THIS YEAR MARKS THE 157TH YEAR of helping the young men of this great city receive an excellent and practical education; one which forms them into quality young men of tomorrow who are wellequipped to become the future leaders of our country and Church.

Saint Patrick High School continues to be a leader in Catholic education in Chicagoland from our state-of-the-art facilities to our steady and strong enrollment. Our students earn college scholarship offers at great universities across the country, including a record number 14 Evans Scholars, which proudly leads the nation.

Saint Patrick High School—a long-time front line supporter of the Illinois Kids Campaign—is excited by the passage of the Invest in Kids Act signed by Governor Rauner on August 31, 2017. The Act is designed to provide up to $75 million a year in scholarships for qualifying students attending private schools in Illinois. The legislation represents a major step forward that will help create more equity in school funding throughout Illinois, and for the first time provide real school choice for students and their families.

We will continue to closely follow developments on this important front and keep you informed.

We are currently in the quiet phase of a $7.5M campaign to raise funds for our endowment and the new STEAM program.

Mulcrone

Father Tom Mulcrone retired as the Chicago Fire Department (CFD) chaplain, a role he served for almost 30 years, this past June. He was only the third official chaplain in the history of the CFD. An Archdiocesan priest, he was appointed by Cardinal Joseph Bernardin in 1987. One of eight children in Resurrection Parish, he attended Quigley South and Loyola University before entering St. Mary of the Lake Seminary. Father Mulcrone plans to continue in his role as chaplain at St. Mary of Providence, a facility serving people with disabilities.

Pat Gaughan ’83 is President of Arro Corporation, attended Indiana University as an Evans Scholar and obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Finance before going on to receive his MBA from Loyola University in Chicago. Gaughan, who resides in Elmhurst with his wife, Lisa, has four sons, remains active in the Evans Scholar program as a director of the Western Golf Association.

I am proud to welcome Fr. Tom Mulcrone and Pat Gaughan ’83 to our Board of Trustees. They will be a great addition to an awesome Board of Trustees. My sincere appreciation for all the time, talent and treasure of our Board of Trustees. I would also like to welcome Fr. Dominic Clemente ’08 as our new chaplain at St. Pat’s. Fr. Dominic resides at St. Edward Parish where he is an Associate Pastor.

As I proudly serve in my 51st year of service at this great Institution, I want to share part of a parent letter with you that I received recently:

“ Saint Patrick High School allowed me to know that when my son walks out the door every morning he was going to another family. He was going to a place where he was cared about and in a safe environment.

He entered into a place of belonging and was provided an outstanding education. Thank you so much for letting me sleep a little easier.”

It is a pleasure to once again address the Saint Patrick community with regards to all that is occurring at Saint Patrick High School.

The number of course offerings by 11%

Since the 2016-17 school year concluded in May, Saint Patrick has been a place of endless activity!

The school year is off to a terrific start thanks in large part to the outstanding work done by our faculty, staff, and administration between the end of the last school year and today.

Between March and July, we hired 10 new faculty members. These new faculty members went through a rigorous, 3-round interview process with our administrative team, department chairs, and in some cases our own students. These outstanding educators, combined with our already incredible faculty and staff, will help our students develop the necessary analytical, critical, and life skills necessary to succeed upon graduating from Saint Patrick High School.

We completed the third year of our Vision 2020 strategic plan. A comprehensive look at our accomplishments can be seen online, but some of the highlights include:

The number of clubs and activities by 18%

The number of teachers with advanced degrees by 25% Since 2012-13, our overall ACT scores have increased 8%.

INCubator Entrepreneurship program successfully launched in 2016-17.

Dandaway DCS won the inaugural Innovation Idea Award. Enrollment is up 23% in the class for 2017-18.

Our STEAM program officially launched this summer with 22 students enrolled in our Intro to STEAM class. The program “strives to give all students increased opportunities to develop various disciplines steeped in creativity, critical thinking, and project-based learning thereby developing 21st century innovators and responsible researchers, educators, stewards, and leaders prepared to face the challenges of the world today and in the future.” It is our vision that Saint Patrick High School offer a holistic STEAM educational curriculum that will be STEM accredited by the 2019–20 school year. In addition, 15% of the class of 2021 students will select the STEAM track. By 2022, SPHS will be known as the first Chicagoland Catholic school with

The Brullo Family Science Center officially opened to our students and faculty on September 19. The space provides an opportunity to expand the current STEAM program and curriculum.

We are grateful to the Brullo family for their commitment to the project and Saint Patrick High School!

In our inaugural year of providing an RCIA program to our school community, we had five students who were initiated into the Church through the Sacrament of Confirmation.

As part of our 2020 Strategic Plan, service is a component that is being addressed and supported. In response to that, each member of the Class of 2018 is participating in a service project as part of the Religion curriculum.

As I conclude this letter, special congratulations goes out to our boys’ soccer team as they finished 4th in the IHSA state 2A Boys Soccer Tournament! It was only the fourth time in school history that a team has placed at the state tournament— ’03-Water Polo (2nd), ’06-Baseball (2nd), ’09-Volleyball (4th).

I continue to be excited about the future of Saint Patrick High School because of all the efforts of our faculty, staff, and students as evidenced by the noted remarkable results.

Shamrocks road to the Final Four There was a lot of excitement in the halls of Saint Patrick High School this fall as the soccer team’s record-breaking season led the squad to its first-ever trip to the state finals. The Shamrock’s final four run started with a 4-1 win over Elmwood Park High School in the regional semifinals with the team battling back from a 0-1 deficit with 22 minutes left in regulation.

Saint Patrick went on to become back to back regional champions with a 6-1 win over Payton College Prep advancing to the sectional semifinals with a chance to play for the first sectional championship in school history. After defeating Northside College Prep 3-1 in the semifinals and defending state champ Latin School of Chicago 3-0 in the finals, the Shamrocks went on to defeat Freeport 2-1 in the super-sectional finals to earn a trip to state.

In their first ever IHSA State Final Tournament appearance, the Shamrocks lost a close 1-0 game to eventual state champion, Solorio Academy, and fell to Wheaton Academy 5-1 in the third place game. Prior to the tournament, students lined the halls to give the soccer team a proper send off and a pep rally was held the following Monday to celebrate the team’s 4th place finish in the Class 2A state

Lasallian Garden dedicated in memory of Ronald G. Kapolnek ’76 On Thursday, October 12, the family of Ronald G. Kapolnek ’76, Saint Patrick Board of Trustees, administration and friends gathered for the dedication of the Ronald G. Kapolnek Lasallian Garden. The plaque placed in the garden simply, yet beautifully, states: “The garden represents Ron’s love and passion for Saint Patrick High School.

May the flags fly high in his honor.”

Father Dominic Clemente ’08 led guests in a Prayer of Blessing and Dedication including readings from Ron’s wife, Jean Kapolnek, and their four children, Eileen, Danielle, James ’11 and Kate as well as former Saint Patrick Board Chairman, Bill McManaman ’65.

When asked how Ron would’ve felt about the Lasallian Garden being named in his honor, Mrs. Kapolnek said, “He would not have liked the fuss made about him but would have loved that it was the garden dedicated in his name.” Ron loved to garden and flying the

USA and Cubs flags and, as many around Saint Patrick know, was a fanatic about not letting the flags get discolored or frayed.

“Our families are very grateful for the dedication of the garden given Ron’s passion of and selfless service to St. Pat’s,” Mrs. Kapolnek said. “Ron believed his lifetime successes were a result of his Catholic upbringing and education obtained at Our Lady of Victory, Saint Patrick High School and Loyola University.”

The Kapolnek and Rountree families have many alumni of Saint Patrick including Ron’s only son, James, who believes, “Choosing Saint Patrick for my high school education was a natural choice. I was born to be a Shamrock, just as my Dad and uncles were.” He added, “I’m honored that my father’s legacy will live on at St. Pat’s through his academic and athletic achievements as a student, his service on the board and his dedication to faith.”

Father Dominic Clemente ’08 added as Chaplain What does it mean to you to be a Shamrock?

Tell us about your new role with Saint Patrick. What does it mean to be asked to serve in this capacity? In what other ways are you involved with the school and students?

I’ve been asked to serve as chaplain to the faculty and students at St. Pat’s. This is truly a great honor for me as both a priest of the Archdiocese and as a Shamrock. St. Pat’s was my home for four unforgettable years and now that I get to come home as chaplain is heartwarming in the truest sense of the word. As chaplain I have the great grace to celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for the students and faculty almost every Friday and I will be celebrating a number of the all-school Masses. I get to speak to the different classes on the faith, priesthood, Church teachings, and other topics. Finally, I tell the students if they ever need to chat or need help I’m here for them just as much as their coaches and teachers.

What is your favorite part about working with current students at Saint Patrick?

What is the most challenging?

I’m an ’08 grad which means I’m not that far removed from high school or the challenges that come with being a teenager.

I remember the struggles and joys that are associated with this age group so I can relate a lot to the students and what they’re going through. I’m a product of a good Catholic education, I grew up in a lower middle class family on the Northwest Side, I struggled with the faith and I’ve had girlfriends so I can easily relate to these guys. Being able to meet the students and share my experiences and how Jesus played a significant role in my life is the best part of being a chaplain.

The challenge is knowing that the culture and social media has changed a lot in the last ten years and these teens are experiencing things I haven’t, so being able to relate the faith and the importance of personal relationships is hard. That is something I plan to focus on a lot in my homilies and catechesis.

I love being a Shamrock! As associate pastor at St. Ed’s, I meet a ton of Shamrocks and we always greet each other warmly once we realize our deep connection through St. Pat’s. Being a Shamrock is more than a title or a cute nostalgic name.

Being a Shamrock makes you part of a huge brotherhood that never fades.

How do you feel things have changed most since graduating from Saint Patrick?

When I was a student at St. Pat’s, we never talked about vocations. The Archdiocese vocation director came (maybe) once a year and there was a poster hanging by the door to the Belmont lot. Other than that we never heard about vocations to the brothers or priesthood. Now, we have a chaplain (me) and St. Pat’s has the most students of all the Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese Quigley Scholars program (a high school priesthood discernment group). That’s a huge improvement! It’s all thanks to the dedicated theology faculty and campus ministry team.

How did your education at Saint Patrick most influence your decision to join the priesthood?

I struggled with my faith a lot in high school. I disagreed with the Church on almost everything and I only went to Mass because I was involved in something (lector, choir, Eucharistic Minister, etc.). St. Pat’s taught me the faith and my dedicated theology teachers were patient with me; however, it was the example of good priests at my home parish (St. Celestine) who opened my heart to consider God’s will for my life to be a priest. That is what I hope to bring to the students now at St. Pat’s. I hope they can see how much joy I have in my heart that comes out of my priesthood so that they will consider, even for a second, that God may be calling them.

If you could share one message with current or prospective students about Saint Patrick, what would it be?

To current students I say they need to make St. Pat’s their home and know that the faculty, staff, and administration care for them more than they will ever realize.

My best teachers were the men and women who drove me crazy the most (and I did the same to them). When I thought they were trying to ruin my life, they were actually forming me into the man I am today. Once you make 5900 Belmont your second home, you will be able to get though anything.

To incoming students, they need to see St. Pat’s as a brotherhood and not just as a stepping stone to college. Too many teens and parents view high school as a doorway to college and, while that’s true and important, it’s not the end all be all. I have my Master’s Degree and I was Cum Laude.

None of that matters and I wouldn’t trade any of my degrees for the brotherhood I gained at St. Pat’s.

Shamrocks enjoy 22nd Annual Mother/Son Dance On Sunday, October 29, Saint Patrick mothers and sons were invited to enjoy dinner and dancing at the 22nd Annual Mother/Son Dinner Dance. For the second year, the event was held at The Estate by Gene & Georgetti in Rosemont. Portraits were taken of each mother/son couple as part of this enjoyable evening.

Saint Patrick welcomes Class of 2021 with Freshman Mass & Breakfast Saint Patrick High School welcomed the Class of 2021 and their families including moms, dads, grandparents and siblings to a Freshman Mass and Breakfast on Sunday, September 10. Over 250 guests celebrated the annual mass and enjoyed a complimentary breakfast buffet on a very special Grandparent’s Day. Fr. Dominic Clemente ‘08 presided over the mass in the Lowell I. Stahl Cultural Centre.

The Class of 2021 includes 168 freshmen from 66 different schools and 19 Legacies with 47% of the class scoring in the upper 25% on the Placement Exam.

Murphy ‘18 named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist Saint Patrick senior Conor Murphy has been selected as a semifinalist for a National Merit Scholarship.

The Chicago resident is one of just 16,000 students from 22,000 high schools across the country to reach this stage. Murphy (Saint Cornelius) emerged as a semifinalist from a pool that originally included 1.6 million entrants.

From the group of semifinalists, 7,500 students will be selected as winners of a Merit Scholarship Award. The announcement of the winners will begin in April 2018.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the program by taking the preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

The recognition is the latest in a long line of academic achievements for Murphy, a Saint Patrick honors student who recorded a perfect score on the ACT last year. Along with these achievements, Conor is a varsity cross country runner, the first chair for the alto saxophone section of the Honors Jazz Band, captain of the Academic Team and a member of the Spanish and Book Discussion Clubs.

Fine Arts department presents ‘Peter and the Starcatcher’ This Fall, the Theatre Department produced the comedy, Peter and the Starcatcher. The story centered around a set of lost orphan boys, featuring senior Anthony Pasquale as Peter. The boys get caught up in an adventure surrounding the magical dust that falls from shooting stars, called starstuff.

They have several run-ins with pirates, the most notorious being Black Stache, played by senior Aidan Courtney. Along their journey, Peter meets a young starcatcher named Molly, played by Trinity High School senior, Renee Freville.

They all wind up on an island where we find out that the whole story leads into the famous story of Peter Pan. With incredible audiences every night, this was a beloved take on a wellknown story that celebrated the child within us all.

Art students enjoy Chicago culture with class field trips Art students at Saint Patrick have taken field trips this fall to the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago Cultural Center and Museum of Contemporary Art. The trip to the Art Institute included a full day in the galleries starting with a docent-led tour of the American Galleries and a guided activity in the Education Center. Students took their first-hand observations and drawings back to the classroom as they developed a portfolio art piece.

The visit to the Chicago Cultural Center included a docent-led tour highlighting the historical significance of the building, architectural contributions and features

throughout. Following the visit in the “People’s Palace” students went to Millennium Park to view the tire sculptures of Chakaia Booker and Anish Kapoor’s Cloud Gate.

Back in the studio, they created a 2D and 3D artwork inspired by their experiential learning opportunity.

Finally, the visit to the Museum of Contemporary Art included the Takashi Murakami’s exhibit: The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg where students viewed the show and other exhibits on a self-guided visit. In addition to seeing the work of Murakami, the goal of the visit was to expand individual influences and opportunities.

Honors Choir performs to seniors on Veterans Day

On Friday, November 10, the Honors Chorus traveled to Norwood Crossing Retirement Home to perform at their annual Veterans Day Ceremony. This year marks the fifth consecutive performance by Saint Patrick musicians. The students enjoy hearing the stories and service history of the resident Veterans, and are warmly received in performance. This year’s selections included the hymns/songs from each branch of the US Military, America the Beautiful, the Illinois State Song, and the Battle Cry of Freedom.

STEAM Program progresses with start of 2017–18 school year

Brullo Family Science Center dedicated to enhance new STEAM Program On Tuesday, September 19, Saint Patrick Board of Trustees, alumni, supporters, faculty and staff gathered for the Brullo Family Science Center Dedication. The evening was a celebration of the new home to the school’s STEAM program and a show of gratitude to Robert ’66 & Kathleen Brullo for their generosity in helping to make the state-of-the art learning space possible.

The Saint Patrick administration is happy with the space and the opportunity it provides to expand the current STEAM curriculum – and are grateful to the Brullo family for their commitment to the project and Saint Patrick High School. “Without the Brullo family generosity, the space itself doesn’t happen” says principal, Jon Baffico. “We are forever indebted to their willingness to give our kids the opportunity they deserve and should be able to experience,” he added, “I believe it speaks to the impact the school had on Bob for many years.”

According to Brullo, when the initial Robotics project morphed into the STEAM program, he asked how he could help make it more robust. Brullo, a longtime 3M executive who attended IIT and started his career as a chemical engineer, knows the struggle his company had to get enough scientists and engineers over the years. He knew the STEAM program was a great opportunity to offer curriculum that encourages students to look at and excel in a career in science and technology. “If we do it right,” he says after traveling internationally for 25 years, “our students will be able to compete on a world stage.”

With the completion of the Brullo Family Science Center and the first Introduction to STEAM class this past summer prior to the start of the 2017–18 school year, Saint Patrick’s STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) program is off to a great start!

INCubatoredu Entrepreneurship Program started in 2016–17 very well. “When you have a great idea/invention, you need to figure out how to market and sell it,” he said.

In his remarks at the Dedication Ceremony, Brullo spoke about the importance of a strong family unit and how he, like many Saint Patrick students, comes from a solid middle class family.

He sees Shamrocks, past and present, as one big family and wants current students to have the opportunity to succeed. “My family made sacrifices to send me to St. Pat’s for a Catholic education,” he said, “I wouldn’t be where I am today without it.”

The Dedication Ceremony included the unveiling of the Brullo Family Science Center sign, a blessing and a plaque dedicating the space “to the loving memory of Robert’s parents Ralph and Vicky Brullo who were determined, in spite of economic constraints, to provide him with a Saint Patrick education.”

Twenty-two students, made up of incoming freshmen and sophomores, took a 4-week summer course as an introduction to the program and its different pathways.

Starting with the Class of 2021, students are eligible to begin taking required and elective courses toward a four-year track in Science/Technology/Engineering, Arts or Mathematics.

In addition to taking courses geared toward their chosen pathway, students have an opportunity to join STEAM-related clubs, such as Robotics, Coding, Math Team and Art Club as well as connect with Alumni using a similar model to Saint Patrick’s INCubator entrepreneurship program. Students also have access to real life experiences including field trips, leadership opportunities and classes focused on real world issues and skills.

Another important key to the success of Saint Patrick’s STEAM program was the ability to transform traditional classrooms into a place that encourages a student-centered, collaborative environment with a modern lab space where students of all disciplines can better implement scientific inquiries and experiments. The Brullo Family Science Center was created to be a flexible space teachers and students can grow into for years to come.

“We’ve always had a great athletic program and the Lowell I. Stahl Family Theatre was a huge addition seventeen years ago,” Brullo said. The addition of the STEAM program and Brullo Family Science Center, he believes, “is another thing to differentiate our school.”

Senior Night FOR THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR, the

football team opened their season at Soldier Field vs St. Rita on Friday, August 25. After the Shamrock’s thrilling 47-44 victory last year, St. Rita evened the score with a 49-21 win in the season opener.

Prior to the last home game of the season, Shamrock varsity seniors and parents were honored for their commitment to the football program over the past four years. Seniors presented their moms with a flower and dads received a Shamrock cap. Each family was greeted by Head Coach Adam Guerra and Saint Patrick principal, Jon Baffico, before taking a family photo on the sidelines.

Saint Patrick (2-7), in its first year under Head Coach Adam Guerra, defeated Joliet Catholic 30-29 in dramatic fashion for its first victory of the season. Down 29-23 with less than five minutes to go, St. Pat’s went on a long 4-minute drive to take the lead. The Shamrocks defeated Marian Catholic 31-14 a week later to win its home opener under the lights at Triton College.

Senior Joey Lombardi led the team with 39 catches, 508 yards and four touchdowns and junior Xavier Saldana added 28 catches, 355 yards and two touchdowns. Senior quarterback Brett Rosenbusch was 96-175 with 1,088 yards for 11 touchdowns.

Junior George Ohanessian led the running game with 525 yards, 125 carries and four touchdowns while senior Joey Solak rushed for 157 yards, 49 carries and two touchdowns.

The Shamrocks had five All-Conference players: senior Joey Immordino, senior Lombardi, senior Marty Ryan, junior Anthony Manaves and junior Jack O’Rourke.

THE SHAMROCK GOLF TEAM started off the

season playing well at the Saint Laurence Invite where senior James Leane shot 77 and senior Will Ferraris shot 78. The team also played well at the Nazareth Invite with Ferraris earning a medal for his 81.

The Shamrocks also recorded wins during the regular season over De LaSalle, Ridgewood, Montini, Leyden, Latin and Northridge Prep. In the post season, the Shamrocks shot a team best 318 at Regionals led by 5th place Medalist Leane’s 75 and junior Mike Donovan’s 76. Sophomore Jake Bednarek and senior Jack Murphy also shot well enough to advance making this the third year in a row the team advanced at least three golfers to sectionals.

The team’s Most Improved Player was Bednarek, a Medalist at the Salt Creek Invitational, who qualified for Sectionals after winning a 5-hole sudden death playoff by parring the 5th hole.

The Shamrock Pride Award went to Donovan and Leane, a three-time Sectional qualifier and two-time medalist at regionals, who has played varsity since his sophomore year, was Most Outstanding Player.

The Freshman/Sophomore team finished with a 9-3 record and their most wins in the past four years, including victories over conference rivals Notre Dame and Saint Viator.

THE CROSS COUNTRY TEAM opened their

season August 30 hosting 25 schools and nearly 800 runners at Schiller Woods. Senior captains Brian Kieca and Peter Sakkos led the way with 6 of the 7 runners achieving personal bests at the Shamrock Invitational.

Saint Patrick went on to finish sixth out of eighteen teams at the St. Ignatius Connelly Invite at Lewis University on September 2 as runners continued to post personal best times at a meet famous for its behemoth hill 150 yards from the start line.

For the third straight year the varsity team qualified for the IHSA State Sectionals. This year’s team was led by senior captains Sakkos and Sam Zabielski. In addition, fellow senior runner Conor Murphy qualified alongside sophomore Brandon Banda.

Freshman Sergio Mendieta ran a team fastest 16:52 at Sectionals and was the lone Shamrock to qualify for the IHSA State Finals in Peoria where he finished 179th for Saint Patrick and 5th among only 22 freshmen to qualify.

The Freshman/Sophomore team showed great promise for future seasons. The highlight of their season was finishing 3rd place as a team at the Shamrock Invitational.

THE SOCCER TEAM STARTED OFF STRONG AND NEVER LOOKED BACK as they made

their way to the first soccer sectional championship in school history.

Saint Patrick finished the regular season with a record of 18-4-2 (7-1-1 in conference play).

The 18 regular season wins surpassed the school record set in 1998-99. The Shamrocks scored 110 goals this year, an average of 3.55 per game, and allowed just 34 goals or 1.1 per game, both school records. Forward Chris Modrzejewski, the Shamrocks points leader, also set a school record with 34 goals.

Six varsity players, the most in school history, were named to the All-Conference team: senior Modrzejewski, senior Chris Troyke, sophomore Sebastian Modrzejewski,

sophomore Jonathan Rodriguez, sophomore LuisAngel Saucedo and freshman Joshua Torres. Saucedo was named to the All-Sectional team and Modrzejewski, the Shamrock’s first All-State selection since 2002, was selected as Co-Conference Player of the Year while head coach Kyle McClure was named ESCC Coach of the Year.

The Shamrocks went 23-6-2 overall including postseason play and won more games this year than the last three seasons combined.

Saint Patrick finished the season ranked #19 in the Chicagoland Soccer Final 50 poll.

For the third straight year, all levels improved their record. The future of Shamrock soccer is very bright!

Seniors help plan service projects as part of Saint Patrick curriculum

As a Catholic School in the Lasallian tradition students are called to faith, service and community. Service hours have always been a requirement at Saint Patrick but are now part of the new Social Justice class introduced to the curriculum this year.

As an individual or small group, seniors are asked to create, plan, and implement a service project around a community need which falls under the seven themes of Catholic Social Teaching (Life and Dignity of the Human Person, Call to Family, Community and Participation, Rights and Responsibilities, Option for the Poor and Vulnerable, The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers, Solidarity and Care for God’s Creation).

The hope is that by putting their faith into action, seniors become examples of servant leaders to the greater school community, bring the community closer together by serving alongside each other, and graduate Saint Patrick with an understanding that service is a life-long commitment.

From November 1st - May 1st there are approximately 70 service projects for freshmen, sophomores and juniors to participate in and meet their yearly service hour requirement. This fall, student service projects included volunteering at a food pantry, spending time with seniors at a nursing home, cleaning neighborhood parks and serving dinner to local firemen.

Every year Saint Patrick’s Lasallian Youth host a Thanksgiving Food Drive and collect nonperishable food items for the food pantry at Saint Vincent DePaul Parish in Lincoln Park.

This year students collected 4,000 pounds of food and delivered it to the pantry. The food was distributed to the local poor throughout the holiday season and made a real difference in their lives.

After Thanksgiving, students participate in the Christmas Toy Drive for the Adopt-A-Kid Program. Each year, the school receives 120 names and buys each child two gifts. The gifts are delivered and distributed the second week of December.

Five inducted into Shamrock Hall of Fame Five men joined Saint Patrick’s prestigious class of athletes during a Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Saturday, November 4.

Dan Farrell ’66 was an All-Conference Area and All-American co-captain for the Shamrocks selected to the 1965 All-CPL team on both offense and defense as a tackle. The Shamrocks were undefeated Conference Champions during Dan’s junior and senior years in 1964 and 1965. After graduating in 1966, Dan went on to play at St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana on a football scholarship. He was a starting offensive tackle and earned three varsity letters in his collegiate career. A retired director of sales from Newlyweds Foods, Dan lives in Oak Brook with his wife, Jay, and has two children Mike and Meagan.

Sam Maniscalco ’07 was a three-time All-Conference, All-Area and All-State basketball star and two-time member of the ESCC all-league team. Maniscalco led the conference in scoring each of his last two years and was a 2007 first-team All-State pick by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association. He went on to play Division I basketball at Bradley University where he earned his bachelor’s degree in sports communications. He set the school and Missouri Valley Conference record for the most games ever played (105) at Bradley by a 3-year player. He also played for the University of Illinois in 2011–12 while pursuing a Master’s Degree.

Chris Mroz ’02, a two-time All-Conference and honorable mention All-State point guard, led the 2001-2002 basketball team to a Conference Championship. Mroz is the Shamrocks all-time assist leader and was named one of the top 50 players in Chicago his senior year by the Chicago Sun-Times and one of the top 5 point guards in the Chicagoland Area. Mroz played at Bradley University and Missouri-St. Louis and is now in his ninth season as head basketball coach at Ridgewood High School in Norridge.

Joe Fagiano ’07, the 2006 State Champion in wrestling, was a two-time Conference Champion, two-time All-State and ESCC Wrestler of the Year. He was the 2016 NCAA Division II Champion, West Region Athlete of the Year, Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Athlete of the Year and 2016 California Baptist University Male Athlete of the Year and is a two-time NCAA Division I qualifier. Fagiano has his bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and Masters of Business Administration from California Baptist University.

James Ridgeway ’07 was a two-time IHSA State Champion in the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard backstroke and a four-time All-State selection for Swimming and Water Polo. He won Conference Swimmer of the Year and Conference Player of the Year in Water Polo. A University of Michigan Scholar-Athlete, Ridgeway was a two-time NCAA All-American and threetime All-Big Ten Conference. He was an USS Junior National Team member and 2012 Olympic Trials Qualifier. Ridgeway, a member of the National Honor Society and four-year Honor Roll student at Saint Patrick, is currently a medical student at Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Class of ’67 Returns to Saint Patrick for 50th Reunion Saint Patrick High School welcomed back the Class of 1967 for its 50th Reunion on Saturday, October 28. Alumni and guests attended Mass, presided over by Class of ’67 Alum Father Jack Conley, at the school prior to enjoying cocktails and dinner with their classmates. After dinner, attendees were shown a video montage of their four years at Saint Patrick and given tours of the school.

Anthony Bertuca, Michael Christoi and Timothy Cunningham were presented with the Shamrock Pride Award for their dedication to Saint Patrick High School, loyal volunteerism, and attendance at many alumni special events. Kevin Calkins and the Reunion committee were also acknowledged for their hard work bringing over 60 alumni from the Class of ’67 back together for this year’s reunion.

Anthony Bertuca, a member of the Shamrock Hall of Fame and one of five Saint Patrick football players to compete at the professional level, has been actively involved in furthering the mission of Saint Patrick for many years. In addition to attending yearly alumni events, reunions, dinners, and outings, Tony has committed a countless number of hours to reconnecting former Shamrocks to the Saint Patrick family and went above and beyond in his efforts to reach out to former classmates as a member of the 50th Reunion committee.

Michael Christoi has generously supported the Saint Patrick family, providing financial and in-kind contributions, for the past 17 years and was instrumental in the planning and design of the state-ofthe-art Ettore L. Giovannetti Health and Wellness Center. He also helps plan and sponsor annual events throughout the year.

Timothy Cunningham has been actively supporting Saint Patrick on a yearly basis since 1981. Tim’s financial contributions to the school have provided three decades of Shamrocks the assistance to acquire the same education, values and experience he was able to enjoy. Tim has sponsored and attended numerous alumni-related events over the years and truly feels the core foundation of our mission is something that should be cherished.

Alumni celebrate All-Inclusive Class Reunion Over 250 alumni and guests celebrated the brotherhood of Saint Patrick at the All-Inclusive Class Reunion on Saturday, November 4 with special recognition to the Classes of ’47, ’52, ’57 (60-year reunion), ’62, ’72, ’77, ’82, ’87, ’92 (25-year reunion), ’97, ’02, ’07 (10-year reunion) and ’12.

James A. Rafferty ’72 (Jim) has shown incredible support to the school over the years. As a member of the Alumni Board, Jim has volunteered countless hours of his time attending and working at numerous events. Jim’s attitude and passion for the Lasaillan Mission of Saint Patrick is infectious and felt everywhere he goes.

Daniel K. Geraghty ’77 has been on staff at Saint Patrick High School for the past nine years serving as a guidance counselor and Director of Student Services. Not only does Dan work with current Shamrocks on a daily basis making sure they’re on track to reach their full potential and get the most out of their four years at Saint Patrick, he gives generously to the Lasallian Mission on a yearly basis.

Class Challenge One way to help close the gap between the cost to educate a student and tuition is to “sponsor” a student. A benefactor who makes a gift of $1,500 will be matched with a current Saint Patrick student. Donors may wish to satisfy this requirement with a one-time gift or a $125 per month donation.

Each fall and spring, students show their appreciation to their benefactors by writing letters about their coursework, extracurricular activities and other involvement throughout the year. All benefactors with gifts of $1,500 or more are also invited to attend a Benefactors’ Luncheon on April 27, 2018.

Henry Schueler remembered on 10-year anniversary

What is an Endowment?

In an effort to leave a lasting legacy, Saint Patrick High School provides benefactors an opportunity to establish a financial aid endowment. An endowment may be made in honor of, in gratitude to, or in memory of a loved one. To date, 45 benefactors have established fully funded endowments in the amount of $100,000 with the specific intent to help students with annual financial aid in perpetuity.

The educational mission of Saint Patrick High School and the 330 plus years of the Christian Brothers heritage has always been centered around service to the underprivileged. Consequently, many benefactors establish an endowment to provide for students who wouldn’t otherwise be able to attend Saint Patrick High School. Often times the benefactor enters into a 3–5 year pledge commitment to Saint Patrick High School in order to satisfy the amount of $100,000.

THE HENRY SCHUELER 41 & 9 FOUNDATION was started in 2008 in loving memory of Henry (“Hank”) Schueler, a freshman at Saint Patrick in December 2007 when he lost his battle to an infection caused by acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).

The primary goal of the Foundation, which includes Hank’s football and baseball jersey numbers 41 & 9 in its name, is to provide funding toward innovative, leading edge research while the funds raised were also used to set up an endowment for a Saint Patrick student athlete who best exemplifies his enthusiasm for life, athletic competition and academic excellence.

By establishing the endowment, the foundation, founded by Matthew Schueler, Hank’s father, hopes to financially assist students with a scholarship who play either baseball or football (or often both) and demonstrate Hank’s leadership and strength of character, allowing his memory to forever remain a member of the Saint Patrick community.

“Despite the short time Hank spent as a student at St. Pat’s, he was always made to feel like an important part of the Shamrock family,” says Schueler. Hank chose St. Pat’s prior to being diagnosed with leukemia in early November 2006 after attending an Open House. “He sensed he belonged at St. Pat’s and the ensuing 13 months confirmed that to be correct.”

No matter the separation he will always remain our son, and he will always remain a Shamrock.”

The family says they will never forget on the night of Hank’s wake at St. Mary of the Woods every member of the Shamrock basketball team stood in line for hours to pay their respects, and as his father noted, “Hank didn’t play basketball!”

On the day of his funeral, he added, “the entire Saint Patrick football team stood in line escorting the funeral procession as it made its way from St. Mary’s to the cemetery. What a brotherhood!”

“Hank wanted us to find out why leukemia happened to him so we could prevent it from happening to other kids and we have made great strides in doing so through the work we sponsor at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital,” Schueler said. He feels Hank would be equally thrilled to know he will always be remembered at St. Pat’s.

Once a benefactor establishes an endowment with an initial gift amount of $10,000 or more a student is assigned to the benefactor. This student will continue with the benefactor until graduation as long as the student maintains academic integrity and is a good citizen. Endowment benefactors continue to contribute toward their established endowment each year.

Once the endowment reaches $100,000, the donor will be acknowledged with a plaque on the Financial Aid Endowment Wall and be invited to a formal Dedication Ceremony held at the school.

Keeping Up with the Shamrocks Walter J. Crane ’47 (Arlington Heights, IL) says his wife, Mary, has Alzheimer’s, but they’ve never been happier. He is involved in the Catholic community at Luther Village where they live, and says it’s a wonderful place with great activities. He has been a Deacon since 1989. His physical health is not bad, says it only hurts when he moves, so his wife tells him not to move! He says they are blessed abundantly!

Howard A. Pettinger ’57 (Palatine, IL) says he is doing fine. He coordinates semi-annual lunches for St. Ferdinand’s Class of 1953, as well as quarterly lunches for LaSalle National Bank employees and retirees from 1961 through 1990. He is a Eucharist minister and bereavement minister at St. Thomas of Villanova Parish in Palatine. He volunteers at St. Pat’s and Northwest Community Hospital.

John A. Wiatr ’57 (Red Bud, IL) retired in 2014 after 31 years as an Associate Professor of Political Science at Southwestern Illinois College in Belleville, Illinois.

James J. Serritella ’61 (Laytonsville, MD) just published a book, The Journey Through Cancer, How to Lose 25 Pounds Without Diet or Exercise and Be Cancer Free in 8 Months. The book is based on his personal experience after being diagnosed with lung cancer, and the road he and his wife, Betty, journeyed through the diagnosis, treatment and recovery of cancer, and the lessons they learned along the way. Ronald H. Krapa ’62 (Tucson, AZ) is enjoying retirement. He is looking forward to his oldest granddaughter’s graduation in May from West Point. He and his wife, Christine, have six other grandchildren ages 3 to 19.

Timothy J. Artman ’67 (Arlington Heights, IL) says he is in generally good health, still practicing architecture, and hoping to continue for many years to come.

Jack Cloherty ’67 (Bethesda, MD) is enjoying his recent retirement from covering national news in Washington, DC. He worked for NBC for 30 years and ABC for 7 years. He is working on a book with his son, Colin, who played in the NFL for 4 years, which will focus on his experiences and NFL safety issues. He has two grandchildren and loves spending time with them. He also loves to get out to concerts and ballgames, especially when the Cubs come to town!

Rev. John R. Conley C.P. ’67 (Chicago, IL) currently lives at the Passionist’s School of Theology in Hyde Park. He has served as pastor, campus minister and vocations director, mostly preaching missions and retreats. He enjoyed giving a retreat for the LaSalle Christian Brothers in Philadelphia, and realized the great pride he has as a St. Pat’s grad and Brothers Boy! Robert F. Cotter ’67 (Clearwater, FL) and his wife, Kathy, have been married for 46 years. They have two sons and five grandchildren, and are involved with all their lives. He has been retired for two years and is enjoying it. He plays golf, reads often, and tends to his garden.

Albert Ferrari Jr. ’67 (Downers Grove, IL) and his wife, Corinne, celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary. They have three sons, two who are married with children. His father is 95 and still remembers the Shamrock football games and the team spaghetti dinner at their apartment. He has had a lengthy career in the electronics business. He and his wife are still very active and healthy, and just bought a small fixer-upper cottage in Wisconsin where they hope to spend a lot of time with family and friends.

John T. Flood ’67 (Morton Grove, IL) is healthy, happy, and getting younger every year!

Michael S. Giambrone ’67 (LaGrange, IL) has a small company that sells and services data collection equipment to all the McDonalds’ restaurants in the United States and Canada. His company also does online sales for municipalities around Chicago and digital printing. He is co-partner in another company that manufactures parking equipment which allows users to enter and exit garages using their smart phones. He has been in a very happy 26-year relationship with the most wonderful woman, Sheila Musolino. She is CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities and an incredible cook. His nephew, Sean Giambrone, (son of David Giambrone ’71) plays the young man Adam in the comedy The Goldbergs on ABC. He is looking forward to retiring in about three years.

Frank C. Ingo ’67 (Saint Petersburg, FL) is President of Ingo Productions, producing educational and entertainment programs and products. He was an original cast member of Grease, a long running musical play that took the world by storm when it first appeared in Chicago in 1971.

Jerome R. Kowalski ’67 (Chagrin Falls, OH) is retired and enjoys spending time with his wife of 43 years, Mary, and their four grandchildren. They like vacationing in Arizona for Cubs spring training and are planning cruises to various locales.

William S. Lavezzi ’67 (Bedford, OH) has had two great careers—teaching from 1971 to 2000 and association leadership. He played a leadership role in various education unions, which enabled him to become CEO of a non-profit teachers’ organization. He is involved and active in organizations dealing with public policy such as the Cleveland City Club. He has been retired for a few months and is still figuring out what retirement will be like.

James M. Luck ’67 (Chicago, IL) is happily retired, spending summer and fall in Chicago and winter and spring in Arizona.

John J. Morrison ’67 (Chicago, IL) married his prom date, Barbara Brennan. They have three children and three grandchildren. He was a lawyer for the IRS for six years and has had his own law firm since 1984, representing persons and businesses with IRS problems.

After spending 39 years in downtown Chicago, he moved his office to Central Avenue in Edgebrook in 2017, and can now walk to his office. He says life is good!

Richard D. Oakes ’67 (Mount Prospect, IL) recently completed a three-day, 1,900-mile motorcycle trip through Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas. One of his motorcycles (1967 restored) took Best of Show at the 2017 National Motorcycle Museum competition.

His daughter is in the Master’s Program for Regulatory Science at Johns Hopkins Richard P. Otis ’67 (Marietta, GA) retired after having spent 29 years in the railroad industry and 10 years in the trucking industry.

John S. Pontarelli ’67 (Woodridge, IL) had surgery for prostate cancer and is feeling great! He is still working in the restaurant industry at Gibson’s Steakhouse in Oak Brook.

Joseph J. Slawek ’67 (Saint Charles, IL) saw a need for a different kind of flavor company that had both great technology and great service, calling it high tech, high touch. He wanted to build an organization that could compete with the largest international flavor companies across a range of market segments, but also connect with customers as only small companies can, developing relationships, sharing visions, methods and

time. He founded FONA in 1987 on these principles. FONA was awarded the Food Quality & Safety Award in 2016, and in 2015 was honored nationally by Great Places to Work as the number three small/medium manufacturer nationally. Fortune also named FONA the #1 workplace in Chicagoland. He was honored with the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Manufacturing in the Midwest in 2011.

Frank J. Thornton ’67 (Chicago, IL) suffered a hemorrhagic stroke in February 2017 which left him paralyzed on the left side.

After months of rehab at Shirley Ryan Ability Lab, he is walking with a cane and slowly putting Humpty Dumpty back together. He thanks his wife of 43 years, Rita, his son Michael and his wife Lindsey, along with family and friends for supporting him and staying by his side.

Sam R. Wright ’67 (Algonquin, IL) retired in 2011 after working for nearly 10 years as Outside Ops Manager as a security contractor for United Airlines at O’Hare Airport. He lived in Daytona Beach, Florida for nearly three years before recently returning to Illinois.

Terrence J. Majewski ’71 (Sun Prairie, WI) recently accepted the Head Age Group Coach position for the Sun Prairie Storm. He had been coaching in the Illinois area prior to this position. He has three children and always checks up on the St. Pat’s swimmers.

James McCormack ’78 (West Chicago, IL) recently published his first novel, The Last Sunday in Ordinary Time, the story of a neighborhood on the West Side of Chicago as it changes from Irish-American to AfricanAmerican in 1966. Available through Amazon books.

John B. O’Rourke ’80 (Park Ridge, IL) says it’s great working with loyal St. Pat’s grads day in and day out! Shout out to Jim Hickey ’82, Dan Lawlor ’93, Gerard McGuane ’94, and many others. He says he’s lucky to have his wife, Laura (Notre Dame High School), son J.R., (2017 Marquette grad) and daughter, Abby (Miami University) listening to his St. Pat’s stories every day.

Bernard G. Byrne ’72 (Chicago, IL) spent 25 years as a telephone technician and started receiving his pension on his last birthday. He spent six years in the seventies with the Chicago Park District and now the past 12 years as a rigger with them. He owned Dugan’s Pub for ten years with his brother, Gerry Byrne, and nephew Shane Byrne ’91.

He has two more years to retirement to his summer home in Wisconsin on the Wolf River—God willing!

Michael P. Conway, Sr. ’86 (Chicago, IL) is Commander of the Wheeling Police Department.

Robert P. Caron ’77 (Chicago, IL) retired as a Lieutenant from the Chicago Fire Department. He now teaches EMT and Paramedics at Malcolm X College. He and his wife were very happy when their sons decided to attend St. Pat’s--Sean ’10 and Dan ’12.

Brad L. Leshinske ’97 (Glen Ellyn, IL) is enrolled in a PhD program for Human Performance. He is the Director of Training for Fit Code, LLC, and is a professor at Lewis University within their Exercise and Movement Department. He and his wife, Tracy, welcomed the arrival of their first child in September.

Frank P. Gorg Jr. ’77 (Mount Prospect, IL) has worked for the State of Illinois for the past 33 years, but retirement may be looming on the horizon! He and his wife, Mary, have been married for 35 years.

had been working with the Celtics coaching staff for the last six years. This is his first head coaching position.

Thomas J. Barrett Jr. ’06 (Chicago, IL) is working as a Behavior Redirect Supervisor at Maine South High School, and coaching varsity football for the 2016 Class 8A State Champions.

Colm B. Mitchell ’08 (Elmwood Park, IL) completed the pre-theology program at Mundelein Seminary last May and began the four-year theology program in August, and will be ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Chicago in 2021. He is assigned to St. John Fisher Parish in the Beverly neighborhood.

Matthew G. Burmeister ’09 (Macomb, IL) graduated from Loyola University Chicago in 2013 with a Bachelor’s Degree in History and Political Science. He then attended Northeastern Illinois University and graduated with a Teaching License. He is a Special Education/Learning Specialist Teacher at Bushnell-Prairie City High School, where he teaches special education math and science.

Ralph J. Scorpio ’10 (Elmwood Park, IL) recently graduated from DePaul University with a Master’s Degree from the College of Education with a specific concentration in counseling and college student development.

Ryan M. Steglich ’12 (Chicago, IL) is still in school and works with other Shamrocks at Jewel. His biggest accomplishment was to lose 90 pounds while at North Park University.

Matthew T. Cook ’16 (Chicago, IL) is a fleet marine force corpsman in the United States Navy and is stationed at Marine Base Camp Lejeune.
