JULY 2020
We hope you enjoy reading your July issue as much as we have enjoyed putting it together! Life is slowly beginning to feel ever so slightly back to ‘normal’ and actually publishing this month’s magazine has made us feel as if we may be turning a corner. Ours advertisers are in the main, beginning to resume business however we fully appreciate the importance of staying alert and helping to continue to control the spread of this awful virus. If you managed to join us online over the last few weeks you will have seen that we were able to continue to produce the magazine throughout the lock down period - more details are available on Page 6 of this month’s issue. We hope to print a few copies of these publications once our printers are back up to speed. Anyone wishing to obtain one as a ‘souvenir’ please do get in touch. With over 200 rainbow pictures and over 100 birthday greetings, our May edition was most certainly one to remember! Shopping help for vulnerable in Stotfold Do you know someone who cannot get to the shops? Churches Together in Stotfold have launched the Covid-19 Support Group to help those who cannot pick up their shopping from local stores and don’t have local family, friends or neighbours to help them. Individuals who have money for groceries but are unable to shop because they are self-isolating, can call 07401 220349 or email stotfoldchurchestogether@gmail.com. Payment can be made on delivery of the shopping by either cash, cheque or online transfer to Churches Together in Stotfold.
Not everyone has local family or friends, which is why Churches Together is offering this free delivery service. All of our volunteers have been checked for criminal records using the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). After a user registers with the service, he or she can phone or email a shopping list to the contact details above and a volunteer will purchase items if they are available.
Volunteers will follow hygiene guidelines to deliver the shopping and take payment. Our volunteers will be issued with ID badges plus a password to share when organising a delivery. The helpline will be open from 9.00am to 3.00pm, Monday to Saturday, although deliveries can be made outside those times. Churches Together is working alongside The Need Project, which provides food for those who cannot afford it, The Good Neighbour Group, The Stotfold Town Council, and NHS Volunteer Responders, who will be delivering government food parcels to those who are “shielding”. Please urge neighbours & friends to call 07404 220349 if they require assistance. See our main advert on page 10.

Stotfold Couple Celebrate
on Local Radio
‘Wedding’ date
When the country went into lock down back in March, Stotfold couple Scott Clewlow and Kerri Brennan knew only too well the implications this would have for their impending wedding celebrations.. Having moved to Stotfold with their two dogs some 18 months from Welwyn Garden City, the couple were looking forward to their special day, planned for Saturday 6th June.
With government guidelines in place, the couple soon realised their wedding, due to take place at Shortmead House, Biggleswade was no longer a possibility. ‘We were so disappointed at not being able to get married, but fully understood that we are living in such strange times where safety has to come first.’ ‘We have been very fortunate and have been able to book the same venue on the same day next year on what would have been our 1st Anniversary.’ Kerri told the Stotfold News Magazine. Wishing to mark the couple’s special day, family members contacted local radio station, Three Counties Radio to explain the couples situation. Presenter Justin Deeley surprised them both by playing their intended ‘first dance’ song from his car radio and interviewing them from their High Street home. ‘It was an amazing surprise to us both and so lovely to hear car horns beeping and people congratulating us as they passed - it was lovely to mark the day in some way.’ said Scott.
Scott & Kerri pictured outside their High Street home on their ‘wedding’ date.
The newlyweds were due to enjoy a special honeymoon and had hopes of visiting Australia together soon. Guests has been asked for contributions to the trip instead of wedding presents, something which both Scott and Kerri hope can still happen when they finally get to say ‘I do’ next year. Having met as youngsters both attending Welwyn Garden Swimming Club, the couple have known each other since they were very young and have been a couple for 8 years. Kerri told us ‘I am head coach of a local synchronised swimming club and we were due to have some of my synchronised swimmers come down and perform in the swimming pool next to the aisle! Our mutual love of water is what brought us together, hence why we wanted water at our wedding!
‘Both of our dogs were also going to be there on the day to bring our rings to the alter - we can’t wait to make all these things happen for real next year!’ ‘We felt like local celebrities for a day it was so nice on a day that would have been rather sad otherwise.’.

We are so pleased to be back! In case you aren’t able to follow us on our social media you might have wondered where we have been these last two months! Due to the recent government restrictions, we took the decision to cease delivery of our magazine door to door for the duration of April and May. Whilst we understand that not everybody has access to social media, sto we felt it was safer for our delivery volunteers if we published using only tf ol our facebook page for these months. Both our online issues proved immensley popular, with over 3,000 people enjoying the online issues from the comfort of their tablet, phone or screen. Our advertisers enjoyed continuity and those readers kind enough to leave us feedback told us how much they enjoyed being able to access our publications and catch up with the latest news and information online. If you missed these editions you can still read both copies (alongside all of our past magazines dating back a few years) through our Issuu platform: www.issuu.com/stotfoldnews We hope you also like our new look! We spent our time during lock down improving how we present ourselves and decided to ‘freshen up’ and to tweak a few of our inside pages. We are so glad to be back through your doors!

News from
Stotfold Watermill
Unfortunately, another month has gone by with the mill still closed on Sunday afternoons, so we are sure there are many members of the local community who are still anxiously awaiting their first opportunity for a cream tea in Randall’s Tea Room.
At the time of writing in early June we are afraid that we cannot be optimistic about future prospects for opening as the limited space in the mill means any form of social distancing would be very difficult without restricted numbers and a booking system. All our planned activities for children, craft workshops and art exhibitions have regrettably been cancelled but we hope to hold them again in 2021. Please keep watch on our website, www.stotfoldmill.com or our facebook page, to see future announcements. We are still making plans for our Working Steam Weekend on 10/11th October and we will make a decision on whether it can go ahead early in August. If it can go ahead it will be one of the first national steam events to take place this summer and is likely to attract large numbers of participants from far afield.
Thomas Elvin with his most impressive Mill model. Our miller, Ray Kilby, has continued to produce flour and rolled oats to supply our local outlets – Beales Butchers and Adore Nature in Stotfold and Bamboo Turtle in Letchworth, as well as Jordans at Biggleswade. He has so far milled almost double the amount of grain that we use in most years.
While the mill is closed to the public, we are hoping to get the outside of the building repainted. If we are able to get the job commissioned it will need scaffolding to be erected at the front of the mill, so we would ask drivers in Mill Lane to pass with care. Perhaps it will look as smart as the model of the mill created during home schooling by Thomas Elvin in the photograph above!
We have noted the large number of cars parked in Mill Lane by visitors to the nature reserve and so, in line with National Trust properties, we have re-opened the car park. Although we are not making booking a requirement, we trust that visitors will respect social distancing measures. If problems of antisocial behaviour in this area, as has been experienced at times in the past, makes it necessary to close the car park overnight, we would request that visitors pay attention to the closing time posted at the entrance. Doubtless many of you have seen the swans and cygnets on the river in the reserve and on occasions in front of the mill. Thanks to those who have posted photos of them and other wildlife on our social media pages. It is very pleasing to note how many people have been able to enjoy visiting and we are extremely grateful to the Teasel volunteers who have continued their regular maintenance of the area. We look forward to updating you furtherin the next issue of the Stotfold News Magazine.

Pop! Studios – a new child portrait adventure Located by Stotfold nature reserve
Once upon a time, back in 2018, Kyle and Rachel Burman, decided to open their very own Pop! Studios, and the journey began into finding the perfect premises to host a magical place to realise their dreams. Having seen a gap in the market for high end enchanted portraits, a journey of love began over the next few years to bring a dream to reality. Work began in early January 2020 to transform what is now the second home to Pop! Studios, the headquarters being based in Derby. Kyle and Rachel fell in love with the 2200sq ft barn, based next to Stotfold nature reserve as it had an abundance of character with huge potentials for their vision of child photography. Their team specialise in creating magical and truly unbelievable portraits of children as superheros, fairies and even mystical wizards. It’s an entirely unique way of capturing family portraits, which turns make believe into reality. A combination of Hollywood grade sets which are interactive and using high-end editing techniques, Pop! Studios transforms a photo into an entirely bespoke and one-of-a-kind masterpiece. t
The sets within the studios have been given the thumbs up from their children, Samuel (4) and Amelia (7) from the enchanted indoor lake to the superhero room where children can wield round Thor’s hammer and take over New York City. The interactive sets are designed to engage children (and adults) so the natural emotions and facial expressions of joy and wonderment are all real. They believe after reopening from Covid-19 on 1st July, there will be a demand for their style of portraits as they are the first fully interactive studio in the UK. Customers will be taking a step into fantasy which allows everyone to live out their childhood dreams, with hundreds of happy customers already from the Derby studio, Kyle and Rachel are making their own way in Stotfold.

Boys
Fundraising Fun for NHS
After being inspired by the fundraising efforts of Captain Tom Moore back in March, four boys from Fairfield took matters in to their own hands (or feet) this month in order to fundraise for our wonderful NHS.
The boys all from Fairfield, completed different challenges inorder to raise their own amount of money for the many doctors, nurses and NHS staff working tirelessly to help others during the coronavirus pandemic. Setting themselves goals to achieve, the boys all chose their own challenge - Harry Sleat decided to climb stairs the equivalent height of the Empire State Building, Charlie Field completed a 31 mile bike ride in just one day and brothers William and Oliver Croughton decided to run a whole marathon in 14 days.
The boys managed to raise a staggering £2,500 - all of which has been donated to support the NHS workers. William and Olivers mum Helen told the Stotfold News Magazine ‘the boys were so inspired by Captain Tom they felt they wanted to do more t than just clap every Thursday.’ ‘They are doing it for the brave doctors and nurses’. - we are all very proud of their achievements! v Harry, Charlie, William & Oliver on their fundraising mission!
NHS Charities give £1million a day to the NHS, providing vital funds to help the NHS do more. Back in May, the total amount raised topped 100 million pounds with more being raised daily to help keep the fund going. A huge well done boys on all your efforts!

2nd Anniversary for Box Of Cakes
Café & Cake Shop
The 30th of June celebrates our 2nd year within the community of Stotfold for the cafe, in which time we have achieved some wonderful things. Our opening day had huge support from residents, friends, our new neighbours here and other local businesses. We initially started with coffee, cake and light lunches but soon started to expand our menu to meet customer’s requests.
We made what was the old doctors surgery and council offices into a friendly, cosy café where friends could meet for morning coffee, enjoy lunch with family, hold a meeting or host a small birthday celebration. A short while after this, we introduced our ‘Late Night Bistro’ offering an alternative place on a monthly basis to enjoy a set price three course home cooked meal by candlelight without the worry of a taxi home or a costly drinks bill at the end. We look forward to opening this up again very soon.
In the last few months, we feared for the future of the café, being a small independent business. Thanks to the popularity of our afternoon tea’s and the elderly lunchboxes, kindly delivered by volunteers and donated by the generous local community, we have been able to keep going.
Box of Cakes Owner Emma
During this time. we were proud to be given the opportunity, on behalf of BBC Breakfast, to create Colonel Tom Moore’s 100th Birthday Cake, after he raised over 30 million pounds for the NHS. It was an honor to deliver and present this to him and spend the morning at his home watching the interviews, tv crew and the amazing spitfire fly-over. The café will be receiving a deep clean and make-over prior to fully re-opening, and we look forward to the day we can expand and offer more seating and delicious homemade and freshly prepared food for everyone to enjoy. We aim for it to be the hub of Stotfold and would welcome ideas to include in our development.
We would like to thank everyone for their support, friendship and help since opening and look forward to welcoming you back soon. In the meantime, our takeaway menu is available to collect or view on our Facebook page. Emma x

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,
At a time where we are all visiting our green space more than ever before, it has been apparent that many people are neglecting these areas and using them as places to leave rubbish wherever they go. It is such a shame that the minority are spoiling our parks and green areas instead of utilising the bins that are situated nearby.
Dear Editor,
I have just flicked through your online issue for June and it has reminded me of home!
I am staying with my partner in Baythorne End Essex for the lock-down. I cannot go home to Stotfold as Daughter and partner have made my house their own household, so we cannot mix.
I am looking forward to returning home and resuming my pilates classes once again in the not too distant future. Zanna.

Changing Times For Local Schools. Across our area, some 43,000 new homes are expected to be built by 2035 meaning a lot more school places will be needed. Due to these changes, our local schools have been working together with Central Bedfordshire Council on a long-term plan to make sure we have the right schools in the right places, delivering the best education. The Schools for the Future programme held a three-month public consultation on proposed changes for 22 schools in the Shefford, Stotfold and surrounding area. These proposals would see the schools in our area effectively moving to a primary/secondary system to allow expansion to accommodate the new places. 1,467 people responded to a formal public consultation. The results showed strong support for the long term plan however, with mixed comments about the timing of changes a revised plan was devised as summarised below: Henlow Academy to change to a secondary provision in 2021 with it’s feeder schools (Meppershall, Langford, Derwent, Clifton, All Saints and Raynford) changing to primary schools at the same time. Robert Bloomfield and Samuel Whitbread to come together as ‘Shefford & Clifton Academy Education Campus’ (0-18) on the same site from 2023, to include a 7FE secondary school, a 2FE primary school and a 3FE primary school provision. Both Shefford Lower School and Roecroft Lower Schools to become 2FE primary schools in 2023, with all other lower schools convert to primary in 2023. Pix Brook Academy and Etonbury Academy to both become secondary schools in 2023.
To have your say visit www.schoolsforthefuture.co.uk/plans/shefford-stotfold/decision-making Consultation open until June 30th 2020.

Stotfold Pilates Classes Delivered from the Essex Countryside!
With the current restrictions in place, it became apparent that for those people taking part in regular class activites things would have to change to be able to continue participating in the things they enjoy! We spoke to Stotfold Pilates Instructor Zanna Newton about how she has adapted her classes in a rather unusual situation - all the way from Essex!
During week commencing 16th March it quickly became clear that my Pilates classes could not continue from my regular hall venues due to the coronavirus pandemic. My final classes took place on the afternoon of Friday 20th March and with help from my daughter Sophie, back home from university, I was able to deliver my very first online Pilates class at 9.30am the following Monday. That first Monday all four classes were delivered from my house in Stotfold, but after the government announcement that evening I decided to pack a bag and join my partner at his house an hour away, on the Essex-Suffolk border. Classes have continued from there ever since, still with no clear idea of when I can return to Stotfold and once again meet face to face with all of my Pilates clients, many of whom I have been teaching for more than 10 years.
I know that online classes are not for everyone, but with technical support and back up from both Sophie and Martyn, we were able to encourage and assist all those who wanted to give it Zanna running her popular pilates class from Essex! a go. I remember that first week so well; everyone was so kind and patient to others, whilst technical hitches were overcome to enable everyone to take part in the class together. Not many of the classes started on time!
Everything now runs really smoothly and some clients have indicated a preference to continue online after lockdown, as actually, in some cases it suits their lives better – we have all learnt many lessons about how to adapt during these strange times. I quickly calculated new pricing for the online sessions and put together a special package for the summer term to encourage as many people as possible to continue with their usual class. Although they are not quite the same as real life classes, I still keep the classes small, and if everyone is able to direct their camera to their exercise mat I am able to give feedback, support and advice for each person for every exercise.
It has been great to see every ones children, cats and dogs come to see what it’s all about on screen in their own living room. Indeed my dog Charlie, has had a look-in too, even though he is quite old now and sleeps most of the time. We have all hugely benefitted from seeing all those faces on screen and having a brief chat as usual before the class and at the end, giving a real sense of the social aspect which we enjoyed before coronavirus. It has been great to see my regulars from both Stotfold and ESSE in Melbourn, Cambridgeshire, join together. I have also been able to welcome ex-attendees back who have moved away, people have joinedin from Scotland and even the other Melbourne‌ Australia! Those of you who have chosen not to join in online, we miss you all and think of you each week. I look forward to when we can all meet as we did before. Thank you to everyone for your continued support and encouragement. It would have been so much harder without all your kind words and appreciation.

News from
Etonbury Academy
It doesn’t seem possible that we are fast approaching the Summer holiday break. Having missed so much time in school, reflecting on the past academic year feels somewhat strange. The outstanding commitment and generosity from our community has been inspiring, humbling and truly remarkable in such difficult times for so many.
We achieved fantastic GCSE results achieving second best in Progress 8 in the Local Authority, which laid the foundations for an exciting year ahead. After only 18 months with Mr Evason, Principal, in position and implementing new strategies, our staff, governors and students faced the challenge of OFSTED and leapt to GOOD, raising our position in Central Bedfordshire even further. These achievements have not gone unnoticed, and we have recently received confirmation that we have been listed in the ‘Top Performing and Improving School 2020’ by Government Initiatives IQ - Education Excellence 2020, a highly regarded and independent report.
Etonbury Juniors opened their doors in style with the refurbishment and primary team firmly in place. COVID-19 then took over and we closed the school in March to all pupils except key worker’s children. Our staff, students and parents/carers have been catapulted into strengthening their expertise in online technologies for learning, meetings, webinars, podcasts, google classrooms etc. We have had fun with online competitions and seeing parents/carers getting stuck in with teaching. We have even held a virtual sports day. 20%off new Pet Services & Domestic Cleaning customers until July Thankfully, we had future proofed ways of working online, and our students were already familiar with the ‘apps’. Prior to our Year 6 opening we received a rigorous inspection to ensure the safety of our students at Etonbury Juniors, and were delighted to welcome their smiling faces back to school, and see them with their friends, socially distancing of course. At the time of writing we will soon be opening for our Year 10s, making it our 4th school in the building. Sadly, we haven’t been able to welcome our Year 4s to Etonbury this term, but many with siblings and those that have attended our Lower School events already have an idea of what to expect. It has been a challenge with different timetables, staffing, online working and one way systems but we have been prouder than ever of our community to make it work at home and at school. Our plans for the future are bright, with our GCSE success, build completion and staffing in place, we are now ready to develop our plans for Sixth Form. It’s exciting times ahead. We have missed our children in school, and look forward to welcoming everyone back as soon as it is safe to do so. We are already planning our array of trips, drama and music shows and open evenings. We will keep you updated with our plans.

Pix Brook Academy
It is remarkable that we are entering June still in a form of lock down. For all of us at Pix Brook Academy it will be fantastic to have our pupils back in school. During the course of the lock down I know parents have been working fantastically hard to support their children at home. I am well aware of the difficulties associated with teaching your own children and have nothing but admiration for The developments at Pix Brook Academy those of you who have persisted. It may seem a thankless task but please be assured you will reap the rewards at some point in the future when you least expect it! Your children may not thank you now but in years to come they will appreciate your efforts. At PBA we have tried to provide materials and resources that help. Trying to balance the need to provide educational activities without adding pressure to families has been something of a tightrope. Hopefully our use of Google classroom, enabling communication with teachers, regular phone calls / emails for pupils, class Zoom meetings and weekly material on the website have done something to mitigate the challenge of doing schoolwork at home. I would also like to give a brief update on the progress at the permanent school. All staff were invited to visit the site on Thursday 4th June. For most staff this was their first opportunity to go inside the building. It is only on entering the school that the scale and the facilities can be fully appreciated. As one colleague commented “the Learning Resource centre is bigger that the ground floor of our current school! The excitement that staff feel is only matched by the commitment of the Willmott Dixon staff who are clearly motivated and proud of the work they have done. It is obviously disappointing that the virus has prevented both pupils and parents from visiting the school, however I am hopeful that there will be an opportunity to do so in the near future. For now I would once again like to wish everyone well. No doubt you watch the news as keenly as I and look for positives in what has been a most remarkable period in British history. I hope you and your family have not been impacted too dramatically by the pandemic and I look forward to when we can meet in more normal circumstances.

News from
St Mary’s Academy
We start our news this month by welcoming back our eight bubbles of Foundation and Year 1 children to the school. All children have adapted well to the changes we have made and are enjoying being back in school and learning within the school environment. We are looking forward to welcoming our new children and their families when they start their school journey with us in September.
We would like to thank our wonderful families and the local community who have helped St Mary’s Academy and the SMSA to raise over £6,600 this academic year with their fundraising events and activities despite the lock down - this is a fantastic amount of money and very much valued and appreciated.
We wish all of our Year 4 student’s going on to their next adventure at Middle school the very best of luck as they move on to pastures new. We know you will enjoy the next step of your journey and wish you all the very best as you leave St Mary’s Academy. We will miss you!
Speaking of new journeys, all staff and pupils would like to wish Mr Hadley the very best of luck as he begins his new journey to Devon and Mrs Purdie a very relaxing retirement! We hope everybody has a safe and enjoyable summer break and we look forward to welcoming you all back to school on Monday September 7th.

Stotfold Scout Group
Stotfold Scout Group provides scouting to young people between the ages of 6 and 18 years. We have two Beaver colonies (Chickasaw and Cheyenne) for children aged 6–8 years, two Cub Packs (Cherokee and Comanche) for children aged 8–10.5 years, one Scout Troop (Ridgway) for older children aged 10.5–14 years, and Explorers (Mount Longdon) for our oldest age group, young people aged 14–18 years. We are also supported by dozens of adult volunteers, who give up their time to plan weekly activities, take the young people on weekend camps, learn skills and do training on important issues such as safeguarding and first aid, and provide practical assistance such as management or looking after the building or accounts. We are always looking for some new adult volunteers; please get in touch with our GSL Neil if you can help us. All Scout Group activities are sadly still cancelled for the time being. However, our members have been putting their Scouting skills to good use at home. Cherokee Cub Claudia Gibb is working towards her Chief Scout Silver Challenge Award, which is the highest award Cubs can achieve. For her Personal Challenge, she has asked her fellowCubs to send a video of themselves doing an activity (details have been emailed). Hopefully we will have a fun video to share on our Facebook page soon! Biggleswade District Scouts have produced a collection of lockdown activities for us to join in with. There are lots of ideas for activities our young people can do at home; parents can challenge their child(ren) to do something on the list if they need an activity to fill some time. Parents should send written evidence and photos of their young person doing any activities to Leaders, so we can mark off any relevant badgework. The Scout Association have also created The Great Indoors challenge for everyone to take part in, whether they are a member of scouting or not.. The challenge is linked to a staged badge that anyone aged 6 years or older can earn. There are three stages, with nine challenges in each stage, covering practical skills, the outdoors, physical activity, social action, community engagement, international themes, creative skills, spiritual activity, and nights away. Further details can be found on the website www.scouts.org.uk/the-greatindoors. Young people or adults who want to take part should register on the website. If you would like to put your child’s name on the waiting list for the appropriate section, please contact Mrs Jan Peace (01462 639356 or janpeace@gmail.com) If you are interested in becoming a Leader or helper, or require further information, please contact the acting Group Scout Leader, Mr Neil Ludlow (gslstotfold@gmail.com)

Butchers Blog
Latest news from from Beale Bros
We hope that you are all keeping well and safe. The last time we wrote a blog was in the April issue. Little did we know then how the situation would change for all of us.
As many will know, once we were in lockdown, we took the decision to close the shop front and take telephone orders for collection, or for delivery by our volunteers. This has worked well on many fronts and has meant that we have been able to continue to provide our services to the community, whilst maintaining a non-contact payment system. We have been looking closely at safeguarding measures to open the shop front once again. I imagine by the time you read this article we will be up and running.
As I write this, plans are in place to have some screening built onto the counters and for our staff to wear PPE whilst serving in the shop. - As we are limited for space we will be inviting customers in one at a time.
Our order line will remain open for those who wish to use it, maintaining a safe collection service. We are excited to be able to get our counter looking really good, displaying our wide range of products for you to choose from.
Our hot counter will also be up and running again, which I know will be appreciated by many. There will be guidance notices at the shop front and sanitiser will always be available for customer use. Who would have thought that it would come to this, but let us hope with a sustained effort, we can protect our community and get things back on track soon.
We look forward to welcoming you back into the shop once again!

Baldock Rotary Welcomes
New President
On 1st July Baldock Rotary Club welcomed Stotfold resident Paul Redwood as its new President for 2020/21.
What is Rotary and what does it do? Rotary is one of the world’s largest and most successful global membership and humanitarian service organisations, with 1.2 million members and 35,000 clubs in over 200 countries. We have a unique position of being rooted within our own communities, but with a global outlook, ready to tackle challenges at home and abroad. When and why did you join Rotary? I joined Baldock Rotary Club in April 2011, so 9 years ago.
Baldock Rotary President Paul Redwood
Most of my life I have been involved with fundraising for charities in a wide range. I was a founder trustee and a treasurer of AYME (Association of Young People with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) this was important to me as it affected my family. Prior to joining Rotary, I was a trustee and Company Secretary on the Stotfold Mill Restoration team for 8 years. One of the Mill trustees started talking to me about Rotary and he invited me along to a meeting, I never looked back.

What do you enjoy about being a member of Rotary? Personally, it is particularly pleasing to be part of something that has the ability to help deserving causes, of which there are so many. To be able to support charities that provide care and support or assist local community projects and activities is tremendously satisfying and rewarding. I also very much enjoy the fellowship of the members of our club and have made many lasting friendships from other Clubs in our district Beds, Bucks and Herts. Attending annual conferences where Rotarians from all over the UK turn out and enjoy themselves with partners. What responsibilities do you have? As of July 1st I will be taking over the reins for my year as President of the Club. I am also the Membership Secretary - We have our current Club in Baldock that meets at lunchtime but we are looking for people, both male and female of any age, to join us and possibly form a new club. This new club will cater for people who want to meet as a breakfast Club or alternately perhaps in the evening. Can anyone become a Rotary member? Yes, they can. Anyone is welcome to join.
How is Rotary dealing with the coronavirus epidemic? Like all community activities our face to face meetings are currently suspended, so we are holding our weekly meetings by video conferencing. This is different for us but nevertheless it enables our members to stay in touch with each other, which is an important part of Rotary fellowship. More importantly our fundraising activities have also been suspended for the time being and we were sad not to be able to hold the Open Gardens event in May but we hope that ‘normal service’ will be resumed later in the year. essary.

Lock down Recipe Chocolate Brownie with Trace Buggins Happy July All,
This month I have included a nice and easy recipe so you could get the kids involved, and trust me they will love the end product . I’ve never had this off the menu at Mount Pleasant Golf Club ( well did once for all of a week ha ha , you have to listen to your customers!!!)
Local chef Trace Buggins You can add anything to the final mix, nuts, sultanas, chocolate chips and even a bit of chilli but be a bit careful with that don’t do what I did one Saturday lunchtime and try and turn two boxes of Bedfordshire chilli’s into a jam …… I choked half the chefs and had to clear the restaurant until the chilli had cleared the air, laugh now but not a happy boss at the time . Anyway, enjoy the recipe P.S. The trimmings off the side are the best bits! Chocolate Brownie: As always stay safe Trace Ingredients Method: 170g plain chocolate 1. Grease and line your pan with baking parchment (I used 13x9 285g unsalted butter tin) 565g brown sugar 2. Set oven at gas 4 / 180c or 160c fan 4 large eggs 3. Melt the broken chocolate and butter together in the microwave 2tsp vanilla extract/essence watching closely so it doesn’t over cook ( Tip: best in a glass bowl 230g plain flour ) 50g cocoa powder 4. Whisk the eggs then add the sugar and vanilla and beat well. 1tsp baking powder 5. Mix in the melted chocolate mix. 1 pinch of sea salt Delicious Chocolate Brownie! 6. Add the flour, baking powder , cocoa and salt and mix thoroughly. Add your chocolate chips now and then tip into tin and spread evenly -at this point introduce the kids to the great art of cleaning the bowl out! Cook for 30 minutes Brownie will be soft but will set as it chills. Once cold cut into your portions and try to make it last! NB: Use gluten free flour and baking powder for gluten free

Photography competition is a real winner To celebrate our door to door delivery being reinstated we thought it would be nice to get our readers involved with producing our new front cover design. we are always on the look out for new photographs of Stotfold and with lock down meaning more of us taking to the streets we were inundated with amazing pictures to choose from. Josh Swift, Year 10 at Etonbury Academy won the accolade of appearing on the front of this month’s issue with his amazing buterfly photograph. Our cover dictates the subject must have room for our Stotfold News masthead so this photograph fitted the bill perfectly. Congratualtions Josh! Other entries included this beautiful picture of a swan sent in by Amy Hyde, the wild flowers from Trudie Squires, the hidden postbox by Patricia Clegg and the bird in flight from Dave Wilson.

We had so many entries to the competition that it was so hard to choose just one winner! For that reason, we have decided to keep using these amazing photographs throughout the remainder of the year so you may see some of these, alongside others we have saved popping up as front covers very soon.

Stotfold Football Club
At a time when we would normally be well into training for the new season, hosting the Junior Six a Side Tournament and starting our pre-season friendly matches, at the time of writing we do not know when the grassroots football season will start. All we can do is prepare as best we can for the players to start training and for when we are given further information for matches to restart. The lockdown has given people time for reflection and nothing has come across stronger than the need for people to pull together as a community. Like other organisations the football club relies solely on volunteers to provide a good level of local football and going forward we require people to help us in the following positions: a Commercial Manager, a Media Officer (someone proficient in using social media would be a real asset), Match Day Caretaker and additional people to help man the turnstiles, steward matches and serve refreshments during matches. If you feel that you can spare a few hours a week and could fill any of these roles, please contact the Chairman Phil Pateman on 07825 133344 or email us on the address below.
Following the merger with the Junior Club and our brand-new facility in Arlesey Road these are exciting times for the club, but we need your help for us to reach our goal of progression for all teams going forward. As many of you will know we lost our long serving Match Secretary Margaret Richardson in March one of the many roles she performed for the club. She was a treasured member of our “football” family and we give thanks for her life and all that she gave to the club.

Stotfold Methodist Church
Sowing for a Harvest
When you work for a good thing, when you pray for a good thing, then it's like sowing seeds for a harvest. Like lots of other people this year, I've made my first attempts at planting things in many years. It's great to see the runners curling around their supports and I am looking out for pests. But this year's not been good for sowing and reaping so far. I heard on Radio 4's Farming Today that the dry spring means a second poor year for farmers. We rely on our climate and must take care of it.
Harvest is a big theme in Bible teaching. This isn't a surprise since the audience and writers and speakers of the Bible text lived in times and locations of farming and fishing. Although much of Western society has lost its relationship with farming, places like ours still have those connections. So those Bible sayings like “Let us not become weary of doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” still ring true. That sentence was from a first century letter from the man we now call St Paul to a group of believers who lived where Turkey is today.
CHIMNEY SWEEP
The picture of a good harvest makes sense. If we carry on doing good, then more good will come. I am praying that the good volunteering and neighbourliness we've discovered in lockdown will carry on. We need to encourage one another in praying and doing good, for surely good will come as a result. So keep on working and praying for good, till the soil of God’s heart, because surely we really are in need of good harvest. Revd Graham Claydon-Knights, Minister, Stotfold Methodist Church. 07340857386
