Good Evening Good evening and welcome to tonight's big game, whether you are here in person or watching on TV. We extend a particularly warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Shamrock Rovers.

Unless my memory is playing tricks with me, it is almost two years since Richmond Park last hosted a Dublin derby in front of a large crowd - October 2019, to be precise, when our visitors were Bohemians. It had all the necessary ingredients, with European qualification on the line, passionate supporters, a red card for our visitors, their goal under siege and a desperate rearguard action which ultimately was just about good enough to secure them the point they needed in a scoreless draw. I doubt if anyone in the crowd that night had even heard of Wuhan, and the concept of a global pandemic would have been regarded as the stuff of science fiction rather than a reality that would soon wreak havoc on society and the economy - and would mean a very long wait for our next crowd-filled derby.

But here we are, and how good it is to be able to host such an occasion again.

Fittingly, it brings together the league's top two sides. Shamrock Rovers are the defending champions and at this stage are very short-odds favourites to retain their title. They've shown an ability to pick up points in the dying moments of games which is often the hallmark of champions, and indeed they've pulled that off in two of our three encounters this

season. We have been the surprise package of the season - most pundits saw us battling it out in mid-table with the hope of squeaking into the European qualification slots as we continued the rebuilding of our squad. In fact we've been closer to the coattails of the champions than anyone else for a long time now and, with just nine games remaining, are very well placed for a top three finish. Tonight may tell if we still have slightly better prospects than that.

I think that all our supporters are well aware that this season was always going to be about progress. It takes time to build a team, to integrate our very bright young prospects with the experience that has been added to the squad. At times this season we have been outstanding, while on other occasions we haven't quite delivered on potential. On balance, however, and irrespective of tonight's result, we are having a good season and there's a lot to look forward to.

Most importantly, as the country finally moves away from COVID restrictions, we can look forward to packing out Richmond Park again to give our team the support it deserves. Joni Mitchell once pointed out that you don't know what you've got till it's gone. We've certainly learned that over the last 18 months.

Oh My Word!

Julian Nagelsmann stands apart as a beacon for every young manager. His career trajectory has been upward all the way.

For the longest time, iconic imagery of dugout personalities seldom featured young men.

Managers who helped define eras were larger-than-life, greying figures. Their disposition was stern, underlined by a strict disciplinary code.

There is a broader spread of ages now. The job title has evolved, too, with the rise of the head coach.

So determined were Bayern Munich to secure the services of Nagelsmann that they coughed up a world-record transfer fee for a head coach.

His playing career ended when he was just 20, after sustaining a repeat knee injury.

Nagelsmann shifted his focus toward coaching and

found a home at Hoffenheim. He rose up the ranks steadily, earring a "Mini Mourinho" moniker along the way.

In 2016, Hoffenheim made him the youngest head coach (or manager) in Bundesliga history.

He was 28. All expectations were exceeded when Hoffenheim qualified for the Champions League for the first time in its history. That changed everything for Nagelsmann.

An offer came in from RB Leipzig that was too good to turn down. It was a bigger stage with greater possibilities. He continued to impress at Leipzig. In the 4-0 dismantling of Tottenham, he became the youngest coach to win a Champions League tie.

Leipzig went all the way to the 2020 Champions League semifinal – the youngest head coach to get that far, too.

Bayern Munich proved too hard a nut to crack, as Nagelsmann's team finished runners-up in the Bundesliga. If you can't beat them, join them, which is exactly what he did after a fee of €25million was agreed between the clubs.

It is early days in his Bayern journey. Some indifferent performances in pre-season led to some unnecessary criticism. But 13

points from the first five league games – with 20 goals scored – suggests the team is motoring.

This evening, here at Richmond Park, two of the country's youngest and brightest go headto-head.

The Stephens – O'Donnell and Bradley – have won many admirers for their progressive approach to match strategy. They also happen to know each other well from their shared time at Arsenal in the early 2000s.

Last season, Bradley was 35 when he guided Shamrock Rovers to the league title. It was a fine achievement that perhaps hasn't received due recognition because of the shortened nature of the 2020 campaign.

Everyone – fans, players, managers – shared in a sense of relief when it was finally confirmed that the season would resume last year. The 147-day gap between game-day four and five says it all. In a time of mindmelting restrictions, Shamrock Rovers were convincing champions.

They are out in front again this season, six points clear with one game in hand. St Patrick's fans aren't fooling themselves. Clearly, at this relatively late stage, it's an

outside shot. Improbable but not impossible.

After arriving late into the 2019 season and then keeping the ship steady through last year's turbulence, this is Stephen O'Donnell's first clear run at the job. The 35-year-old is exceeding expectations. Being in a position to call on the vast experience of Alan Mathews has, no doubt, been a big benefit too.

There is an identity to this St Patrick’s team that bears some hallmarks of the Dundalk team O'Donnell captained to four league titles. Fitness levels are impressive and when they hit their stride, the pace is hard for opponents to keep up with.

St Patrick's have bounced back from most setbacks this season and did so again last Friday. The 3-0 win over Wexford was the perfect pick-me-up after a 2-0 reversal in Sligo seven nights earlier. It also means the dream of Lansdowne Road on Cup final day stays alive.

It's not just in the dugout that the age profile is evolving. Nineteenyear-old Darragh Burns again showed his importance with two goals against Wexford. At the other end, 20-year-old Vitezslav Jaros minded the house with typical authority. Ben McCormack

Wexford manager Ian Ryan (34) has a difficult task on his hands.

The team has struggled in the First Division this season.

Reaching the quarter-finals of the FAI Cup was an unexpected bonus that they hope will act as a springboard for positive results before the season ends.

Look around the grounds this weekend and there are more fresh faces patrolling the sidelines. Ruaidhrí Higgins (36) sends Derry City into battle against Longford Town. Good things are expected of Higgins in his first job as a manager.

Tim Clancy was a brave appointment by the Drogheda United board ahead of the 2018 season, when he was just 33. They have been rewarded with a return to the Premier Division and are currently well placed to challenge for a top-half finish.

Youth is also given its head in the First Division, where runaway leaders Shelbourne have reaped the benefits of standing by 34year-old Ian Morris, now in his third season at the helm. At St Colman's Park, 36-year-old Darren Murphy has been appointed permanent first team head coach after impressing on an interim basis. It's a hard job with limited resources. Fair judgment of Murphy will come next season, or perhaps even later.

The new breed are calm and considered, with a human approach to players. They are opening the door for the next generation to walk through.

DERMOT LOONEY Dermot is from Greenhills and has followed Pat's since he was a teenager in the 1990's. He is working on a St Pat's History project, researching and collecting information on the history of our club. You can check it out at @HistoryStPats on Twitter. SEÁN BRENNAN Seán is a full time languages teacher in Dublin a part time writer on football culture and cooking. He has been following St Pats since the early noughties and Serie A since the late nineties. A former resident of France, UK and Germany, he enjoys train journeys, radio, pasta and everything with the prefix ‘Euro-‘.

PAUL MAGUIRE Inchicore born & bred, Paul has been following the Saints since the late 80s. Favourite ever Pats player is Eddie Gormley. Used to host The All Saints Show and Pats match commentary until the FAI closed it down so now writes about the opposition rather than talking about them. Has around 50 Pats jerseys but can only fit into 10 of them. Plays guitar and sings, likes trains.

SEAN CREEDON A Kerryman living in Dublin... a long time. He has been attending League of Ireland and Republic of Ireland home games for over 50 years. Interested in all sports, but mainly GAA, Soccer and Rugby. A member of the Soccer Writers’Association. Writes on LOI and international matters.

The Saint caught up with midfielder Robbie Benson on the season so far, his time at the club so far and tonight’s game amongst other things.

First and foremost, what is the atmosphere in the group like at the minute as we approach the business end of the season with a cup semi-final in the mix?

The atmosphere is great, we’re well in the mix in the league going into the last series of games now, obviously a big game on Friday and we’ve taken care of business in the cup to get to a semi-final.

It’s an exciting time, sometimes these final weeks of the season can peter out when there is nothing really on the line. It was a target of ours at the start of the year to have a cup run and do well in the league, so everyone is in good form at the minute.

You’re at the club almost two full seasons now, what major improvements can you see in the club throughout that time?

I suppose when I came to the club originally it was on the back of a couple of poor to mediocre seasons in terms of where they would like to be and historically where they have been. I bought into what Stephen and Alan were pitching to me and it has been a really enjoyable period for me in terms of what I’m getting out of my time here and getting educated from the coaching staff as well being part of a group that

is growing week on week. There is still a lot to improve with the team, even if we do go on to have a successful season, we’re not at the top of the mountain and I’m sure next year we’ll be looking to improve and get stronger.

Hopefully in the last few weeks of this season we can show that we’re going to be a real force next year.

One noticeable feature of this squad is the ability for most players to cover several positions, which we have seen throughout the season. Is that versatility something that has been forced upon us due to injury/suspension or is this something expected of each player?

I think there was a necessity because the squad was small but credit to the staff for their recruitment of versatile players.

Sam Bone for example has played in a number of positions as has Matty Smith all across the front three, that’s just to name a few and even I played up front at one stage this season. I think the way that we’re being fed information from the coaching team is that we all need to know about each other’s role. I need to know Bermo’s role, Ronan Coughlan’s role, winger’s role etc. so if you’re required to play in that position that you know

what’s expected for that role. It’s not ideal but it means if we have injuries or suspensions players know the role even if it doesn’t come as natural to them.

This season has also seen several young players make the step up to senior level like Darragh, Ben and James to name a few that we have seen on the pitch every week and probably others training with the first team also. How important is that for the development of the club but also for the balance of the squad?

Yeah, some of the lads you’ve mentioned there like Darragh for example he’s been brilliant in terms of his contribution of goals and assists, if you were to look around the league, I think he has something like 7 or 8 assists and 4 or 5 goals which is right up there in the league given the minutes he has played. I am a big fan of Ben as well and he is very mature in terms of his football development, he picks up great positions and then James has deputised very well when he’s come in. It keeps the group fresh and it’s great to see the young lads come in and start their football journey, the sky is the limit for three of them and many more beyond.

You’ve experienced seasons before where silverware and European spots are up for grabs. Although you are currently injured, will this be an important role for you within the in the run-in?

It’s important to be around the squad, even when you’re injured. You’re going to get injuries from time to time and me and John are injured at the moment, so we have to show how to conduct your business when you are injured. Its important to set an example for the younger lads, if they did pick up an injury etc. they can’t say well John or Robbie weren’t in the gym or didn’t travel with the squad. It’s a great group and even though myself and John haven’t played in a while we haven’t really been missed, the form has been quite good. Ben coming in getting POTM just shows the strength we have in the squad.

We’ve had an exemplary record at home since the return of fans and with a potential 2,500 on Friday, how big of a role have the fans played so far and will they play on Friday?

It’s been brilliant, even the first few games when there were limited numbers there it gave us a great lift and its great that we’ve managed to win. The biggest thing for us is that this team hasn’t had the connection with the fans until now. There has been a

good connection built now and the crowd is getting behind us in the games. I’ve played in teams where the crowd can get on your back but that hasn’t been happening.

Red Star Belgrade and a Journey Through Yugoslavia St Patrick’s Under 19s drawing Serbian giants Red Star Belgrade in the UEFA Youth League is an exciting prospect, and one which evokes a lifetime of memories for the writer.

My first two words in SerboCroat were ‘Crvena’ (Red) and ‘Zvedza’ (Star). There’s something fascinating about the cluster of consonants in Slavic languages, and in terms of football and beyond, that region has long been close to my affections.

In terms of football, it began in autumn 1998, as Ireland started their qualification campaign for Euro 2000.

Along with Malta, we landed in a group of recently formed countries: Croatia, Macedonia and FR Yugoslavia (later split into Serbia and Montenegro).

That qualification campaign involved trips to exotic Eastern capitals, and listening to George Hamilton’s well researched pronunciation of local surnames, invariably all ending in ‘ić’. FR Yugoslavia were littered with top Serie A players, while Croatia had just returned from a bronze medal winning performance at France ’98. Late goals conceded in Skopje and Zagreb, as well as a 1-0 defeat in Belgrade resulted in Ireland finishing second and facing the play-offs, with former Real

Madrid players Davor Šuker and Pedrag Mijatović amongst the scorers.

On a club level, Red Star are the most successful team from the Balkans, whose zenith arrived with their 1991 European Cup victory over Marseille. Defeating Grashopper Zürich, Glasgow Rangers, Dynamo Dresden and Bayern Munich en route to the final, Red Star prevailed on penalties in a drab defensive game, with Darko Pančev converting the winning kick. Pančev hails from Macedonia, and in the final played alongside the Montenegran Dejan Savičević, the Croat Robert Prosinečki, the Bosniak Refik Šabanadžović, amongst a Serb backbone; the unified team of southern slavs giving one last hurrah to the Yugoslav dream, in the country’s greatest ever footballing achievement.

In addition to sporting coverage, my curiosity about Yugoslavia was augmented by early TV memories of seeing caged humans, unhealthily thin during the Bosnian war. U2’s ‘Miss Sarajevo’ was playing on the radio, and my impression was of a tragic, destroyed land. Srebrenica was more known to me than Dubrovnik. Some historians claim that the only thing which could have held the fragile Yugoslavia state together was a World Cup victory. Sadly, at Italia 90 a penalty defeat to Argentina in the quarter finals condemned that last beacon of hope.

The break up of the country, war, inflation, UN sanctions and NATO bombs over Belgrade followed, decimating any sporting capabilities of Red Star, and indeed any teams from the region. European giants came calling to offer Red Star’s top players career progression and a safe living environment; Yugoslav football has never recovered since the traumatic mid-90s.

As an adult visiting the pristine Adriatic beaches of Croatia and Montenegro, the view was very different from my childhood television screen. A booming tourism industry had reacquainted the region with the rest of the continent, and the restaurants of Croatian seaside resorts had menus listed in English, German, Italian, French and Russian. Slovenia’s economy outperformed all others, and Croatia joined them into full EU membership.

In terms of football, the region’s clubs have not had the

same success since splitting into smaller entities. Bar a few Champions League qualifications, predominantly from Dinamo Zagreb, former Yugoslav clubs are regularly outplayed, whilst top players experience a mass exodus to Bundesliga, Serie A and the Premier League. This season, both Red Star and Dinamo Zagreb were eliminated in Champions League Qualification by Moldovan side Sheriff Tiraspol. Furthermore, no Bosnian side has reached the group stage of even the Europa League, while Macedonia and Montenegro linger in places 45 and 53 respectively of UEFA’s 55 nation league rankings.

As a united nation, Yugoslavia were twice runners up in the European Championships, as well as winning the Olympics in 1960. Their basketball team also won three World Cups. Sport was seen as essential to public health and prioritised accordingly by the then government.

Red Star celebrate their 1991 European Cup triumph On a return visit, my curiosity increased about this sporting and cultural golden era. Tito’s socialismlite, combined with founding the Non-Alligned Movement and rapidly raising living standards, ensured a peaceful period from the post-war transition up until his death in 1980. Reading Ivo Andrić, listening to Denis i Denis and sampling infinite varieties of ajvar, I began to identify more and more with this troubled land of romantics, intellectuals and athletes, but simultaneously of mafiosi, war criminals and fervent nationalists.

On future visits, Titoist slogans inspired me from old fashioned propaganda posters and collectable enamel pin badges. The socialist identity reflects in football club names too. Beyond Crvena Zvedza, examples such as city rivals ‘Partizan’, ‘Radnički’ (Labourers) of Niš, ‘Željezničar’ (Railway workers) in Sarajevo, ‘Napredak’ (Progress) in Kruševac and the two Podgorica clubs ‘Mladost’ (Youth) and ‘Budućnost’ (Future) reflect the forward looking nation which has since been doomed to the past.

Life since the war has been difficult in the Balkans, as nations and sports clubs slowly recover and rebuild.

Europe has returned to the Former Yugoslavia with investment and tourism visits, while workers travel in the other direction, many still feeling the need to leave for a more prosperous future. Visible around Dublin today are stickers of ultras groups from Hajduk, Osijek, Rijeka and others, while Bureks are for sale (and highly recommended) at Ayla Foods on Capel Street.

The visiting Under 19s of Red Star Belgrade form the first post-conflict generation of the region; the first to not witness bombs and shells, the first to not see neighbours turn against each other, the first to not see the homeland they built become torn apart and impoverished. Hopefully, a bright future on and off the pitch can be seen in the Balkans.

1949/50: Three-In-A-Row Saints Come Up Just Short In The Cups With their League of Ireland ambitions yet again rebuffed, two-in-a-row champs St Pat’s prepared for the 1949/50 season in the Leinster Senior League with a “trial game” on August 28th at Richmond Park. New players were no doubt needed. Captain Billy Shields and forwards Podge Gregg and Bobby Rogers had departed, with inside-forward Paddy Noble soon to follow.

Many of the newcomers had significant League of Ireland experience. Among them were defenders Billy Mulville (formerly of Drumcondra and Bray Unknowns) and defender Patrick Kavanagh (exShamrock Rovers and Bohemians). These were joined by forwards Johnny Walsh (ex-Dundalk, Transport and Drums), Paddy Comerford, formerly of Shamrock Rovers, Transport and St James’ Gate, and the veteran Dicky McGrane, who had previously lined out for Transport, Drumcondra and Bohs. Soon to join them was centre-forward Andy Reville (ex-St James’ Gate).

With the season starting on September 4th, early wins came against St James’ Gate (2-0), Transport (2-1), Shelbourne B (5-1) and Jacobs (1-0).

Pat’s next took on an “exceptionally strong” Dundalk B team on November 20th in Oriel Park, with the home side featuring several first team players due to an idle week in the LOI Shield.

Nevertheless, the Athletic came away with a 4-2 win.

Another 5-1 victory followed at home to Grangegorman.

“St Patrick’s Run Up Seven Against Shelbourne” ran the headline in the Herald on December 5th, reporting on the previous day’s 7-0 hammering of Shels B at Richmond. By this stage of the season Pat’s were in second place in the table, just a point behind Drumcondra B, who had a game in hand.

A 2-1 away win against Grangegorman was followed up by a 3-0 win over St Paul’s at Richmond Park on December 27th.

The 1950’s got off to a mediocre start on New Year’s Day with a 0-0 draw away to Jacobs, but the subsequent League game on January 15th saw Pat’s with their scoring boots on, romping home to an 8-0 win over Dundalk B in Richmond Park. Eight goals were also scored on January 22nd at Bray against Transport B, but this time the result was 4-4.

Pat’s lost their 100% record to old Richmond rivals St Paul’s, now in a new home at Blanchardstown, on October 9th with a 2-1 defeat, but returned to winning ways the following Sunday with a 1-0 win over Bohemians B at Richmond.

Pat’s were at this stage leading the table, two points ahead of Drumcondra B, who they met at Tolka Park on January 29th. Cassidy scored two first-half goals to win the game 2-0 for the Saints.

October 23rd saw Pat’s take on Shamrock Rovers B at Milltown in a 1-1 draw. Another 1-1 draw against Botanic in Ballymun was followed up with an emphatic 5-1 win at home to UCD on November 13th.

League action resumed on February 26th with an emphatic 5-1 win over Botanic in Richmond Park. By early March, Pat’s retained top spot in the League, a comfortable three points ahead of closest rivals Drumcondra with two games in hand.

Cork Hibernians, would prove a worthy foe for the Saints this season.

The first game was played at Turner’s Cross on February 12th and ended in a 1-1 draw. “The mud on the pitch was so deep and sticky that attempts at good football were futile,” noted the Herald match report.

Cup commitments meant just two games between late February and early May; wins against Bohs B (5-2) and Drums B (3-1). With the season drawing to a close, the Saints spluttered to get over the line. They drew 3-3 away to UCD at Belfield on May 6th. “St Patrick’s Athletic are high enough up in the table with enough matches in hand to enable them to retain the title,” the Herald noted, “but they will make the success very difficult if they do not improve on recent form and results.” A 1-1 draw followed on May 9th at home to St James’ Gate.

A return to form came on May 21st at home to Longford Town in what seems to have been the final game of the Saints’ season, with a

4-0 win. Pat’s had indeed retained the championship, winning their third LSL title in a row with 43 points from 26 games, with 18 wins, 7 draws and 1 defeat, well clear of the chasing pack on 38 points.

In the run-up to the replay on March 5th the Herald noted that AOH were holders of the Munster Shield, winners of the Qualifying Cup, and were unbeaten to date in the Munster Senior League.

The Irish Times, in some rare coverage outside the League of Ireland, picked this game as

Pat’s faced Jacobs in the final on May 24th at Dalymount Park with a weakened lineup. McCreevy started in goal in place of Kinahan, with Reddick and Balfe also starting. Jacobs had been one of the founder members of the LOI and had played in the top flight from 1921-1932, later rejoining the Leinster Senior League.

The Saints’ hopes for a third Intermediate Cup in succession were dashed on a 2-0 scoreline.

Yet another shock was on the cards. Pat’s, forced to move from Richmond Park, opted to play the game at Milltown on February 19th. The gate was around £445 with the Herald noting that Pat’s supporters made up the majority of those in attendance. A rare programme was produced for the game.

second half. With two minutes left, Collins scored off a Staines free kick to secure yet another famous victory for the Athletic.

The Irish Press was effusive in praise for the Saints.

“In no uncertain manner they completely outclassed last year’s finalists. None could deny the merit of their win.” Meanwhile, MVC, writing in the Irish Independent under the headline “St Patrick’s Gave Shels A Lesson” stated that to describe the win as a giant-killing “would be to flatter the losers more than somewhat.”

Round Two saw the Saints drawn away to AOH of Cork on March 12th. A special train was organised

That same team stood in the way of St Patrick’s Athletic and an unlikely FAI Cup Final. The League of Ireland leaders, and eventual winners for the season, Cork Athletic had been formed in 1948 to take the place of Cork United, who dropped out of the LOI mid-season. They would last until just 1957, winning two LOI titles and two FAI Cups in their short existence, before being replaced by AOH/Cork Hibs. The Cork Athletic team to face the Saints included past and future Irish internationals Jack O’Reilly and Florrie Burke, English-born star Jackie Lennox and Frank Cantwell, brother of Irish legend Noel who was also on the books of the club.

The LSL club had qualified for the

The match was covered live on RTÉ Radio, in what was surely one of the first examples of a Saints game ever broadcast, with commentary provided by Eamonn Andrews. The game finished 1-1, with Comerford opening the scoring for Pat’s on 16 minutes with a swerving shot. Cork missed a penalty on 29 but equalised through Broderick in the final minute of the first half.

“Twenty thousand soccer followers left Dalymount Park yesterday, supremely satisfied that they got their money’s worth in the Cup semi-final,” reported the Cork Examiner. “Once again, St Patrick’s Athletic, the Leinster League team, showed that they are not one whit inferior to League of Ireland teams,” reported Socaro in the Irish Press.

“To say that St Patrick’s were the better team is to put matters very mildly,” reported Socaro in the Press. “In the first half they played football of a brand unfortunately rarely provided by League of Ireland clubs.”

The attendance for the mid-week afternoon replay was an impressive 12,480, with a gate of £677/4/6.

The second replay was fixed for the Mardyke in Cork the following Wednesday.

9,243 attended the second replay with a gate of £704. The Saints again named an unchanged side.

The Pat’s team was listed as Kinahan, Kavanagh, Staines, Murray, Cummins, Mulville, Donnelly, Cassidy, Maher, Collins and Comerford. An unchanged side took on Cork in the replay four days later at Dalymount.

for the home side. Cork had gone two up early on and almost added to their lead with a penalty, only for Kinahan to save it, and referee Mr JN Brown of Liverpool to disallow the followup finish from Cork for offside.

Maher got one back for the Saints just after the half-hour, with Cork scoring another to lead 3-1 at the break. Pat’s laid siege to the Cork goal for much of the second half but succumbed to a fourth on 80 minutes, with a second Maher goal with five minutes to go making it 4-2.

Other Competitions and Snippets In the Leinster Senior Cup, the Saints defeated Leinster League opposition in the shape of Longford Town (4-2) and St James’ Gate (4-2 in a replay, after a 2-2 draw) on their way to Round Three, where they drew Drumcondra of the League of Ireland. “Drums Didn’t Make Noise in Inchicore” was the headline in the following day’s Press, reporting on a 1-1 draw.

“Once again a Leinster League club has struck a blow to League of Ireland prestige.” The replay the following Thursday at Tolka Park saw the home team have “an unexpectedly easy win over St Patrick’s Athletic,” according to WPM in the Independent, who reported on a 2-1 win for the premier side.

A View from Afar Ian Templeman

A couple of weekends ago, the thorny old subject of refereeing decisions reared its head once more, in some of the games that took place in this league on the Friday and Saturday.

Pats went up to Sligo and as we know, lost 2-0 and some valuable ground on Shamrock Rovers in the title chase, but it was a game where both goals carried what could be described as “an element of doubt” about them - from our admittedly biased perspective.

While that game at Sligo was going on, Shamrock Rovers were extending their lead at the top of the table with a 2-0 win over Waterford at Tallaght Stadium, but in the after-match interviews Waterford manager Marc Bircham made some strong comments about refereeing decisions during the game. He followed it up with a tweet in which he said “I can only be honest and say how it makes me feel. The players deserve better”, and attached was a video of him talking about the game where he said he felt like he wanted to give up football, he felt so dejected.

Observing the comments, Mark McCadden of the Irish Star responded by saying: “Relationship between LOI players/managers and match officials is seriously dysfunctional right now. Some awful decisions in recent weeks, including tonight. Marc Bircham (tomorrow's papers) likely to be sanctioned for comments. Not the answer.

League needs to listen to grievances”.

The following evening, Longford Town hosted Dundalk, and although the home side picked up a surprise 1-0 win, once again the focus was on refereeing decisions with Conan Byrne, once of this parish of course and now a pundit always worth listening to, tweeting afterwards that that in his opinion “3 players were sent off and 2 of the decisions are absolutely ridiculous".

As it happened, sandwiched in between these games was one I attended myself, over here in the English non-league pyramid. My team Daisy Hill were playing Nelson FC in a North West Counties League game on the Saturday afternoon, and we were also on the wrong end of a refereeing decision. In our case, with the game tied at 2-2 our goalkeeper was clattered in mid-air by an opposition forward when coming out to claim a cross, and as a result could only palm the ball out before falling awkwardly and hitting the ground with a thump. As the keeper lay dazed on the ground, the visiting centre forward smashed the loose ball into the net. To our disbelief, the referee gave the goal, and we lost the game 3-2.

There is, of course a modern day solution to these issues, albeit only at the top level, and it was never better demonstrated in the week after all those games mentioned took place. On the following Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, I watched various Champions League and Europa League games, some games live in their entirety and highlights of others, and there were numerous close calls and decisions that had to be made – but the match officials had the luxury of being able to utilise VAR. In most, if not all cases, they were extremely tough to call with the naked eye and it even needed several views on the incident before the decision was reached – but the correct decision was made in the end.

And there’s the rub. The introduction of VAR has brought about criticism, with complaints about delays in decisions, or players unsure whether to celebrate goals or not. But the one thing it does do

is that it takes away any feelings of injustice if a referee gets a decision wrong, when making an honest judgement from his or her position on the pitch in a split second.

As far as the League of Ireland is concerned, the debate about facilities in grounds has rumbled on for some time, so it would be hard to put a case for any spare funds being allocated to implementing VAR, when it could be used for developing facilities, or in grassroots football. I get that.

I really do think the introduction of VAR has brought about a lot of good in games when it has been used.

For a start, it gives clear evidence of what has actually happened, and as a result, players – and managers and indeed match officials – must find it satisfying that the truth is reached and any possible injustices are undone.

There is also an argument that it can increase the tension of an occasion while a decision is reached on a crucial incident, such as a goal being scored or a penalty awarded or not awarded, at a significant moment in a game.

But it must surely focus players’ minds a bit more too. Any handballs, dives, sneaky fouls, shirt tugs and in particular play acting will be picked up by the numerous cameras around the ground. The likelihood of being found out and exposed as attempting to cheat must now surely occupy a top level player’s thoughts and actions more now than it ever did in the pre-VAR days.

On top of that, the presence of the technology plays a part in reducing bad feeling between teams, as the use of VAR means there will be fewer opportunities for accusations of cheating, and any corresponding retaliation and resentment. More importantly, it will remove any suggestion of bias or a lack of integrity among the match officials themselves.

For me, I cannot see that there can be any reasonable argument or complaint about VAR becoming a part of the game, but of course,

But if even a reduced version could be introduced, maybe just one or two cameras at a game, it would be a start, and would at least be a starting point towards alleviating some of the issues which arose at Sligo, Tallaght and Longford a couple of weeks ago.

Unfortunately, though, I suspect that the days when VAR penalty and goal checks become the norm in the good old LOI may be some time away yet. Feelings of injustice and managerial outbursts such as the one from Marc Birchall and the associated repercussions from the ruling bodies, will continue to be a feature of this league’s landscape for the foreseeable future.
