Oh My Word!

We didn't realise how good we had it five years ago. Seamus Coleman, Wes Hoolahan, Shane Long, James McClean, David Meyler, Daryl Murphy, Stephen Quinn, Stephen Ward. All included in the Ireland squad for the last Euros, and all living proof that League of Ireland pitches are fertile grounds for bright young talent.

That was the last time Ireland qualified for a major tournament.

Even in the format of a seemingly ever-expanding competition, the Boys In Green failed to secure one of the 24 golden tickets for Euro 2020.

So we did what we always do in such circumstances – looked to the teams that did qualify for signs of irishness.

It feels as though the topic of Thomas Delaney's Irish heritage becomes a story in itself every few years. Whether he is lining out for the Danes against Ireland or appearing in a Champions League game for Borussia Dortmund, references to his ancestry are never too far away.

Ancestry, in this instance, is the right word. While Delaney does come from Irish stock, they left the old sod for the United States 175 years ago, before eventually packing their bags again for Denmark. For Delaney to be eligible to represent Ireland, the granny rule would need to become the seven-times-great-granny rule.

Not that his career would have necessarily benefited from Irish eligibility. That much was made clear in recent weeks.

As football fans here took up residence on the couch for another tournament of neutrality, Delaney was going about his job in a team that would reach the semi-final. It was a remarkable achievement

considering how the Euros started for them.

He was part of a three-man midfield for Denmark's tournament opener, against Finland. Shortly before halftime, football was relegated to irrelevance when Delaney's midfield partner, Christian Eriksen, suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch.

Thankfully, Eriksen was revived. The authorities' insistence that the match be completed that day was widely criticised.

The better team would go on to lose 1-0. The gulf in class was clear from the match statistics. Denmark enjoyed 70 percent possession and had 22 attempts on goal. Finland had one opportunity of note in the entire game and it yielded the only goal.

Playing a key role in the impenetrable Finnish defence that day was Daniel O'Shaughnessy. Upon seeing his name in the lineup, football fans across this country claimed him as one of our own.

"With a name like that, he must be Irish." They were right, too.

While born in Finland, he is the son of Robert O'Shaughnessy from Galway. Daniel and his brother Patrick – a former professional football – both hold Finnish and Irish citizenship. However, we can make no claims on Daniel, who has

represented his country of birth at every level from under-15 right up to the senior team.

Some would argue that underage football is no measure of a player's allegiance. Take Jack Grealish. The Aston Villa player wore the green of Ireland at under-17, under-18 and under-21 level before switching to his country of birth.

Grealish excelled in an Ireland jersey. In 2012, he was the FAI's under-17 Player of the Year, before receiving the same accolade for the under-21s three years later. His decision to choose England was heavily criticised on this side of the Irish Sea. Considering he was still a wet-behind-the-ears youngster, the criticism was harsh. If anyone – or any thing – should have been taken to task following Grealish's change of allegiance, it is the system that allows young players to country-hop in the first place.

Whatever about letting a player change their mind at underage level, the rules that facilitate such moves after they have made their senior debut do a disservice to international football.

As well as representing Ireland at under-16, -17, -19, and -21 level, Declan Rice lined out for the senior team three times. In 2019, he switched to his country of birth and is now a regular in the England

team. Just like Grealish, he was outstanding for Ireland, being voted under-17 Player of the Year in 2016 and FAI Young International Player of the year two years later.

Following his switch, Rice was criticised in much the same way as Grealish. Young people finding their way should not be subject to such scrutiny. He will have had agents, managers, club representatives, family, friends, and even sections from the media advising him on the matter. Again, it was the system facilitating the switch that should have been criticised.

Both Grealish and Rice played key roles against Thomas Delaney's Denmark as England booked their place in a major tournament final for the first time since 1966. A strong Irish flavour but not a green jersey in sight.

In different circumstances, in a different world, Grealish, Rice,

Delaney and O'Shaughnessy would have lined out for Ireland at the Euros. They would have sang Amhrán na bhFiann, kissed the crest, celebrated victories with a pint of Guinness. They may have even been joined for the celebratory pint by Harry Kane, who qualifies to play for Ireland through his father Patrick.

The ancestry rule has been good to us in the past. It helped Ireland secure the services of influential players like Andy Townsend, John Aldridge, Ray Houghton and Alan McLoughlin. But the well ran dry.

National football associations – particularly the English FA – became much more protective of emerging talents who were eligible to play for other countries.

Euro 2016 helped open some people's eyes. In time, the famous picture of the super eight, kitted out in the attire of their former clubs, will be analysed through a different lens.

Our league continues to produce talented young footballers who will one day don the green jersey. The academy systems in place, which service the under-15, -17 and -19 national leagues, have been hugely positive developments. People are beginning to realise that a football industry exists here.

No such systems were in place when Hoolahan, Coleman, McClean, Quinn and co set off on their journeys. This is still just the start, but we are now showing signs of self-sufficiency.

Amen to that.

Worry not, though. We don't have to look overseas for players when the structures have finally been put in place to develop our own.

St Patrick's Athletic left Legia Warsaw bewildered in Poland as the Inchicore side defied the odds both on and off the pitch to record a 1-1 draw and one their best away displays in Europe.

Christy Fagan gave St Pat's a deserved 1-0 lead at half-time.

However, Legia struck late through Miroslav Radovic to secure a draw for the home side.

The teams meet at Tallaght Stadium next Wednesday for the second leg.

Fagan's first half goal looked to have Liam Buckley's side well positioned to knock out a club with infinitely greater resources, before the heartbreaking concession of a stoppage-time equaliser.

Despite the magnificence of the performance, perspective had come earlier in the day with the desperately sad news that an English-based St Patrick's fan had been found dead in his Warsaw hotel room.

While Legia started eight full internationals, Buckley, as expected, set his side up to counter their formation directly, starting with Greg Bolger paired with Keith Fahey as a midfield defensive shield in front of the back four.

Buckley spoke in the build-up of it being essential his side kept the ball when they had it as being key to taking anything back to Dublin.

And while they saw very little of it early on, they were tight on Legia when the Poles came at them, and

excellent on the counter-attack, as they troubled their opponents any time they got forward.

Having frustrated Legia, who lost Portuguese striker Orlando Sa to injury on 17 minutes, St Patrick's visibly grew in confidence.

Killian Brennan collected skipper Ger O'Brien's free-kick to beat his man inside and bring a terrific tip-away save from Dusan Kuciak on 38 minutes.

A minute later, Chris Forrester's cheeky flick with his back to goal from Ian Bermingham's cross was straight at the home keeper.

Legia continued to struggle to cause St Patrick's any real problems despite their possession.

St Patrick's then enjoyed a purple patch in which they might have scored three times, instead having to settle for a 38th minute lead.

First Forrester brought a backtracking bat away from Kuciak with a 40-yard chip following the keeper's poor clearance.

Fahey then put Bermingham away on the overlap and his low cross was turned in from close range by Fagan.

It might have got far better four minutes later. Having worked a onetwo with Brennan, Kuciak got a strong touch to partially stop Fagan's low shot with Inaki Astiz clearing the loose ball as Legia's fans' chanting turned to whistles.

Super Saints Sophie Meehan Johnny Keegan

Sophie Meehan is a poet and artist from Dublin 8. Sophie grew up in Inchicore, just around the corner from Richmond Park, and on New Street, near Patrick's Cathedral. As well as poetry, Sophie also works in film, performance pieces, comics, zines and visual art. Earlier this year, Sophie co-founded the Working-Class Writing Archive, which aims to collect working-class writing from across Dublin.

What’s it like being an artist working across different disciplines?

“Definitely money and time. This is the first year I've ever been able to get by financially predominantly from writing and related projects, as I got a small amount of funding to finish my poetry collection from Fingal Arts when I lived in Balbriggan, and then Arts Council funding for the Working-Class Writing Archive.

“I feel strongly that there's a pinch point for early career workingclass

artists, because in order to get funding and opportunities you have to have built up a body of work and be actively engaged in the arts scene. But how are you supposed to do that if you're working in retail, for example, to pay rent? Being on the dole is demoralising as well and they don't understand how employment works for artists. There's a few ideas being worked on now that will hopefully help, like the social welfare scheme for artists and the universal basic income for artists.“ Can you tell us about the Working-Class Writing Archive?

“I'm collaborating with the academic and researcher Dr. Emma Penney on a digital archive of working-class writing across Dublin, from around the 1960s to the present day. I first met Emma when she was working on her PhD gathering the archive of KLEAR writing group in Kilbarrack. She showed me the work of Cathleen O'Neill and really helped me to understand where my own writing was coming from within a broader tradition. We had a historic pint in Kehoe's one Christmas and first chatted about the idea of an archive. We're gathering together work from all the writing groups across working-class Dublin, as well

There's such a rich literary tradition across working-class Dublin but the accepted narrative is that it was only the odd working-class writer like Brendan Behan as an anomaly. It's just that no-one has had access to the writing, a lot of it has been lying in community centres for decades and it's never been gathered together in one place.”

How did you guys go about securing funding?

The idea was on the backburner for a couple of years until the Arts Council announced the Literature Project Award. This award gives funding to literary projects that are a bit different. We were delighted to receive full funding to gather materials and create a website to house the archive, with the artist Áine O'Hara.

What are the goals of the archive?

The archive website is going to be a map of Dublin where people can scroll over an area and see all the writing that came out of that area. So, it will be a social history, a literary record and a way for people to see what has been coming out of our own communities. We hope it will continue growing and inspire more groups and writers, and also be used as a teaching tool in working-class studies in universities. Emma is a pioneer in the field and recently was one of the organisers of Ireland's first Working-Class Studies Conference.

your Granny always wrote poems and just hid them in a box under the bed, we're keen to bring them into the light. We also want the archive to reflect the diversity of the working class in Dublin, so we encourage submissions from Black working class people, people of colour and Travellers who also identify with growing up in a working-class context.

A lot of the archive so far is big bundles of books from projects and groups and centres; the Larkin Centre for the Unemployed in North Strand gave us a big stack recently. If anyone has been involved in writing groups, adult education classes or community projects that put out a book, pamphlet or broadsheet, we're looking for that. It doesn't need to have been published in any form either.

Once A Saint... Barry Ryan Damien Byrne

There have been several players to don the red and white of St Pat’s and become fan favourites throughout their time at the club. There are numerous favourites in the current team and names like Fagan, Foley and Maguire spring to mind from the past 20 years or so.

Clare native Barry Ryan is certainly one who would fit in that category and The Saint has recently caught up with Barry who spent three seasons in Inchicore from 2006 – 2008.

How did your move to St Pat’s come about and how did you settle in at the club?

“The move to St Pat’s came about when Johnny Mac gave me a call, I think we met in Heuston Station. I jumped at the chance; we’d just been relegated at Dublin City. I settled in straight away to be honest, there was a great bunch of lads there. I knew a few faces from around the league and the club fixed me up with accommodation so yeah it was great.”

We came close to breaking our cup hoodoo in 2006 against Derry in a crazy final. What were you’re memories of the lead up to the game?

“For the cup final build up it was a great experience getting the suits and stuff like that but obviously not a good result.

It was coming up to my Dad’s anniversary so there was a lot of interviews about that, a lot of the papers had picked up on that and it made it a bit emotional for me. There was a lot in the build up to that cup final.”

In the period between 2006 and 2008 the club had relative success although not picking up any silverware. What are your memories of that time at the club?

“Just falling short In the Cup final in 06, a few seconds in the league and second in the Setanta Cup over the years was hard. In my opinion we should have been winning things, which unfortunately we

You were a fan favourite during your time at the club, what are your memories with the fans and your standout memory at the club?

Elfsborg to me was the night of nights. I don’t think I’ve played in a better atmosphere than that night. It was an unbelievable experience and even looking back at videos of it now I still get goosebumps. I don’t know what it was about being at Pats but as soon as I landed there I had a great connection with the fans, if I went for a beer on a night out I’d meet fans and have a pint with them and I’ve never had a bad word to say about the St Pat’s fans, I still to this day look out for the results.”

“Coaching wise I’m doing a bit of coaching one on one with a few lads down here. I’m not involved with any team or anything like that. I’m getting involved in a venture called which is called Striker, where I will be looking after the goalkeeping element from ages 10 and up. That hasn’t taken off yet due to Covid but hopefully that will kick off later in the summer and carry on through to the winter once the kids are finished up with the GAA. Goal keeping coaching is where I want to go so that’s what I’ll be looking at in the future.”

ST PATRICK'S ATH 1 DROGHEDA UNITED 0 This contest, as intriguing as it was, never quite lived up to its billing. Not that John McDonnell will care having seen his side regroup after a sluggish start to nab full points, opening a five point lead over their opponents in the process.

Colm Foley's header sealed matters but Drogheda can feel hard done by. They grafted admirably throughout but eventually succumbed to a St Patrick's side much improved on their woeful first half offering.

In fact neither side demonstrated the free-flowing football that has typified their respective seasons. St Patrick's, in particular, were badly out of tune early on, squandering possession with sloppy passing and aimless balls forward.

With Joseph Ndo and Alan Kirby sidelined, their midfield lacked the creativity of previous performances. The onus, then, was on Keith Fahey to provide a spark, yet he was well marshalled throughout the first half.

Drogheda, contending with a string of injuries themselves, were not much better in the opening exchanges but steadily improved and eventually lorded possession.

Stephen Bradley's intelligent distribution served the visitors well and he soon woke team-mates from their slumber.

Unattractive and rarely profitable yet it afforded Mark Quigley room to tease.

But despite the striker's endeavour, those in support let him down all too often.

As it was, Drogheda's rearguard was solid if not watertight and the fact that unit went untested before the break frustrated the home support.

The visitors, buoyed by Stuart Byrne's early attempt which required a crucial Barry Ryan intervention, were hitting their stride by this stage.

Kevin Walker – Thank You For The Music Kevin Walker is not the typical professional footballer.

Currently playing for his hometown Örebro SK, he is better known to the non-football following Swedish public as the winner of reality show Swedish Idol in 2013.

Born to an Irish father and Swedish mother, he has also played underage football for the Swedish national team.

Seán: Kevin, firstly to address the Irish connection, what brought your father (former Bohs player Pat Walker) to Sweden back in the 1980s?

Kevin: That would be meeting my mother who is Swedish. After a number of years as a player in England my dad and mom moved to Finland for a short spell there. From Finland they moved to Gothenburg and have been living in Sweden since around 1986. He played with BK Häcken and GIF Sundsvall before switching into management.

S: You grew up in a footballing household so, with your brother Robert a fellow professional. Was there much of a rivalry between you two as kids?

K: My first touch of the football was probably a pass to my brother Rob. We would compete in everything growing up. We would push each other but always be best pals at the end of the day!

S: What did it feel like to break into the first team of your hometown Örebro SK? K: To be brought up to the senior squad is the first step for every player and it’s a great feeling. I was very happy and I knew I was not going to let the opportunity slip.

S: You’ve played for both AIK and Djurgårdens, Stockholm rivals.

Along with Hammarby, could you tell our readers what these clubs represent?

K: Djurgården and AIK were both founded in the same year (1891) and the rivalry goes way back. They are called the twin clubs in Stockholm. Hammarby is a bit of an outsider who have a

big following as do the other two clubs. Derby games have very big attendance and are viewed as amongst the top 20 rivalry games in Europe. The clubs stand for a lot of the same foundations and are important clubs in Swedish football.

S: In 2018 you won the Swedish Cup with Djurgårdens, and clinched the league on the final day of the season the year after.

What was special about that group of players to be able to achieve such success?

K: The group of players did not shy of any battle or hard work.

We put the effort in every single minute of the week.

S: In the noughties, Irish clubs used to routinely knock Swedes out of Europe (Cork v Djurgårdens & Malmo, Derry v Gothenburg, St Pats v Elfsborg).

Do you think the Swedish Allsvenskan has improved since then?

K: It was on the cards for me to apply for Irish citizenship but I have not done it yet. I think generally Irish players are more likely to get called up if they play in England.

S: Sweden is a country with a healthy music scene across many genres (e.g. The Radio Dept, Robyn, The Knife). What influenced you towards more acoustic music?

K: John Mayer I would say (Grammy win in 2003 for “Your Body is a Wonderland”). Loved his style of writing music and the way he expresses himself.

S: In the finals of Swedish Idol, what was it like performing live with Robbie Williams?

K: It was unreal. He was such a nice guy and an artist who will be remembered for long after we are all gone!

S: How have your teammates (or even opposing fans) reacted to your musical success?

K: They have actually been very interested and supportive!

S: What’s next for you in both football and music?

K: To give everything for my new/old club Örebro and make new music and release it to the world.

K: My feeling is that Swedish football has come on enormously. Teams are playing more possession orientated game plans and the best players are very likely to be acquired by the bigger leagues.

Who do you support in England?

Often children on our road ask me which soccer club do I support? I tell that I go to a lot of League of Ireland games, to Dalymount Park, Tolka Park, Tallaght Stadium and Richmond Park to watch the ‘Super Saints.’

Ah, but who do support in England they ask? Then they tell me who their own favourites are: Manchester United, City,

Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, etc.

Last year I heard a historian say that the trend of Irish people following the fortunes of English clubs began around 1908 when Val Harris left Shelbourne for Everton. The Toffees, who also had Irish players Billy Scott and Bill Lacey on their playing staff around that time, were definitely the best supported English team in Ireland.

Everton, who had become the first English club to have an Irish supporters club in the 1920’s, were considered by many as the Irish or Catholic club in Liverpool. Later in the forties the Blues signed players like goalkeeper Jimmy O’Neill, Peter Corr, Don Donovan and Mick Meagan.

If Everton were the pioneers in supporters’ clubs, then Manchester United soon eclipsed them, winning hearts and minds of Irish fans in the aftermath of their 4-2 win over Blackpool in the 1948 FA Cup final.

So by the time Liam Whelan and the Busby Babes came along, annual trips by United to Ireland were regular, deepening the bond between the club and their Irish supporters.

The Munich tragedy in 1958 when Whelan was one of eight players who died, saw yet another dramatic rise in United’s, and by extension, English football’s popularity.

The Irish Press, traditionally an anti-British paper, dedicated an editorial to mourn the passing of so many great players. The Meath GAA County Board passed a motion of sympathy to the relatives of the Munich air disaster and some Galway GAA clubs followed suit.

More significantly, Oscar Traynor, Fianna Fáil’s Minister for Justice opined: “Many of the players who have survived the crash will carry on the traditions of this famous club.”

While Manchester City rarely signed an Irish player, there was a steady stream of Irish players from North and South to Old Trafford. From The Republic United got: Cantwell, Giles, Tony and Pat Dunne, Givens, Daly, Martin, Grimes, Stapleton and in more recent years, Moran, McGrath, Irwin, Keane and O’Shea.

The North also had strong connections with United and among the players they sent to Old Trafford included: Jackie Blanchflower, Gregg, Best, McIlroy, Nicholl, McCreery, Anderson, Whiteside and Evans.

Liverpool’s big surge of support came later in the seventies and eighties. I remember taking the boat to Liverpool along with some work colleagues. In those days there was no need to book tickets in advance, simply turn up at Anfield and pay at the turnstile.

We didn’t stand in the Kop as we were told there was more comfort available in the ‘Paddock’ area. Sometimes we travelled on to Manchester by train, but my colleague, who was leading all those trips was a big City fan it was to Maine Road rather than Old Trafford that we headed.

We used to be fascinated as we left the grounds and meet paper boys selling the ‘Pink’ editions of the Liverpool Echo or Manchester Evening News which had reports on the games we had just seen.

How did they manage to do it so quickly?

When I travelled on the boat from the North Wall to Liverpool in the early seventies Steve Heighway was the only Irish player at the club. Later Whelan, Lawrenson, Beglin, Staunton, Aldridge, Houghton and Robinson flew the Irish flag at Anfield.

I remember a Liverpool game against Stoke City at Anfield in October 1972 when Gordon Banks was in goal for Stoke. I cannot remember the result, but what I do remember is the referee penalising Banks for stepping outside the 18-yard line with the ball in his hands. The following morning the England World Cup winner was involved in a car crash where he lost the sight of one eye and had to retire.

Banks later played in the US with Fort Lauderdale Strikers and famously made a guest appearance for the Saints here at Inchicore against Shamrock Rovers in October 1977 when an estimated attendance of 12,500 saw the 39 year-old keep a clean sheet in a 1-0 win.

Then Arsenal established an Irish colony at Highbury with six players all regulars: Jennings, Rice, Nelson, O’Leary, Brady and Stapleton.

Prior to the pandemic you would see groups of Irish supporters congregate at Dublin Airport early on Saturday mornings waiting for flights to various parts of England.

Many of the soccer fans who travel to England at weekends also attend League of Ireland games.

However, some of the day trippers turn their noses at the domestic game, which as we all know has a decent standard of football. Often all that is lacking at League of Ireland games is a decent attendance to provide a good atmosphere.

1947/48: “The Best Ever St Pat’s” Part One When we return in greater numbers to Inchicore’s welcoming hostelries before and after Pat’s games, the footballing discussions will move from social media posts to barside debates.

One of the perennials is a debate on the best Pat’s side of all time.

The teams from the golden eras of the 1950’s or 1990’s? Perhaps the most recent League and FAI Cup winning team from 2013 and 2014?

There are very few alive today who saw St Patrick’s Athletic before they entered the League of Ireland, but for those who were there, the team of the late forties were a match for any of their successors. Inchicore man Gerry McCord, who went on to play for the Saints in the 1950’s, was one of the many young fans who attended games from the mid-1940’s. “We knew most of the players and the committee,” he wrote. “90% were neighbours or lived in the general locality.”

“We never paid in. We would climb into Cassell’s Field at the Inchicore End, squeeze in under the corrugated tin fence, or chance climbing around the fence at the river. If you were lucky you only got your feet wet.” Gerry, who went on to deputise for the great Shay Gibbons in subsequent years and

played with many of the stars of the 1950’s wrote that the 1947/48 side was “for me, the best ever St Pat’s.”

It was a season which began like many others before it. An ad in the Herald on August 11th gave notice for training for the LSL (first) and AUL (second) teams to take part in training on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 7.30.

There seemed little indication of the extraordinary season to come.

As Dubliners took to bicycles as a result of a transport strike, the Herald reported that the Leinster League was getting into “full swing” on the first weekend in September. On their first outing Pat’s defeated Jacobs 5-2 and followed it up with a 6-0 win away to Bohemians B. “Leinster League Best Sides Clash” was the preview of the following week’s action, with Pat’s defeating new rivals Shamrock Rovers B 1-0 at Richmond Park.

“St Patrick’s Conquer Champions,” noted the headline a week later in the Herald after the Athletic defeated Transport 3-2 at the Carlisle Grounds in Bray. “It was a thrilling struggle between teams with unbeaten records before the start, and produced a great deal of clever

and effective football,” stated the match report.

“The only team now with full points, St Patrick’s Athletic, should retain the record with something to spare against Ierne at Inchicore,” went the preview on October 10th in the Herald. Nevertheless “Ierne put up a fine fight,” according to the match report in the Sunday Independent, with Pat’s coming back from a goal down to win 31.

The Saints travelled to Dundalk B on October 19th and came away with a 2-1 win, and retained their 100% record against St James’ Gate at home on November 2nd, winning 4-0.

The Athletic hosted Longford Town on Sunday November 9th at Richmond Park in what the following week’s Longford Leader noted was a “full-house crowd,” bemoaning the fact that despite the presence of a large proportion of away fans, Longford would not receive any of the proceeds.

The Saints’ 100% record, by this stage eight games in duration, came to a crashing end on November 16th at Milltown with a 2-1 loss to Shamrock Rovers B. Pat’s form continued to stutter the following week, with a 3-3 draw away to Grangegorman.

run into April with a 4-0 win away to Longford Town and a 31 home victory over Shelbourne B, eventually securing the League title with a 6-1 home win against Dundalk.

“Championship for St Patrick’s” was the headline in the Sunday Independent, with the match report noting that “the Athletic gave a first-rate display of clever, open football, and never allowed themselves to lose their grip on the game.”

“Grangegorman were very unlucky not to have beaten St Patrick’s,” noted the report in the Sunday Independent.

In December, Pat’s hammered league leaders Drumcondra B 6-1 at home and notched another six the following week, beating Ierne 6-0 at Richmond Rd with goals from Cassidy (3), Kinihan, Murray and McDonald. The Herald, rather harshly, noted that Cassidy’s hattrick was “spoiled” due to Murray and McDonald scoring in between his three goals.

The Saints didn’t resume League action until well into the new year, beating Jacobs 3-1 on January 18th. An “easy win” away to Shelbourne on a 5-2 scoreline followed on January 24th. A short

trip to the Iveagh Grounds came next to take on St James’ Gate.

“St Patrick’s continued to supplement their points and big goal crop by winning 5-2,” noted the Herald. Yet another away victory came on February 14th, with a 4-0 win over UCD at Belfield.

Pat’s played their first home League game in weeks on February 28th, beating Bohemians B 4-0 at Richmond Park. League football resumed in March a 2-1 win over Drumcondra B at Tolka Park.

Drums complained that Murray’s winner had gone in through a hole in the side of the net, but the goal stood.

In just their second year in Division I of the LSL – effectively the country’s second flight – St Patrick’s Athletic had won the League. Adding to their titles in the Intermediate League, AUL Divisions III, II and I, and two in the LSL Division II, it was the seventh League Championship win in their short existence.

The Saints swept up with a 4-1 win against Grangegorman on May 13th and a 5-2 win against Transport on May 23rd.

But it was not just the League in which St Patrick’s Athletic excelled this season.

Parts Two and Three in the coming editions of this programme will focus on extraordinary Cup successes which made the country sit up and take notice of the Pride of Inchicore.

A View from Afar Ian Templeman

The past couple of weeks have seen the opening rounds of this season’s UEFA club competitions get under way, with the four League of Ireland representatives, Shamrock Rovers, Bohemians, Dundalk and Sligo Rovers undertaking their latest excursions in Europe.

For the first time in many years of course, they will be taking part in two legged ties which won’t be decided by the away goals rule, and all ties level on aggregate at the end of the second leg will instead go to extra time and then penalties if required to settle the outcome.

I read with interest some of the statements and justifications that UEFA issued in the wake of the announcement, with UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin quoted as saying “It is no longer appropriate for an away goal to carry more weight”.

A UEFA statement said there is now a smaller gap between the number of home and away wins as well as home and away goals scored in European competitions, compared to when the rule was introduced. It also claimed that is down to a number of factors including pitch quality, better stadiums, better travel routes across Europe, and new technology such as VAR. There were also some additional comments from Aleksander Ceferin, in the statement, where he said: "The impact of the rule now runs counter to its original purpose as, in fact, it now dissuades home teams especially in first legs - from attacking, because they fear conceding a goal that would give their opponents a crucial advantage.

"There is also criticism of the unfairness, especially in extra-time, of obliging the home team to score twice when the away team has scored.

"It is fair to say that home advantage is now no longer as significant as it once was."

I think there are a number of points for debate there, and I can certainly agree with some of those raised, particularly in relation to pitch quality and stadiums.

Many clubs down the years will have stories to tell of

trips to some of the farther flung places of Europe, especially Eastern Europe, where the whole experience was not necessarily as welcoming and civilised as it would be now. Back in the day, there was always a suspicion that life was made as difficult as possible for visiting clubs, in order to generate as much of an advantage as possible for the home side as possible, without being overtly obvious. These days, that type of experience is rarely encountered.

However, I’m not so sure that I agree with Ceferin’s assertion that with the away goals rule in place, home teams were less likely to attack when playing at home, for fear of conceding a goal. I reckon there must have been plenty of European games over the years where the home side well and truly went for the jugular, while being roared on by their home support, to try and kill the tie off.

I know the circumstances can be different depending on whether it is a first or second leg, and it can obviously be the case that chasing goals after a first leg defeat will mean a different approach to facing relatively unknown opponents in a first leg, with teams anxious to avoid a trip into previously uncharted territory after a poor result at home.

In my personal experience, having spoken to many managers in my time on the non-league circuit in England, there has often been a view aired to me that building a lead at home in the first leg of a cup tie to defend in the second leg away from home is more preferable than having to try and come from a number of goals behind in front of an expectant home crowd in the second leg. I remember one manager saying that he would always prefer a first leg at home, because the pressure on the home team from their home support in the second leg can often be a negative influence as well as a positive one, irrespective of the first leg result.

Ronan O’Flaherty @iantemplemanloi defeat following a 1-0 home win over Russian side Krylia Sovetov took us through to a third round tie against Steaua Bucharest of Romania. Declan ‘Fabio’ O’Brien struck the only goal in the first leg, but Pats looked done and dusted when they went 3-0 down after 57 minutes in the second leg. But a deflected shot from Stuart Byrne gave Pats hope, before O’Brien struck again 11 minutes from time to seal the away goals win.

Then in 2012–13, the second Europa League meeting in successive years with Icelandic side IBV saw us win 1–0 at home thanks to a Christy Fagan goal,

To test the theory closer to home, I took a look back at Pats’ European record, to see how often the Super Saints have either benefitted or been eliminated as a result of the away goals rule. In total, five ties involving the club across the various European competitions have been settled this way, the first two occasions in the Inter Toto Cup in 2002, where the Saints notched up away goal aggregate wins over Croatian side Rijeka, and Gent from Belgium, in each case the aggregate score ended 3-3.

The three others were all in the Europa League, and curiously all of those ties involved a 1-0 home win in the first leg. First of all, in the Second Qualifying Round of the 2009–10 competition, a 3-2 away

With IBV matching that score over 90 minutes in the second leg, the game went to extra-time, but after the setback of IBV scoring again, Stephen O'Flynn was the Pats hero with an immediate response which levelled the tie and sent Pats through to a tie with Siroki Brijeg and then a memorable meeting with Hannover 96.

The last occasion was in season 2016–17, in the First Qualifying Round. Once again. a goal from Christy Fagan earned a 1-0 win at Richmond Park against Jeunesse Esch of Luxembourg in the first leg which was followed by a 2-1 defeat over in Esch-sur-Alzette, but the Saints progressed courtesy of Darren Dennehy’s goal in Luxembourg.

That set up a tie in the next round against Dinamo Minsk, but after an encouraging 1-1 draw over in Minsk in the first leg thanks to another Christy Fagan strike, the benefit of an away goal proved to be

irrelevant as a 1-0 defeat here ended the European run for another year.

I don’t know if you can draw much in the way of a conclusion from those examples, and those who actually attended the games will be much better placed to comment than I am, but my feeling is that a team being roared on by a Richmond Park crowd on a European night would have gone into all those first leg ties on the front foot, rather than with a cautious approach. However, a game plan may come down to a number of factors, including individual managerial opinions and player availability on the day, as to whether being at home in the first leg is seen as being advantageous or not.

Going back to UEFA’s statement when they announced the rule change, it said statistics show a steady decline in home advantage since the 1970s, with the ratio of goals scored at home and away changing from 2.02/0.95 to 1.58/1.15. Statistics can be twisted in many ways, but maybe those figures do back Aleksander Ceferin’s point when he says that home advantage is not as significant as it used to be.

Personally, I’m not really sure if this abolition of the away goals rule will lead to a noticeable change in approach in two legged European ties – but I will be watching with interest to see if there is, starting this week.
