Good Evening Welcome along to Richmond Park for the first game of the 2022 season, and you hold in your hands the first printed copy of The Saint for almost exactly years. It's great to have it back in its traditional format, and we will continue to publish it digitally too. In fact, our best ever issues were produced in the digital realm, and we have had to cut back on pagination to physically produce the programme on a cost effective basis, but I'm sure there is still plenty in these pages for you to enjoy. Great to be working with Joe O'Rourke on design and the rest of the programme team again. After such a dramatic, and rewarding, end to the 2021 season, we enjoyed (and at times endured) a very eventful off season with plenty of departures and arrivals. Most notably on the managerial front. I'd like to welcome Tim Clancy to Richmond Park, and early signs are indeed providing reassurance that we have a very capable management team in our dugout. We

also have a host of new players, and a significant percentage of familiar faces, wo thr balance feels about right as we look into an exciting season, both at home and abroad. Last week's win over Shels was very satisfactory, with great displays all over the pitch. It's great to see Christ Forrester running games in the centre of the park, wearing the armband when required with authority. It's great to see Chris playing the game with a smile on his face, and his loyalty to the club, and commitment to what makes St Patrick's Athletic special is very evident. Anyway, let's enjoy tonight's game (and the game against Shamrock Rovers as this is a double edition), it's only the start of a long journey. Buckle up, it's going to be exciting, and The Saint will be with you every step of the way. All the best, Ruairi Kavanagh Editor The Saint

President’s Welcome Tom O’Mahony

@jimmyedwards41

Good Evening Good evening and a very warm welcome back to Richmond Park. It's almost two years since you've been able to enjoy the ritual of leafing through the printed programme as you wait for the match to start, so I hope you'll enjoy the experience once again. I must compliment Ruairi, Joe and the team on the very high quality of the digital version but it's great to be able to reestablish this important part of the matchday experience. This programme covers our first two home games and what games they are, with both of the other members of last season's top three coming to test our 2022 credentials. I welcome the players, officials and supporters of both Shamrock Rovers and Sligo Rovers. There is a genuine sense of optimism around our league as the new season gets underway. The deprivations of the last two years have made people realise just how much they miss football when they can't access it, and, like other clubs, we've seen a big jump in season ticket sales. Our season opener away to Shelbourne felt like a throwback to the golden days of the Pats-Shels rivalry twenty years ago, with a sold-out stadium, ticket touts on Richmond Road and a gripping encounter that was a good bit closer than the 3-0 scoreline suggests. Since my last set of programme notes, we've had an eventful time on and off the pitch. The FAI Cup Final was a wonderful occasion, our team and our fans did the club proud, and the excitement was nailbiting to the very last kick of the ball.

Some subsequent events won't be commented on here, but we are very happy to have Tim Clancy and Jon Daly on board and I'm sure that supporters have been impressed with the squad they have assembled and the performances to date. We also saw change in our Community Programme, with the departure of Dave Morrissey to a new role with Dublin City Council. We were overwhelmed by the quality of applicants to replace Dave, and after a very close competition we were very happy to appoint Niall Cully to the post. We thank Dave for a superb job over the last four years and wish Niall every success in the role. We've also ventured into new territory for an Irish club, working with the Pakistani authorities and an international sports agency in their efforts to improve the game in that country, including through offering young players the opportunity to spend time in our Academy. This in turn has seen the beginning of a relationship between the club and the Pakistani community in Ireland which we hope will develop over time. As close seasons go, it's fair to say it has been a busy one. I'm convinced that we're going in the right direction, both on and off the pitch, and I believe you'll see the proof of that this season. In the meantime, enjoy the football! Tom O'Mahony President St Patrick's Athletic FC

Ronan O’Flaherty

Tim Clancy

Welcome to Richmond Park for our first home game of the 2022 Premier Division campaign. Allow me to start by saying it is an honour to be the manager of St Patrick's Athletic. I was grateful to be given the opportunity by one of the biggest clubs in the country and this is a night myself, the players and the staff have been looking forward to for weeks. There is a strong squad of players here at St Pat's and we feel we are a match for any team in the division. Since the end of last season, there have been plenty of comings and goings and the aim is to bed the new lads in as quickly as possible, which has been working out well. Our options have been bolstered in recent days with the return of Ronan Coughlan to training, while Paddy Barrett isn't too far away either. Jon Daly has come in as my assistant, which I'm very happy about. Myself and Jon came up against each other during our playing days in Scotland and we subsequently did our A Licence together. He is a great addition to the club and the players will benefit immensely from his contribution. I also feel fortunate to have people of such high calibre here, including

Alan Mathews, Sean O'Connor, Pat Jennings, Sam Rice, Chris Colburn and Christy O'Neill. We go into this evening's game against Sligo Rovers on the back of a very encouraging 3-0 victory over Shelbourne on the opening night of the season. After losing the President's Cup on penalties the previous week – a game we were unfortunate not to win – we were confident the team would put in another good shift at Tolka Park. There was a great buzz around the occasion last Friday, with the Damien Duff factor obviously playing a part in that. But derbies are always big occasions and we were just delighted to get off to a winning start. All three goals were outstanding in different ways and there was much to enthuse over in our overall play, particularly going forward. That said, it wasn't a perfect performance – there's no such thing – and we identified a number of areas to work on in training. Sligo Rovers had a very good season last year, finishing third, so opponents don't come much stronger in this league. Their

manager, Liam Buckley, is no stranger to these parts having enjoyed two successful spells as manager of St Pat's. I would like to extend a warm welcome to Liam, his players and everyone connected with Rovers in attendance. There is nothing quite like 7.45pm on a Friday under the floodlights. All the hard graft you put in on the training ground is geared towards these nights. As a player, I always enjoyed coming to Richmond Park. It is compact and atmospheric, which we will look to use to our advantage. The travelling support in Drumcondra last week and Tallaght a fortnight ago was outstanding. The 900-or-so who cheered the team on in Tolka Park, on a bitterly cold night, really made their presence felt and we look forward to more of that this evening. We know it takes positive results to entice the crowds back every week and that is at the forefront of our thoughts ahead of tonight's encounter. Enjoy the match, Tim Clancy

Oh My Word! Ronan O’Flaherty

Something is happening. More people are following the floodlights. The signs were there before the pandemic. The Irish public had started waking up to what was on their doorstep. An environment conducive to positive change had finally emerged. As the rich clubs in the biggest leagues have become detached from their local communities, clubs in this country have actively become more immersed in theirs. It is nearly three months to the day – what a day – that 37,126 congregated at Lansdowne Road. St Patrick's and Bohemians received precious little assistance in the promotion of the match and yet they pulled in the biggest FAI Cup final attendance since 1968. Next time, with just a little bit of help spreading the word, the final will be a sellout. The President's Cup is viewed by many as little more than a glorified pre-season friendly. In previous years, it has barely registered. The latest instalment, at Tallaght Stadium two weeks ago, drew a crowd of 5,426 – a record. The attendance of 4,150 at Tolka Park for the season opener last Friday was the latest indication of how far we have come. Had there been room for more, that figure would have been bigger. On the same evening, 5,232 punters paid in to see Shamrock Rovers versus UCD. It all points to a growing appetite for live football. Tolka Park is no longer the jewel in the crown. The Ballybough End has been downgraded from a stand to a terrace, while the Drumcondra Stand is no longer deemed safe to house spectators. The Riverside Stand is still in operation, but at a vastly reduced capacity. Until recently, Tolka was condemned. The clock was ticking down to the arrival of the bulldozers on Richmond Road. With no incentive to carry out work, or even just maintain the ground, it fell into disrepair. That was then.

18

This is now. An awakening-of-sorts has happened and the Shelbourne board is fighting hard to retain the famous old venue. We wish them well in their endeavours. This is bigger than any one club. Our league has already lost too many grounds. Not so long ago, pressure was quietly but intensely being placed on St Patrick's Athletic to groundshare with Shamrock Rovers at Tallaght Stadium. The Pat's For Richmond group played an important role in ensuring this never happened, as did the arrival of Garrett Kelleher as club owner. We can relate to Shels' current plight. In the same way that St Patrick's didn't want to play second fiddle to Rovers in Tallaght Stadium, Shelbourne have no desire to be considered the secondary act to Bohemians at the traditional home of Irish football. There has been bad blood between St Patrick's and Shels in the past. The kind of bad blood that is not worth revisiting on these pages. Last Friday felt like a trip to Tolka pre-2002. It was fun again. The live cameras were rolling and “Sold out” signs adorned the turnstile gates. Away fans congregated in the Ballybough End. On the day when Storm Eunice raged, it seemed an inhospitable act to make your visitors stand for two-plus hours on a cement mound completely open to the elements. Mercifully, warmth was provided by Darragh Burns' breathtaking goal. By the time Jason McClelland put the finishing touch to a well-worked move, the insulation provided by the embrace of visiting supporters kept the biting cold away. Earlier, Mark Doyle had glided up the pitch before slotting home. No wonder Tim Clancy was so keen to bring him with him. Any 3-0 win is a good win. A 3-0 victory away to a

@ronanoflaherty Dublin rival on the first night of the season is extra-special. And it could have been more. Chris Forrester, outstanding throughout, stung the palms of Lewis Webb. Before that, Billy King found the upright from all of 30 yards. It was a memorable night for the Saints on a night when so much of the narrative seemed to revolve around Damien Duff. Duffer's postmatch interview was a curious one, as he chose not to credit his opponents with a deserved victory. Such interviews are, understandably, difficult things for some managers. Emotions are running high and the right words can prove inaccessible. We hope this was the case and that, upon closer inspection of the game later that night, his take on proceedings was altered, and perhaps more humble. Earlier on Friday, Shelbourne officially pulled out of the plan to groundshare with Bohemians. What that now means for Dalymount Park is unclear but, unlike Tolka, it isn't under threat of demolition. Shelbourne's request to purchase the ground from Dublin City Council has been met with a positive response. However, the financial responsibility associated with seeing through such a request is daunting, as outlined by the Council's statement. It said: "Dublin City Council has agreed in good faith to examine the proposal in detail and will reconvene meetings with the board of Shelbourne FC when further detail has been provided, which is expected to be received from Shelbourne FC within the next two weeks. The City Council will then carry out its due diligence on the proposal. "Dublin City Council bought out the legal interests of various parties in both Dalymount and Tolka Park in 2016 as part of its strategic plan to develop a municipal stadium at Dalymount Park to ensure the viability of League of Ireland football on the northside of Dublin. "Since acquiring both grounds, significant costs have been incurred by the City Council on an

annual basis to ensure that both stadiums meet the required League of Ireland stadium certification. "The City Council is willing to examine the proposal. However, it would be based on a cost recovery model for expenditure incurred by the City Council and a firm commitment from Shelbourne FC that Tolka Park can be re-developed in a reasonable period and that adequate finance is in place. We understand that the proposals will have no financial implications for either the City Council or the State." It's a financial challenge the likes of which no Irish football club has ever seen through. Whether they manage to save Tolka Park remains to be seen. The money involved is sobering. Twenty years ago, we might have had a different take on it all. But this is 2022, not 2002. We have all grown up. Any views expressed in this article are the contributor's own.

Patron Saints Dear Patron... What a season we had in 2021, 2nd in the league and that unforgettable penalty shootout win in a packed Aviva for our 4th ever FAI cup win. Hopefully we can match or improve on that this year. We all wish Tim Clancy and his management team and the new squad the best for this coming year and we hope that you realise that all Patron Saints play a big part in the continuing development of the club. The season started early for the committee with 3 committee meetings so far and we also had a very productive one with Anthony Delaney in the club last week – we plan to do this at least once a quarter. At the meeting we were told that, unfortunately, the work on the Camac toilets has been delayed but the club are working on getting this done asap The Patron Saints hope to organise more events this year and become more interactive with all Patron Saints and with this in mind we ask you to keep an eye on your E-mails and Patron Saints and Club social media platforms to be informed about forthcoming events. The first event to look out for is the raffle of last years sponsored players jersey. The Patron Saints sponsored Alfie Lewis last year

and the raffle will take place next week if all goes to plan. The Patrons would also like to announce that we are sponsoring a young, up and coming player in the form of Adam Murphy this year and hope he has a good season. As you are aware Away Tickets to Dublin Derbies will be in short supply this year and we wish to confirm that all Patron Saints that are not Season Ticket holders will be included in pre-sale ticket releases so again keep an eye on your email. As an aside if your Season Ticket was bought as a present, the pre-sale email may go to the person that purchased the ticket and not the bearer of the Season Ticket. If you are not getting the pre-sale email as a Patron Saint contact us at stpatssc@gmail.com or at the Patrons desk in the club shop on match nights. We are hoping to have a free Patrons 2022 pin badge available to all members in early March. When this comes in you can collect it at the Patrons Desk at any home match and if members are outside Ireland they can contact us and we should be able to sort out delivery by post.

As far as the season ahead is concerned, there are, of course, many new faces in the red and white ranks for us to get used to in the red and white, and I am looking forward to seeing how the squad gels together and who makes the quickest and biggest impact. The one signing that did interest me more that most was that of Eoin Doyle, who joined the club from Bolton Wanderers. As a resident of Bolton, and therefore someone who has the acquaintance of several Wanderers fans, it was obviously an eye-catching signing from my perspective, given that Eoin has been a favourite of fans in my neck of the woods over the time he has been plying his trade in

SLIGO ROVERS 1 ST PATRICK'S ATH 1

AS hard-earned points go, they don't come much harder than this. A goal down after four minutes andwith the Showgrounds faiihful in full cry, the championship mettle of St Patrick's Athletic was on the line. That the Saints survived was due to those trademark characteristics of theirs - resilience, organisation and patience. St Pat's have now drawn three games on the trot to allow Shelbourne and Bohemians close right up but this was a point gained, not two dropped, for Brian Kerrs men. PROBLEMS “Nothing is ever easy down here. Sligo were up for the game and they gave us lots of problems in the first twenty minules” admitted Kerr. Needing nothing less than a win to rekindle their own championship ambitions. Sligo hit St Pats with everything in their armoury but ran out of bullets after a rapid-fire start. Fittingly, Dave Campbell was the man who plucked the fat from the fire with thc 52nd minute equaliser to lift thc Saints back on lop of the Premier Division pile. As Sligo opened up with both barrels in a ferocious opening salvo, Campbell and his defensive

colleague, John McDonnell had more than one anxious moment. Both subsequently earned their corn. Campbell was caught flat-footed when Padraig Moran hared into thc inside-right channel to tack on to a threaded pass from David Reid. Moran got goal-side of Campbell, checked inside on to his favoured left-foot before spearing an angled drive between Gareth Byrne and the near post. It was Moran's tenth League goal of the season and the score set the tempo for a breathless opening half hour. Both teams had a goal disallowed, both 'keepers were kept on their toes as play pin-balled from box to box. Strikes from PauI Campbell and Brian Morris-Roe with two excellent fingertip saves while Andy Ramage shot straight at Gareth Byrne and Moran dragged into the side netting at the other end. It was fast, furious, stuff and the RTE OB Unit, present in Sligo for the first time since 1983, were kept on their toes. What a pity then that the entertainment level dipped appreciably thereafter. There were flurries of goal-mouth action here and there but once Campbell

2022 Season • Vol. 34 • No.01 • St Patrick’s Athletic v Sligo Rovers & Shamrock Rovers

equalised, a draw seemed inevitable. The central defender was given the freedom of the six-yard box after cousin Paul Campbell slung over a right wing cross. Campbell's first headed effort was parried by Mark McLean but Campbell moved in for the kill lo nod home his fourth goal of the season. All from play too which is not half bad for a centre-half. After St Pat's threatened briefly to get on top, Sligo rallied and Ian Gilzean forced a superb diving parry from Gareth Byrne on the hour. RESCUED James Mulligan then beat the off-side trap but instead of shooting, elected to square the ball across thc face of goal and McDonnell rescued the Saints with an 11th hour clearance. With time running out, Saints substitute Johnny Glynn flicked on for Paul Osam, who cut inside his marker, but was denied a matchwinning strike by the flailing legs of McLean. To lose three points would have been an injustice for Sligo. As it is, they trail St Pats by nine points with eight games to go. Steve Cotterill certainly won't concede the title fight but it's a long shot now.

ST PATRICK'S ATH 3 SHAMROCK ROVERS 1

ST. PATRICK'S ATHLETIC took another giant step towards what they hope will be their first League of Ireland championship title in over thirty years with this victory ot Harold's Cross yesterday. At the end of the day it was St Patrick's who had achieved everything, though they had to do so amid a volume of opinion that they had survived a clear offside decision for their first goal. The lead goal for Rovers came in spectacular fashion after only nine minutes. Curtis Fleming, the St. Patrick's right full, lunged in with a superbly timed tackle to deny Rovers dangerman Vinny Arkins and put the ball out over his own end line. When the kick from thecorner by John Mannion came across the St. Pat's penalty area, John Devine met it on the volley to drive the ball, to the net off John McDonnell's legs from thirty yards. St. Patrick's were stunned but, to their credit, they never became flustered and although it took them 28 minutes to have their first shot at goal they swung the game in their favour with two goals in a dramatic four minute spell. When central defender Damien Byrne tapped back a free kick to Dave Henderson in the 32nd minute, the goalkeeper launched a thundering clearance upfield. The ball found both Mick Moody and Mark

Ennis in what appeared clear offside positions inside the Rovers' half and as the Rovers defence stood rooted to the spot. Moody, having taken the ball under control, raced on, with Ennis alongside him; and brilliantly put the ball pas1 Byrne in the Rovers' goal. Four minutes later when Ennis took full advantage of Jody Byrne's generosity to put St. Pat's ahead with a linesman flagging, apparently for offside. Referee Michael Caulfield over-ruled his fellow official as the ball which had put the Rovers goalkeeper in trouble had been played back to him by his own teammate Wayne Cooney. The match clinching goal came from Mick Moody in the 63rd minute when St. Pat's were awarded a free and from Tony O'Connor's kick Pat Fenlon, brilliantly took the ball through the Rovers' 'wall' before laying it off to Moody. ST. PATRICKS ATHLETIC: Henderson; Fleming, McDonnell, Byrne, Kelch; O'Connor, Tracey, Moody; Osam, Kelly, Ennis. Sub: Fenlon for Kelly (56 minutes). SHAMROCK ROVERS: Byrne; Brazil, Murphy, Eccles, Cooney; Connell, Craig, Devine, Mannion; Arkins, Treacy. Subs: Kobb for Devine (65 mins), O'Connor for Devine (70 mins). REFEREE: M. Caulfield (Dublin).

@SBahnManc The other case of a Capocannoniere at the Stadio Friuli came more recently, with Antonio di Natale topping the scoring charts in both 2010 and 2011. The striker from Naples played 12 seasons with Udinese, and fired them to Champions League qualification in his first season in 2004/05. During his reign in Friuli, Di Natale lead the line alongside Vincenzo Iaquinta, Fabio Quagliarella and Alexis Sánchez, making Udinese an unlikely attacking power. After twice breaking his intentions of retirement, Di Natale left the club in 2006, and now manages Carrarese in Serie C. Oliver Bierhoff celebrates yet another goal for Udinese.

During their club careers in Udine, these 3 management, his playing career culminated in winning the 1995 Beach Soccer World Cup for Brazil, appropriate for the boy from the Copacabana.

renowned players never won anything. Indeed Le Zebrette’s most prominent title is an Italian Youth Championship. Nonetheless, their consistent participation at the top level of Italian football shows they are a powerful outfit, and we wish James buona fortuna at his new club.

That the scorer of both goals in a European Championship final played with as unglamorous a club as Udinese is surprising, however Oliver Bierhoff had earned his place in Die Mannschaft by scoring consistently for smaller clubs. Ineffective at Ürdingen, Hamburg and Mönchengladbach, he found form with Austria Salzburg, then Ascoli, before switching to Udinese in 1995. Top scorer in Serie A in 1998, his 27 goals put him ahead of Ronaldo, Roberto Baggio, and Gábriel Batistuta. After leading Udinese to third place and European qualification, a move to AC Milan followed. Bierhoff went on to become a serial endorser, appearing in advertisements for companies such as Danone, Nike, Deutsche Telecom and L’Oréal.

A tearful Antonio Di Natale bids farewell to his club of 12 years.

Club History Dermot Looney

1951-52: ENTRY TO THE LOI PART ONE: BUILD UP AND THE FIRST GAME St Pat’s elevation to the League of Ireland on their fourth attempt saw an inauspicious start; an ad in the Evening Herald on Tuesday July 31st detailing a trial of sorts for prospective new players. “Training now in progress in Richmond Park, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7.30. Junior players desiring to make the grade invited to attend ground tomorrow (Wednesday) or Thursday at 7.30oc or write Hon Sec W McCormack, 79 Kilworth Rd, North Crumlin.” The ad also noted that membership cards were now available by applying at the grounds. The Irish Independent reported on the squad-building with a week to go to the season opener under the headline “St Patrick’s Are Getting League Team Together.” “The majority of last year’s team are in training,” it noted, listing goalkeepers Kinahan and Dunne, backs Staunton, Crowley, Marshall, Coughlan; half-backs Byrne, O’Connor, Cummins, Mulville, Stokes and Deegan; and forwards Mountaine, Cassidy, Gibbons, Connolly and White. Several of these players had featured primarily for the B team the previous season. Newcomers training with the Saints were Johnny Coyle, formerly of Shamrock Rovers and Grimsby Town, who had guested

in the past for the Saints; Tommy Desay, the ex-Bohs Amateur international, Liam Galvin, from Shamrock Rovers, a former Pat’s player, and “promising youngsters” Troy, a junior interprovincial player from Merrion Rovers, and Harry Boland from Longford Town. A later edition of the Irish Press also reported that Eamon (Eddie) Hamilton, a Scottish inside-left formerly of Dundalk, who had just returned from Barnsley in England’s Division Two, would challenge for a place in the attack. The Press reported that the club would field three teams for the season ahead, in a major expansion of the club; the first team in the League of Ireland, the

second team in the LSL Division One, and the third team in the AUL Division One (Saturday), with the latter two teams playing out of Richmond Park and all three training in Inchicore. The club colours, it was reported, would continue to be red with white sleeves, with an alternate colour of a white shirt with red facings. The famous red and white was about to be launched on the League of Ireland stage for the first time. The Athletic’s debut as a League of Ireland club would take place in the Dublin City Cup. Despite its name, the competition featured all League of Ireland clubs. In the years previous, it had been a round-robin tournament, but with

the League’s expansion to 12 clubs and the resultant pressure on fixture lists, it was played from this season on as a knock-out competition. The St Patrick’s Athletic team to face Drumcondra was named as Jimmy Kinahan, Jimmy Staunton, Johnny Coyle, Dessie Byrne, Jimmy ‘Timber’ Cummins, Billy Mulville, Harry Boland, John ‘Barreller’ Cassidy, Shay Gibbons, Tommy ‘Longo’ White, Liam Galvin. Reserves were Tommy Desay and Connolly. The game kicked off at 3.30pm on Saturday, August 18th at Tolka Park. The preview in the Irish Times referred to the Saints as a “side who specialise in upsetting calculations.”

“At this stage it is, perhaps, opportune to wish St Patrick’s and Evergreen, the newcomers to the League of Ireland, the best of luck in their new surroundings, and to add the hope that their stay in senior ranks will be a long and successful one,” noted the Times football correspondent. “They Lost 4-1, But St Patrick’s Put Up Fine Show Against Drums” ran the headline on the extensive match report from Seumas Devlin in the following day’s Sunday Independent. “St Patrick’s Athletic will have cause to remember their debut in League of Ireland football,” he wrote. “Taking the game as a whole, they put up a very creditable performance. Individually, they were quite good, in fact their inside-left, White, was easily the best player on the field, but they lacked the cohesion of their opponents.” “The St Patrick’s defence was not at all steady. Staunton was too often out of position, and, indeed, the entire back line will have to improve considerably if they are to stand up to League of Ireland football.” Mulville, Galvin, Cassidy and Kinahan were also praised by the reporter, who noted the game was played before “a fair attendance.” Daly had opened the scoring for Drums after 10 minutes. Gibbons equalised with Pat’s first ever goal as a League

club, rising highest to head home after the goalkeeper failed to deal with a Galvin cross. Daly scored a second before the break, with Kelly and Kinsella scoring in the second half to secure a 4-1 win for Drumcondra. St Pat’s were “not disgraced,” reported Monday’s Irish Press, which also noted they had “little luck.” The Herald noted Pat’s strong efforts to get back on terms at the start of the second half following an early “period of aimless kicking.” “With some sharpening up the St Patrick’s forwards will be a menace to the best,” noted the Herald, somewhat presciently. “Cummins is a fine pivot and Mulville is as clever as ever.” The Irish Independent was less favourable to the Saints, noting only “individual flashes” from the newcomers, while the Irish Times’ correspondent was more critical again, noting Pat’s were “wellbeaten” under the headline “Newcomers Did Not Shine.” The early exit from the Dublin City Cup brought the next competition into sharp focus; the League of Ireland Shield, a precursor to the League campaign proper, which we will cover in Part Two of this season overview in the next edition.
