As we write this month’s column, we have just returned from this year ’s Steam Fair weekend - Thank you so much to ever yone who took the time to come and see us on our stand over the two days and sent in their pictures for our cover competition - we hope you like the winning photograph supplied to us by Simon Colbeck, we think you’ll agree, it’s a real show stopper!

This month we have enjoyed putting together the 84 page Stotfold Junior Presentation programme, ready for the 2025/26 presentation weekends Congratulations to ever yone involved in yet another great year for the Juniors We hope you have a great time celebrating all of your achievements

Boot Camp Helps Raise Funds For Meningitis Now

Many readers will know Joe from Car ter Fitness & Therapy. Many of you will also know that together with fellow fitness friend Conor he runs a charity bootcamp each year, raising funds for a par ticular chosen charity This year, they chose a wonder ful charity - Meningitis Now An amazing £600 was raised in memor y of Stotfold resident Jamie Jones who sadly passed away from this illness earlier this year

Stotfold Scout Group is excited to be launching a brand new Squirrel Scout Drey, welcoming boys and girls aged 4–6 to join the adventure. Squirrels is the youngest section in Scouting and focuses on fun, friendship, and building confidence through games, activities, and outdoor learning. From exploring nature and tr ying new skills to working as a team, it’s all about giving young people a great star t.

Stotfold Challenge Returns For 2026!

Have you registered to take par t this year? This year ’s Stotfold Challenge is promising to be bigger and better than last year with plans now firmly taking shape!

What is The Stotfold Challenge?

The Stotfold Challenge is a community fundraising 5k event organised by the Ams Army team Sofia, Jen, Jen, and Lauren The ladies first launched the challenge last year to raise money for DKMS, a charity close to their hear ts as Sofia’s daughter received a life - saving bone marrow transplant at age 13 after battling leukaemia four times.

Generous Donation Made to Stotfold Mill

The Stotfold Mill received a ver y special donation at the Steam Weekend whilst being visited by Tessa Rock, the Granddaughter of Howard & Ruth Randall. As many people will know, the Randall family took ownership of the Mill during the 1880’s until the late 1960’s. It was Tessa’s Grandmother Ruth’s wish that a gift to the Stotfold Mill be left in her will and as a result, a cheque for £5000 was donated towards the watermill restoration Together with sister Claire and brother Andrew, Tessa arranged for the donation to be made in their grandmother ’s memor y, with Tessa coming along to the Mill weekend to present it to them in person

Brand New Men’s MH Initiative Comes To Stotfold.

My name is Luke Newman, founder and now CEO of 'For Men To Talk’.

My own struggles with anxiety, depression, and grief began when I lost both my mother and sister to cancer and it left me battling emotions I didn’t always know how to manage. I sought counselling and therapy, but I also recognised a real lack of spaces where men could openly talk about what they were going through That’s why I founded 'For Men To Talk’ in 2019 to give men a safe, welcoming place to share their experiences and suppor t one another

'For Men To Talk’ is a peer suppor t group is for men who are suffering with a mental health illness

Conversations include many factors in a man's life, including work, relationships, anxiety and many others

There are no rules or regulations, no registration or referral is required, the men can say as much as they like or as little We have continued to grow, offering physical, vir tual, walking, social and fishing meetings. I’m now excited to announce our next step, the ‘For Men To Talk Shed’, at Hitchin Road Recreation Ground in Stotfold. This brand new group hss been facilitated with help from Stotfold Town Council.

Purpose:

The ‘For Men To Talk Shed’ will exist as more than just a workshop; it will be a space where doing and talking naturally come together Its purpose is to provide an environment where practical activity becomes the gateway to conversation, connection, and improved mental wellbeing

The Shed aims to remove barriers associated with traditional suppor t ser vices by offering something tangible and purposeful, allowing conversations to develop organically rather than forced

Core Objectives:

The Shed seeks to build a strong sense of community by encouraging connection through shared activity By introducing oppor tunities to create items that can be sold and in doing so, it suppor ts the long - term sustainability of the initiative

The ‘For Men To Talk Shed’ will be equipped to provide a safe and fully functional environment where men can take par t in a wide range of hands -on activities. With access to tools, materials, and guidance from facilitators and volunteers, attendees will be able to engage in projects such

as woodworking, furniture building, bicycle repair, and upcycling, alongside seasonal and community-led initiatives

Beyond the physical space, the true value of the Shed lies in what it offers to those who attend For many men par ticularly those who are retired, unemployed, or experiencing isolation it provides a renewed sense of purpose and belonging The Shed then becomes a place where men can rebuild confidence, rediscover identity, and feel par t of something again. Following our Annual Town Council Meeting last week, we are pleased to share that Councillor Jon Smith has been elected as Mayor of Stotfold for the 2026/27 civic year, with Councillor Jos Headington elected as Deputy Mayor Both are looking for ward to representing Stotfold over the coming year and to continuing the strong working relationships we enjoy with our neighbours across the county.

Community Spirit Shines at Stotfold Mill Steam Weekend

On Saturday 8 May, Councillors from Stotfold Town Council attended the Stotfold Mill Steam Weekend, an annual event that continues to draw visitors from across the area We experienced the best of the weather on the Saturday and ran a ‘human fruit machine’ which provided a popular attraction. It brought plenty of laughter and a fun interactive element to the day.

This year, the Town Council used the occasion to raise funds for the new Town Mayor ’s Charity, Henlow and Villages Community Responders. Stotfold Town Council expressed its gratitude to ever yone who suppor ted their effor ts, as well as to the Mill for the invitation to attend.

Augmented Reality

Due to popular demand the Augmented Reality Trail will return this summer. This year ’s theme will be the ocean, linking with the activities taking place at Greenacre Bay. The free trail will run throughout the summer holidays, Greenacre Bay This summer we are bringing the beach to Stotfold. Greenacre Bay will open during the summer holidays at the park next to the Greenacre Centre. Families will be able to enjoy a free beach themed play space right here in the town. Bring your bucket and spade and enjoy some seaside fun closer to home.!

All meetings are open to the public and are held at the Greenacre Centre, unless other wise stated and normally star t at 7pm. Meetings may be cancelled due to lack of business.

In the unfor tunate circumstance that you may need to call for an ambulance, it is highly likely that a member of the Henlow & Villages Community Responder Team will be first to arrive on scene One of the main reasons for being that the volunteers that help run this ser vice, live amongst us all in Stotfold, Arlesey & the surrounding villages.

Henlow & Villages Community Responders are volunteers with regular day jobs, who dedicate their spare time to assisting the East of England Ambulance Ser vice. They are fully trained in emergency first aid and are a vital resource within our community

The Henlow & Villages Community Responder team functions as a charity, they are required to self-fund much of the additional equipment they need and rely heavily on donations and grant funding for their ever yday running costs. We have chosen this charity as our official Mayor ’s Charity for 2026/7 and hope that you will join us in suppor ting them

Congratulations!! “The Stotfold Good Neighbour Group” have been awarded The King’s Award for Voluntar y Ser vice in 2025, the highest honour given to a voluntar y group in the UK Each volunteer, their families and friends should feel immense pride for this recognition, none more so than the family of Wendy Craig and the late Anne Clarey, the founding members of the group With encouragement from their husbands, Alan and Pat, the backing from Stotfold Town Council and suppor t from the community, the good neighbour group was created in 2013.

For Wendy, setting up the group was a way of becoming more actively involved in her community after retiring from work.

Dear Editor, Stotfold Bowls Club has recently added a new resource to the club, with a Solar Panel system and associated infrastructure installed. This was under taken by local(ish) supplier Lush Renewables who completed the work in one day! This would not have been possible without the suppor t of the Eleemosynar y Charity of William Field and Stotfold Town Council, both of which gave grants to the club, alongside Bowls Bedfordshire who provided a small interest free loan

We thank these organisations, without their suppor t the project would not have been feasible We look for ward to substantially reducing our monthly electricity bill and being able to charge our batter y electric mower with our own electricity!

befriending ser vices, social clubs and chair-based exercises classes, which Wendy now teaches Over the years of tireless dedication from Wendy, Anne and all the fellow volunteers the charity has become an essential par t of the local community today

Sadly, Anne passed away in 2021, shor tly followed by her husband Pat Anne was not only a key member in setting up the charity, but a close friend to Wendy, who she misses dearly Wendy then lost her husband Alan, in 2022 after 52 years She decided it was then time to step down as Chair of the group finally in 2023, but she continues to be actively involved in the charity. In 2025, with approximately 40 volunteers and over 15,000 acts of community, the charity was recognised for their outstanding achievement.

A presentation award ceremony took place in April 2026 at the Stotfold Memorial Hall, where they were presented with the prestigious cr ystal Kings Award, with each volunteer receiving an individual cer tificate

News from the Mill.

Looking back on May’s Steam Fair and Countr y Show, we are reminded why it is always one of our favourite times of year here at Stotfold Mill. We feel privileged to share our beautiful piece of living histor y with visitors from near and far, and there is always a real sense of excitement as the “Steamies” arrive in Stotfold and make their way down Mill Lane

This year marked our 22nd annual Show and, as is often the case with our May event, it was a weekend of two halves We enjoyed glorious sunshine on the Saturday, while Sunday brought bitterly cold winds Over the course of the weekend, visitors were enter tained by live music, Meirion Owen and his sheepdogs, the Shefford Majorettes, as well as Stannage Stunt World, Extreme Bike Battle, and the motorbike spectacle of the Wall of Death Our “Steam vs People Power ” Tug of War saw People narrowly take the win and, of course, our free Kidzone – subsidised by the Mill –was a huge success. On Sunday, we were also treated to an amazing flypast by a Spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

We would like to thank ever yone who came along, suppor ted the weekend, and helped us continue suppor ting Stotfold Mill and the Nature Reser ve. Our charity – The Stotfold Mill Preser vation Trust - run solely by volunteers – plays a crucial role in

keeping the Mill in working order so that we can preser ve and share it for future generations. People like 10 year old Evie who, during the steam fair weekend, was delighted to become the youngest person to have ever run both stones at the Mill under the skilled and experienced guidance of our Head Miller, Ray Kilby

News from Poppies Nurser y

Here at Poppies and Poppyyfields we value nature and have recently revamped our outdoor spaces at both settings

The Wild Wood at Poppies has a multitude of oppor tunities, including a tyre swing, tree house, wooden train, wooden boat, twig dome and outdoor classroom

We have also built an eco-area where children are growing produce to eat. Poppyfields have been enjoying their own re -vamped wooded nook, with fir cone kitchen, reading area, huge sandpit and a newly created eco area for growing salad crops.

Our outdoor environments at both our sites provide a rich, stimulating environment where children learn to be curious, be creative, become independent, learn how to keep safe, be happy and have fun with nature! We operate ‘free -flow’ where our outdoor spaces are open throughout the year and children can move freely between them Our curriculum ensures that oppor tunity for ever y aspect of learning is present both indoors and outside

This month, our children have explored insects and animals, discovering which animals are out in the day or night We have recently suppor ted National Hedgehog week and spent a ver y happy time exploring these delightful creatures

Children used dough, clay and wood spills to recreate them, some used woodwork and made beautiful models, while painting to create a spikey hedgehog body was great fun!

Our breakfast and after school children have also been enjoying the freedom of the outdoors, per fect for unwinding and playing with friends after their school day.

News from Roecroft Lower School

Once again, I find myself saying how quickly the time is flying by, but I can say with all sincerity this school year has felt like one of my fastest yet As we enter the final half term of the school year, we begin a ver y busy schedule of transition work and events with all our children, as they move from year to year, star t their journey with us after nurser y or are moving on to a new setting

A time of reflection is always so impor tant here, as we think of all the children’s successes and achievements over the last 11 months They make us all ver y proud

This month we have an update form Miss Ashby, our lead early years practitioner: ‘In Reception, our topic this term is 'Once Upon a Time ' and we have been spending the term reading and finding out about lots of different books and stories.

We have already read 'Jack and the Beanstalk', written a set of instructions and planted our own beans. We had to look after them and obser ve the changes as they grew. We found out about the life cycle of a bean plant and got ver y excited when our beanstalks star ted to grow! They ended up growing ver y tall, so we took them home and some of us planted them in our gardens.

Ever yone loved writing letters to our friends when we read 'The Jolly Postman' stor y We were excited to walk to the post box in small groups to post them and wait for the letters to be delivered

We then looked at 'Handa's Surprise' which is about a little girl who lives in a village in Kenya and our final stor y of the first par t of the term was 'The Gingerbread Man' which has always been a firm favourite We made our own Gingerbread people and ver y loudly recited the famous line from the book 'Run, run as fast as you can, you can't catch me I'm the gingerbread man!'

Over the remainder of this term, we will be continuing to look at lots of different books and stories including 'The Ver y Hungr y Caterpillar' and learning about the butter fly life cycle, time and our daily routines, and 'The Gruffalo' and writing Gruffalo descriptions We will also be reading 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt', 'The Three Little Pigs' and 'If the Dinosaurs Came Back '

To end the year, we will also be having our ver y special Teddy Bears Picnic to celebrate the end of our first year at school, as we get ready for our exciting transition into Year 1

News from Fair field Park Lower School

Class assemblies have recently taken place for children from Reception through to Year 3 These assemblies were ver y well attended by parents and carers and were thoroughly enjoyed by all The children spoke with growing confidence and enthusiasm, proudly showcasing the work they have been doing in class

Over the Easter holidays, children were

also invited to take par t in a poetr y challenge, where they learned a poem to per form to their class This initiative was met with great enthusiasm, and it was clear that a lot of time and effor t had gone into per fecting each per formance Class winners were then selected to take par t in a whole - school poetr y recital, which proved to be a highlight for both pupils and staff

The recital featured a wide range of per formances, with children reciting poems from a variety of well-known poets, as well as some original pieces We were especially impressed by those children who chose to adapt existing poems or write their own, showing creativity, imagination, and a real love for language

The standard of per formance was incredibly high, and it was wonder ful to celebrate the children’s achievements together as a school community

The children in KS2 also got to take par t in Quad Kids athletics and a Cricket event with the Redborne Spor ts Par tnership

Sun, Spor t, and Success: A Season of Milestones at Pix Brook Academy! The Summer Term at Pix Brook Academy has arrived with a renewed sense of energy and oppor tunity We began the term on a high note with our first-ever international Spor ts Tour to Barcelona This was a monumental occasion for our students, who represented the Academy with distinction abroad Beyond the pitches and cour ts, the trip offered a fabulous oppor tunity for our young people to immerse themselves in Spanish culture, creating memories that will undoubtedly last a lifetime

The spirit of exploration continues as our Year 8 pupils prepare for the outdoor challenges of PGL, while our Year 9 students head to the Western Battlefields for a poignant and educational journey through histor y Back on school grounds, we have been delighted by a different kind of growth through our recent duckling hatching initiative. We star ted the summer term with lots of activities, trips, workshops, mock exams and GCSE and A Level exams. There have been numerous spor ting activities to include athletics, rounders and girls and boys football fixtures across the year groups, ever yone having fun, learning new skills and per forming well! As well as a variety of enrichment oppor tunities throughout the school, mentoring and Spor ts Leader events.

Alley Ever yone thoroughly enjoyed their post SATs treat exploring the wonders of the Wizarding World and sharing the magic of the studio tour.

Our Year 6 pupils have recently enjoyed a day trip to the Warner Brothers Harr y Potter Studio, walking in the footsteps of Harr y Potter at Hogwar ts Exploring the original stone floor of the Hogwar ts’ iconic Great Hall and wandering down Diagon

Transition events have been taking place with visits to local feeder schools. We are really looking for ward to meeting ever yone who will be joining our ETA community next academic year. Our fabulous PE team ran an inter form Wimbledon tennis competition recently, many pupils engaged and suppor ted this special event in school. This month we have activity days for years 7 and 8, a sur vival day for year 5, Box End for year 9, a hospitality and catering trip for year 10 and lots more This really is an exceptionally busy term for ever yone

An update from Teasel

As Nature bursts back into life, so our Winter work comes to an end. This featured tree work (including several Hazels pollarded) and hedge laying in Meadow 2 – not quite finished, but almost there We coppiced the Osier willows, which would normally be ideal for weaving along the top of the laid hedge – but unfor tunately they didn’t do too well and much of them were too dr y and brittle It may be that we need to replace some of the osier plants

So now our multi- skilled team have been working on a variety of other projects around the reser ve We finally managed to transpor t and install the splendid (but ver y heavy!) new bench,

which had been donated to the Mill for use by the kids who visit for pond dipping. The small pond that it faces is a favourite spot for hunting water bugs Mill volunteers from the Education Team organize visits by school and youth groups, which feature tours and activities in the Mill and Nature Reser ve

There are two “living willow hides” overlooking the main ponds – the idea is to screen people wanting to obser ve the wildlife without disturbing it, whilst creating “viewing windows” using the live willow It is quite a challenge to “ tame” these structure at times!!

We are star ting to repair and improve features in our secret little Kidz Zone, in JohnStan Wood (behind the car park and wooden compound) This is an area for younger kids to explore and have fun (but parents please make sure your youngsters are super vised!). We don’t have formal play equipment, but we recently replaced the “stepping posts” to allow kids to cross the river.

U14 A Letchwor th GC RFC – Tour Champions of Somerset!

The U14A Letchwor th rugby team signed off their season in style over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend as they were crowned Champions of Somerset, competing in the Revel Rugby Somerset Festival hosted by Cheddar Valley RFC The rugby team, which featured many boys from our local schools lifted the Cup alongside their jubilant coaches and families after a dramtic final - what a match & what a tour! Stotfold Twirlers Compete at Nationals. Stotfold Twirlers spent the May bank holiday at UTE Nationals in Crawley. They per formed some fantastic routines and were awarded 14 top seven places in some ver y hard groups of up to 40 athletes. Three second places were won by Skye, a third place for Erin and Darcey who won National champion in one of her events alongside a second placing in Ar tistic Dance Our Bellettes members Mila and Grace also competed, placing in the top 7 for their events with Grace winning Senior Overall champion

The girls are now working hard for their next competition which is the UTE Open at the end of June, with Mila and Grace also preparing for International competitions

Stotfold’s Tallulah Taking The Snooker World By Storm.

Etonbur y student Tallulah Cousins is the hot topic in the world of competitive snooker, having only played the game for 7 months! Now hotly tipped to be one of the young English snooker players to watch, 13-year-old Tallulah has competed in both the 2026 Landywood British Women's Open and the 2025/2026 Landywood English Under-16 Championship Tallulah has recently just returned from her first international tournament in Belgium, as well as finishing 2nd in her group at the English U18 Championship at the beginning of May

Tallulah first found a love for the game after being challenged to a game by her Dad Fast for ward a few months and Tallulah is making waves on all the major competition circuits Last month, Tallulah was invited by World’s Womens Snooker to attend the World Championship / Ladies Day at the Wintergarden, Sheffield, where she spent the day interacting with the public, playing live challenges as well as being inter viewed by both the WST for Social Media and Abigail Davies from the BBC for a TV Inter view The following day all the ladies were invited into the Crucible to watch the morning session of the Championships

There’s no doubt that Tallulah is cer tainly one to watch out for in the future.

Whilst she remains young in the world of snooker, Tallulah’s dedication to the game will no doubt assure her of a ver y promising future ahead. W

News from Stotfold Football Club

Another season has finished and to be honest a bit mixed for the club. The 1st team finished in 17th place retaining their step 4 status fairly comfor tably. In Jon and Sean’s final season as managers of the Reser ves, the team finished in a SSMFL play-off position of 5th but due to the FA Rules of the two men’s teams being at step 4 and 6, they couldn’t enter the play-offs for step 5 The Women’s team finished 7th in a tough league season for them We now look for ward to a couple of month’s break before the pre - season friendlies star t in July

It’s been a while since we asked one of our trusted adver tisers to provide us with some advice, but having spoken to a few of our readers lately, it seems that many of us are yet to make arrangements for our Will - an essential requirement at any age. It is easy to think of making a Will as one of those jobs for "later " Later, when life is less busy Later, when the children are older. Later, when there is more time and more cer tainty. Despite the hear tbreak, funeral wishes are understood, assets pass as intended, and stress is reduced at the ver y moment the family needs breathing space. • Separated spouses may still have legal rights if a divorce wasn't finalised

• Family members face significant delay, cost, and potential conflict

A Will allows you to decide who inherits your estate, who should manage your affairs (executors), and impor tantly, who should act as guardians for minor children. It is your oppor tunity to protect your par tner, provide for your family, and ensure specific gifts go to the people you choose. Many avoid making a Will because they imagine a long, expensive, or uncomfor table process. In reality, it is straightfor ward. It begins with a few practical decisions about your beneficiaries and your wishes. However, a Will is only effective if it complies with legal formalities.

Children aged 5 – 12 are welcome to join King’s Kids. Youth aged 13 and above are invited to join our youth group, typically held on the 2nd and 4th Sundays each month. We celebrate Communion on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month. We have an ‘open table’ and invite all who acknowledge Jesus as Lord and Saviour to share Communion with us. We also encourage children to par ticipate. We gather in the church building on Wednesday mornings at 10:00am and on Sunday evenings at 6pm. to pray - Join us as par t of our weekly time of prayer as a collective fellowship

At the time of writing, however, rain is in shor t supply and is desperately needed for our farmers, and for our gardens too There is something quite biblical in this people have always recognised that rhy thm of dr y and wet, of dependence and provision In the pages of Scripture, the coming of rain was never taken for granted; it was received with gratitude, even relief, as a sign of God’s care and faithfulness The land depended on it, crops depended on it, and so did ever yday life That rhy thm of waiting and receiving, of dr yness and renewal runs through much of the Bible It speaks not only of the natural world, but of our own lives too There are times when things feel full and flourishing, and others when we find ourselves waiting, hoping, perhaps even struggling

And, ver y practically… if there is a drought, our Cream Teas on Sunday 14th June, 2pm–5pm might feel even more appealing sunshine, dr y ground, and no soggy scones! Do come along and join us for a relaxed afternoon in the beautiful church grounds, with scones, tea (or even a glass of something sparkling), plus a raffle and games for children.
