From the Editor From the Editor Welcome to our August issue.
We hope you are all well and enjoying the official start to the summer holidays. By the time this has reached you the children will have broken up from school and we hope the weather has decided to improve so we can all enjoy some warmer days!
This month we have tweaked a few things, and introduced more colour to the magazine to coincide with the launch of our new website - www.stotfoldandarleseymagazine.co.uk It was time to freshen up our look and we hope you like it! We also welcome another local expert to our team - Jo Loach will be offering readers of the Stotfold News Magazine the benefit of her advice on all things to do with mental health, especially poignant in recent times we think you will agree, Jo’s first piece can be found on Page 27 of your August issue.
We received so many positive comments on our feature last month on the re-building of the Stotfold Mill - we are so glad you enjoyed reading the fascinating story and we hope that next time you pass along Mill Lane you will pause for a minute to take a closer look at the building and see for yourself the work that went in to restoring it in all of it’s glory. Speaking of Mill Lane, our front cover this month (sent in to us by Nikki Lane) shows the field situated to the right of the Stotfold cemetery which is currently the subject of a planning application to build homes in this location. The facebook group ‘Save Mill Lane’ has encouraged local residents to voice their opinions over this development - you can find more details by searching the Central Bedfordshire Council website and entering the reference number CB/21/02918/PIP.
We will be taking some time to get away this month and hope that many of you are able to do the same. Remember, if you manage to holiday don’t forget to pack your Stotfold News Magazine and take a snap with it somewhere lovely. We always enjoy featuring these in future issues. Whatever you do we hope you all enjoy the summer!

Your Letters Dear Editor,
Dear Editor,
As a Stotfold resident for many years, I think I must be of the age now where my curious side has got to me and I have started to look into my family history, partly for my benefit, but more-so for my 7 year old daughters. During a recent visit to the Cemetery, I had a closer look at the war memorial and noticed a number of the fallen had the Bygrave family name. I know my family were local and quite simply I would like to know if any of those soldiers that fought and gave their lives for our country may have been distant relatives? I have a copy of the Stotfold Reflections book which gives some information by way of the memorial and have also reviewed the ‘Roll-of-Honour.com’ entries compiled by Martin Edwards but if anyone has researched the names listed further, particularly the Bygrave entries, I would love to hear from you.
I’m seeing more of these electric scooters going up and down Stotfold High Street on the road and pavements. The concern I have is these things go very fast and I feel it’s only a matter of time before there could be a bad accident.
I may be contacted on either 07980 533860 or neil.bygrave@ntlworld.com Thank you Joanne, and keep up the great work with the Magazine! Neil Bygrave.
They go from pavements to roads with very little thought of safety and showing they have very little road sense. One of the main reasons for me getting in touch is while watching the news on television they said it is totally illegal to use these scooters in public places ie roads and pavements. I’m thinking it might be a good idea to put a piece in your magazine informing parents in Stotfold that these scooters are not allowed to be used on the roads and pavements, as I’m sure they are probably not aware of this fact. Regards R,Stackemann.

Your Letters Dear Editor, I have recently had a new shower unit installed by AJ Day after contacting them after seeing them inside the Stotfold News Magazine. I am pleased to say the work carried out was very tidy, it took about a week and a half - I would recommend them for anybody looking to have work done in their home. Thank You. Edward Hyde. Dear Editor, When we lost our son Kevin very suddenly last September, we didnt have the opportunity to give him a proper send off due to the lock down but his daughter Grace came up with a lovely idea. Her suggestion was to have a picnic down at the Riverside near the Ford Bridge just for immediate family (14 in total.) This was always his favourite place, especially somewhere to take his children. It is also a special place for most of our family, all of us having good memories of this spot. We sat and reminisced about the happy times we spent there.
Charity No 1131275
Unfortunately our British weather intervened and we did have to retreat to our son Kenton and his wife Fiona’s home to have our picnic. The Picnic was supplied and delivered by ‘Lesley’s Lay and Leave Buffets’ and was delicious with a good selection of food all very well presented. All in all we had a very good afternoon and think we gave Kevin a good send off and came away with very happy memories. Many thanks Colin & Margaret Moore

News from Stotfold
Watermill
THANK YOU, JOHN….But the mill is under threat!
I hope you all enjoyed the opportunity to read John Hyde’s article in last month’s edition of Stotfold News. It was a fascinating history of the mill and account of the work of the volunteers to rebuild it after the devastating fire in 1992. In particular John described how his building company carried out the restoration after being awarded the contract 20 years ago last month. Thank you John for the article and for your magnificent work in bringing the mill back to life.

Stotfold and Bedfordshire Is truly fortunate to have this outstanding building of special architectural and historical interest as a piece of our heritage, available for visitors to see the ancient watermill in action producing traditional stoneground flour, as well as our display of rural life artifacts. The object is to provide for the enjoyment and education of future generations.
It is now of immense concern that the future of Stotfold mill is seriously threatened. In order to maintain the mill requires in excess of £30,000 per annum. This has largely been raised by our two annual major events in May and October which have attracted hundreds of visitors, not just locally but from far afield. Unfortunately, the Covid lockdown has meant both our events last year and the Steam Fair and Country Show in May have had to be cancelled resulting in a major depletion of the Trust’s funds. However, we are now faced with potentially an even greater and more permanent threat to the future existence of the mill.
A Planning in Principle application for 9 houses on Mill Lane between the Cemetery and the Stotfold Nature Reserve has been submitted to Central Beds Council. We are sure Stotfold residents can see countless reasons why approval of this application would be totally undesirable. It might be thought that this could point to possible further expansion of the town out to the A1, or an increased traffic hazard, undoubtedly in conflict with the Council for the Protection of Rural England’s Quiet Lanes Scheme, etcetera. The fact that the proposal includes land for the extension of the Cemetery should not be a factor as the landowners could sell the land to the Town Council as a separate issue. From the mill’s point of view the application for house building, if approved, would undoubtedly rule out holding future major events and as explained cut off the essential source of income and end the future of the mill. The application number is CB/21/02918/PIP and the consultation period expires on the 27th July, which means that by the time you read this it could be too late to submit an opinion against. As this is only a request for planning in principle, if CBC unwisely approve it, a future detailed application could presumably follow when objections could be submitted, so please watch for future developments. On the slightly brighter side for the time being at least, we are still hoping that the mill will have opened to the public again on Sunday 25th July and that we will see many of the community coming along to support us and, of course, to enjoy a delicious cream tea. We are also planning to hold our Working Steam Weekend on 9th/10th October, preceded by Live at the Mill on Friday evening, 8th Oct. Look out for more publicity and more information about these events in next month’s issue and on our website or social media pages.

Ask Anna, Your local Vet
In associaltion with Henlow Vets Your local Independant Veterinary Centre
Each month we invite readers of the Stotfold News Magazine to ask Anna Marshall-Brown of local independent Veterinary Centre Henlow Vets some advice on their family pet: Dear Anna, We have just re-homed a young dog (he is a crossbreed - Jack Russel and one other!) Currently we are deciding how best to protect him against common issues such as fleas, can you suggest anything? Jessica
Hi Jessica, I hope that you are getting on well with your new pet(s) and enjoying the British summertime! It's a great time to review preventative healthcare when you get a new animal; as vets we prefer prevention to cure as so many issues can be dealt with more simply in this way. Firstly, you asked about parasites and how best to prevent these infesting your beloved dog. There's so many to talk about so this month I'll talk about external parasites, and next month about internal parasites. Also I'll write about vaccinations in the next few months! As always your vets are the prime place to talk to regarding preventative healthcare, as they can provide the most effective and up-to-date products that would suit your particular pet. They also often have a monthly preventative healthcare plan which includes parasite control and vaccinations, giving you peace of mind that you're keeping your pet as fit and healthy as possible..
Henlow Veterinary Centre 22 Bedford Road Lower Stondon Beds SG16 6EA (01462) 416416 Opening hours: Mon-Fri 8.30am - 18.30pm Sat 9am -12 noon
So firstly- the ever present flea! These pesky parasites are still as common a problem as ever. Fleas hop onto your pet from the environment or other animals, then stay there for days, feeding on your pet's blood. Each female can lay 20-50 eggs per day which then fall off your pet and onto your carpets and furnishings. These hatch quickly in the summer heat, going through a larval stage , then a pupa, before hatching out as an adult. When the fleas feed they can cause irritation and soreness of the skin, and some dogs and cats can be allergic to their saliva causing a more intense reaction and skin allergy. Fleas also carry other disease such as Mycoplasma, which causes anaemia in cats.
There are many different flea preventions on the market, coming in spot on, collar, treat and tablet form. I can't mention specific brands but as a general rule the most up to date products will be sold by veterinary surgeries; they are put on more general sale further down the line. The most important thing, apart from specific product, is regular treatment of ALL the dogs and cats in your household, and treatment of the environment if you are unlucky enough to get fleas breeding in your house. In this area we also get a lot of ticks, which again feed on dog and cat blood. These little spider like arachnids live in the outside environment and then, when ready to feed, crawl up some vegetation and wait for a passing animal to brush by, at which point they crawl onboard! Ticks screw their mouthparts into your dog's skin, causing pain and irritation. They can also transmit disease such as Lyme's disease, and more recently we are seeing occasional cases of European diseases such as Ehrlichiosis and Babesiosis being transmitted. These diseases cause anaemia and bleeding disorders and can be life threatening. It takes 24-48 hours for diseases to be transferred from the tick to your animal, so most products will kill ticks within this time, or repel them before they attach. If a tick has attached to your pet please speak to your vets for advice, as we normally recommend removal. Please don't pull the tick off as this can lead to the mouthparts remaining buried in the skin which can cause an abscess to form.

What an end to another surreal year as we manage COVID implications and look towards normality!
As well as welcoming back our children in March we have managed to work through the last year without a bubble closure! Our attendance has remained high and we thank our families for their continued commitment. Our whole school Olympic Sports Week in ‘bubbles’ was a first but nevertheless great fun and a huge success with the children, we managed to work around the Great British Weather! It was sad we weren’t allowed to welcome our families in to spectate but there are lots of pictures on the website to view!

Our Year 4s also managed to have fun on their special adventure themed activity day as they sadly missed their residential trip, as well as fun and games at their various leaver’s events! We wish all of our Year 4 students going on to their new journey in Middle school the best of luck.
There were some sad moments too as we said goodbye to Mrs Comley but we wish her the very best of luck in the future! As a school we are also very proud of our fundraising efforts in conjunction with our parent's association, the SMSA. Despite everything that has occurred in this last academic year we still managed to raise over £1,220.00 towards Children In Need, Save the Children and Comic Relief. Many thanks go to our staff, community and families for their continued support without which this would not have been possible. So to end this academic year, we hope everybody has a safe and enjoyable summer break and we look forward to welcoming everyone back to school on Monday 6th September.

News from
Etonbury Academy
The last half of the Summer Term at Etonbury has seen a hive of activity with numerous events, activities and planning for the next academic year and beyond. We were delighted that our Year 11s were able to celebrate the end of their Etonbury Experience and GCSEs with a garden party held in a marquee on the school grounds. They have had one of the hardest academic years for examinations, and we are so proud of the way in which they have dealt with the effects of the pandemic at school. We sincerely wish them all the very best in their next steps, and hope they remain in touch. Working with our community has become a focus for the school, and in particular our Student Voice team. They have met with Stotfold Town Council to help support their Riverside development project, and will soon be participating in a site visit to feed in more ideas. The proactive team meet each other regularly, and have been involved in improving the school environment and provide valuable feedback for supporting teaching and learning. The team is made up of over 40 students, and they have just been awarded UK STUDENT VOICE AWARD 2021 runner up! Transitions into Etonbury Juniors and the Secondary School have been an important part of this half term. These help our children move into the school with confidence, and reduce any anxieties they may have. Our Year 4s from all the feeder schools were beaming when they were collecting their Google Chromebooks and Etonbury backpacks. Our Year 6s have also been part of an extensive transition programme and have been involved in numerous activities in Art, English, Design and technology, Food technology, Media and Drama. They are very excited to hear we have been lucky enough to be performing ‘Matilda’ in the Autumn Term when hopefully you will be able to book tickets to come and watch! Sport has continued to be a big part of our school. Our PE department ran their own Euro interform tournament and the support from teachers and students with their banners on the sidelines at the 3G pitch every lunchtime has brought a real sense of community and fun into school. Also, a huge congratulations to Evie who is now part of the Regional Netball team and Lennon who has been signed to Cambridge FC Academy for another year. Across the curriculum our Year 10 Childcare class have visited Gothic Mede Academy. These visits have provided our students with valuable c ontent for their written work, as well as given them enthusiasm for working in childcare. Thank you to GMA for their support. Despite all the challenges we have all faced with COVID, Etonbury is going from strength to strength. We ntend to build on our success and develop your children and our staff to be the best that they can be.

News from Poppies
& Poppyfields Nursery
Welcome to our news! Our re-vamp continues, with a ‘Cosy Cottage’, a ‘Chatter Cottage’ and an ‘Imagination Station’ now built at our Poppies site! These structures provide comfortable spaces outdoors for children to feel snug, cosy, safe, develop friendships, chat and create beautifully imaginative scenarios! We continue to spend the vast proportion of our time outdoors, as this is the healthiest environment. This month, snails have been a source of great inspiration! At Poppies, bug hunts resulted in a lovely topic developing on snails, with patterns of shells, habitat, art and design ideas and music and movement evolving from this. At Poppyfields, their inspiration came from our three new Giant African land snails! They are huge! Poppies will also soon be the proud ‘family’ of another trio of land snails for the children to care for and enjoy! Our after school provision also enjoy their time outdoors, enjoying games, free play and relaxing after their day in school. We held an Open day at Poppies in July, to welcome our new starters and have one planned for August at Poppyfields. This means that we are saying goodbye to some of our current children who are joining our local lower and primary schools. A full transition programme is in place to ensure children are familiar with their new settings and staff. We wish them every success and happiness as they begin their new adventure! Places for our Nature and Activity Camp during the summer holidays at our Poppies site are now almost full. Staff from both Poppies and Poppyfields will be working to ensure children attending see familiar faces. There are lots of fun adventures planned! We are pleased to confirm that sessions for September can now be booked at both sites. At Poppies -7.45 a.m to 6 p.m, or sessional care/education for all nursery and Reception children attending St Marys Academy. For children starting St Marys Academy in September we are available for wrap until your child starts school full time. At Poppyfields, 8 a.m to 6pm or sessional care/education for all nursery children and wrap, for children attending Fairfield Park Lower School, Dickens Boulevard site. This includes Squirrels, Reception and Key Stage 1. We are also offering wrap to children starting school in September. Both sites offer 15 hour Universal funding for ‘free’ places, and if eligible, the 30 hour offer. For information, please contact us on billpoppies@gmail.com

News from Roecroft
Lower School
The end of my third year as Headteacher has flashed by in the blink of an eye, and what an eventful year it has been. I have to end the year once again, thanking my families and my staff. Thank you for your support and hard work over the last year; thank you for taking every change in your stride and for tirelessly sticking to a stream of guidance and ever-changing expectations. I continue to be grateful and know the success of the year is down to each and everyone of you. Finally, to my incredible Year 4 children and their families, I know each one of you will be amazing in your new settings. Remember to simply try your best and be kind each day. The world is your oyster! Wishing you all a sunny, relaxing and fun-filled summer, Warmest wishes, Mrs Cross
Pupils enjoying the Roecroft dance morning
Key Stage 2 Update In Year 3, we had a wonderful summer term, with fourteen weeks full of fun and learning. The children particularly enjoyed our dance morning, sports day and Maya and South America topic days. On Maya day, the children were really excited to complete their Maya masks made out of Modroc which they had been carefully designing and sculpting for weeks. On South America day, the children loved using their geographical skills to investigate the continent further. They explored the terrain and climate of The Andes and planned what they would take in their rucksack in case they got stranded there. In English, the children explored ‘The Chocolate Tree’ a traditional tale which explains where chocolate came from. We finished off the year with lots of well-deserved fun and games to celebrate all the hard work the children had put in over the year. The Year 4 children finished the summer term with energy and excitement, spending time both enjoying their final weeks at Roecroft whilst working towards the move to their new schools. We had lots of fun during the last few weeks including inter-house sports day. We completed sprints and a 100m relay race and everyone enjoyed the friendly competition between the houses! We also put on a Year 4 football tournament alongside a netball tournament for the children to play in. To finish the term we held our annual leavers party for the children with a disco, buffet and ice cream van so they could have a send-off in style! They have been a fantastic cohort and we wish them all the best of luck when starting at their new schools.
We are now busy getting our classrooms ready for September and have been thinking about what new things we can plan for the children to enjoy. We look forward to updating you after the summer break.

Elaine and family would like to thank everyone for the kindness, patience and understanding shown to them and to Richard over these past few months. He finally succumbed on 16th June after a long battle with dementia and cancer. The funeral was held at the little chapel inside the cemetery grounds on July 9th. We were surrounded with the love and respect of so many people who stood patiently outside during the service. The family were especially touched by the ‘guard of honour’ given by so many members of Stotfold Bowls Club. Thank you to you all.

What are your "most important"?
As I think about August 2021, it's all full of unknowns. I am planning to see some friends, visit some places during a couple of weeks' leave, perhaps tidy up the garden. But I am really thinking about what happens after. I am thinking about how it will be for us all, how our tentative plans for restarting activities will work out. For we are told that the whole nation will on a new path in living with the pandemic. But I want to be on a new path anyway, the path of implementing the things we have learnt in the last 18 months. Some of those lessons have been gravely difficult, others have been a realisation of what is really important in life. What are your "most important"? Jesus was asked "what is most important commandments?" His answer was: 1. Love God with your whole heart, mind, soul and strength, and 2, Love your neighbour as yourself. A lawyer challenged Jesus' answer, asking "But who is my neighbour?" Clearly that 2nd commandment was a challenge to him - perhaps he wanted to limit his obligations. Jesus replied with his famous parable of the Good Samaritan. Jesus' answer shows that there are no limits. None of us like the risk of unbounded obligations. But Jesus' declared that it was more risky to limit one's obligations upon humanity than to not limit it. And this is a lesson that I've learnt in these days. We've all seen the results of limiting obligations. We've seen the unfair suffering in our society - of statistics proving discrimination based on skin colour. We've seen the unhappy effects of the greed of our Established 2010 society upon our planet. I have learnt that it is VITAL that we really love our neighbour the Fully insured & DBS checked same as we love ourselves and thus aim for the balance that is so important for our future Loving care guaranteed! and our children's and grandchildren's future. Is this not the most important?

Art Club
Stotfold resident Malcolm Goater is a key member of the Stotfold Art Group. He helps organise the weekly painting sessions and has been a keen "hands on" supporter of our Summer and Winter exhibitions. Malcolm joined the group in his retirement and started painting watercolours, mainly of Scottish scenes inspired by holiday photos. When he moved on to painting in acrylic and then oils, he really hit his stride. He tackled large canvases with enthusiasm, creating dramatic landscapes with strong colours and striking effects. Malcolm has worked through a wide range of subject matter and his paintings have been on display in the Cards'N Crafts shop and at Stotfold Mill. GREAT NEWS * The Stotfold Art group is hoping to meet again at the Roecroft Centre on 22nd July at 1.30 - 3.30, subject to the covid restrictions set by the hall hirers.
We also plan to have a display of paintings in the tearoom for Stotfold Mill's reopening in late July. We look forward to hearing from you if you would like any details on our group or are enquiring about joining us. Contact 07734 304590 for details.

Junior Football Club
End of season tournaments are now in full swing and we have have two finalists among our many Stotfold Junior teams this year.
Firstly, Barry West’s U’13 Amber’s won the Watton 5-a -side tournament at the beginning of July (pictured below) great pic team and an even more deserved win! Secondly, our under U’12 Grey team managed by Luke Bland were runners up in the Cuffley U’12s tournament. A huge well done to both teams and indeed to all our teams for perservering through what has been a very testing time. We look forward with great anticipation to a new season where hopefully we are able to enjoy more of the football that we all enjoy to watch and play.

Mental Health Matters with Jo Loach
Let me introduce myself to you, I’m Jo, a resident of Arlesey. I work as a counsellor within a local counselling charity, I have a private practice, give talks, teach and preach on mental health. In short, I am passionate about mental and emotional health. This is because as recent times have reminded us, life can be hard, we can and do get hurt and we don’t always Are you suffering with foot health know what to do with all the horrible thoughts and feelings that arise in the face of life’s complications or discomfort? challenges. This pandemic has certainly been the biggest, most prolonged trial of our time. It has impacted us all in individual ways depending on • Corns & Callus Removal • Verrucae & Athletes Foot circumstance, but the loss of life as we knew it, is universal. Toe Nail & Finger Nail Clipping Now, as freedom day looms ever closer, levels of anxiety are on the increase. For many, this is simply too much too soon. Whilst the speed of the vaccine rollout has been phenomenal, knowledge around the efficacy and side effects remain in their infancy. Not to mention the disruption caused through continuing efforts to contain the increase in infections. -With so many unknowns on the path ahead, it is natural to feel uncomfortable about such uncertainty. Whilst our responses to this situation will vary, all are valid.

Teasel News After a late start to the growing season this year, we have been trying to keep up with the growth along the footpaths that we help to maintain. As the summer progresses, tall nettles comfrey and grasses along the edges start to collapse into the nearest available space – usually the path that has just been cleared! New growth along the hedgerow – and especially brambles – continue to shoot out at an alarming rate.
August is a great time of year to spot common butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies – drawn out by the heat of a sunny day. Keep an eye out for the Painted Lady butterfly – the number reaching Britain varies each year. Some birds, like swifts and swallows, are already preparing for their migration back south to warmer countries. In mid-summer, most birds are too busy raising their young, to be out singing – but by August the new chicks are mostly “fledged” and out of the nest, so birdsong returns. TRIBUTE TO JOHN AND LUCY ROGERS
It is with much sadness that we note the death of John Rogers – longtime member of Acorn in Arlesey. With his wife Lucy – who sadly passed away a while back – they were active in many local projects and were well known both in Arlesey and within the local area. They will both be remembered most for their kindness and sense of fun.

Local News
New homes developments under construction may look like exciting places to explore for youngsters, but David Wilson Homes is warning children and their parents that they can be extremely hazardous. As St Mary's CofE Academy is nearby David Wilson Homes’ Stotfold Park development in Stotfold, the housebuilder has developed a virtual site safety video to teach the children to stay away from this dangerous environment during the summer holidays.
After watching the video, David Wilson Homes enlisted the help of the local school children to create a poster that aimed to raise awareness of the dangers of playing near building sites. After receiving a variety of entries from the school, David Wilson Homes selected Annie Pollock (7) as the competition winner for her artistically designed poster. The judges were particularly impressed with the use of colour and imagery to highlight the hazards of a building site, in addition to the value of information included. Mrs Joan Welch, Annie’s Class Teacher at St Mary’s CofE Academy, said: “Annie has a good imagination and is very creative. We are pleased to be able to support David Wilson Homes with their site safety campaign.”
Conditions treated include spinal and extremity injuries, neck related headaches and sprains/strains.
Annie was presented with a £30 Amazon voucher as a thank you gift for her design as well as helping David Wilson Homes promote site safety. Jason Hearn, Sales DWSM - Winner of the Site Safety Poster Competition, Annie Director at David Wilson Pollock, with her class teacher Mrs Joan Welch Homes South Midlands, said: “It’s our responsibility to make children aware of the hazards and we’re very grateful to Annie and the pupils of St Mary’s CofE Academy for helping us raise awareness of site safety.” “We would like to thank all of the pupils for participating in our poster competition. After receiving such high quality entries, we can see the children strongly understand the value of health and safety and we’re very pleased to have worked with the school on this project.”

Please keep an eye on our Facebook page and website for more information – we will also display a poster on the outside noticeboard of the Greenacre Centre confirming the re-opening date and hours. In the meantime, you can still get hold of us in the usual ways, by post at The Greenacre Centre, Valerian Way, Stotfold, SG5 4HG, email enquiries@stotfoldtowncouncil.gov.uk and by phone 01462 730064.
COUNCILLORS – WE GAIN ONE AND LOSE ONE At our June Town Council meeting, we were very pleased to co-opt a new council member - Councillor Talvinder Bhasin, who brings an interest in the education of our young residents, and a wish to encourage the community spirit in Stotfold. She will be joining our Cemetery Management Committee and Planning Committee, once our regular meetings resume in September. At the June Council meeting, we also said goodbye to one of our council members, Humphrey Pickering, who has relocated to north Wales. We wish Humphrey well in his new home, and welcome Talvinder to the Town Council. Humphrey’s vacant post has been advertised through the normal route with Central Bedfordshire Council, and if the required number of requests for an election are not received, we are permitted to fill the vacancy by co-option. If this is the case, please keep an eye on our Facebook page, website and notice boards for more information. DOG FOULING
Stotfold Town Council is working with Central Bedfordshire Council to highlight problem dog fouling in the town, and we are asking residents to advise us of locations you consider to be the worst dog fouling areas. Please send in your thoughts to enquiries@stotfoldtowncouncil.gov.uk, post to Greenacre Centre, Valerian Way, Stotfold, SG5 4HG or put through our letterbox.
COMMUNITY GRANTS Local organisations are invited to make application for grants that will directly benefit Stotfold; applications from individuals will not be considered. Please contact the Council offices for an application form and guidance notes. These can also be downloaded from our website www.stotfoldtowncoucnil.gov.uk (Council/Administration/Useful Docs). Completed applications must be received (by post or email to our enquiries address above) no later than Wednesday 15th September 2021. WELCOME BACK TO BUSINESS STOTFOLD! In these difficult times, some businesses are finding it really hard, so Stotfold Town Council would like to show its support for Stotfold businesses, to help them to re-open and build back strongly and safety following the most recent lockdown.
Businesses of all sizes in Stotfold are invited to forward contact details and a brief overview (350 words max.) of the businesses that you operate to businessdirectory21@yahoo.com. You will receive free advertising in a dedicated publication focussed on Stotfold based businesses. The publication will be created by Stotfold News Magazine and will be distributed to every household in Stotfold. This opportunity has been made possible by the Government’s ‘Welcome Back Fund’ and made available via Central Bedfordshire Council.

PUBLIC ART – GREENACRE PARK By the time you read this article, the project to install public art at Greenacre Park should be completed! In 2019, artist Tim Ward put forward a design proposal to install a sundial with mosaic inserts and, after being successfully commissioned, began a community engagement exercise to determine the artwork detail. With the design confirmed, he worked with our local schools and the community to produce some amazing mosaics to be fixed to the granite sundial seats. With supply and delivery delays caused by the Coronavirus pandemic, we eagerly awaited confirmation that the grant blocks were ready, and at the end of June this year, the granite blocks were put in place, with the mosaics to follow. The planned completion and handover of the artwork, which now includes two sundial seating areas, is the middle of July.
This fantastic artwork has been made possible using Section 106 funding from developers Taylor Wimpey and Persimmon Homes, and artwork by Tim Ward of Circling the Square Ltd.
RIVERSIDE PLAYING FIELD MULTI USE GAMES AREA (MUGA) The Town Council is currently looking at the MUGA at Riverside Playing Field, its condition, usage and thinking about a potential refurbishment with improved facilities. We have now opened a consultation exercise using SurveyMonkey and would really like to hear your views on the MUGA and Riverside Playing Field please. You can access the survey using the QR code, or through the SurveyMonkey link. https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/RiversidePFMUGA
We will leave the survey open until the end of August, so you still have time to let us know your views!
CEMETERY GARDEN OF REST In last month’s edition of this magazine, we advised that work was due to start on the existing Garden of Rest in the Beacon Section of Stotfold Cemetery, replacing the old wooden sleeper surrounds which were in really poor condition, with a new bricked wall surround. This work is now underway, and contractors S.J. Thompson Builders Ltd have been undertaking the work in a respectful manner, allowing families to ashes graves of their loved ones and ensuring that they are not disturbed during works. Weather depending, the work should be completed by the end of July.
