamrock Rovers. I also felt that we matched Derry in the Brandywell and were very unlucky to be undone by one of those injury time winners. But it has to be accepted that some of the other performances and results have been disappointing. That's probably not too surprising in the context of a radically overhauled playing squad and a new management team bedding in. Through a combination of departures and injuries, our recent starting line-ups have tended to include no less than eight new arrivals to the club so it's only fair to accept that it will take some time for the new team to develop into a smooth winning machine. I know that there is a huge amount of work being done on the training ground to bring that about and I'm confident we'll see the benefit of it as the season progresses. What has not been in any doubt in the season so far has been the consistency of your support. The attendances at home games have been quite brilliant and the support of the travelling red army has been remarkable in the away ones. Thank you! Enjoy tonight's game. Welcome to Richmond Park for what promises to be a keenly-contested game between two teams with ambitions of doing well this season. At the time of writing, tickets are selling fast and Richmond Park will be packed to capacity, or very close to it, come kickoff. For those involved on match nights – namely the players, but also myself and the staff – it makes a big difference playing in front of such big crowds. Your continued support is very much appreciated and never taken for granted. Our numberone objective is to win for the supporters and this evening is no different in that regard. We were disappointed with the result against Drogheda United last week. On the night, we weren’t at our best but the team still did more than enough to win the game. Drogheda's goal, while well taken by Dayle Rooney, was the result of some individual errors. That can happen to any player in any game and we certainly don't point fingers of blame. The best remedy to falling behind is to dust ourselves off, keep cool heads and go again immediately. In fairness to the players, they did exactly that. Unfortunately, elements of our play were slightly disjointed and some moves didn't quite come off. On another night, everything
would have clicked and we would have won comfortably. If you can't win the game, at least try to make sure you don't lose. So while we were very disappointed not to win, the players showed great resilience to keep plugging away and force home an equaliser through Darragh Burns. It is still very early days in the life of this team. I have tried some different combinations and made strategic tweaks here and there. It's all about trying to find the right combination. This is liable to change from game to game as some players become available and certain opponents ask different questions of us than others. All in all, we aren't too far away. I'm delighted with the squad of players at my disposal and they go into each game believing we can win. This evening marks the final match in the first series of games. If I was to sum up the eight league games so far in a two-word description, "mixed bag" would probably suffice. In football, there is much made of teams who find the happy nack of winning games they only deserved to draw or win. We

have yet to happen upon that situation and it's something we'd like to change. Of course, the team endeavours to outplay the opponents in every game, but that's not quite how life works and the key is learning to hang in there on an off-day. I would like to welcome the management, players and everyone associated with Dundalk FC to Richmond Park. Stephen O'Donnell has a very strong squad of players to select from. No doubt, the 11 he sends out to start this evening's game will be well up for it – as will our boys. Dundalk come into the game on the back of a convincing, albeit expected, victory against UCD and we have a good idea of what to expect this evening. Both sides have made similar starts to the campaign. This is a big challenge but we are determined to sign off on the first quarter of games with a positive performance and result. With the backing of a loud, passionate and sold-out Richmond Park crowd, we have every chance. Enjoy the match, Tim Clancy

Oh My Word! Ronan O’Flaherty
This match has taken longer to arrive than it should have. When the fixture makers decided to pair St Patrick's against Dundalk at the latest possible stage, it was understandable that many reacted with mild incredulity. In a league where clubs traditionally struggle to attract big crowds on a consistent basis, it would be good business sense to start off with games that capture the public’s imagination. In other countries, where top-flight football games generally sell out, they needn't ponder such matters. In Ireland, it is important that we put more thought into the schedule. It should be treated like the most delicate of mathematical equations – arrive at the right solution and it might just make life a little bit better for clubs. Thankfully, the zeitgeist is shifting. People here are embracing their local teams in greater numbers than at any stage in the last forty years. We still have some way to go, but the wind is finally blowing in a different direction. However, the point remains: pairing St Patrick's Athletic and Dundalk in the ninth series of fixtures – i.e., the latest possible date – feels like a bad decision. A missed opportunity, even. What was the thought process? ***** Our national press boasts a wealth of outstanding sports scribes, from which those

charged with writing about Irish football are up there among the finest. Never was this more in evidence than the buildup to last season's FAI Cup final. In an era when sportspeople are often reluctant to offer little more than sanitised sound bites, the content in newspapers and websites in the days leading up to the cup final stood out like a beacon. Events in the direct aftermath of that match then prompted sports writers to pick out tonight's fixture as one to watch. It comes with subplots aplenty. As is the case with most games, nuts-and-bolts subplots concern previous meetings. The standout clash of St Patrick's and Dundalk in recent times was last season's FAI Cup semifinal here in Inchicore. During a season when games were played in empty stadia, followed by a time of limited capacities, it was good for the soul to see the place packed to the rafters. For the first time in a long time, Richmond rocked. If Darragh Burns hadn't already come of age, he put the conversation to bed that night with a mature performance way
beyond his years. Matty Smith's winning goal was the pick of the bunch, with no shortage of thanks to Burns's assist-of-theseason contender. It was appropriate that Burns would add the gloss with a delicately chipped finish to make it 3-1. The scenes at the final whistle evoked memories of the title triumph eight years earlier. There has been another, less high-profile meeting of the Saints and the Lilywhites in the meantime. It came just three days after the cup semi, with Richmond Park again the host venue. The air wasn't filled with the same electricity – how could it possibly be? – but Billy King's first-half goal secured another St Patrick's win while also tightening the team’s grip on second place. But those games aren't part of the equation tonight. They don't even form a partial element of the backdrop. This is not about past results. It's about people. Seven days ago, Robbie Benson played the entirety of Dundalk's 2-0 victory against UCD at Oriel Park. Sam Bone was an unused substitute. Both men represented St Patrick's

@ronanoflaherty before moving to Oriel Park. The same sentiments apply to John Mountney, who was not in the Dundalk match-day squad last Friday. Of the trio, Benson's time at St Patrick's will be best remembered. He wrote himself into club folklore by slotting home the winning penalty at Lansdowne Road last November. Sometimes fans ask too much of footballers. It is fair-minded to acknowledge the right of a player to move on when their contract runs out. Such sentiments especially apply in the League of Ireland, where wages are modest in comparison to other national leagues. A few quid extra could make a big difference to a household. Players must be free to move clubs when their deals expire, without fear of censure from fans. Apart from the odd exception, this is generally what happens. A few kind words by the departing player, about the club and its supporters, generally goes a long way too. ***** Last Friday's game between St Patrick's and Drogheda made for an unsatisfactory viewing experience. Perhaps ring rust played a part. Following a glut of fixtures in a short space of time, suddenly we had two weeks without a game. Drogheda picked up where they left off against Dundalk a fortnight earlier when Dayle Rooney fired them into the lead. Defensively, it was a poor goal to concede, with a variety of individual errors on display before the ball ended up in the net. Hibernian's strange decision not to part with an appropriate sum of money for the services of Darragh Burns was, in hindsight, the best thing that could have happened. We should be thankful that, for whatever reason, the Scottish club didn't recognise the true extent of the gem that had arrived at their door. Last Friday night, as St Patrick's huffed and puffed, the teenager again looked like the most likely candidate to blow the house down. And so 2022 Season • Vol. 34 • No.04 • St Patrick’s Athletic v DUNDALK
it proved. He played a key role in the lead-up before taking up a smart position at the near post to score the equaliser, all in the blink of an eye. Disappointment greeted Ben Connolly's final whistle. But maybe, if we're honest with ourselves, that was an arrogant reaction on behalf of the majority. Relief would have been more appropriate. The men in red got away with one. A similar performance tonight will not suffice. ***** More than most, this is a big night for Stephen O'Donnell. His name will have been mentioned to excess in the build-up. O'Donnell's departure from St Patrick's shortly after winning the FAI Cup has been deemed controversial. These pages are not the place to examine the ins and outs of such subject matter. He did a fine job while employed by the club and it's just a shame his time here ended so abruptly. At Oriel Park, O'Donnell's popularity knows no bounds. Only one man is more popular around those parts and he's the current Ireland manager. O'Donnell's return to Dundalk opened the door of opportunity for another young manager to assume the top job at Richmond Park. Tim Clancy successfully pulled off the loaves-and-fishes act during four years of progression at Drogheda United. He comes into tonight's match somewhat under the radar, such is the spotlight shining down on his opposite number. The most fascinating subplots play out in the technical area, but neither manager will kick a ball in anger. Worth bearing in mind if your gaze is fixed on the dugout instead of the pitch for an extended period of time.

Dundalk the pioneers of Women’s Soccer Seán Creedon On May 10, 1970 the Dundalk Women’s FC team played the Manchester Corinthian Nomad Globetrotters in a charity match in Wales. The Mancunians won 7-1 in front of a crowd of 4,000, who had paid a shilling each to watch the game. There were a few paragraphs in the Louth papers and that was it. Everybody involved moved on. But the discovery of a poster promoting the event a few years ago by Paul Gorham underlines the deeper significance of the game, three full years before the Women’s FAI was founded. It was a de facto first international match for a Republic of Ireland Women’s team. Kevin Gaynor, who was the Dundalk women’s manager, was a huge advocate for women’s soccer and his interest outside these shores meant Dundalk Ladies were one of the 44 founding members of the British Women’s FA in November 1969. A Dublin Ladies selection had hosted Scottish club Rutherglen at Glenmalure Park, Dublin in 1927, but for the following four decades organised soccer for women declined in Ireland. The game against Wales 52 years ago was played in Prestatyn Raceway, a harness racing stadium in North Wales, 40 miles from Liverpool. One reason for that venue was that the English FA had banned women playing on their grounds since 1921, officially on the grounds that it was ‘‘quite unsuitable for females,’’ but unofficially because the women had drawn alarmingly large crowds while the men were off fighting wars. Dundalk Women had only been playing two years, and they had to make do with 30 minutes a-side games before the men’s League of Ireland encounters, but they had never lost and
18
so were billed in Wales as the Irish champions. Paula Gorham, who was a month short of her 17th birthday, when she scored the Dundalk goal in that 7-1 defeat, was honoured by the FAI last year. Paula said: ‘‘If Dundalk were playing Waterford in the League of Ireland, we would play the Waterford ladies. If they were playing Limerick, we would play the Limerick ladies.’’ She was offered a professional contract by French club Stade de Reims, who would later sign Inchicore native Anne O’Brien, but turned it down at her father’s insistence. When the Women’s FAI was established in 1973, three years after Dundalk’s game against Corinthians, Gorham scored a hat-trick in the Republic of Ireland’s first officially recognised women’s international, a 3-2 win over Wales in Llanelli. It was also Wales’ first women’s international. She went on to play 11 times for Ireland, but it wasn’t until 2016 that she finally received an international cap from the FAI, and then after a campaign by her daughter Orla. Paula and John Giles were the Centenary winners in the FAI Hall of Fame last year, due recognition for their unique contribution to the history of Irish football. By the late sixties there was a huge growth in Ladies soccer in Dublin and a Civil Service Ladies Amateur League was formed. In Dublin there were many new clubs from the Civil Service and various factories. Dublin Castle beat Waterford in the 1976 final and Suffragettes beat Avengers from Dublin in the ‘77 final. Other top clubs around that time were Benfica and Rathfarnham United. In Limerick and

Shannon teams were fielded by staff from factories like: Analog Devices, Krupps and De Beers. Former League of Ireland goalkeeper Eamonn Darcy is listed as the Irish women’s team first manager from 1984 to ‘85. He was replaced in 1986 by Fran Rooney, who would later became CEO of the FAI. Next up was Linda Gorman in 1991-92, then Mick Cooke, Noel King, Sue Ronan, Colin Bell and Vera Pauw in 2019. The first Women’s Cup final was played in Limerick’s Markets Field in 1975, under
the auspices of the first Women’s Football Association of Ireland (WFAI). Limerick won, beating Dublin Civil Service team CSO 2-1. The Ladies Football Association of Ireland previously organised a women’s national league known as the Ladies League of Ireland or the Woman’s League of Ireland during the seventies and eighties. The current Women’s National league was founded in 2011 and the inaugural winners were Peamount United. Shelbourne are the current League champions after
clinching the title with a 3-2 win over Wexford Youths at Tolka Park in November. The following week-end Wexford beat Shelbourne 3-1 to win the Women’s FAI Cup final at Tallaght Stadium. Goalkeeper Emma Byrne won a record 134 Irish caps, while Olivia O’Toole still holds the Irish goal scoring record of 54 goals, which were scored between 1991 and 2009. Three other players have won 100 caps or more: Niamh Fahey, Aine O’Gorman and Ciara Grant.

A View from Afar Ian Templeman
On Saturday 26th March, I made one of my occasional trips to London for the day, to watch my English team AFC Wimbledon play Cambridge United in the EFL League One. The game itself wasn’t memorable, but it was a nice day out and as part of the match day experience, as usual I bought the match programme which is always a good read. One article that caught my eye was written by the club Kit Manager Robin “Rocket” Bedford, who was given some space in the programme to address a question that apparently many Dons have been constantly asking recently - ‘why don’t we wear our blue kit away from home more often?’ There have apparently been quite a few instances in recent months when there was no obvious colour clash between the Dons’ all blue kits with yellow trimmings and those worn by the opposition, which had prompted the issue to be raised. Bedford went on to give an interesting insight both on this issue and kits in general, and a few of the points covered are worth airing and sharing. The first point that he made was that there can be a few reasons that kit colours change and it’s not to do with ‘selling shirts’ as is often assumed. The first reason is one that I am fully aware of, through my involvement in a non-league football club over here - kit turnaround time, when games are being played twice a week. Each game doesn’t just generate dirty playing kit, there’s warm up kit, track suits, and management and coaching staff kit as well. At my club Daisy Hill, our first
22
choice kit is all blue and there are actually only two other clubs in our division that play in blue, so our red away kit would rarely be utilised unless we gave it an airing now and again. The most obvious time to do that is when we have played on Saturday in the blue kit and have a midweek game the following week. Otherwise, one of our committee men would be faced with a fair old job getting the kit taken to the local laundry firm, and picked up in readiness to be taken to the next game. In AFC Wimbledon’s case, 12-15 separate loads of washing (depending on the weather) are produced from each game and even at professional level, Bedford said that getting the kit all washed, dried and prepared ready for the next game can be a challenge, particularly between Saturday and Tuesday games, so rotating kits to spread the load can help with this. It’s also worth remembering that it’s not just the outfield player’s kit colours that need considering, because the referee and both goalkeepers should also be in distinctly different colours. So there should always be five different colour shirts visible on the pitch. The easiest way to ensure this is often by the away team wearing an away kit. However, the most interesting point that Robin Bedford raised in the article was one which I certainly hadn’t been aware of, and one which got me thinking. He said:

Ronan O’Flaherty @iantemplemanloi “Furthermore, a new FA/EFL lead initiative to improve accessibility and awareness for fans who suffer from colour blindness is going to have an increasing effect. This will impact not only match kit colour selections over the next few seasons, but also the designs themselves with specific colour combinations discouraged (e.g. red v green) and the use of distinctive design elements encouraged (such as stripes, different colour shorts or sleeves. This is a significant move away from the FIFA-led trend in recent years of all onecolour kits, and it may see some clubs move away from their traditional colours and designs”. I have to admit that the possibility of supporters being colour blind wasn’t something that had ever occurred to me before. I suppose like all medical conditions, unless you or someone you know suffers from a particular complaint or condition, you don’t necessarily spend much time thinking about what it must be like coping with it. And, if the fan experience for what is presumably a sizeable percentage of people can be improved just simply by a bit of thought going in to the style and colour of playing kits, then I’m all for it, even though I’m not
affected by colour blindness myself. The only problem I can foresee with this is illustrated by the final few words in the quote above – “it may see some clubs move away from their traditional colours and designs”. And that would be my concern. Let’s face it, when it comes to the bigger clubs, they don’t need much encouragement to launch a third kit or even a fourth one. I have mentioned before on these pages that the continental team I follow is Barcelona, and they are up there as major culprits in that department. They often use four kits in a season and seem to launch new kits with increasingly regularity. This season they have new first and second kits, a third kit in the usual club colours which they wear in European games, and have also worn a fourth kit several times that was launched last season (which I have to admit is my favourite – an all yellow kit where the jersey also carries four red stripes to symbolise the Catalonia region's Senyera flag).
going to be a trend for encouraging clubs to move away from one colour kits, the current Barcelona first choice league kit may be the first of many to depart from the traditional club design of stripes for a first team kit. That’s not to say I don’t mind designs being changed – I always enjoy seeing new kits, plain or patterned, although often the simpler ones are best and I also like those that have a nod to past history – I give you the Republic of Ireland and their blue jerseys that they wore against Qatar last November as an example. But while I applaud the idea of kits being designed to help supporters with colour blindness enjoy the game more, I just hope the idea isn’t exploited too extravagantly by clubs and manufacturers, who spot the chance of introducing more extravagantly designed kits. As much as possible, football kits should represent the club or country while respecting the traditions of the colours. Let’s not start making them look like jockey’s riding colours.
However, Barcelona’s first choice kit this season is, for me, an absolute horror and the worrying thing is that if there is

GALWAY UNITED 1 ST PATRICK'S ATH 4
MIDFIELDER Eddie Gormley kept St. Patrick's Athletic's hopes of a place in Europe next season alive when he blasted a superb hat-trick at Terryland Park on Saturday night. The home side had gone in front from a Ricky O'Flaherty header after nine minutes, but it was St. Pat's who proceeded to dominate the game. Jason Byrne levelled matters in the 23rd minute when slipping the ball past youth international keeper Adrian Cronin after two of St. Pat's three Galwegians, Johnny Glynn and Noel Mernagh had set up the chance against their home town club. And they were ahad two minutes later when Gormley capitalised on a poor Gordon Brett clearance to crack a magnificent left-footed volley past a helpless Cronin. The young keeper twice denied Jason Byrne in the third quarter before Campbell released Gormley on half-way in the 71st minute and he ran 40 yards 2022 Season • Vol. 34 • No.04 • St Patrick’s Athletic v Dundalk
before tucking the ball beyond the stranded Cronin. Consolation came for Galway eight minutes from time when O'Flaherty finished off the rebound after goalkeeper Garrett Byrne had blocked sub Billy Clery's diving header to score his 15th goal of the season and bring him level with Cork City's John Caulefield as joint top scorer in the league. St Pat’s History Walking Tour Dermot Looney
More than 50 Saints fans availed of the glorious sunshine on Saturday March 26th as they took in the inaugural St Pat’s History Walking Tour. Leaving from Richmond Park, the tour took in a variety of important locations throughout club history before finishing at the 15 Acres in the Phoenix Park, the site of our first competitive match. Participants learned about the history of Richmond Park, a site associated with the Guinness family before its use as a sports ground in the late 19th century by St Patrick’s GAA club and, likely, soldiers based across Emmet Rd in Richmond Barracks. Our famous old ground first saw League of Ireland action in the 1920’s with Brideville FC based here, before a host of junior teams rented out the ground. One of them, Bellville, hosted the first St Patrick’s Athletic game at the ground in October 1930, a 5-5 thriller in the Intermediate League – albeit the Saints were the away team. Wikipedia myths were busted as those on the tour were told that Pat’s didn’t move into the ground until 1939, and ground-shared for the first five years with fellow LSL club St Paul’s, who they faced numerous times in the “Richmond Park Derby.”
26
Next up was the Inchicore Railway Works, where the original club members came together to form a football team. The tour learned about the original 1898 St Patrick’s Football Club, formed on St Patrick’s Terrace in the Works Estate, adjacent to the Pond Field football pitch. The tour continued to The Ranch estate off Sarsfield Road, home to many great Pat’s players of old including Matty Geoghegan and Jimmy “Timber” Cummins. A more recent player, John Cleary, was an unexpected guest and spoke about his time at the club playing alongside the likes of Paul McGrath. The next stop was in Chapelizod, where the tour discussed the home grounds of the club over the years, including the two pitches used in Chapelizod in the 1930’s and 1950’s. The final stop on the day was the 15 Acres in the Phoenix Park, the venue of St Pat’s first competitive game back in 1930. Participants raised €350 on the day for Frontline Bikes, the local social enterprise bike shop which provides great support for those recovering from addiction and a great community service with renovating and repairing bikes. Many thanks to John Keegan, who organised the event, and the Patron Saints for their support on the day.

St Pats v Drogheda Match Report Pre-Match Hello, my name is Avril, and I am at the Pats match on 4th April 2022. It was raining earlier but it has stopped now. At the moment the two teams are warming up for the match. Today we are against Drogheda. For the first time I am sitting in the commentary room with my grandad (Brian Kerr) and his friend Paddy Dillon. My favourite Pat’s player is Darragh Burns; he is only 19! We got 2 golden goal tickets in the bar before the match. The first one is in the 1st minute and the second is for the 18th minute. I think the match is starting soon. I smell the delicious smell of curry chips. Bye for now I will be back at half time. Second Half To be honest its not looking good for us 15 minutes left in the game and … Oh wait we just scored!!! Its now a draw! I hope we can get another goal in 6 minutes and win! I believe we can! Bye for now Somebody just got hurt for Drogheda so I thought I would take this time to write there is only 2 minutes left and we’re still tied. We drew, at least we didn’t lose! My grandad is still doing commenting I am going home in the car with my grandad. I’ll be home soon and, in my pyjamas, so this is the end of the report. To all the people out there who are Pats fans or want to be I have one more thing to say…
ONCE A SAINT, ALWAYS A SAINT!!! (Thanks to Avril Kerr O'Neill, age 9, for allowing us to print her report and we encourage any Pats fans with budding writers / artists / poets please send your entries into the programme - stpatsprogramme@gmail.com).
