Good evening, Welcome to your virtual programme for a real game this time, as opposed to our earlier edition for the cancelled match between these teams. We have added in some great new content for this edition so I hope you enjoy the read, wherever you are.

This is our penultimate edition for this season so thanks to all who have got involved and helped out with both the physical and digital programmes, particularly Joe O'Rourke on design. We are happy that we managed to keep the programme going for the duration of this very truncated season and I hope it's added something to these very strange matchday experiences.

We hope to sign off with a flourish against Bohs and let's not forget that we still have something to play for this season. Whether that's an unlikely push for Europe or an unwelcome encounter with a relegation playoff remains to be seen!

Good evening and welcome to this week's "virtual" programme for the visit of the league champions.

In this most bizarre of years, we find ourselves entering the last couple of weeks of the season with the theoretical possibility of finishing third, which would secure automatic qualification for Europe, or ninth, which would condemn us to a relegation play-off.

The former now looks a tall order, and hopefully we can pick up the necessary points in our remaining fixtures to rule out the latter. But it certainly demonstrates the importance of momentum, especially in a curtailed season. When I originally wrote the foreword for this fixture, before it was postponed, we were on a very good run with two convincing wins following up two very solid draws. Unfortunately, COVID-related postponements meant we didn't in fact have a game for almost 4 weeks. and when we returned to the fray last Wednesday, a slow start cost us all three points in a fixture we would have hoped to win. That has dealt a hammerblow to the players, the staff and the supporters, but there are still 9 points to play for (admittedly against the top three) and I have no doubt that you will see a performance today that shows determination to keep our European hopes alive.

Not only is it a bizarre year but the consequences have made it a bizarre season, with more than a little of the rollercoaster about it. One has to feel for Cork City - double winners so very recently and now relegated. Would they have had the space to pull out of trouble if the season had run its normal

length? We'll never know. And then, of course, the ultimate rollercoaster as experienced by today's visitors. Their season seemed a write-off when poor league form, by their standards, and a Champions League defeat against less than intimidating opposition, led to the departure of the management team.

Just a few weeks later they had pulled off the Holy Grail of Europa League Group Stage qualification and were looking forward to glamour nights such as last Thursday's trip to Arsenal. We can only congratulate them on their achievement and hope that they have at least one eye on this Thursday's visit to Vienna.

We ourselves will have a somewhat shorter trip this Wednesday, to the fine South Dublin County Council Stadium in Tallaght where we will take on the newly-crowned champions Shamrock Rovers. Whatever about the unusual nature of this season, there can be no disputing the quality of their achievement. They have run away with the league title, with two draws the only blemishes on an otherwise perfect record. One of those was, of course, in Richmond Park, and I hope it won't put too much of a dent in their celebrations if we can repeat that or go one better on Wednesday.

The break in fixtures came at a time when we needed it least.

However, if 2020 has taught us anything, it is that uncertainty and upheaval lurks around every corner. As we faced into a league match against Dundalk on October 9, we did so with optimism.

The game against Dundalk was scheduled to take place six days after the victory in Cork.

The cancellation was unavoidable and was another reminder, in these challenging times, that the health of your fellow human is more important than any game of football.

As a manager, it is particularly satisfying to come away from a game with the result that your team's performance deserved. I feel as though that was certainly the case against Shelbourne and Cork City.

Against Cork, in particular, the 2-1 scoreline did not reflect how dominant we were at Turners Cross. On another occasion, we would have scored a few more.

The 2-0 home win over Shelbourne was equally pleasing, both for the manner of the victory and the quality of the goals.

We finally returned to action against Finn Harps on Wednesday, fully 25 days after our most recent league outing.

The gap was far from ideal but we approached the game in a focused and upbeat frame of mind. Unfortunately, we got off to a disappointing start, falling behind in the third minute. It was 2-0 after 11 minutes but the character the players showed thereafter was encouraging to witness.

The team had been performing well for a number of weeks, not just over the course of the aforementioned fixtures. Prior to those games, the players gave strong accounts of themselves in scoreless draws against Derry City and Sligo Rovers. Against Sligo, in particular, we hit the woodwork a couple of times and were unlucky not to take all three points.

Dundalk, but we relish the opportunity of coming up against such a strong side.

Before going any further, I would like to welcome Filippo Giovagnoli, his players and everybody connected with Dundalk to Richmond Park.

Filippo and his players come into this game on a high after rubbing shoulders with Arsenal a few days ago. Qualifying for the group stages of the Europa League was a magnificent achievement in itself. Anything else is bonus territory. They acquitted themselves well at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday and we know they'll be ready to go again today.

As well as possessing talent and skill, this group of players is honest. They always leave it out on the pitch and I was proud of how they dug in and clawed the game back to 2-2. The nature of Finn Harps' third goal was deeply frustrating, but we can't dwell on the defeat for a moment, because the size of this evening's challenge is significant and calls for total commitment.

After three and a half weeks without a game, I am acutely aware that St Pat's supporters were looking forward to watching the match against Harps. For this reason more than any other, I was disappointed that we didn't come away from the game with at least a share of the spoils.

However, we have bounced back from disappointments before this season and the intention is to do it again.

2020: The year when we all looked back With the world in a worrying state of illness, people sought comfort in the certainty of past happenings. As professional sport ceased to exist for a time, reminiscing was our best way of reconnecting with what we enjoy most.

Old clips, housed on YouTube, were visited with regularity. Such activity is dictated by personal preference. One person's Fagan-against-Derry is another's Campbellagainst-Dundalk. Equally, if "Timofte against Bonner" is the search of choice for person A, it could be "Shevchenko against Dudek" for person B. Or even "Graziani against Grobbelaar" for person C. Moving away from the realm of The Beautiful Game in our choice of highlight reel, we indulged in Collins versus Eubank (original and sequel), Taylor versus Ochigava, Hogan-Andre, O'SullivanSzabo, Riverdance. And they were all followed by rabbit holes, which have the capacity to take you just about anywhere.

We wilfully entered the rabbit hole, without as much as a momentary pause for where it would lead to. Who could blame us? There was nothing present-day to watch. And nowhere present-day to go.

There are only so many episodes of 'The Chase' one can absorb; only so many Zoom quizzes a household can participate in. Old clips played a part in getting some of us through the first lockdown. But our tummies continued to grumble for a hearty helping of live sport, until it finally returned, albeit minus the spectators.

placed Shelbourne had steeled themselves to capitalise on any Derry slip-up in their home match against St Patrick’s Athletic. In order for Dundalk to nick the title, they needed both Derry and Shelbourne to fail to win, while they would also have to see off Galway United.

And so it transpired.

Mercifully, the latest lockdown hasn't coincided with another widespread cancellation of top-level sport.

Earlier this year, Dundalk fans allowed themselves a communal moment of reminiscence about past glory. They didn't need the excuse of Covid to wind back the clock either; the 25th anniversary of their ninth league title triumph was reason enough in itself.

As conclusions to a season go, the final day of the 1994-95 campaign stands out for the feast of drama it served up.

Entering that fateful Sunday of football occupying third place, Dundalk harboured outside hopes of becoming champions. Derry City led the way, and a win at St Mel's Park against Athlone Town would have secured the title for the Candystripes. Second-

The scene of Dundalk fans, assembled en masse on the Oriel Park surface, waiting for their heroes in black and white to be confirmed as the best in the country, is an iconic moment in the history of this unappreciated league.

The old cliché of a league campaign being a marathon rather than a sprint had never been so apt. The Lilywhites trailed the pace-setters for the bulk of the season but took the lead when it counted – right at the finish line.

Had the 1995 league champions been crowned halfway through the season, Dundalk's name would not have been inscribed on the base of the trophy. Such sentiments could almost be applied to the Oriel

Park men last season: if time had been called on the 2019 season after Shamrock Rovers played their eighteenth game, both teams would have only been separated by goal difference. However, the long haul of a full season is the true measure of title-winning pedigree.

So it proved, as Vinny Perth's men finished 11 points clear at the summit.

"There are no trophies handed out at this stage of the season. We're just taking it one game at a time."

Any idea who said that?

Don't think too long and hard about it. The answer can be attributed to most managers who have guided a team to the top of the table in the early stages of a season.

In any other year, this is inevitably the type of rhetoric that would be espoused by a manager after his team extended their lead at the top following the fourteenth game of a 36-match season. This year, however, there was no need for such cautious statements.

This year, it only took fourteen games to get the deed done. Any other season, such a feat would have been mathematically impossible.

This season has been the most forgettable in League of Ireland history. Like so many aspects of life in 2020, it has almost been a write-off. To crown a champion after 14 games borders on farcical.

Does it merit all the compliments that automatically come with it? Is it title number 18 or title number 17.5? Or should it even be acknowledged as a title at all?

No. Last year, 38 points would have been enough to secure a seventh-place finish in a ten-team league.

guaranteed an eighth-place finish, one position ahead of relegated Limerick. In 2017, it would have represented a total of three points more than relegated Galway United. The year before that, it was enough to ensure that Galway United finished ninth in a 12-team league. You get the idea.

It takes a good team to be top of the league after 18 games, but a great team to occupy that position after 36. We'll just never know.

When the first ball of the 2020 season was kicked in anger, back on February 14, it was game one of 36.

Following the shortening of the season, specific stipulations should have been agreed upon, one of which being the team that finishes first is nominated as the league's representative in the Champions League but cannot be proclaimed champions of Ireland. The same should go for the team occupying second place after 18 games: they would be guaranteed qualification to the preliminary stages of the Europa League but could not be recognised as the Premier Division runners-up.

If the big winners in this sorry situation are Shamrock Rovers, the big losers might just be Cork

City, who had no time to reverse their woeful start to the season and were relegated to the First Division. Teams that missed out on playoff positions in the First Division could be forgiven for feeling equally perturbed.

As well as being the year the table lied, 2020 was the year that attempted to redeem itself.

With strong indications that a vaccine for Covid-19 is edging closer to approval, the people of this place we call Earth have found reason to utter the word 'hope'. Tempered hope, but hope nonetheless.

Yours truly has even been engaging in a spot of the 'h' word.

The 2021 season will hopefully be a 36-game competition: a marathon of football that decides the identity of the best team in the country. Hopefully it will be a competition that rewards excellence with the presentation of silverware and gold medals at the finish line.

It will be a competition that refuses to hand out medals to those who lead at the halfway mark.

BLUES PLAY SANTA CLAUS ST. PATRICKS ATHLETIC must have thought Christmas had come early in Kilcohan Park yesterday, twice they came from behind to earn a welcome away draw and a valuable point.

Waterford played them out of the game for much of the first half with delightful approach work, mainly inspired from the midfield by Terry Conroy and they were unlucky to see their score sheet blank at the interval.

Five minutes into the second half Waterford went into the lead from a rather dubious penalty award and looked all set for a win. But, instead of being inspired by this encouragement they then proceeded to throw the game away, with their defence collectively and playmanager Tommy Jackson in particular playing Santa Claus.

Indeed, the Waterford defence were in such generous mood they almost gave away two more gift goals.

After a scoreless first half, in which Waterford might have built up a commanding lead against a strong wind, the home side looked well in control. But the signs had been there in the opening half when Peter Thomas had been inspired to two superb saves — one from a blockbusting free from all of 35 yards by central defender ]. M. Cleary and the other from a great header by Mahon, St. Pats' man of the match. But it still looked safe for Waterforfd five minutes after the re-start when Larry Murray was adjudged to have been taken down in the area and Virmy McCarthy converted the spot kick to give Waterford the lead.

Five minutes later St. Pats however, were back on terms when the whole Waterford defence just inside their own half stood up appealing for off side. But the flag never went up and Mahon chased the ball to the end line before flicking it into the net for a great equaliser. The Waterford defence were in a state of panic after this and both Reid and Hynes must be faulted for not putting this game beyond Waterford's reach.

Instead of which, in the 65th minute Conroy started the movement which went via Madigan to Murray who restored Waterford's lead with a header just inside the post.

In less than a minute St. Pats were again back on terms. Lyons failed to clear the ball on the right of the Waterford area and it broke to Jackson, who, with a half dozen

RUSSELL HEADER PROVES DECISIVE FOR THE SAINTS Derry lose for first time in 12 games A 51st minute header from Martin Russell proved decisive at Richmond Park last night, as St Patrick’s Athletic finally got back to winning ways with a 10 win over last week’s FAI Cup winners, Derry City, who lost for the first time in 12 games.

The all important winner by Russell came just six minutes into the second half, as a classy move saw Liam Kelly find Ger McCarthy wide on the right and his perfect cross was brilliantly met by Russell, who powerfully headed home to secure the Saints’ first win in seven outings.

It was no more than the home side deserved, as just three minutes after the restart, Colm Foley and Jamie Harris both saw goal-bound efforts cleared off the line.

Yet within two minutes of going behind, Derry were most unlucky not to be back on level terms as Kieran Martyn and Peter Hutton both saw well-struck shots blocked inside the box.

While it was the Saints who enjoyed the majority of the play and perhaps chances in the opening half, it was indeed the visitors who went closest to breaking the deadlock prior to the interval.

Midway through the half, the City strike force linked well to split open the home side's rear guard with Tommy McCallion playing in fellow forward, Jamie Hughes.

Other than that, it was St Pats who enjoyed plenty of play, although they were limited to half chances, with Martin Russell and Paul Donnelly both trying their luck from longrange but neither was able to find a way past Alan Gough. who also showed safe handling to deny Ger McCarthy in the 40thminute.

HOW IS 2020 GOING SO FAR? It depends on which way you look at it.

While Dundalk's indifferent league form means they won't be retaining the Premier Division title they've won five out of the last six years, there is one major reason to be cheerful.

The Lilywhites have reached the group stage of the Europa League for the second time in five years and can now look forward to an autumn filled with clashes against Premier League giants Arsenal, Rapid Wien of Austria and FK Molde of Norway.

Back on the domestic front, things aren't exactly rosy. Dundalk have lost four times during the condensed season and lie in sixth place in the table at the time of writing, a point behind Saints. However, the club's European exploits mean that they have games in hand which could see them climb the table and ensure additional continental football in 2021.

They also have an FAI Cup quarter-final against Bohemians to look forward to.

ONE TO WATCH The fact that Dundalk have gone so far into the Europa League means that their first choice squad members have often been sacrificed in Premier Division games. This makes their starting XI difficult to predict and with their opening group game against Molde on the horizon, tonight will probably be no different.

If he does start, keep an eye out for former Wigan Athletic man Jordan Flores. The midfielder has scored some high profile goals this season, including an outstanding volley against Shamrock Rovers which attracted widespread attention on social media.

IN THE DUGOUT When Filippo Giovagnoli arrived at Oriel Park in August, many in Irish football circles greeted the news with the words 'Filippo who?"

Since then, the Italian has steered the club into the Europa League group stages and appears set to be offered the head coach role on a permanent basis.

Giovagnoli has previously been technical director at AC Milan's Junior Camps before moving to New York where he worked at Metropolitan Oval Academy.

Success Returns The first half of the 1980’s saw various experiments with League format and rules, amongst them trials with three points for a win (not introduced permanently until the mid 90’s) and four points for away wins. The League of Ireland was split into a Premier Division and First Division for 1985-86. The previous season almost saw Pat’s relegated at the first opportunity; only a late rally with three wins in their final three games saw relegation averted by a single point. The Saints never looked back – in the 35 seasons since, Patrick’s are the only Premier Division team to have avoided relegation and the relegation/promotion playoff.

The eighties began with midtable League finishes similar to the decade before. 1981-82 gave Richmond regulars something to shout about.

Manager Charlie Walker signed 21-year Paul McGrath from junior club Dalkey United. “The Black Pearl of Inchicore” went on to excel for the Saints in various positions as the season continued, netting four times in 31 overall appearances. His talents didn’t go unnoticed. He won the second-ever PFAI Player of the Year Award and earned a transfer to Manchester United which put him on the path to legendary status. The move to Old Trafford reportedly saved St Pat’s three separate times; firstly due to the transfer fee, then the receipts from the friendly game at Dalymount against Man United agreed as part of the deal, and finally the bonus received on McGrath’s first Irish cap against Italy in 1985.

Walker’s time in charge finished in 1984 with only the 1982-83 Leinster Senior Cup to his name. His two replacements, Eoin Hand and Jimmy Jackson, barely lasted a season each with little to celebrate.

Enter Brian Kerr. The Drimnagh man had followed the Saints since childhood and had significant experience as an assistant manager and coach at

Shelbourne, Home Farm and Drogheda, as well as Liam Touhy’s Irish youth setup. But he hadn’t managed a team by himself. If it was a gamble by the Pat’s board, they surely hit the jackpot.

Indeed, Kerr’s ten-year reign began with a trophy – the 1986-87 Leinster Senior Cup. A fifth place League finish that season was the highest in almost twenty years. Better was to come. 1987-88, Kerr’s first full season in charge, saw an almost entirely new team featuring the likes of Pat Kelch, Maurice O’Driscoll, Dave Henderson, Paddy Dillon, Mark Ennis, Mick Moody, Damien Byrne, Curtis Fleming, John Treacy, John McDonnell and Pat Fenlon. Kerr combined experienced League of Ireland pros with hungry and talented youngsters in a well-organised side. It all came down to the final game of the season in Oriel Park with Dundalk just one point ahead. Paddy Dillon was sent off in a “Hand of God” incident and the game finished 1-1, with Dundalk sealing the Championship by a point.

Pat’s returned to Europe with a first round UEFA Cup exit to Hearts in 1988-89, a season which saw a fourth place finish in the League. Boosted by more astute Kerr signings like Joe Lawless and a young Paul Osam, 1989-90 saw a Leinster Senior Cup win, but that season is most fondly remembered for Pat’s first title in 34 years. Mark Ennis finished League top scorer – the first Pat’s player since Shay Gibbons – as Pat’s won two games within 24 hours, the first v UCD, and the second in United Park, Drogheda, to seal the title.

Sweet as it was, victory was tinged with a little homesickness. Pat’s had left Richmond Park at the end of the previous season with plans to spend one season Harold’s Cross Greyhound Stadium while the old ground was renovated. But they barely made it back.

Bank of Ireland Begin Together Awards – Results Announced Overall Local Business and Community Response Initiative (Special Covid Response Award) On Tuesday morning it was announced that St Patrick’s Athletic, alongside Frontline Make Change, the Dublin South City Partnership, and the Kilmainham Inchicore Network had claimed the runner up prize in the nationwide category of Local Business and Community Response to Covid-19 initiative. Whilst disappointed not to win the overall prize, I would like to congratulate the town of Tramore for their outstanding entry and subsequent success. For ourselves as a club, it is great to receive recognition for our commitment to supporting our local community.

The club is an asset to the Inchicore area and must strive to play as active a role in local affairs as possible – providing that our involvement benefits the people living locally and the essential service providers that operate here. We must never assume that we have an inherent knowledge of how we can benefit groups or individuals and must always seek to understand how we are perceived from those outside of our supporter base. Whilst we have been here for almost a century, we continue to have much to learn. We need to be alert of the shifting demography of our catchment area and the socio-economic factors that accompany that shift. For example, we must consider the short to medium term consequences of Covid-19 on our community, which groups will it affect the most and what role (if any) can we play in supporting them?

We all want our games to the focal point of the local community on Friday nights but there is an

everchanging bigger picture – the absence of live games actually serves as an opportunity to truly reflect on our values and composition and how our message is conveyed to Inchicore, Dublin 8, Dublin 10, Dublin 12, and beyond. As areas develop (or redevelop) institutions like football clubs can play a key role in preserving the traditions and values of an area – this should never be too far from our thoughts. It gives me great pride that the judge’s referenced (comments below) the volunteer commitment of St Patrick’s Athletic – volunteerism is a theme we can continue to develop through our community programmes which in turn would contribute positively to community cohesion – one such example of how we can promote positive values.

I am writing this two and a half years into my time (as an employee) and I feel we have much more to do to increase our relevance to the community having only really scratched the surface of what we can achieve together. When I look around the League of Ireland at the moment at this hugely significant juncture in our history, I see a clear opportunity for the FAI and clubs to work together to make sure our long standing clubs, full of local history and tradition, tell their stories more convincingly and listen attentively to those living and working on our doorsteps.

Inchicore and Kilmainham’s wonderful ‘Food Project’ gave the judges the opportunity to hear excellent, seamless and passionate presentations.

They also heard the voices of the beneficiaries of the project.

The judges saw this initiative as an excellent example of a social engagement project.

The project demonstrated Ní Neart Go Cur Le Chéile with wonderful commitment, planning, and resourcing, as well as generous food donations and a great spirit of entrepreneurship.

The judges were impressed by the project’s legacy which includes food poverty research, a befriending service, and an intercultural football project.

The judges made a point of acknowledging the volunteer commitment of St Patrick’s Athletic for their role in responding to Covid-19.

Dundalk has been the top club in the League of Ireland in recent seasons, winning the Premier Division in five of the last six seasons and three years ago they became the first Irish club to gain a point in the Europa League group stages.

Back in the sixties the County Louth club also made history when they became the first League of Ireland club to win a game in the European Cup. After losing the first leg of their European Cup preliminary round tie 3-0 to FC Zurich at Dalymount Park in September 1963, nobody gave the ‘The Town’ much hope as they headed for Zurich for the second leg on September 25.

But goals from Dermot Cross and Jimmy Hasty saw Dundalk pull of a shock 2-1 win. At two-nil, Hasty hit the post and then Zurich got a late goal which saw the Swiss club progress to the first round 4-2 on aggregate.

Cross was a Dubliner, who joined Dundalk in 1962, while Hasty was from Belfast. He joined the club in 1960 thanks to the promptings of club chairman Jim Malone.

Malone told the Dundalk board he had discovered an exciting talent, a centre-forward who was scoring goals for fun with Newry Town.

The player’s name was Jimmy Hasty.

Another board member spoke up. He had heard of Hasty, heard something fanciful, that the striker had only one arm. Malone conceded this was true, Hasty had only one arm, but he insisted that Dundalk should sign him.

The board did not often say ‘no’ to its chairman but did so back then. We are not, Malone was told, in the business of signing freaks. Malone then revealed he had in fact already signed the player with a personal cheque.

On November 20, 1960 Hasty made his debut in a 2-2 draw against Cork Celtic at Oriel Park. There was huge interest in the new player from across the border and Hasty didn’t disappoint, with a great performance.

John Murphy captained that Dundalk team in the early sixties and has fond memories of his former colleague from Belfast.

John, who celebrated his 82nd birthday last May, still works as a match analyst for Dundalk FM

Radio Station. He said: “Jimmy scored one and brought gasps of astonishment for his football skills. His ability to ghost past defenders was greeted with disbelief. He wasn’t just a goal scorer, he was the general of every attack, holding up the ball and setting up perfect passes for his colleagues.” ‘‘Jimmy was a big man, just over six foot and people were amazed at his balance. He could use the stump of his arm to lean on players and referees wouldn’t see it. He could score with both feet, was a brilliant header of the ball, everything a striker needed.’’ ‘‘The novelty of seeing a man with just one arm play soccer at the top level meant huge crowds wherever Dundalk played that first season,’’ added John.

An injury free 1963-64 season saw Jimmy score 35 goals including 18 in the League, sharing the title of top scorer with Eddie Bailham of Shamrock Rovers and Johnny Kingston of Cork Hibernians. Jimmy’s overall record for Dundalk was 103 goals in 170 games.

Over his last two seasons at Oriel Park Jimmy was rarely fully match fit and, lacking support, the goals dried up. He was released at the end of 1965-66 and joined neighbours Drogheda for one season.

Jimmy, who was born in Sailertown, in the Belfast dockland area in 1936, lost his arm in an accident when he was 14, on his first day working at the seafront mill.

The teenager showed remarkable resilience to overcome his disability and quickly recovered his balance back on the pitch playing for St Joseph’s in the Down and Connor League. He left the junior ranks for Islandmagee and then moved to Newry Town who at time played in the Irish League ‘B’ division.

‘The Troubles’ were erupting when Jimmy returned to Belfast in the late sixties, but he made a new life: married his childhood sweetheart, Margaret, had two sons, Paul and Martin, and got a job with a bookmakers.

On October 11, 1974 Hasty then aged 38, was walking his usual route to work, down Brougham Street when he was shot dead. It was a sectarian murder attributed to the Protestant Action Group; Hasty was victim number 1,209 of ‘The Troubles.’

What was your inspiration for the idea?

My inspiration came from former Mayo Gaelic footballer, David Brady, who contacted elderly and isolated residents of his home town county every Friday evening and I decided to do something similar with LOI players throughout the country.

Were you surprised by the level of involvement?

I was surprised by how many players, ex players, coaches, managers, referees and journalists were wanting to get on board. I sent it to my contacts and fairly quickly, I had around 100 signed up but within 24 hours, and then that had risen to over 200 with people reaching out to me. This initiative could not have happened without the players and everyone who signed up and they deserve enormous credit for this.

How many clubs have got involved?

Funnily enough, it's not about the clubs, more so the players. Some clubs have got in touch to ask what they could do. Obviously Pat’s put out a video which has been viewed nearly 20,000 times which really helped as well. Cobh, Longford, Sligo, Bray, Drogheda, Wexford, Finn Harps reached out to me personally which was really nice too.

Who has got involved from St Patrick’s Athletic?

Players and ex players of pats have been in huge demand and I haven't been able to get through all the names on my list yet to allow them to call someone.

I don't know if I would have the time to continue it long term. It has taken up my whole week arranging calls and ensuring that calls are made. But listening to the interactions between some has been really heart warming.

It could be something that the club's may look at in the future.

If you were to receive a phonecall fro any LOI player, past or present, who would it be and why?

That's a tough question.

I've interviewed a lot of players past and present in the league on the podcast and the ones that have a great story to tell are always the most interesting ones.

I'd love to sit down with Eamon Zayed and go through his career after he left the LOI. Would be fascinating.

A View from Afar Ian Templeman

This coming Tuesday, November 3rd, AFC Wimbledon host Doncaster Rovers in an English League One clash. It’s not a game that would not normally register with many football followers, aside of supporters of both clubs, but it’s a bit more notable than many may realise – and it has a particular significance for me.

The reason for that is that the game will be the first to be played at AFC Wimbledon’s new ground on Plough Lane in Wimbledon, which stands little more than 400 yards down the road from the site of their original ground, which was their home until 1991 – and a ground I became very familiar with in the late 1980s.

Back in the summer of 1986, I had just moved to London, and at that point in time, Wimbledon had just won promotion under Dave Bassett and were about to embark on their first ever campaign in the top tier of English football.

As a football supporter looking for a team to support week in week out, I was attracted to the idea of following an unfashionable club taking their first steps in the top division, and with accommodation sorted in South West London, I settled on following the Dons.

This was, of course, the height of the Crazy Gang era, and I took my place on the Plough Lane terraces and soaked up the intimate atmosphere while Vinnie Jones, John Fashanu and the rest delivered their particularly unique type of welcome to the big names

that arrived in SW19. In time, I would get the opportunity to follow them to Wembley in 1988 for the FA Cup final, and enjoy one of the most memorable days of my football watching life, when they beat Liverpool 1-0.

To go off on a tangent for a minute, it’s actually through watching Wimbledon that first got me involved in following St Patrick’s Athletic. On a short break in Dublin in the mid 90s, about 1996 I think, I decided to come to a Friday night game at Richmond Park for my first ever visit, a game against Home Farm Everton. As the Pats team came out to warm up, I recognised Paul Magee, a favourite player of mine when he was at Wimbledon for his whole hearted 100% attitude, and that immediately drew me towards supporting the men in red and white.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Anyway, back to the story and as time moved on, a move back up north to Lancashire in early 1991, coupled with career moves and family commitments, meant that my support became a bit distant. But I watched from afar as events unfolded over the years, and most football followers will know the story of what happened in 2002, when the club’s owners moved the club to Milton Keynes - a 2020 Season • Vol. 32 • No. 7 • St Patrick’s Athletic v Dundalk

proposed move to base the club in Dublin fell through some years earlier - and renamed them MK Dons. That prompted the original Dons fans in South West London to start up their own club called AFC Wimbledon, and they began playing in the very bottom rung of English non-league football.

After their climb back up the leagues ended in Football League status being achieved, I began looking out for the team’s results more closely again, and then in 2016 my daughter was offered a place at a London university, only a couple of days after the move back to the new stadium in Plough Lane was officially

announced. With future trips to the capital now guaranteed to take place for several years, it seemed like there was some kind of karma going on, something telling me it was time to get back properly on board with the Dons once again. I signed up to be a club member, and as soon as I made my first visit to their Kingsmeadow stadium in 2017, the vibe around the place made me feel like I'd never been away.

The homely surroundings of Kingsmeadow with its capacity of around 4000 had a real resonance of Plough Lane about it, some of the fans’ chants were still the same, and

middle aged men were wearing replica jerseys from over 30 years ago, guys I must have been standing next to on the terraces back in the 80s.

From my own selfish viewpoint, just simply thinking about the days of watching the Dons at Plough Lane makes me nostalgic about what was a good time in my life, living in Wimbledon in the late 80s. I lived in a flat that was a 15 minute walk from the ground, I met the girl who is now my wife when living there, and although not a big football fan she came with me quite regularly to home games, and also ensured that birthdays and Christmas featured gifts from the Dons club shop.

Going to Plough Lane was part of my Saturday routine, a feature of the local landscape in the area where I lived, a place I drove past going to work every day, and I really missed it when I moved away from London and up to Lancashire in the early 90s. Plough Lane may not have been the most aesthetically pleasing of places – but it was the Dons’ home.

And for those of us of a certain age who remember the old days at Plough Lane, the move back there really means the Dons are back home. But it’s not just a physical move – it’s an emotional one too. While it’s the completion of a circle, the end of a journey and the beginning of a new one in that same corner of South West London, for me, there’s more to it than that.

Following AFC Wimbledon is not just about having an interest in football and supporting 11 men kicking a ball about. The present day Dons are not just my team in the here and now, they are also my link back to the past, and some great memories and happy days of over 30 years ago.

If you investigate the origin of the old proverb ‘Home is where the heart is’, the suggestion is that its meaning is derived from the idea that a home is not just wherever we grew up – it is where we feel most at home. No matter how this proverb is interpreted, it centres around the idea that a home is not just the bricks and mortar of a building, but is somewhere that is intimately

carefree, and untroubled by the concerns and issues that aging

and increased responsibilities can bring. You might physically move away from somewhere, but emotionally there is always an attachment remaining because of good times spent there in the past.

It’s why, for me, AFC Wimbledon moving to their new ground on Plough Lane sparks emotion because it’s not just about new bricks and mortar, it’s like opening back up a book of memories of happy times spent – where I was, who I was with, what I was doing. For those reasons it’s all the more galling that due to current events I won’t be able to be in attendance at the first game back at Plough Lane as I had been looking to do for several years now. I even had the day planned out in my mind.

I was going to travel to Wimbledon on the tube, and walk to where I used to live. From there I was going to set off on the journey to

Plough Lane that I would make every other Saturday in the late 80s and recreate the whole experience once again. But instead, I will download the 100 page match programme that the club are making available free of charge to everyone via their website, and pay £10 to watch the game on the official Football League channel while sitting in my dining room. It’s not how I’d planned it, for sure, but the times we are in at the moment dictate it has to be that way.

But I’ll get there one day when all this is over, and my feelings on the day will probably be best summed up by a quote from W. Somerset Maugham’s novel called "The Moon and Sixpence", in which the central figure is a man who abandons his wife and children to pursue his desire to become an artist, and within the story, there is one passage which reads as follows: "Sometimes a man hits upon a place to which he mysteriously feels he belongs. Here is the home he sought, and he will settle amid scenes that he has never seen before, among men he has never known, as though they were familiar to him from his birth".

In the meantime, I’ll have to make do with watching the game on line on Tuesday night and when the teams run out on the pitch at around 7.40 pm, I think there is a chance that I might have something in my eye...

ST PATRICK'S ATH 1 DUNDALK 0 LIFE in football continues to be sweet for Damien Byrne despite the passage of time.

A vital central defender in St. Patrick's Athletic's surge to the head of affairs in the Opel Premier League, the 35-year-old revived memories of his stint at Drogheda where he once headed the scoring honours, by shooting down Dundalk with the only goal of a disappointing FAI Harp Lager Cup tie at Harold's Cross yesterday.

It was no more than St. Pats deserved, at least on their second-half display, when Byrne popped up in support of the attack in the 84th minute. John McDonnell curled a free from the right into the area, it was beaten away by a defender, but only to Byrne.

The Athletic captain was some 15 yards out but struck a perfect shot that was never going anywhere but wide of Alan O'Neill and into the far corner.

It wrapped up the "Man of the Match" award for Byrne and gave St. Pats their first-ever Blue Riband victory over Dundalk in 13 ties

dating back to 1952. It also sent their supporters in a large crowd wild with delight. Alas, a tiny minority of the substantial Dundalk support marred the occasion subsequently.

At the final whistle, as players on both sides shook hands, a few remarkably young idiots, some sporting Dundalk colours, other tarnishing the tradition of green and white hoops, scuffled not just with stewards but police. A firm hand and patience quelled an episode that had no place in yesterday's proceedings.

This was not a match over which any supporter was entitled to get over-excited. A strong wind blowing straight down the pitch made conditions extremely difficult but that hardly excused

some very poor patches.

As early as the 10th minute Dundalk's Paul Newe volleyed a shot off the bar with Dave Henderson beaten. Subsequently in the opening half Dundalk's effort to harness the wind were abject.

Indeed, two of the best chances fellto St. Pats and both were initiated by Joe Lawless. Paul Osam headed his cross too high in the 38th minute and, just before the interval, Lawless set Mark Ennis up for what would have been a marvellous goal.

A deft pass inside was swept up by Ennis on the run but his fiercelyhit shot was just wide.

Turmoil & Triumph Despite the League title in 1989-90, all was not well.

The Harold’s Cross exile continued as Richmond Park became a grazing ground for sheep rather than a renovated modern stadium. Financial issues came to a head in the summer of 1992 when the club was hours away from bankruptcy, only to be saved by a last-minute injection of £82,000 raised by investors and fans.

By then much of the League-winning team had been scattered to the four winds. Pat’s had finished a creditable third in the League in 1990-91, as well as winning the Leinster Senior Cup and LFA President’s Cup. 1991-92 saw a seventh place finish with a weakened side, while 1992-93 and 1993-94 saw an experimental Top Six/Bottom Six split in the League, with Pat’s in the lower section on both occasions.

By then, however, Pat’s were back at home in Richmond Park. The exile hadn’t been easy. Con Houlihan wrote that despite Harold’s Cross being “hardly three miles away, [the Pat’s] supporters were not happy. The local people were not friendly, the drink didn't taste right, the weather was colder.”

The return came against Shelbourne in December 1993 with a new Main Stand (later to be expanded) renovations to the Inchicore End and the flattening of the pitch – the old 6’3’’ slope was no more.

Patrick’s were thriving off the field too, with explayer Pat Dolan spearheading commercial drives resulting in significant investment in the club including new Chairman Tim O’Flaherty. Kerr’s squad expanded to include Eddie Gormley, Paul “Soupy” Campbell, Liam Buckley, Brian Morrisroe and Ricky O’Flaherty. At the end of the 95-96 season, Pat’s travelled to Oriel Park to exorcise the ghosts of eight years previous. Falling behind 1-0, Pat’s recovered with a Ricky O’Flaherty header and a Soupy Campbell free-kick to lift the Championship

trophy. It was the Saints’ fifth League of Ireland title but, remarkably, the first which had come playing at home in Richmond Park.

Kerr’s team fell just short of a double, losing to Shelbourne in a notorious FAI Cup final replay. Kerr left midway through the 1996-97 season to take up a post as technical director of the FAI, with chief executive Pat Dolan a surprise appointment as manager. The Saints finished in fifth place that season but key signings including youth internationals Colin Hawkins and Trevor Molloy saw Pat’s in a dogfight with old rivals Shelbourne for the 1997-98 League title.

More in hope than expectation, thousands of Pat’s fans travelled to Buckley Park in Kilkenny for the last game of the season. Shels needed only a draw away to Dundalk to seal the title but, remarkably, lost 2-1. With word passing through to Kilkenny, up stepped Pat’s captain Eddie Gormley to score a deflected goal ten minutes from time, giving Pat’s a 2-1 win and their seventh League championship.

Similar was to follow in 1998-99 as Pat’s, now managed by Liam Buckley, and Cork City quickly emerged from the pack. Pat’s defeated Cork on all three occasions and went on to beat Bray Wanderers in the final game of the season to win the title for the first time at Richmond Park. 19992000 saw wins in the FAI Super Cup and Leinster Senior Cup, and a mediocre sixth place League finish but, without doubt, Pat’s were clearly Ireland’s team of the nineties.

With so much League success, European football featured heavily in the nineties. All four ties saw defeats but there were creditable displays against Celtic and Slovan Bratislava, along with a 5-1 loss to Dinamo Bucharest and a 10-0 mauling from Zimbru of Moldova.
