Good Evening Good evening and welcome to tonight's match, whether you are joining us in person or watching online. As always, a very warm welcome is extended to our visitors from Dundalk.

have a point to prove to us, given our fairly emphatic win in our last encounter.

So I'm under no illusions that we will have to be at our very best if we are to book our place in the Final.

If you're reading this as a prelude to Monday's scheduled league fixture, it will mean that a replay wasn't needed on foot of Friday's Cup semi-final, and I'd be very hopeful that will mean that St Pats have a late November trip to the Aviva to look forward to. The Cup Final is Irish football's big day out, and the FAI, to their credit, have worked very hard in recent years to make it an attractive and affordable finale to the season.

The scheduled League clash is also of great importance. Shamrock Rovers are almost certainly out of reach at the top of the table, but we've put ourselves in a great position to clinch the runners-up spot . The Dundalk game is one of 4 home games in our remaining 6. Our home form in recent months has been exceptional, undoubtedly due to the impact of having large crowds again, so we can be very confident of a strong finish to the season.

As everyone knows only too well, the FAI Cup became something of a Holy Grail for our club in the long 53 years that followed our 1961 success, and our history of Cup Final disappointments made victory all the sweeter when we finally triumphed in 2014 - probably the most memorable day I've known in a lifetime of following the club. It would be wonderful to return to the Aviva this year, for the first time since we lifted the trophy.

Dundalk, of course, will have other ideas and their recent track record in the competition should give them confidence. Since we last got to the Aviva, they've made the Final every single year, and, although their League position this year is well below their expectations, they have shown some excellent form in recent games. They will also feel they

As we move into the last month, we are very strongly placed to achieve that through the League, with the back-up chance of qualifying through winning the Cup. In my book, that amounts to huge progress in our rebuilding project and gives great hope for the coming season.

Oh My Word!

Dundalk faced Bohemians in their last league game before the FAI Cup semi-final against St Patrick’s. Their impressive performance against Bohs, just days after beating another Dublin rival, fuelled expectations of victory in the semi-final.

The outlook wasn't quite as rosy for the Saints, who went into the match smarting from a 1-0 defeat.

finished up with a 1-0 defeat against Drogheda United, but at least won the seventh-to-twelfth title. In a 32-game season, 16 draws told a tale.

It was April, 1993, but elements are echoed in the here and now.

It had been three years since Brian Kerr’s team won the league. Much of that side was subsequently cherry-picked by rivals with deeper pockets. Bohemians went for something of a copy-and-paste approach in the hope it would end their own famine. It nearly worked. Tony O'Connor, Maurice O'Driscoll and Pat Fenlon all made the move to Dalymount. So did Dave Henderson, after a stop-off at Shamrock Rovers.

Dundalk versus Bohs was dramatic before it started. The Gypsies' team bus was only on the road a short while before it broke down in Whitehall. When a back-up bus could not be arranged, they went route-one. Players and management would be driven to Dundalk in taxis and private cars. An unfortunate lead-in to the club's biggest game in 15 years. A draw would be enough to secure the title.

Supporters arrived at Oriel Park long before the Bohemians players. It was announced over the tannoy that there would be a delay. The game eventually kicked off 48 minutes after the scheduled time of 2pm.

Bohemians’ day went from bad to worse when Tom McNulty’s second-half goal denied them the title. The Scot had made a habit of scoring important goals and here he was again, doing his thing. Bohemians would be parachuted into a title play-off with Shelbourne and Cork City, with the Leesiders eventually coming out on top.

Dundalk had beaten two of those three to close out their league campaign. Had they amassed just one more point, they too would have been in the title play-off.

The ghastly top-six split had left St Patrick’s cut adrift in the badlands of seventh-to-twelfth. They

Not a space to be found. A housing estate eventually helped solve the problem.

The driver's seat was pulled forward and out we jumped, like skydivers exiting a plane.

On the approach to the ground, butterflies began to flutter. The curious eye was drawn to symbols of allegiance. Baseball caps bearing the crozier. Red-and-white scarves, some worn to be seen, others peeking out over a jacket collar. The

brave few ditched their coat and wore the jersey over a jumper. Then you had the hardy boys, who didn't even bother with a jumper.

St Patrick’s jerseys were not in plentiful supply. It didn't help that the club lacked an outlet to sell merchandise. They were available, though. You just had to be in the right place at the right time. A boxload of jerseys had been sold to supporters who made the journey to Sligo by train for the quarter-final.

Clanking through the turnstile, you felt the atmosphere against your face. The echo of what they used to call a bumper crowd.

This junior Saint had the away jersey. Blue, with red shoulders and a smart-looking Aircare logo. An unusual, almost psychedelic pattern ran through the material. Everything about it was magical. But there was no way it would be seen in Dundalk.

Even on mild match days, the instruction was to wrap up with layer upon layer. It was nonnegotiable. Items were individually laid out on the bed.

All I had to do was put them on.

On this Sunday, it was full Eskimo attire. The jersey was well hidden by a series of shirts,

Fireworks and toilet roll greeted the emergence of the teams from the tunnel. The shed housed the majority of the travelling hopefuls. Its low roof helped raise the decibel level.

It would be 19 years before the teams met in another FAI Cup semi-final at Oriel Park. The landscape had changed. St Patrick’s were convincing winners against a Dundalk team in grave danger of going down. They survived in the end, but only just.

Their response was to appoint Stephen Kenny, which was inspired.

Oh. When. The...

Osam went even closer on the hour mark, firing the ball against the post. For a second, we were sure it was going in.

Who’s Who at The Saint?

Like so many other things on match night, it takes considerable effort to compile the issue of The Saint you’re viewing. So who’s who?

RUAIRI KAVANAGH: EDITOR

KIERAN COUGHLAN

Works with the club, contributors and designers ato deliver each issue. Apart from that he specialises in getting randomers to come along to their first Pats game. This tactic has yielded a 100% win ratio to date.

When not found on the Camac, Kieran is to be found finding inventive ways to torture Saints fans with his fiendishly tricky questions.

JOE O’ROURKE: DESIGNER Part of the All Saints Show, having previously designed the club murals among other things Joe has spearheaded the redesign of The Saint and was a major reason for us being named Programme of the Year. Thanks Joe! PAT O’CALLAGHAN Long club serving historian and programme curator.

Pat has been involved with the club and the programme for decades. He’s also one of the friendly faces you encounter when entering the ground to buy your programme.

JIMMY EDWARDS Following on from his father's (of the same name) 30 years of writing for the programme, Jimmy Edwards (Junior) continues the Pensive Points tradition.

JOHN OWENS Statto supreme, we reckon he has shares in Microsoft Excel. An incredible range of knowledge, John was way too modest when he once described himself as just a ‘guy with a few spread sheets!’.

IAN TEMPLEMAN Our foreign correspondent. Writes, with considerable eloquence, from the UK with his observations on our league and particularly the Saints. Ever reliable, always has his copy in first.

RONAN O’FLAHERTY Journalist with a passion for Pats, Ronan comes from good Saints stock, as his surname might suggest. Ever the optimist Ronan can put a positive slant on the most dismal run of form. We know, we gave him plenty of opportunities last season!

STEPHEN BENNETT Journalist with the Herald and a lifelong Saints fan.

Inchicore born and bred, a lover of soccer history both home and abroad. He's not great at getting trains back from away matches, however.

DERMOT LOONEY Dermot is from Greenhills and has followed Pat's since he was a teenager in the 1990's. He is working on a St Pat's History project, researching and collecting information on the history of our club. You can check it out at @HistoryStPats on Twitter. Get in touch with him with any memories or memorabilia from the club's history.

SEÁN BRENNAN Seán is a full time languages teacher in Dublin a part time writer on football culture and cooking. He has been following St Pats since the early noughties and Serie A since the late nineties. A former resident of France, UK and Germany, he enjoys train journeys, radio, pasta and everything with the prefix ‘Euro-‘.

PAUL MAGUIRE Inchicore born & bred, Paul has been following the Saints since the late 80s. Favourite ever Pats player is Eddie Gormley. Used to host The All Saints Show and Pats match commentary until the FAI closed it down so now writes about the opposition rather than talking about them. Has around 50 Pats jerseys but can only fit into 10 of them. Plays guitar and sings, likes trains.

SEAN CREEDON A Kerryman living in Dublin... a long time. He has been attending League of Ireland and Republic of Ireland home games for over 50 years. Interested in all sports, but mainly GAA, Soccer and Rugby. A member of the Soccer Writers’Association. Writes on LOI and international matters.

St Patrick's Athletic gave their prospects of qualifying for the UEFA Cup a big boost with this eircom League of Ireland Premier Division win at Cork City.

Pat's consolidated second place in the table, while Cork drop to fourth position following this home defeat at Turner's Cross.

The only goal of a lively game came after 20 minutes when Mark Quigley crossed from the right wing for Gary O'Neill to chest the ball home at the far post.

Cork pressed for an equaliser but the visiting defence and goalkeeper Brendan Clarke stood firm.

St Patrick's, who had hammered Shamrock Rovers 5-0 at Inchicore on Friday night, continued with Clarke in goal for the injured Barry Ryan.

Cork, who relinquished their 12match unbeaten run at champions Drogheda United at the weekend made one change, with John O'Flynn starting in attack in place of Leon McSweeney who moved

to the substitutes' bench.

DUNDALK 0 ST PATRICK'S ATH 3 THE St Patrick's Athletic celebrations combined the familiar emotions of euphoria and relief on the full-time whistle at Oriel Park.

There was probably a bit of trepidation, too. The FAI Cup teases them with afternoons like this. Semi-final success brings the Inchicore club within 90 minutes of ending their storied

51-year famine. They know from bitter experience that the big day can bring heartbreak. Hope is dangerous.

Regardless of who wins the replay in the other semi-final, the Saints will enter the final as favourites.

A 14-game unbeaten run means that a league and cup double is still possible, but that is an unlikely scenario, dependent on victory in Sligo on Saturday and a collapse from the Bit O'Red in their final two matches.

“It's Sligo's to win or lose, but if we get a result up there we will keep it alive for the last couple of games,” said Buckley. To do that, Saints will have to raise their performance a couple of levels.

If Pat's officials were feeling the nerves beforehand, the players endeavoured to make them relax with a purposeful start.

They forged into a 21st-minute lead, a goal which arose from a sloppy foul by Dundalk leftback Eoghan Osborne.

A New Sheriff in Town? A Short History of Champions League Debutants Sheriff Tiraspol’s recent victory over Real Madrid astounded the footballing public. That a squad with a market value of ‘only’ €12 million could turn over a club with 63 times their value is a feat which is challenging to express in enough superlatives.

Regrettably, the narrative on social media which followed was more about mocking Real Madrid than recognising this once in a lifetime victory for a club so comparatively small.

Following last season’s European exit to Dundalk, knocking out Red Star in the playoffs was a shock victory, then Dinamo Zagreb even more so. The club who perennially win their domestic league made it to the Champions League for the first time in 19 attempts, even beating last 16 regulars Shakhtar Donetsk in their opening fixture, before silencing the Bernabéu.

In 2008, Anorthosis Famagusta became the first team from Cyprus to qualify for the UCL; credible draws against Werder Bremen and Inter Milan were not enough for them to progress any further.

Other debuts not ending in disgrace include Ferencvaros in 1995 with 5 points, HJK Helsinki in 1998 also managed 5, Maribor Losko in 1999 with 4, BATE Borisov’s 3 draws in 2008, and Astana’s 4 points from 2015.

Less fancied clubs from bigger leagues have also made some significant first impressions; Leicester City reaching the quarter finals in 2016/17, as well as Atalanta doing the same three years later, while in 2005/06 a Villarreal side led by Diego Forlán and Juan Roman Riquelme defeated Rangers and Inter before narrowly falling to Arsenal in the semi finals.

Lastly, the delight of seeing Keith Gillespie tormenting Barcelona’s defence is a memory which will not be easily erased; his two assists and Tino Asprilla’s hat trick giving Newcastle United a shock 3-2 win in their first ever Champions League campaign.

Surprisingly, Sheriff Tiraspol already having six points is closer to the norm for Champions League debutants.

Particularly today with the extensive barriers facing teams from lesser resourced leagues to qualify for the group stages, it can be expected that the 6 teams who do not qualify automatically will be there on

merit, having defeated the Slavia Pragues, FC Basels and Malmös of this world.

Sheriff’s shock win caught a lot of attention and temporarily reduced my own fatigue of the somewhat predictable Champions League group stages (And last 16, and sometimes quarter finals). I would love to say that these upsets will become frequent occurrences, however that remains unlikely.

Alas while 7 and 8 goal defeats are not regularly disgracing the competition’s name, Sheriff are still a David, surrounded by Goliaths.

Historic win at Goodison Park in 1949 Seán Creedon

For many years it was a source of annoyance for Irish supporters that several record books stated that Hungary’s 63 win over England at Wembley in November 1953 was England’s first home defeat to a ‘foreign nation.’

Thankfully those records have now been amended as Irish fans were quick to point out that The Republic of Ireland was the first ‘foreign country’ to beat England at home, winning 2-0 at Goodison Park on September 21, 1949.

Before the game Daily Express reporter Henry Rose wrote: ‘‘Anybody who thinks the Irish have any chance against England at Goodison Park should make an appointment with a Harley Street psychiatrist.’’ Ireland, who had trained under Billy Lord at Haig Avenue, Southport, were available at odds of ten to one before the game.

England coach Walter Winterbottom used this friendly 72 years ago to ‘blood’ some new players for the British Championship which would also serve as a World Cup qualification group. He gave first caps to Middlesbrough’s Jess Pye and

Portsmouth’s Peter Harris.

It was Pye who had the first scoring chance. Tom Finney and Wilf Mannion began the game with some lovely intricate moves which resulted in Mannion crossing the ball for Pye, but his header was wide. For the first half hour England dominated, but then on 33 minutes they conceded a penalty.

Tommy O’Connor put Peter Desmond clear. He was taken down by Mozley and Con Martin stepped up to take the spot kick. England goalkeeper Bert Williams guessed correctly and got his hands to the ball, but such was the power of Martin’s kick that the ball spun out of his hands into the net.

The goal boosted the visitors’ confidence and Davy Walsh had two chances to score before half-time.

Naturally England went all out for an equaliser early in the second half and Billy Wright brought a great save from Tommy Godwin early on. The Shamrock Rovers ‘keeper also denied Harris, while Tommy Aherne prevented Pye from equalising when he cleared the ball off the line. Harris hit the cross bar with a free-kick and

Godwin saved from Morris and Con Martin made two crucial clearances.

England continued to dominate and Ireland could only manage a few breakaways. The second goal came on 85 minutes when an England attack broke down.

The ball broke to winger O’Connor, who put Peter Farrell clear. The Dubliner, who was playing for Everton at that time, chipped the ball over England keeper Williams to secure an historic Irish win.

Afterwards the British media were generous in their praise of the Irish performance. Daily Telegraph reporter Frank Coles

wrote: ‘‘International football history was made at Goodison Park last night. Eire in their first appearance in this country, won fame as the first ever foreign team to make a successful invasion of England. By keeping the ball close the England forwards played into the hands of John Carey, Eire’s great right back and captain, for whom this result was a crowning glory.’’

Carey was also our manager, but the team was selected by a five-man committee.

Former England player Charles Buchan, who became a journalist after retirement, reported on the game for the News Chronicle. He wrote: ‘‘Eleven gallant men from Eire humbled England’s soccer pride unmistakably. The Irish backs played wide out on the flanks, while the rest of the defence massed in the penalty area. England’s forwards had no answer to the Irish plan.’’

Incidentally an All-Ireland team had beaten England at Middlesbrough in 1914 when Wexford-born Billy Lacey scored twice in a 3-0 win. But that was in an era before the formation of the FAI in 1921.

A View from Afar Ian Templeman

There are many and varied podcasts that give good coverage, insight and interviews on this league, and it’s difficult to keep up with them all, although I do my best because there is always some good stuff in there.

One of my favourites is LOI Central, hosted by Johnny Ward and Daniel McDonnell, whose affiliation and support for the league always shines through in their discussions. Therefore I was especially interested a couple of weeks ago when they announced that the guest on the show was Declan McBennett, the Head of Sport at RTE, who it transpired had actually volunteered to appear on the podcast to discuss the station's coverage of the league.

In the promo for the podcast, Daniel McDonnell made clear that McBennett “wanted to speak directly to a LOI audience and was offered to us rather than the other way around”, so clearly there were a number of points he wanted to get across.

If you haven’t heard the broadcast yet, it is well worth taking the time out to do so. For me, it turned out to be a fascinating listen, and was a lengthy discussion that covered many issues.

However, for those of us who are fans of the league, there were several sobering points to ponder, and not all of them were very palatable either.

In the opening stages of the broadcast, McBennett observed that probably the greatest passion for expressing any views on RTE Sport output came from what he called the “LOI brigade”, but the point that was made several times in different ways was that quite simply, the number of people that comprise that collective group isn’t really big enough to justify the sort of blanket coverage we’d all like to see from the state broadcaster.

Some viewing figures were quoted, and it is pretty obvious that there is an appetite for watching European games involving Irish clubs, as the games that have been shown recently delivered figures that stand up well. But when it comes to a domestic game occupying a prime time Friday evening slot, there needs to be an improvement in viewing figures to give more bargaining power for greater exposure.

But from a totally selfish point of view, the comments I found most alarming – but also surprising and disappointing – were made about Watch LOI, which as we know was set up in the middle of the pandemic involving discussions between all the interested parties. Regular readers of this page over the past year or so will know that being given the opportunity to watch every Premier Division game live was like Christmas come early for me, given how difficult it has been down the years to see live action, and there can’t have been many more enthusiastic overseas subscribers than me.

Apparently though, the number of subscriptions to Watch LOI was disappointing and it is rather difficult to argue with Declan McBennett’s observation during the discussion that the viewing figures for live streaming should be at their highest when fans can’t go to games. It’s a more than valid point, and I have to say I find it very disappointing that during a period of time when attendance at games just wasn’t possible, that there wasn’t a large take up. McBennett said that during the negotiations, Niall Quinn said to him that the LOI family and diaspora would back the coverage, and if I had

Ronan O’Flaherty @iantemplemanloi been there myself I’d have said the same, but unfortunately the expectation back then and the subsequent reality are different.

When Watch LOI came on stream, I was obviously most interested in the Pats games, but with the kick off times being staggered like they were, I watched pretty much every game that was shown last season. If one happened to clash with me doing something else, I usually watched it on catch up.

However, Declan McBennett’s observation is that fans of SSE Airtricity League Premier Division clubs don’t watch other club’s games, and as Daniel McDonnell later observed in his weekly email newsletter “The Halfway Line”, “streaming has served the hardcore well, but the anecdotal evidence is that floating fans aren't paying for it”.

One small downside of live streaming this season is that with most Premier Division fixtures being played at the same time now, as opposed to having the staggered kick off times previously operated, it’s not so easy to catch up when you have a backlog of action to watch, and that is where a highlights programme would be useful – and that is another point that was covered in the discussion.

Here, McBennett also reiterated a point that has been made in the past, namely that live games get better viewing figures than the various highlights packages, and

that the world has changed with regard to that type of programme. He commented that, aside of Match of the Day and the Sunday Game, highlights programmes don’t hold the appeal they once did. I can appreciate that LOI highlights may not hit the heights with regard to RTE viewing figures, but I can’t accept there is a case for having none at all available anywhere. All the games are covered by cameras, so even if it ends up being a YouTube package put together by enthusiastic volunteers, there must surely be a way of getting something arranged and available to watch.

It does make you wonder what the future holds with regard to broadcasting live Premier Division action, both on RTE and via other streaming channels, and with ongoing arrangements seemingly in doubt, it makes it all the more galling to see the announcement last weekend that the BBC have agreed a new five-year partnership with the Irish League.

The agreement will see 38 Danske Bank Premiership matches and additional Irish Cup games broadcast live on either TV or online, and of those league ties, eight will be shown on BBC Two NI, with the remaining 30 broadcast on the BBC iPlayer. On top of that, the deal also includes BBC Sport NI continuing to broadcast the Irish Cup Final live, while there will also be a tie live

streamed on the BBC iPlayer from every round of the competition.

If the Irish League can broker this sort of deal, then it surely can’t be beyond the realms of possibility for something similar to be arranged for the SSE Airtricity League, both for domestic and overseas subscribers.

Yes, I do have a vested interest in this, as the last 18 months has been fantastic for me as a long distance supporter, being able to watch every Pats game and plenty of others besides, and from a purely selfish point of view, I really hope that the level of coverage I have become used to doesn’t suddenly disappear.

Declan McBennett did confirm that RTE would continue to do its best to cover the league within their budgetary restrictions, so the challenge now is to find other broadcasting avenues for complementing that.

It surely can’t be argued that coverage of games in this league, whether live on RTE, live streaming on subscription channels and via highlights packages is essential to help promote the league going forward – so it’s in everyone’s interests to make sure that a sensible and workable – and cost effective - arrangement to suit all parties must be thrashed out soon.

A Short History of Pat’s and Dundalk: Railways, White Balls and the Goal That Wasn’t Although some of the details have been lost to the mists of time, the stories of St Pat’s encounters with Dundalk are full of intrigue and no little drama. Football connections between Inchicore and Dundalk, two railway towns, date back to the early days of the game in Ireland.

Indeed, the predecessors of the two clubs meeting tonight played a Leinster Junior Cup final in 1903; the original St Patrick’s club of Inchicore (formed in 1898) beat Dundalk Rovers 1-0.

in their first meeting at Bluebell, but the sides wouldn’t meet again until the Saints were promoted to the LSL Division I in 1946/47, when Pat’s had two straightforward wins against the Lilywhite reserves. Among the keen spectators at the games were Dundalk’s own scouts, who signed two Saints players at the end of the season – future Irish international Jimmy Hartnett, and inside-left Dessie Byrne, who would later return to the Saints in the League of Ireland era.

The two modern clubs both sprung from similar origins. The Lilywhites began life as the works team of the Great Northern Railway company and were even nicknamed The Railwaymen in their early days. They originally carried the name Dundalk GNR until 1930, with their 19th century roots in rugby before the turn to association football in 1903. Meanwhile, much of Inchicore’s football traditions were tied to the works of the Great Southern and Western Railway, which became the GSR in the 1920’s. St Patrick’s Athletic were formed in 1929/1930 by young staff from the works after GSR’s refusal to take them as an extra team.

The all-conquering Pat’s LSL side of the late 1940’s and early 1950’s defeated Dundalk B on every occasion bar one, but it wasn’t until December 1950 when the two first teams met for the first time, in the Leinster Senior Cup final at Dalymount Park. Pat’s by this stage were well on the way to their fourth LSL title in a row and were just months away from their accession to the League of Ireland.

St Patrick’s Athletic’s earliest encounters with Dundalk came with the Louthmen’s B team, starting in Division II of the Leinster Senior League in the 1938/39 season. It was the Saints’ first year in the LSL and the final one of their tenancy at Bluebell before the move to Richmond Park in 1939. Pat’s beat Dundalk B 6-1

In the final the ball itself became a source of history. With fifteen minutes to go, and St Pat’s leading 1-0 through a Staunton header, the traditional brown ball was changed to a white one due to fading light. It was the first time in Irish football history that a white ball had been used. Dundalk went on to score two goals, the second in the final minute, to win their first ever Leinster Senior Cup on a 2-1 scoreline.

“The Leinster Leaguers should have had more than one goal to their credit at the interval on their chances in the opening 20 minutes,” reported the Evening Herald under the headline “White Ball Changed Dundalk’s Luck.” WPM, writing

in the Irish Independent, was full of praise for Dundalk keeper Durkan who pulled off several key saves in the opening half.

The next time the sides met was as League of Ireland peers, with Dundalk coming out on top by 3-0 in a LOI Shield match in Oriel Park in September 1951. Pat’s would win their first League encounter on a 5-2 scoreline at Milltown in December of that year, but the meeting of the

In front of a good-sized crowd at Oriel Park (gate £192), Pat’s took a 2-0 lead through a Shay Gibbons brace. Dundalk brought the game back to 2-2 but Johnny Breen headed what seemed a clear goal for the Saints to retake the lead.

Referee Mr Evans, from Liverpool, had been involved in a collision with Dundalk’s Jackie McCourt just moments before and was still regaining his composure. He didn’t consult with the Irish linesman and made the decision not to award the goal, and for play to continue. An incensed Pat’s team then conceded another, with Dundalk running out 3-2 winners.

Tensions boiled over after the final whistle. Pat’s keeper Kinahan attacked Fearon of Dundalk. Gardaí drew batons on the crowd and referee Evans collapsed in the melee.

The controversy didn’t end

A Short History of Pat’s and Dundalk: Railways, White Balls and the Goal That Wasn’t there. Local amateur photographer Malachy Bellew had captured the scene, showing the ball well over the line, and it was published in the following Thursday’s Irish Independent.

The upshot of it all? Dundalk went on to win the Cup. Pat’s keeper Kinahan received a lengthy ban for the fracas. And Malachy Bellew, the man with the camera on the scene, received a lifetime ban from Oriel Park for daring to show the goal that never was.

The following seasons saw the Saints regain the upper hand, going the next 20 games unbeaten against the Louthmen.

The most spectacular result of all came in Pat’s second League-winning campaign in 1954/55. On January 16th 1955, Pat’s hit double digits for the first, and so far only, time in competitive football with a 10-3 win on a frost-covered pitch at Chapelizod Stadium.

“Dundalk were outclassed everywhere,” wrote the reporter in the following day’s Irish Press, noting the clever play of Shay Gibbons, who scored two, alongside a hat-trick from Ginger O’Rourke, braces from Johnny Cassidy and Longo White, and an og from Dundalk’s McQuillan.

Future years would see more famous encounters between the two sides. Notable FAI Cup semi-final replay wins for Dundalk came in 1977 and 1988. Remarkably, in the case of the latter, it was followed in the very next game with a clash between the two sides for the title, with Paddy Dillon’s “Hand of God” moment and a 1-1 draw seeing Dundalk pip Pat’s to the championship. Eight years later, almost to the day, saw the Saints serve a cold Soupy revenge, with Paul Campbell’s late free-kick in Oriel Park winning the 1995/96 title for Brian Kerr’s men.
