Good Evening Welcome to Richmond Park for our third home game of the season, and our second issue of the Saint following our double edition against Sligo and Shamrock Rovers. I unfortunately missed the Sligo game but it was some atmosphere last Friday week, when we deservedly took down our dear Dublin rivals with a gutsy, disciplined and cohesive performance. Chris Forrester lead the game from start to finish and a lovely winner to cap it off.

Good Evening I'd like to welcome you all to Richmond Park and especially our visitors from UCD. These notes were written before Friday's trip to Ballybofey but I think it's fair to say that we've seen a very promising start both for the League as a whole and for our own campaign.

When attendances at games were severely restricted by the pandemic, many of us saw one possible silver lining. There's no doubt that we come to appreciate something all the more when it's denied to us, and our hopes that there'd be a big rebound in crowd numbers this season are bearing fruit, judging by the number of sold-out games so far. Our first four games were played in front of capacity or near-capacity crowds and the difference this made to the atmosphere and excitement was palpable. In particular, as Shamrock Rovers piled on the pressure in search of the late goal that was their hallmark in previous seasons, I am quite certain that it was the passionate support of three and a half thousand Pats fans that gave our players the belief and determination to hold on for a welldeserved win. If we can maintain this level of support throughout the season (and record season ticket sales are a good omen) there will be many more

super Fridays under the lights in Richmond.

Apart from the crowds, the second positive feature of the League's early days is that it looks like it's going to be the most competitive in quite a while. Those pundits (and they were the majority) who saw the season as being another stroll for the titleholders will have been given pause for thought by their defeats to Derry and ourselves. At this early stage, I believe that there are at least 6 teams in the Division who will see themselves as credible participants in a title chase.

All in all, it has the makings of a wonderful season.

For ourselves, most pundits saw us as Top Three material, but our confidence was inevitably dented by successive defeats to Sligo and Bohs. However, the performance against the champions showed that the potential is certainly there. I remain confident that we'll be part of the title race and I hope we can reinforce those credentials tonight.

It has been an interesting start to the season with no shortage of ups and downs.

At the time of going to print, we are all in good spirits after a hard-fought victory against Shamrock Rovers. That win came at just the right time.

Following a convincing performance and result against Shelbourne on the opening night, we were disappointed not to follow that up with a big performance against Sligo Rovers in our first home game.

On the night, the team didn't perform as well as it can and, crucially, we didn't defend to the level required. When performance levels fall short, defeat becomes a distinct possibility and that's exactly what happened.

The morale in the camp remained high ahead of the derby fixture against Bohemians a few nights later. With a huge following making the trip across the Liffey, the players and management were desperate to reward that support.

Unfortunately, we left Dalymount Park empty-handed.

The three goals conceded in the games against Sligo and Bohs were all poor from our point of view and should have been avoided. There was no shying

away from that. We had plenty to work on ahead of the visit of Rovers. It was pleasing to bounce back against the champions. The manner of the victory was the most satisfying aspect. Unlike the two games before it, we defended well as a unit and showed grit and determination when it was needed most to see out the win.

The winning goal came from a corner, which was the result of some very positive attacking play. Darragh Burns's delivery was quality, which will come as no surprise to anyone who watches him in action regularly.

I've heard some people describe Chris Forrester's goal as a collector's item because it went in off his head. That may be the case statistically, but Chris is much better in the air than he ever gets credit for.

The support in our games to date has been nothing short of outstanding. In three away matches against Dublin rivals – the President's Cup included – our ticket allocation has been sold out. It can't get any better than that. On top of that, the backing we have received here in Inchicore has been different

class. For the Shamrock Rovers game in particular, the atmosphere was electric. When you come out on the right side of the result on those occasions, it's extra special.

Due to print deadlines, I am writing these notes prior to our trip to Ballybofey to take on Finn Harps. The games have been coming thick and fast, and this evening we welcome UCD to Richmond Park. 'The Students' have a squad packed with exceptionally talented young players who are capable of causing problems for any team in the division. Andy Myler has done a great job at Belfield.

UCD operate under a very specific model and Andy has shaped an impressive unit within those parameters.

Our target is victory, as it is in every game. We might not have the same rivalry with UCD as we do with Rovers, Shels and Bohs, but the reward for victory is exactly the same. We need you behind us like you have been since the season started.

Oh My Word!

The worm was due to turn. There had been too many near misses against them in recent times.

With that said, successive defeats against Sligo Rovers and Bohemians didn't imbue the faithful with belief that this would be the one. Nor did it fill them with despondency. With such a turnover of personnel in the winter months, a bedding-in period was inevitable. The football term for this generally involves the word 'gel'.

Yours truly would be late to the Dublin derby 10 days ago.

Couldn't be helped. Mercifully, only a little bit late.

Walking briskly along Southern Cross Avenue, where trips to see granny were an integral part of yesteryear, the atmospheric scent of fireworks permeated the air. With each step, the soundtrack to our great day at Lansdowne Road last November became more audible.

Oh Saint Patrick's…

As St Michael's Church came into view, so too did Emmet Road and the big red gate – a portal to God's green acre. In that moment, we also glimpsed the first living, breathing piece of evidence that they were in town.

Police on horseback. ***** In search of references to past disappointments against them, we could venture back further

than last season. But there is no need – 2021 provided ample disappointment at the hands of the Hoops. Had the planets lined up differently, our heartache would have been tempered. Losses could have been draws. Draws could have been wins.

Shoulda woulda coulda. But it's true.

At Tallaght Stadium a year ago, It looked like the perfect start to a campaign had been secured when Roberto Lopes diverted the ball into his own net with just three minutes remaining.

The Saints fans went wild… in their homes.

Aaron Greene, an ever-willing party pooper, ensured the celebrations would be cut short with a minute remaining. It was OK though. A draw at the home of the champions wasn't a result to lose heart over.

A mere seven weeks and a day later, St Patrick's had the opportunity to go one better.

In glorious May sunshine, Ireland's finest took the field in Inchicore. Billed as the first topof-the-table clash between these sides since sepia-toned days, Richmond should have been rocking.

Crowd or no crowd, it mattered little when a rejuvenated Chris Forrester fired home the

opening goal in the early stages. The Saints were up for it.

There were chances to add a second. You need to take them.

Graham Burke's leveller had us flinging our remote controls across the couch in frustration.

But as the clock ticked beyond 90, conclusions were already being formed. They were similar to those of 50 days earlier: a draw against Rovers, with their embarrassment of riches, is not the end of the world.

But there would be no draw.

Danny Mondroiu made sure of that deep into injury time. In that moment, we were better off in our homes, as were they.

Expectation and heartache took a day off in late July when the hosts emerged comfortable victors. And then it all returned with vengeance in September.

The opinion-givers said defeat for St Patrick's would finally end the title race. In reality, it was already over. To suggest otherwise would have been an exercise in straw-clutching.

That's not to say we didn't want to see the men in red get one over on them. Of course we did.

We always do. The possession was there, but the end product most certainly was not. It was a recurring theme of an otherwise strong season.

@ronanoflaherty deep into injury time again – we didn't have the energy to act disconsolate. Very little had changed, in terms of the league table. An FAI Cup semi-final was four weeks away and that would take on a heightened sense of importance.

Just like last season, Forrester gave St Patrick's the lead. It was a collector's item with his head following Darragh Burns's latest moment of artistry.

This time, the team hung on. Painful memories of late concessions rose to the surface as Jack Byrne sized up a free kick in the latter stages. His build-up had more tugs of the shorts and body jolts than Rafa Nafal sizing up a serve against Novak Djokovic. The end product could not be compared to a Nadal ace.

As Emmet Road came further into view, so too did the sight of more police on horseback.

The worm had turned.

The warning was appreciated, but our nostrils had already been alerted.

They are majestic, beautiful creatures, but it does our league a disservice to see them on patrol outside grounds.

Their next trip to these parts is pencilled in for June.

Inside the stadium, the sight was one to savour. The match was already six minutes old but my gaze wasn't yet fixed on the players. The place was packed to the rafters. A Kodak moment if ever there was one. That this is becoming something of a regular occurrence across the league should be celebrated. The culture shift is real and it's happening before our eyes.

On this Friday night, so packed was Richmond Park that some spectators looked a little lost. They stood awkwardly in areas intended as walkways.

The back of the Camac Terrace, north section, is my spot. That's where the crew stands. To be in their presence is to be easy in one’s own skin. In a further indication of what may have been the biggest crowd since the visit of Cork City 23 years ago, the Camac Terrace was several rows deeper than usual.

Ronan O’Flaherty Opposition Watch Paul Maguire Although the Students might be most observers candidates for a swift return to the first division, UCD will be buoyed by their impressive campaign last season.

After comfortably finishing in third place to qualify for the playoffs, they saw off Treaty United 4-2 over two legs before beating Bray Wanderers 2-0 at Dalymount Park.

They took full advantage of Waterford’s calamitous end to 2021 and deservedly beat the Blues 2-1 in the promotion / relegation play-off at Richmond Park last November. Goals from Dara Keane and Colm Whelan sealed their Premier Division status after a two-year absence.

Manager Andy Myler will be delighted to have hung onto the aforementioned Whelan and his Ireland under-age international colleague Liam Kerrigan for 2022, both of whom were vital for the Students last season.

@PaulGoS Elsewhere in the transfer window, UCD brought in Alex Dunne and Dylan Duffy from Shamrock Rovers, Thomas Lonergan from Shelbourne, and Kian Moore from Bohemians. Their only departure was Paul Doyle to Dundalk.

UCD 2022 league campaign opened with a tough away trip to Tallaght Stadium and they had their fair share of chances, but they were outclassed by Rovers as goals from Sean Hoare, Daniel Mandroiu and Graham Burke saw the Students lose 3-0. Next up were consecutive home games against Finn Harps and another side promoted last year, Shelbourne. Both games finished 0-0 to get the Students their first two points of the season.

Last time out UCD travelled to Head in the Game Park to take on another side tipped to be around the lower end of the Premier Division, Drogheda United. The Students settled better early on but for all their dominance it was Drogheda who had the first chance but Williams finished poorly from 12 yards as UCD keeper Lorcan Healy held his effort. The hosts took the lead after 20 minutes when Deegan rifled home from 20 yards after the ball ran loose from a Williams cross and four minutes later Drogs doubled their advantage in stunning style after Lyons curled in a beautiful leftfooted effort into the top corner past a hapless Healy. Just before the interval the game was effectively over when Lyons got his second of the night. Things were looking ominous for the

Students but in fairness they played their way into the game and shortly after Evan Caffrey should have pulled one back for the visitors just four minutes after the interval they were given a lifeline when Sam Todd neatly volleyed Liam Kerrigan’s in swinging corner home from close range five minutes later. It was UCD’s first goal of the league season. The revival didn’t last long however as Drogs scored their fourth through Dean Williams.

Liam Kerrigan scored a second for UCD when he pounced on a poor punch by Drogs keeper McCabe and volleyed deliciously into an empty net from 25 yards but it was too little too late as the Students lost an entertaining game 4-2.

For a team who scored 55 goals in 27 league games last season, taking 3.5 matches to score suggests the step-up to the Premier Division may be a step too far for this squad but on the other hand, avoiding defeat against Harps and Shels, two clubs who could well be rivals for survival come October gives cause for hope and UCD have pulled off many the surprise over the years and should Colm Whelan hit a run of form they will pick up points as the season unfolds. On a side note Pats fans will be glad to see the name Osam on a teamsheet in Richmond Park again as Paul’s son Evan takes the field tonight, we wish him and his teammates well.

First black player to play in League Seán Creedon division of the League of Ireland; there was no first division like we have now. Ray’s stay with Longford was brief and he moved back to Dublin and Drumcondra.

Drums had been Rovers’ great rivals in the fifties.

On April 23, 1961 Ray was in the Drums team that were beaten 2-1 by the Saints in the FAI Cup final at Dalymount Park. The following season Drums won the League of Ireland championship which was Ray’s first full season with the club.

He was in the Drumcondra team that lost to German club Nuremberg in the first round of the European Cup in 1961. Drums lost 5-0 in Germany on August 23 and 4-1 in the second leg in Tolka Park on September 13.

The first black player to play in the League of Ireland was Ray Keogh. He played for Shamrock Rovers, Drumcondra, Drogheda and Cork Hibernians and also for Ards and Portadown in the Irish League.

Raphael or Ray as he was better known, spent his early years in the Mother and Baby home on the Navan Road. As a mixed-race boy in Ireland at the start of the Second World War, Ray didn’t have the easiest of starts in life.

He was adopted by the Keogh family in Mulvey Park, Dundrum, close to Shamrock Rovers old ground Glenmalure Park.

Ray joined The Hoops after playing schoolboy football with Castleville in Ringsend and Home Farm. He played for the Rovers’ reserve side in 1958 before making his first team debut a year later.

Rovers had won the League of Ireland in 1956-57 and in ‘58-59 with a team containing several Irish internationals and it was difficult for Ray to get first team football at Milltown.

A move was needed for Ray to play regularly and initially he joined Longford Town in the 1959-60 season. Longford were then playing in the ‘B’

The following season Drumcondra qualified for the new Fairs Cup, where they became the first League of Ireland club to win a European game. Ray was in the Drums team that made history when beating Danish club Odense 4-1 in Tolka on October 3, 1962. Drums lost the second leg 4-2 in Denmark, but won the tie 6-5 on aggregate.

Drums were then drawn against Bayern Munich in the next round where they lost 6-1 on aggregate.

Ray didn’t play in the first leg in Germany where Bayern won 6-1, but he started the second leg in Tolka where Drums won 1-0 thanks to a Billy Dixon goal which was set up by Keogh Ray was a regular on League of Ireland selections and made his League debut in a 1-1 draw against the Scottish League at Dalymount in September 1961.

The Dubliner’s next move was to Ards. The town of Newtownards was overwhelmingly Protestant and it must have been somewhat daunting for a black, catholic from The Republic venturing over the border in 1964.

Ray spent two seasons with Ards and was selected for the Irish League in an inter-league game against the Scottish League at Ibrox. He later said that Ards gave him his best-ever contract. He would receive a

monthly cheque from Harold Black, the former Ards chairman, whose company Blaxnit at one time sponsored a North-South competition.

He later spent a short spell with Portadown. During his time playing in the Irish League Ray continued to live in Dublin where he trained with Rovers. He shared the driving duties with Glentoran’s Dublin-based defender Eamonn Byrne.

Ray got a lot of abuse playing in the Irish League. He used to wear a crucifix around his neck and one day an opposing fan accosted him as he left the field with his colleagues at half-time and tried to pull the crucifix off his neck.

His next move would take him to the other end of the island, moving to Cork, where he played for Hibs for one season.

Then on to Drogheda who had only joined the League in 1963.

Drogheda qualified for the FAI Cup final against Limerick in 1971, but by that stage Ray had moved on.

Ray dropped out of senior football and move into coaching, first with Tullamore Town where as player-manager he won the Intermediate Cup and the League of Ireland ‘B’ division.

Then he moved on to Parkvilla in Navan and later to Bluebell. His last move was to his local club Glenmore Celtic.

He worked as mechanic for Premier Dairies in Rathfarnham for most of his life. Ray also had his own garage at the back of his house in Farrenboley Park. He died in Our Lady’s Hospice, Harold’s Cross in August 2019, two months short of what would have been his 80th birthday.

Ray and his wife Kathleen (nee Burke) had three sons Jeffrey, Justin and Ray junior, who played for Home Farm, St Joseph’s Boys and Broadford Rovers. Their daughter Louise played soccer for Bank of Ireland where she worked for 18 years.

Louise is now the manager of Rosemount Family Resource Centre in Dundrum.

A View from Afar Ian Templeman

One of the many good things about this league is the number of good quality podcasts that are available to listen to, discussing the latest news, views and action from across the SSE Airtricity League landscape.

I try to catch as many as I can, and usually first on the list is LOI Central, the always excellent podcast offering hosted by Johnny Ward and Dan McDonnell. The issue that was released in the run up to the Shamrock Rovers game was a particularly good listen, as the guest was League Director Mark Scanlon The almost two-hour long chat between the three guys in the studio covered a range of issues affecting the present and future course of the domestic game here, including the development of the football industry in the country, pyramid structure, women's leagues, stadia and facilities and UEFA rankings. All of these are topics that I may well look to return to in future issues of The Saint as there are many crossovers with my experiences in non-league football over here in England, but there was one particular segment of the show that was of most interest to me, and that was the discussion surrounding the development of LOITV for this season.

Any regular readers of this

column will know that for me, the arrival of LOITV and its predecessor Watch LOI was, to use the expression I have used before, akin to Christmas come early for me. I suffered years of frustration having to just follow Twitter for Friday night updates, seeing RTE live games being blanked out in the UK, and then some slight progress was made when footage was available via betting websites, albeit with some very dodgy camera work at times that often rendered the footage as better than nothing but frustrating to watch. All of that frustration and irritation has been blown away with the advent of the coverage we have been able to enjoy online since the summer of 2020, which has now developed into the offering that is LOITV in the 2022 season.

For me, the novelty of being able to arrange my Friday night around watching a Pats game live has yet to wear off, and I continue to greatly appreciate having the chance to do that. So, for a service that I think is great, it came as a bit of a surprise when during the podcast, Mark Scanlon said that there had been criticism

received about the structure of LOI TV for this season. It appears that that the main source of complaint has been a lack of a season ticket pass, but Mark explained that there were a number of reasons for those not being in place this time around.

The first point was that there was a feeling among clubs that season ticket sales would have been affected if a season ticket passes for LOITV had been made available. The second issue raised was that there simply wasn’t enough past evidence to suggest that the take up would be sufficient to cover the cost of the production set up, based on the figures and take up in 2021.

The collective opinions of all the clubs was that they didn’t want a season pass in place, and that is how the package that is available now was developed for the 2022 season.

In general, I think any criticism of the LOITV coverage so far is misplaced and unfair, and if the biggest gripe is the lack of a season pass, I don’t think that is a such a big deal and probably shows that the current offering is

I personally can’t see that there is much point in having a season pass unless kick off times for games are staggered, like they were during the pandemic, and you could gorge on LOI football for hours on end as games rolled on back to back. But now that spectators are back at games and Friday night fixture lists are established once again, a season pass would only really be something for the real enthusiast who had the time and inclination to go into major catch up mode watching all the games in the days afterwards.

I’ve also noted some criticism of commentary teams being somewhat biased in favour of the home team too, but I don’t really have a problem with that either.

If you go to an away game in person you are used to being outnumbered by home supporters, and if the host club’s commentators do have an obvious slant to the commentary, I think you could be accused of falling into a category marked “easily irritated” if it bothers you.

Besides, from what I have seen and heard so far, I don’t think much of the criticism is really justified anyway. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but mine is that with the likes of Con Murphy at Shamrock Rovers games, or our own Jamie Moore and Ger O’Brien on Pats home

There are other small add ons that might help with the matchday experience, such as team sheets being e-mailed to subscribers, or available to download from an e-mailed link or a central website. These are available to the media a good 45 minutes before kick off, and while most media take a photo of the sheet and post it on Twitter, it’s not beyond the wit of man to have a link to page within the LOITV website too to save you searching for it.

However, if you were to ask me what enhancements I’d like to see looked at, maybe a club season ticket for home games, or even away games is a possibility, and perhaps a monthly season pass to cover all games, or a “five games for the price of four” deal might be an idea later in the season if there are games spread through midweeks due to LOI clubs having progressed in European competitions.

But it certainly appears that the popularity of LOITV is increasing, and Mark Scanlon did have some good news to share in that the opening three weeks of the season had seen what he described a “strong numbers”

taking up individual match passes, in particular for games that had good attendances. He also added that a review of the package is ongoing, with staging points midway through the season and at the end of the year, which will major on the viewing figures, and trends such as take up from away supporters, I think it all sounds pretty promising, and if a package that I already think is pretty good is going to be under continuous review for improvement, all the better. From a purely selfish point of view, it looks like my years of frustration at the lack of available coverage over here in the UK are finally over. Friday nights, and occasional other midweek nights like tonight, are now established in my routine as being Pats nights - and long may that continue to be the case.

On Wednesday before last, Moses Simon’s decisive penalty released euphoria in the Stade La Beaujoire and provoked a pitch invasion, the first one seen at FC Nantes since a 2013 promotion decider against FC Sedan which ended their torrid spell in Ligue 2. They had just defeated AS Monaco to reach the final of the Coupe de France, their first one since 2004. In a spell of 11 days, Les Canaries have silenced runaway leaders PSG with a 31 victory and have sealed their place versus OGC Nice in this year’s cup final.

1951-52: ENTRY TO THE LOI PART TWO: THE SHIELD CAMPAIGN The League of Ireland Shield has all but disappeared from collective memory nowadays, but for half a century it was a huge part of the Irish football calendar. It had started alongside the League proper in 1921 and would continue for another fifty years. Various formats were used over the years but for the 1951/52 season, each of the 12 teams were scheduled to play each other once between August and November. The Shield was regarded as a serious competition, lesser in importance to the more prestigious League (where each team played each other twice) and the blue riband of the FAI Senior Cup, but of more significance than the Dublin City Cup, Leinster Senior Cup and other minor trophies.

As luck would have it, Pat’s first game in the Shield saw the same opponents as in the Dublin City Cup; Drumcondra, again at Tolka Park. “St Patrick’s Turn Tables On Drums In Thriller,” ran the headline in the following day’s Sunday Independent, noting an improved all-round performance from the Saints, full of teamwork and fighting spirit. “Seldom during the game was there any attempt to individualise.” Drums had gone one-up on 17 minutes, but Pat’s were level six minutes later, when Gibbons netted from a Galvin cross, with a White goal four minutes into the second half securing a 2-1 Pat’s win. The

But they were brought down to earth the following week with a 3-0 loss away to Dundalk. The Lilywhites had gone one up early in the second half before Tommy Desay gained the unenviable distinction of being the first Pat’s player to be sent off in the League of Ireland era, following a dismissal on 70 minutes described as “a harsh decision” by the Irish Independent.

Pat’s returned to winning ways the following week with a 4-2 home win against Bohemians. “St Pats Were Easy Winners” noted the Irish Press headline. The Irish Independent credited two Saints players with strong performances; inside-right Cassidy and centreforward Staunton. Cassidy had scored twice with Staunton and Gibbons completing the scoresheet. The win left Pat’s with 7 points from their five games, just one off the Shield leaders Dundalk.

Hopes of advancing up the table, however, were dashed with a 4-1 defeat the following week away to Waterford in Kilcohan Park.

Gibbons opened the scoring for the Saints just before half time but the home side responded by scoring four past Pat’s keeper McCreevy, who had been selected ahead of Kinahan.
