Love Where You Live Stotfold’s Great Spring Clean!

Patient of Larksfield with Diabetes

If you have diabetes you may be at risk of developing an eye condition called diabetic retinopathy which can cause sight loss if not treated.

Stotfold will be taking par t in this year ’s Gret British Spring Clean event to help keep our town looking it’s ver y best! It’s easy to take par t, simply pop along to the Stotfold Town Council offices during office hours (Greenacre Centre, Valerian Way) and collect your ver y own litter picking tool set!

Once you have chosen your area and collected the litter, either return it back to the Greenacre Centre or to one of the designated drop off points (see the Stotfold Town Council social media for details of these nearer to the time.) It’s great fun for our young people and encourages positive education around littering for the future.

The Great British Spring Clean is the nation's biggest mass -action environmental campaign. Since 2016, millions of amazing Litter Heroes have shown they love where they live by pledging to pick more than 4.5 million bags of litter. Join the thousands of volunteers who are making a difference, ever y day, all across the countr y

Whether on your own or as par t of a group, litter-picking is an easy and fun way to get active, improve your wellbeing and take care of the environment on your doorstep Why not get involved and help to keep our town tidy this Spring!

For more details, see the poster on the right or contact Stotfold Town Council on 01462 730064 or email enquiries@stotfoldtowncouncil.gov.uk

Screening for this condition is a key par t of diabetes care, This is not the same as a regular eye test with an optician and does not replace getting your eyes checked at a routine visit to your optometrist (optician).

If you are registered with Larksfield and Arlesey Surgeries and you would like more information about diabetic eye screening, please contact us on blmkicb carecoordinator ivs@nhs net

Meningitis A Guide to Recognising Symptoms

We have been asked to help spread awareness and education around the signs and symptoms of Meningitis Meningitis is inflammation of the lining around the brain and spinal cord – the meninges Someone who has meningitis or sepsis can become seriously ill ver y quickly, so always trust your instincts and get medical help fast by speaking to a health professional.

The first symptoms are usually fever, vomiting, headache and feeling unwell Limb pain, pale skin, and cold hands and feet often appear earlier than the rash, neck stiffness, dislike of bright lights and confusion It is impor tant to understand that not ever yone gets all the meningitis and sepsis symptoms: they can appear in any order.

The char t on this page was supplied to the Stotfold News Magazine by Public Health professionals and shows the symptom check wheel which is useful for helping to remind us all of the key signs and symptoms to be aware of

Remember, symptoms can appear in any order and not ever yone gets all symptoms. Do not wait for a rash to appear Above all else, trust your instincts

This information can be found at www.meningitis.org an incredibly helpful resource should you wish to find out more Someone with Meningitis or sepsis can get a lot worse ver y quickly Call 999 for an ambulance or go to your nearest A&E immediately if you think you or someone you look after could have meningitis or sepsis Call NHS 111 for advice if you're not sure if it's any thing serious. Dear Editor,

I would like to thank the Stotfold News Magazine for the prize you awarded me as par t of your Januar y Competition Corner of a Reflexology Session with Heidi Jenkins The hour long session in her treatment rooms in Maple Gardens was one of the most relaxing and enjoyable experiences I have had, and given my current circumstances, one of the most valuable in removing the tensions in my body

Removing these and the relaxation it brought about can only be beneficial to the effor ts to get rid of the cancer I currently have The environment Heidi has created in her treatment room is both calming and relaxing and her unhurried

approach removed any of the tensions one normally feels in similar circumstances Her manipulation of my feet was both soothing and relaxing and at the end, Heidi was able to give me some indication of where I had problems and how they might be resolved

This in my case, was re -assuring and hopefully in 6 weeks time my CTScan will confirm it I would regard her session as being extremely good value for money even if it is only for the relaxation and relief of tensions and highly recommend at least a trial session with her to your readership

A 5 star review from me and my grateful thanks for the prize Kind regards, Roger

Editors Note: We are so pleased you enjoyed your prize Roger!

News from the Mill.

Women in Milling:

A Thousand Years of Skill, Strength and Community

As we celebrate International Women’s Day on 8th March, a day dedicated to recognising women’s achievements across the world, and Mother ’s Day on 15th March, honouring the care, dedication and strength of mothers and mother figures, here at Stotfold Mill, we felt it would be fitting to explore the role that women have played in our milling histor y.

Across the last millennium, the stor y of milling in Britain has often been told through the lens of the millertraditionally imagined as a man working at the hear t of the village economy Yet behind this familiar figure stands a long, rich, and often overlooked histor y of women whose labour, knowledge and resilience kept mills running, communities fed, and traditions alive From medieval times to the present day, women have been essential to the life of the mill

In earlier centuries, women frequently under took the physically demanding work of grain preparation Many mills were family enterprises, and wives and daughters played indispensable roles: maintaining accounts, tending livestock, managing trade, and stepping in to operate the mill when needed. In fact, records show that, as early as 1715, on the death of local miller John Guilber t, his wife - Anne - and son John inherited Stotfold Mill.

At Stotfold Mill, the legacy of women in milling is woven into today’s ways of working. Our volunteers are the lifeblood of the mill, and many of our most vital areas are led by women whose commitment “keeps our wheels of histor y turning” To name just a few: Clare Kilby, who heads up our team in Randall’s Tearoom, brings warmth, organisation and a welcoming spirit that visitors feel the moment they step inside Marlene Machell and Jill Croxford, lead our Education Team and children’s activities, ensuring that new generations discover our milling heritage through fun and hands on learning The Kingfisher Shop has been run for many years by Jenny Musselwhite and Maria Cornelius with the help of a team of volunteers Jenny and Maria are both retiring this year and handing over to two new volunteers: Jennie Woodfine and Jo Brember

As we mark these two special dates in March, we’d like to say thank you to all the women of Stotfold Mill - past, present and future - whose dedication continues to keep our Mill wheels turning If you would like to treat someone special this March, why not come along to our first Open Mill Date of 2026 -29th March Explore our Mill museum, browse our Kingfisher shop and enjoy a delicious light bite or cream tea in Randall’s tearoom (Mill, Tea Room and Shop are open 12.30pm – 5.00pm; Tea Room last orders 4.30pm; Milling sessions between 1.00pm and 4.00pm, water levels permitting). We look for ward to seeing you then!

The Need Project Update.

This month we feature the final column from Gordon as he steps aside for Ellie to take over the reigns of the project.

That month went fast and our numbers were 663 food parcels and 425 top up bags, which is what usually happens ever y year at this time But numbers are not falling overall, which is sad for those in food pover ty

We are now fully functional in the chapel with our food ministr y, with just a few little things to tweak, but that is to be expected.

As I write this, I have been retired from the project for 2 whole days and I have not come to terms with the fact I no longer have a job after 55 years of working, but it is the right thing to do

I did about 25 years and loved ever y minute (well nearly ever y minute!) and I am so grateful to God for the privilege to have led it up to now

I truly believe it was time to hand the project on to someone who, with Gods guidance, will take it fur ther and I am at peace with that. I will remain a trustee and be there when needed, so I will be around!

As this is my final repor t, I would like to thank ever y person who ever was involved in this ministr y, from the star t up until now, you have enriched my time leading this amazing project and I thank God for you. There are too many to name, but be sure of this, God knows and was and is blessed by all you do.

We are still praying and waiting on Gods provision for phase 2, but that is his timing I believe God gave us a brain and the ability to go out and search for funding and that is also what we are doing

In closing, as I know you did for me, please pray for Ellie and her team, as it is going to be a tough year for so many and without our Lords leading, we will struggle

Also, please pray for me, as I enter the next chapter of my life

Praise God always Gordon

OUR MONTH IN FIGURES: 663 parcels provided in 20 working days • 425 top- up-bags collected from our Pop- up sites • £47,345 estimated value of the food for the month • £6,602.50, the average monthly cost to run the charity.

News from Roecroft Lower School

Dear Roecroft family and residents, Spring is a time for growth; this is something we see ever y day in a school Nowhere is it truer than in our Early Years, from growing in confidence in the classrooms to developing kindness on the playground

This month we have an update from our Early Years Lead Professional, Miss Ashby Over the Spring term our topic in Reception is 'Planet Ear th and Beyond!' Our class teddy bears Freddie and Dave have been going on holiday to different countries around the world and we have received postcards from them each week Freddie and Dave began their holiday in the United Kingdom,

visiting King Charles at Buckingham Palace and we all wrote letters to him to share our news. We also found out about Alexander Graham Bell and his friend Thomas Watson, who invented the first telephone Next, the bears travelled by ferr y to France -we did some floating and sinking experiments ourselves, we also had a go at designing and making some of our own boats and testing them in the water tray

Freddie and Dave flew to Italy next where a ver y popular food is pizza! We spent the week writing about, cooking and eating delicious pizza with our own toppings on The bears also visited India and went on safari When the bears went to China there was a ver y special celebration going on - it was Chinese New Year! We celebrated this in school too, by finding out about how Chinese families prepare for and celebrate Chinese New Year

The final par t of Freddie, Dave and Bob's adventure on Ear th was to Australia We had a go at making and playing our own didgeridoos together and looked at the style of Aboriginal ar t which we then decorated our didgeridoos with Freddie and Dave have now flown off into space! They are having a great time and have been to the International Space Station just like the astronaut Tim Peake. We have found out about Tim Peake as well as Neil Armstrong, who was the first man to walk on the moon. We are looking for ward to the rest of their adventures and finding out about the different planets and stars in our Solar System. Maybe Freddie and Dave will meet some friendly aliens too!’

With warmest wishes, Mrs Cross and the team.

Our Early Years have enjoyed visiting several countries with their teddy bears Freddie & Dave

As we reach the midpoint of the academic year, reflecting on the whirlwind of activity at Pix Brook Academy fills me with an immense sense of pride Our mission has always been to provide more than just a classroom education; we strive to create a vibrant hub of oppor tunity where community spirit and skill development go hand in hand Looking back at the last half term, it is clear that our students have embraced this with incredible energy The diversity of experiences on offer has been truly breath- taking Our creative spirits took to the capital with a truly unforgettable per formance at the O2 as par t of the Young Voices choir Back on site, the energy has remained high with our high-octane TimesTables Rockstars competitions, where mathematical fluency met rock- star flair.

We have also been working hard to strengthen our local footprints. We were delighted to welcome Arlesey Town FC into our assemblies, inspiring the next generation of athletes with their community engagement work. Simultaneously, we looked to the safety and well-being of our cycling commuters; our Dr. Bike sessions provided essential ser vicing and the fitting of complimentar y bike lights, ensuring our students remain visible and safe on local roads.

One of the most significant milestones of the half term was our Year 9 Options Evening Seeing our pupils explore an expanding curriculum and engage in deep conversations about their future educational steps was a highlight for staff and families alike

As Principal, I could not be prouder of how our students conduct themselves They balance a focused academic schedule with a desire for extra -curricular "memorable moments" that define their time at PBA As we look ahead at March, we will be placing a spotlight on the fundamental impor tance of literacy with a series of exciting World Book Day activities designed to ignite a lifelong love of reading This will be swiftly followed by immersive events for both Science Week and Careers Week

Thank you to all the families and local par tners who continue to suppor t us in making these oppor tunities a reality.

ST GUTHLAC’S CHURCH, ASTWICK

Waiting At our Februar y ser vice, Revd Jenna spoke about waiting She reflected on a biblical moment involving Simeon and Anna, who, after waiting for most of their lives, finally witnessed the promised Messiah Until then, I had never really considered just how much of our lives is spent waiting Did you know that the average Brit spends a staggering 6 7 years of their life doing just that waiting? This comes from a study published by Direct Line Insurance Group in August 2019 How they managed to measure it is beyond me, but there you have it! Right now, I am waiting with great expectancy for the buds to appear on the trees. As I write, daffodils are already pushing their way through the soil Our local farmer is waiting for crops to begin appearing above ground seeds that have lain in darkness for so many months will soon break through into the light

In the church calendar, Holy Week begins on 29th March with Palm Sunday, when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. The crowds hailed and praised Him as the “King who comes in the name of the Lord ” The long -awaited Messiah had finally arrived. Yet, only days later, He was crucified That might seem like a tragic ending, but three days later He rose again And so we live in hope, holding onto the promise that He will come again Until then, we wait we wait during Lent and get on with the work of sharing the good news. On 12th April we will be celebrating the Feast day of St Guthlac, with cream teas in the Church Mede from 3:00 to 5:00pm.

Down Memory Lane

For March we are delighted to follow on from Januar y’s memories supplied to us from Rev Rober t Draycott. This month Rober t reflects on his memories of moving in to a brand new home in Trinity Road.

Number 46.

When I was one month old, in September 1947, our family of four moved into a brand new three bedroomed house, 46, Trinity Road, newly built, with a sizeable garden - all for what was an affordable rent, a Council house It seems unimaginable today to have such decent housing relatively freely available We were for tunate in all sor ts of ways, especially with our neighbourspractically all of them had children our sor t of ages that we could play in the road with A rough estimate for our section of the road would be about 30 children, rising to about 45 or so by the mid 1950’s If my recollections are correct, Stevie West was the first new baby born in this new section of the road

But what of the house itself? One bedroom was small, the other two were a good size, whilst downstairs the living room featured two inbuilt cupboards big enough for me to play in. We had the front room, which we hardly used as we couldn't afford the coal in winter till the late fifties. I learned how to get the fire going and I recall the chimney sweep - Mr Garside comes to mind (I am sure your readers can confirm?)

I also recall unheated bedrooms with iced up windows in the winter. We had some sor t of heater for 'Friday night bath night'.

As the years progressed, Dad built a small conser vator y and a hen house, whilst indoors Mum got a washing machine which had to be moved out and attached to the taps ever y Monday Eventually we got a fridge which fitted nicely into the larder just off the kitchen

The most memorable moment came in 1953 when Dad got us a Television set It meant we didn't get to go away for our seaside holiday that year, but we had a roomful on June 2nd to watch the Coronation I can remember that it was a dull day and we had to draw the cur tains to see the tiny screen a little better Little did I know that I would have to wait another 70 years to watch the next Coronation Rev Rober t Draycott.
